Background / History
Human Life
Born in the Edo period, Hakuji grew up in poverty. His mother died early, and his father became gravely ill. Hakuji stole to purchase medicine, enduring capture and punitive tattooing because he considered his father’s treatment more important. His father eventually killed himself rather than remain the reason for his son’s crimes 170 176.
Keizo recognized Hakuji’s barehanded fighting talent, defeated him, and brought him to the Soryu Dojo. Hakuji stayed to study martial arts and care for Keizo’s sick daughter, Koyuki. When the son of a neighboring kendo dojo’s master abandoned Koyuki during an asthma attack, Hakuji rescued her. He subsequently defeated nine members of that dojo and broke the son’s real sword when the latter attacked him 176.
When Hakuji was eighteen, Keizo offered him the dojo’s succession and Koyuki’s hand in marriage. Hakuji accepted and took Koyuki to see fireworks, promising to become strong enough to protect her throughout her life. While he was away reporting the marriage to his father’s grave, the neighboring dojo poisoned the Soryu Dojo’s well, killing both Koyuki and Keizo. Hakuji retaliated by slaughtering everyone at the kendo dojo with his bare hands 176 177.
Becoming Akaza
Muzan recruited Hakuji, who became the demon Akaza. Although he gradually forgot Koyuki, his original desire to become stronger for her protection persisted as an obsession with strength. He spent centuries refining his martial arts and fighting generations of Hashira 170 177 182.
Appearance
- Build: Muscular and sharply defined, with evenly proportioned muscles suited to speed and hand-to-hand combat rather than bulk 168.
- Markings: Extensive tattoos cover his body and face 168 183.
- Eyes: Initially bear the characters identifying him as Upper Rank Three. These disappear after his separation from Muzan and return when the curse is reactivated 168 177 267.
- Disguise: Later adopts an ordinary face and wears a black overcoat with a hood while entering the Entertainment District 188.
Personality
Akaza is a martial-arts obsessive who admires powerful opponents and seeks fights as a means of improving himself. His enthusiasm for Kyojuro Rengoku’s talent leads him to repeatedly propose demonhood, hoping to gain a lasting rival. His confidence does not make him indifferent to survival: once Su Chen decisively outclasses him, he bargains for another fight in a hundred years and then attempts to flee 169 170 171 172 173.
Recovering his memories restores his grief for Koyuki and his willingness to acknowledge his victims. He initially considers death an appropriate punishment, but accepts Su Chen’s demand that he atone through action instead. Although he never ate women or children, he recognizes that this did not make his other victims deserving of death. He later promises to stop eating people entirely 177 179.
His hatred of Doma is unusually intense. Doma’s feigned affection infuriates him, while the prospect of helping kill Doma gives him an immediate sense of purpose after leaving Muzan. By contrast, Akaza becomes openly grateful toward Su Chen and comes to respect Tamayo’s medical knowledge and determination 155 177 179 231.
Abilities & Skills
Martial Arts
Akaza fights barehanded, combining punches, kicks, rapid movement, and demonic shock waves 168 170 171.
- Was already capable of killing an entire dojo with his bare hands as a human 177.
- Refined his fighting techniques over hundreds of years; Blue Silver Chaotic Afterglow alone took decades to develop 179.
- Can alter established techniques during combat, as when he redirects Eight-Layered Demon Core outward to search for an undetectable opponent 172.
- Eventually accepts Su Chen’s superiority after seeing him reproduce techniques honed over centuries 179.
Destructive Death: Compass Needle
The core of Akaza’s Blood Demon Art, Compass Needle detects an opponent’s fighting spirit and guides his attacks and evasions with magnetic precision 169 173.
- Technique Deployment: Produces a twelve-pointed snowflake formation beneath his feet 169.
- Scaling response: Stronger enemy fighting spirit produces a stronger response and greater power and precision 169.
- Detection limit: Cannot detect opponents who lack or conceal fighting spirit. Su Chen’s Transparent World makes his presence disappear from its perception 169 171.
- Distinction from Su Chen’s version: Akaza senses fighting spirit and killing intent; Su Chen’s later Perception Compass Needle instead detects biological magnetic fields 180.
Destructive Death Techniques
| Technique | Effect |
|---|---|
| Disorder | Delivers extremely rapid blows to the same point. Its aftershocks remain destructive even after the attack is cut apart 173. |
| Air Type | Sends six rapid punches into empty air, generating long-range shock waves 169 173. |
| Leg Type: Crown Splitter | Whips a leg upward from behind to deliver a powerful kick to the opponent’s head 173. |
| Leg Type: Flowing Flashing Lights | Repeatedly kicks the same point with one leg, releasing shock waves stronger than Air Type 171 173. |
| Leg Type: Flying Wandering Star: Thousand Wheels | Uses alternating, continuous kicks to generate swirling, meteor-like shock waves 172 174. |
| Crushing Form: Myriad Leaves Flashing Willow | Drives a fist downward, shattering the ground in branching patterns resembling leaf veins 174. |
| Annihilation Style | Unleashes a devastating punch that produces a massive explosion 174. |
| Eight-Layered Demon Core | Converges eight fierce blows on one point from multiple directions. Its Reverse Form scatters the attacks outward 172 174. |
| Final Form: Blue Silver Chaotic Afterglow | Uses Compass Needle to fire hundreds of fast, powerful projectiles in every direction, centered on Akaza 172 174. |
Regeneration
Akaza rapidly replaces damaged flesh, including severe injuries to his face and head 172 183.
- Repeatedly sacrifices portions of his head to avoid complete decapitation during his fight with Su Chen 172.
- After reaching the Supreme Realm, can regenerate even after a Nichirin Blade fully severs his head 176 177 183.
- Muzan can temporarily suppress his healing while punishing him 155.
- His breakthrough does not establish immunity to sunlight; Su Chen still warns him to travel at night 183.
Facial Reshaping and Disguise
Akaza initially has never learned Mimicry and cannot reproduce it despite Su Chen’s instruction 180 182.
- Su Chen instead teaches him to redirect regenerating facial flesh, physically helping shape a replacement face 183.
- The initial reshaping leaves his facial tattoos intact. By his later appearance in the Entertainment District, he can shift into an ordinary face with the tattoos and demonic markings concealed 183 188.
Demonic Hunger and Blood Dependence
Avoiding human prey requires Akaza to endure severe hunger and adopt a different feeding regimen 178 231.
- Su Chen recommends animals as an alternative and directs him to Tamayo for help 178 179.
- A small transfusion of Su Chen’s Marechi blood sustains him temporarily but makes him drunk. Su Chen realizes it may also intensify his subsequent hunger 178 179.
- Tamayo warns that returning to human feeding would endanger his self-control 231.
- Escaping the curse does not remove Muzan’s original blood from his body, leaving a route for Muzan to regain control 264 267.
Relationships
- Koyuki — Keizo’s daughter and Hakuji’s fiancée. Her memory restores the emotional purpose behind his pursuit of strength and helps turn him away from Muzan 176 177 184.
- Keizo — Martial-arts master who gave Hakuji a home, entrusted Koyuki’s care to him, and offered him succession to the Soryu Dojo 176.
- Hakuji’s father — Hakuji stole to buy his medicine. His suicide and dying wishes continued to influence Hakuji’s choices 176.
- Su Chen — Initially a desired opponent, later his victor and ally. Su Chen spares him on the condition of atonement and entrusts him with gathering information and seeking Tamayo’s cooperation 170 177 179 183.
- Muzan Kibutsuji — Recruiter and former master. Akaza breaks free of his control, but Muzan later reactivates the curse and possesses him 182 184 267.
- Doma — Fellow Upper Rank whom Akaza despises. Akaza rejects his false displays of friendship and openly exposes his lack of genuine emotion 155 266.
- Kyojuro Rengoku — Opponent whose talent Akaza admires enough to repeatedly invite him to become a demon 169 170.
- Tamayo — Medical adviser and fellow opponent of Muzan. Akaza wins her cooperation and agrees to her restrictions on feeding and violence 231.
- Yushiro — Initially attacks Akaza on sight. Akaza retaliates, then apologizes after Tamayo admonishes him 231.
- Tanjiro Kamado and Giyu Tomioka — Attack him in the Infinity Castle despite his claims of alliance with Su Chen, forcing him to defend himself 264.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Upper Rank Meeting and Assignment
At the Infinity Castle meeting following Su Chen’s killing of three Upper Ranks, Muzan vents his anger over Doma’s failure by injuring Akaza and crushing his throat. Doma’s mocking concern only aggravates him. Muzan subsequently assigns Akaza to support Enmu and have him control humans searching for the Blue Spider Lily 155 156.
Mugen Train Battle
Akaza attacks the Mugen Train and targets Tanjiro after recognizing his flame earrings. Kyojuro intercepts him and forces the battle outside to protect the passengers. Fascinated by Kyojuro’s tangible flames and newly awakened Demon Slayer Mark, Akaza repeatedly offers to make him a demon 168 169 170.
Su Chen intervenes when Akaza’s wide-ranging attack threatens Tanjiro, then takes over the fight. The Transparent World defeats Compass Needle’s tracking, and Su Chen dismantles Akaza’s remaining attacks, including Blue Silver Chaotic Afterglow. After negotiations fail, Akaza flees, but Su Chen predicts his movement, copies his martial mechanics, and decapitates him 170 171 172 173.
Recovery and Atonement
Akaza survives through his Supreme Domain breakthrough and returns to the train with his human memories restored. Rather than execute him, Su Chen offers a path of atonement: disclose places Muzan frequents, help lure out Doma, and cooperate against the demons. Akaza eagerly accepts, particularly the prospect of killing Doma, though Su Chen reserves the final blow for himself 176 177 178.
Their blood exchange also helps Su Chen deepen his understanding of Destructive Death, eventually developing the Destructive Asura Sword Style and Perception Compass Needle. Before parting, Su Chen helps Akaza construct a disguise and sends him to find Tamayo 179 180 183.
Seeking Tamayo
Following Su Chen’s instructions to avoid conflict, Akaza flees upon seeing Shinazugawa rather than risk fighting him. He then enters the Entertainment District in disguise 188.
Akaza eventually finds Tamayo and secures her cooperation, informing Su Chen by a letter delivered through Chachamaru. While staying with Tamayo and Yushiro, he agrees not to feed on humans or resort to violence 231.
Infinity Castle and Renewed Possession
Akaza is pulled into the Infinity Castle alongside Su Chen and the Demon Slayer Corps. Tanjiro and Giyu attack him, refusing to accept that he has changed sides. His reduced strength leaves him unable to match them, and he finally releases Destructive Death after repeated attempts to explain himself fail 263 264.
He later fights Doma, condemning his emotional emptiness and false friendship. After Su Chen kills Doma, Muzan reactivates Akaza’s curse and turns him against the badly injured Shinobu Kocho 266 267.
Su Chen intercepts the attack and calls out to Akaza beneath Muzan’s control. Akaza’s hesitation creates an opening: Su Chen immobilizes him, reaches into his heart, and uses their blood connection to drain Muzan’s strength and draw Muzan into the Memory Palace. Akaza’s condition after this intervention is not resolved in the provided account 267.
