Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Wind Hashira 4 Already holds Hashira rank when Kagaya Ubuyashiki appoints him as Su Chen’s opponent for a Hashira-qualification duel.
Demon Slayer Mark awakened 91 Explicitly described as having awakened his Mark during the duel’s closing exchanges. Earlier attempts to awaken it through repeated Wind Breathing practice had failed; he later seeks Su Chen’s help because his control remains inferior to Su Chen’s 14 41 149.

Background

Before his rivalry with Su Chen, Shinazugawa fought Lower Rank One, Gu Huo Niao, alongside Masachika Kumeno. He later recalls that encounter as a measure of how seriously he takes an opponent 89.

He once courted Kanae Kocho. After her death, he describes the matter as belonging to the past, although hearing her name still unsettles him 39 43 44.

Appearance

  • Tall, intimidating figure: His appearance repeatedly frightens patients and civilians before he says anything 43 44 150.
  • Extensive scarring: His face is covered in scars, and his hands are also scarred 43 67.
  • Exposed chest: While waiting for the train, he wears a thin outfit that leaves his chest uncovered, becoming visibly chilled after remaining outside overnight 186.

Personality

Shinazugawa is proud, confrontational, and easily provoked when his competence is questioned. He initially treats Su Chen’s confidence as arrogance and threatens to break every bone in his body. Even after recognizing Su Chen’s talent, he struggles to ask him for instruction because doing so threatens his dignity as a Hashira 4 45 47 49.

His desire to become stronger repeatedly competes with that pride. He trains obsessively to awaken his Demon Slayer Mark and even offers to make Su Chen his Tsuguko partly so he can observe the Mark at close range. Once he accepts Su Chen as a worthy opponent, his hostility gives way to genuine concern and respect 41 60 80.

He values endurance and determination, admiring Inosuke’s refusal to stop attacking while dismissing patients who fear his punishing training. His own persistence is extreme: after losing consciousness during the qualification duel, he stands back up with his sword still gripped in his hand 70 92.

Despite his threatening manner, he shows consideration toward others. He lets Shinobu rest while he waits overnight for their train, and Shinobu explicitly dismisses the possibility that his anger over its delay would make him kill a human driver 186 187.

Abilities & Skills

Wind Breathing

Shinazugawa combines rapid movement, wind slashes, and broad-area attacks. His techniques can restrict an opponent’s escape routes, obscure their vision, or create openings for close-range strikes 84 85 88.

Form / Technique Documented use
First Form: Dust Traveler Wind—Cutting Slash / Dust Whirlwind Cutter Combines an advancing charge with cutting winds; one of his signature methods of closing distance 84 85 87.
Second Form: Claws—Koto Wind A broad frontal attack whose movements he can reproduce without a blade 71.
Fourth Form: Rising Sandstorm Creates an upward-surging tornado. Used with a wooden sword and later with a blade held between his toes 71 89.
Fifth Form: Cold Autumn Mountain—Falling Wind Has the fastest opening among his Wind Breathing forms, making it his preferred response when he has little time to prepare 84 91.
Sixth Form: Black Wind Smoke Haze Releases black wind that obscures the opponent’s vision 88.
Seventh Form: Gale—Tengu Wind His widest-ranging attack. He can overlap repeated uses to increase the number of wind blades, although doing so consumes additional stamina 84 85.
Ninth Form: Idaten Typhoon An aerial attack that generates fierce winds from above; used against Su Chen’s Blazing Breathing secret art 85.
Bladeless Form—Claws: Purifying Wind Channels Wind Breathing through bodily movement rather than a sword 70.

Total Concentration and Unarmed Combat

  • Physical enhancement: Total Concentration accelerates his blood flow and supports explosive bodily movements 70.
  • Exceptional speed: His ordinary combat movement initially exceeds what Su Chen can follow without multiple perception and movement enhancements 84.
  • Weaponless techniques: He can generate Wind Breathing attacks through his hands and body, providing Su Chen with a model for adapting Breathing Styles into unarmed combat 70 71 89.
  • Unconventional sword handling: He blocks while biting his sword’s hilt and supporting the blade with a hand. He can also grip a broken Nichirin Blade between his toes and incorporate it into a technique 88 89.

Marechi Constitution and Recovery

  • Rapid healing: He claims that his wounds generally heal within half a day. After donating three large buckets of blood, he appears energetic and reports being at full strength before the duel 60 80.
  • Combat endurance: His wounds stabilize during the fight with Su Chen. The narration attributes his ability to fight more effectively despite serious injuries to his rare-blood constitution 86.
  • Transfusion compatibility: His blood is the only tested blood compatible with Su Chen; samples from Shinobu, Kanao, and Inosuke are rejected 75.
  • Unconfirmed effects on Su Chen: Shinobu investigates a possible connection between his blood and Genya’s demon-eater constitution. Su Chen later suspects the transfusion contributed to changes in his own body, but the connection is not established as fact 75 138.

Poison Resistance and Control

  • Acquired resistance: By the qualification duel, he has developed resistance to Shinobu’s paralytic poison 87 88.
  • Resistance is not immunity to all poisons: Su Chen’s airborne numbing poison still impairs his movement and interrupts a charged attack 87 88.
  • Breathing-based suppression: He uses his Breathing Style to halt the poison’s progression sufficiently to stand and resume fighting, although numbness remains 89.

Combat Awareness

  • Keen hearing: He overhears Shinobu’s whispered discussion with Su Chen 59.
  • Tactical adaptation: When ranged attacks fail, he closes the distance; after close combat becomes too dangerous, he switches back to sustained area attacks 85 89.
  • Opportunistic weapon use: He retrieves Su Chen’s broken blade with his toes and turns it into a counterattack 89.
  • Recognizing talent: While watching Su Chen fight Inosuke, he identifies that Su Chen is learning attack patterns and devising counters during the exchange 45.

Infinite Onslaught Training

  • Devises an intense rehabilitation method that frightens or hurts his patients rather than helping them recover 66 67.
  • Initially mistakes painful reactions for evidence that his massage is working 66.
  • After Su Chen intervenes, he reflects on the instruction to prioritize sincere patient care over winning the competition 67.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Nichirin Blade — His principal weapon for Wind Breathing; he can wield it conventionally or incorporate unusual grips into close combat 84 88.
  • Wooden sword — Used during the Butterfly Mansion rehabilitation competition; his Wind Breathing remains powerful enough to disrupt training and damage the surroundings 71 73.
  • Su Chen’s broken Nichirin Blade — Temporarily held between his toes during the duel and used in a Rising Sandstorm counterattack 89.

Relationships

  • Su Chen — Rival who becomes a respected opponent and a source of guidance on the Demon Slayer Mark. Shinazugawa also supplies the blood needed for Su Chen’s transfusion 4 75 80 149.
  • Shinobu Kocho — Fellow Hashira who repeatedly embarrasses him over his reluctance to seek advice. Their conflict escalates when his fighting damages the Butterfly Mansion, though they later travel and investigate together 43 49 73 187.
  • Kanae Kocho — Former romantic interest. Her memory prompts him to apologize and put away his sword when Shinobu reminds him that Kanae established the Butterfly Mansion 39 44.
  • Genya Shinazugawa — Younger brother and one of the participants on his rehabilitation team 63 150.
  • Obanai Iguro — Regular sparring partner who informs him of Su Chen’s progress, encourages him to challenge Su Chen, and reminds him of their approaching match 14 41.
  • Kyojuro Rengoku — Fellow Hashira and competitor in the medical contest. They clash when Shinazugawa interferes with Rengoku’s patients and Su Chen’s training 47 71 72.
  • Inosuke Hashibira — Recruited as his fifth rehabilitation patient. Shinazugawa admires his persistence and considers him qualified to become his Tsuguko, but no apprenticeship is established 63 70.
  • Kagaya Ubuyashiki — Corps leader whose authority he obeys despite his anger over Su Chen’s challenge 4.
  • Masachika Kumeno — Former battle companion against Lower Rank One, Gu Huo Niao 89.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Su Chen’s Qualification Challenge

Kagaya schedules a duel after Su Chen claims he can defeat Shinazugawa within half a month. Victory would make Su Chen the Corps’ tenth Hashira-level member. Shinazugawa accepts the order but responds to the challenge with open hostility 4.

During the preparation period, he unsuccessfully attempts to awaken his Demon Slayer Mark by repeatedly performing a fast-opening Wind Breathing form to raise his body temperature. His need for further guidance eventually brings him to the Butterfly Mansion, where Su Chen offers instruction in exchange for winning a competition 41 43 49.

Butterfly Mansion Competition

Shinazugawa initially leads the medical competition, but Su Chen overturns that advantage by bringing in a large group of injured villagers. By the final rehabilitation round, Shinazugawa trails by more than three hundred points 54 60.

His harsh treatment methods fail to match Su Chen’s results. Taking advantage of rules permitting interference and Breathing Styles, he disrupts his rivals’ training and begins fighting Rengoku. Shinobu ends the clash by stabbing him with an anesthetic-coated blade, then condemns him for damaging Kanae’s home and endangering Su Chen 67 71 72 73 75.

Shinazugawa concedes the competition and subsequently provides blood for Su Chen’s treatment 75 80.

Qualification Duel

Before the formal match, Shinazugawa admits that he already acknowledged Su Chen at the Butterfly Mansion. He nevertheless promises to fight at full strength and warns Su Chen not to die 80.

The duel forces both fighters to adapt. Shinazugawa answers Su Chen’s varied Breathing Styles with layered wind attacks, survives serious wounds, and continues fighting after airborne poison restricts his movement. His use of a sword between his toes briefly reverses the battle’s momentum 84 85 86 88 89.

In the final exchange, Su Chen drives three blade rings into Shinazugawa’s kidney area while receiving a sword-hilt strike to his own back. Both fall and rise again, but Shinazugawa has already lost consciousness. Su Chen relaxes his rigid muscles with massage, causing him to collapse and ending the duel in Su Chen’s victory 91 92.

Entertainment District Misidentification

Su Chen uses Shinazugawa’s identity while gathering information at Kyogoku House. His inability to produce more than one coin creates a rumor that “Shinazugawa” tried to buy sex for that amount 116 118 150.

The real Shinazugawa later arrives with Shinobu to rescue Su Chen and obtain further Mark instruction. Mizurō publicly accuses him of the earlier incident. Although Hinatsuru explains Su Chen’s information-gathering visit, Shinazugawa remains confused about how he became involved and eventually abandons the attempt to understand it 149 150 152 153.

Mugen Train Encounter

On the return journey, Shinazugawa stubbornly waits through a two-day train delay. When the train finally arrives, he leaps aboard and encounters a powerful tattooed demon near its front 186 187.

He judges the demon stronger than himself but cannot identify it because its eyes bear no numbers. The following chapter identifies it as Akaza, who fled out of concern that he might lose control and kill Shinazugawa. Shinazugawa and Shinobu subsequently discover the train arrived without its driver and report the unusual events to the Corps 187 188.
