Background / History

Shinobu and her older sister, Kanae Kocho, founded the Butterfly Mansion with operating funds supplied by the Ubuyashiki family. After Kanae was killed by a demon, Shinobu took responsibility for the mansion while continuing to undertake demon-slaying missions. The younger residents describe her as an older-sister figure who never complains about her burdens 17 94.

Kanae’s death left Shinobu consumed by anger toward demons and frustrated by her inability to fulfill her sister’s entrusted dream. She continued wearing the smile Kanae loved, even while struggling with grief and her physical inability to sever a demon’s head 26.

To prepare for a potentially fatal confrontation with her sister’s killer, Shinobu began injecting herself with wisteria poison every day, turning her own body into a reserve weapon. Su Chen discovered this plan through her diary and later identified the killer to her as Doma, Upper Rank Two 39 98.

Appearance

Shinobu is petite, slender, and graceful, with violet eyes and long black hair tipped with purple. Her butterfly-themed clothing and light movements reinforce the imagery of her Breathing Style 1 12.

  • Hair ornament: An elaborate butterfly clip holds up her hair 1.
  • Haori: A colorful butterfly-wing haori inherited from Kanae 1 73.
  • Scent: A noticeable wisteria fragrance, linked to the poison accumulated in her body 1 39.
  • Demon Slayer Mark: A black, butterfly-like marking on her back 264.

Personality

Shinobu is usually warm, approachable, and unfailingly polite. Despite her rank, she puts on no airs around the Butterfly Mansion’s residents and patients. Much of her familiar smile, however, conceals anger and exhaustion rather than happiness 17 26 193.

Her gentle manner can become sharply intimidating. She teases Shinazugawa, interrupts dangerous confrontations, and uses a sweet voice even when threatening punishment. When Su Chen is injured and the mansion damaged, her restraint breaks: she openly cries, condemns Shinazugawa’s conduct, and then forces herself back into her responsibilities as the Insect Hashira 43 44 73.

Su Chen gradually brings out a more playful and openly affectionate side of her. She becomes flustered by romantic teasing, jealous of the attention he gives other women, and visibly bashful after his care. Nevertheless, she worries that her attachment and the mansion’s needs might restrict his future 57 58 97 193 206.

Her hatred of demons is intense but not entirely unconditional. She says she would protect someone close to her who became a demon, provided they did not betray humanity. When reports suggest that Su Chen has transformed, she resolves to cure him rather than abandon him 242 252.

Abilities & Skills

Insect Breathing

Shinobu’s fighting style emphasizes footwork, deceptive movement, and rapid poisoned thrusts. It compensates for her limited physical strength: she cannot normally cut off a demon’s head, so she kills through poison instead 12.

  • Butterfly Dance: Caprice: Leaps into the air and descends with repeated thrusts too fast for ordinary vision to follow 12.
  • Dance of the Bee Sting: True Draw: One of the techniques she demonstrates to Su Chen; he later analyzes it while developing Bee Breathing 12 13.
  • Dance of the Dragonfly: Compound Eye Hexagon: A sixfold thrusting attack that delivers a large quantity of poison 12.
  • Dance of the Centipede: Hundred-Legged Serpent’s Belly / Hundred-Legged Zigzag: Uses powerful, irregular footfalls to confuse an opponent before striking. It is her fastest and most physically demanding demonstrated technique 12 73.
  • Endurance limit: Continuous high-speed techniques tire her, and the Centipede technique requires substantial oxygen while lasting only a few seconds during her demonstration 12.

Speed and Footwork

Shinobu ranks among the top two Hashira in speed. She can cross a battlefield and enter striking range before Shinazugawa responds, and her fastest movements produce afterimages 12 73.

  • Interrupts Shinazugawa’s developing attack before he can unleash it inside the Butterfly Mansion 44.
  • Outpaces the Wind and Flame Hashira when intervening in their fight 73.
  • Has comparatively poor long-distance endurance; a sustained return journey leaves her nearly unable to climb into her own courtyard 189.
  • Her custom golden blade doubles her speed during weapon testing 218.

Pharmacology and Poison

Shinobu is a highly skilled pharmacologist whose biochemical knowledge rivals her swordsmanship and footwork. Wisteria poison is central to both her combat style and laboratory research 12 25.

  • Demon-killing poison: Her usual blade dose is described as sufficient against demons below the Upper Ranks 39.
  • Anesthetics: Uses an anesthetic-coated blade to immobilize Shinazugawa through shallow wounds 73 75.
  • Poison-saturated body: Accumulates wisteria poison through daily injections as a sacrificial weapon 39.
  • Upper Rank research: Recognizes that the blood and severed limbs left by Su Chen could help her develop poison effective against Upper Ranks 108.
  • Limitation against Doma: Her poison melts his eye and surrounding tissue, but he rapidly breaks it down and regenerates 264.

Medicine and Research

Shinobu treats patients while overseeing the Corps’ principal medical facility. Her work includes diagnosis, injections, trauma care, transfusion research, and rehabilitation planning 4 50 57 75 205.

  • Identifies disease-related characteristics in a blood sample and distinguishes it from Su Chen’s blood 25.
  • Investigates Su Chen’s unusual transfusion compatibility, finding Shinazugawa’s blood compatible after her own, Kanao’s, and Inosuke’s are rejected 75.
  • Researches Shinazugawa’s blood and its possible connection to Genya’s demon-eater constitution 75.
  • Is assigned by Kagaya Ubuyashiki to work with Tamayo 242.
  • Considers Tamayo a possible source of help in restoring Su Chen’s humanity 252.

Administration and Security

Shinobu manages medical staff, patient care, rehabilitation, and security alongside her field assignments 5 50 96.

  • Establishes the rescue contest’s three stages: recovering wounded patients, treating them, and assisting rehabilitation 50.
  • Enforces a prohibition on destructive fighting inside the mansion 44 73.
  • Uses a reagent to confirm demon activity near the mountain and prepares a detailed evacuation plan 96.
  • Keeps the mansion open to wounded Corps members despite her distress over Su Chen’s capture 107.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Original Nichirin Blade: An unusually shaped weapon with much of its cutting edge removed, designed for poisoned thrusts rather than conventional slashing. It was designed by the chief of the Swordsmith Village 11 12.
  • Blade Ring modification: Su Chen adds six rings with copper fittings and hollow spaces for poison storage, making her existing blade lighter and reducing the need for frequent replenishment 76 217.
  • Custom golden Nichirin Blade: Forged by Su Chen specifically for her low strength and high speed. Only its tip uses the usual crimson red iron sand and scarlet crimson ore alloy; the rest uses other high-quality alloys that permit a lighter, thinner construction 214 217 218.
    • Internal channels distribute poison from the Blade Rings across the weapon.
    • Uses about one-third as much refined wisteria poison as her previous system.
    • Retains a poison charge for an extended period, avoiding repeated sheathing to recoat the blade.
    • Its tip later pierces Doma’s palm and eye 218 264.
  • Wisteria poison bottle: Carries blue-purple poison for replenishing her weapon 218.
  • Kanae’s haori: Both everyday clothing and a cherished reminder of her sister 73.
  • Diary: Addresses entries to Kanae and records her grief, research, concerns about the mansion, and developing feelings for Su Chen 39 96 97.

Relationships

  • Kanae Kocho — Older sister and central influence. Shinobu inherits her haori, protects the mansion she left behind, and pursues revenge for her death 26 73.
  • Su Chen — Initially someone she rescues, later her student, medical colleague, co-administrator, and romantic interest. By the time his humanity comes into question, she explicitly regards him as family; no formal relationship is established in the supplied events 1 12 94 98 252.
  • Kanao Tsuyuri — Apprentice, designated successor, and younger-sister figure. Shinobu refuses to let an injured Kanao accompany her search for Su Chen because she fears losing her too 14 16 154.
  • Aoi Kanzaki — Trusted assistant who helps run the mansion. Aoi credits Shinobu with taking her in when she might otherwise have become homeless 5 40.
  • Kiyo, Sumi, and Xiao Caihui — Young mansion residents who treat her as a beloved older sister and openly seek her affection 17 42.
  • Sanemi Shinazugawa — Fellow Hashira and frequent target of her teasing. Their conflicts escalate when his fighting endangers Su Chen and damages the mansion 43 44 73.
  • Kyojuro Rengoku — Fellow Hashira whom she asks to train Su Chen. He helps calm her after Su Chen’s injury and contributes his funding allocation to the mansion 39 73 74.
  • Kagaya Ubuyashiki — Corps leader who directs her assignments, approves shared management of the mansion, and orders her collaboration with Tamayo 94 242.
  • Tamayo — Assigned research collaborator and potential ally in finding a cure for Su Chen 242 252.
  • Doma — Kanae’s killer and the focus of Shinobu’s revenge. His regeneration ultimately overcomes the poison delivered through her blade 98 264.
