Appearance
- Hair: Long and black, tied into a ponytail 43.
- Clothing: Wears a jonin uniform 43.
- Demeanor: Usually has a lazy smile and a relaxed posture, often leaning against a tree with his hands in his pockets. His expression sharpens when confronted by Akatsuki 43 48.
Personality
Shikaku openly describes himself as lazy. Upon taking charge of Team 10, he warns his students that he will not supervise them every day and expects them to develop self-discipline. He remains unhurried during their initial attacks, casually pointing out weaknesses in their speed and reactions 43 45.
Despite his relaxed manner, he carefully evaluates his students. He appreciates Hayate’s sincerity and enthusiasm, considers Jingyue calm and clever, and finds Rìtiān difficult to fathom. When the team outwits him, he acknowledges their success and praises Rìtiān rather than disputing the result 46.
His composure is not absolute: the smell of the students’ elaborate lunch distracts him enough for them to prepare a trap unnoticed. Against genuine threats, however, he becomes serious, refusing Akatsuki’s demand for Gaara and organizing his students’ roles during the crisis in Sunagakure 46 48 50.
Abilities & Skills
Shadow Imitation Technique
Shikaku extends his shadow to catch or restrain targets 48 50.
- Catches Deidara’s incoming Clay Birds, although they still explode 48.
- Briefly immobilizes Gaara during his Partial Tailed Beast Transformation, giving Rasa an opportunity to act 50.
- Cannot sustain the restraint against Gaara’s surging chakra; Gaara breaks free, leaving Shikaku pale and staggering backward 50.
Soft Body Modification
Shikaku makes his body limp and flexible enough to slip out of confinement 46.
- Escapes Rìtiān’s Chakra Net by sliding through it like mud 46.
- His escape does not prevent Rìtiān from taking the bells during the opening it creates 46.
Substitution and Close-Quarters Combat
Shikaku uses misdirection, evasive movement, and precise physical strikes to overwhelm his students during their first exchange 45.
- Substitutes a log when Hayate attacks after Jingyue’s Hell Viewing Technique 45.
- Reappears behind Hayate and knocks him away with a palm strike 45.
- Evades attacks from ten shadow clones and destroys them one after another 45.
Strategy and Field Leadership
Known as Konoha’s strategist and Jonin Commander, Shikaku also directs Team 10’s training and missions 43.
- Tests the students through a one-day bell exercise before formally accepting them as genin 45 46.
- Assigns their first C-rank mission: escorting a caravan from Konoha to Sunagakure 46.
- During Gaara’s rampage, orders Jingyue to care for the injured Hayate and assist evacuation while he and Rìtiān reinforce Rasa 50.
- Fails to stop Sasori during their pursuit encounter and acknowledges that the puppeteer was too strong 49.
Equipment
- Two bells — Objectives of Team 10’s qualification test; Rìtiān steals both to secure the team’s success 46.
- Book — Carries one when meeting the team and reads while waiting for the students’ next attempt 45 46.
Relationships
- Uchiha Rìtiān — Student who repeatedly calls him “old man” or “Uncle Shikaku.” Shikaku finds his manner irritating but recognizes his ingenuity after losing the bell test 43 46.
- Akimichi Jifeng / Hayate — Student whose passion and sincerity Shikaku values, despite finding him less intellectually gifted 43 46.
- Yamanaka Jingetsu / Jingyue — Student whom he considers calm, clever, and promising; he also recognizes the practical value of Yamanaka secret techniques 43 46.
- Shikamaru — His son 43.
- Yamada — Caravan leader whose goods Team 10 escorts toward Sunagakure. Shikaku asks him to accelerate the journey after learning of the threat to Gaara 47 49.
- Rasa — Sunagakure’s Fourth Kazekage, whom Shikaku assists in restraining Gaara 50.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Appointment to Team 10
Following Rìtiān’s Academy graduation, Iruka announces Shikaku as the leader of Team 10, surprising those present because of his position as Jonin Commander. Shikaku reveals that someone specifically requested his appointment but refuses to identify the requester 43.
Bell Test
Shikaku gives the three students one day to take his bells, warning that anyone without one will go hungry. Their opening attacks fail, including Rìtiān’s combination of shadow clones and Earth Swamp Technique 45.
The students then distract him with a lavish lunch while Hayate secretly prepares a Chakra Net. Although Shikaku escapes the trap through Soft Body Modification, Rìtiān takes both bells during his escape. Shikaku passes the entire team and formally recognizes them as genin 46.
Caravan Escort and Akatsuki Encounter
Team 10 accompanies Yamada’s caravan toward Sunagakure and survives a bandit ambush in Death Valley. Deidara and Sasori subsequently block their route and demand Gaara. Shikaku refuses, then pursues Sasori while Rìtiān remains to confront Deidara 47 48.
Shikaku returns without capturing Sasori. After Rìtiān warns that the puppeteer is targeting the One-Tail, he orders the caravan to hurry toward Sunagakure 49.
Gaara’s Rampage
Upon arriving in the devastated village, Shikaku joins Rìtiān in supporting Rasa, identifying himself as reinforcement sent on the Hokage’s orders. His Shadow Imitation briefly holds Gaara, but the transformed jinchuriki breaks free. Rìtiān ultimately calms Gaara through the Mind Dialogue Technique, leaving Shikaku astonished by his student’s intervention 50.
