Background / History
Clan Origins and Search for Recognition
Yu Xiaogang is the second son of Yu Yuanzhen, patriarch of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. His mutated Martial Soul causes extremely slow cultivation, leaving him below level 20 at fifteen or sixteen. His uncle Yu Luomian openly despises his poor aptitude, while his father’s position protects him from expulsion 3 14.
He leaves the clan seeking an opportunity to improve his strength and prove himself. Recognition from his father and family is his deepest ambition, making insults about his usefulness particularly provocative 12 33.
Suotuo City’s Great Soul Arena
Yu Xiaogang enters Suotuo City’s Great Soul Arena despite being below its normal qualifying strength. The arena permits this because of his clan background. Facing a level-31 Soul Elder, he refuses repeated requests to surrender and insists on proving that he is not worthless, but is ultimately kicked off the platform 5 6 7.
Bibi Dong initially wipes blood from his mouth with a silk handkerchief. After Zhao Ling’s diary describes Yu Xiaogang repeatedly sniffing it, she beats him unconscious with a chair and throws the handkerchief away. Yu Xiaogang does not recognize her as his attacker: he believes someone ambushed him and stole her gift 6 7 10.
His infatuation keeps him at the arena despite repeated injuries. He offers information about contestants to ingratiate himself with Bibi Dong’s party, while she tolerates him only because that information is useful. He interprets her avoidance as shyness and imagines marrying her 7 10.
His hostility toward Zhao Ling escalates into a revenge campaign. Zhao Ling’s damage-transfer ability costs him teeth, and an attempted stool ambush ends when Qian Hu intervenes. The resulting beating damages his thoracic spine and left kidney 20 21 27.
Yu Xiaolong’s Intervention
After the arena informs the clan, Yu Xiaolong arrives to retrieve his younger brother under their father’s orders. Yu Xiaogang refuses to leave without Bibi Dong, then agrees to return if his brother first punishes Zhao Ling 20 23 27.
A hired Healing-type Soul Saint repairs his spinal injury but cannot completely heal his kidney. The healer warns of possible impotence or infertility. Yu Xiaolong promises to find further treatment 27.
The brothers eventually confront Zhao Ling, with Yu Xiaolong demanding that he kneel and apologize. Zhao Ling defeats them both, inflicting a particularly severe brain injury on Yu Xiaolong. Their attendants take them for emergency treatment and then carry them back to the clan 30 32.
Imprisonment and Escape
At home, treatment restores Yu Xiaogang’s consciousness, but he continues to suffer concussion symptoms. Yu Xiaolong’s cognitive impairment provokes outrage among the clan’s elders. Yu Yuanzhen orders Yu Xiaogang imprisoned in the clan dungeon for ten years 33.
During confinement, his uncle and the elders repeatedly beat him. He learns that Zhao Ling is a Titled Douluo and that Bibi Dong has become Zhao Ling’s fiancée. One encounter with the elders leaves him with a broken leg 50 123.
After five years, he has lost all his teeth and survives on liquid food. His kidney injury has left him impotent. He eventually escapes, wearing clothes taken from a corpse, but finds that Bibi Dong has forbidden every Spirit Hall branch from giving him financial assistance 105 109.
He reaches Nuoding Junior Soul Master Academy and seeks its dean, an old friend. After subduing a hostile gatekeeper with Luo Sanpao, he is reunited with the dean, who provides a bath, clean clothes, and food 109.
Tang San and the Recovery of His Reputation
At Nuoding Academy, Yu Xiaogang intervenes in a dispute between Tang San and the gatekeeper. Tang San recognizes him as his teacher from a previous life and reveals secrets that gradually convince him of the rebirth claim 122.
Yu Xiaogang sees Tang San as a future means of defeating Zhao Ling and reclaiming Bibi Dong. He becomes exceptionally attentive to the boy, bringing him food and watching over him during illness. Tang San, in turn, promises to avenge him 122 123 124.
His imprisonment has prevented him from studying Spirit City’s ancient texts and developing the theories associated with his original-story counterpart. Tang San therefore dictates those theories to him. Yu Xiaogang transcribes them and sends copies to Spirit Hall and the Upper Three Sects; their subsequent continent-wide circulation earns him the title Grandmaster 109 129 161.
Shrek Academy
Yu Xiaogang accompanies Tang San to Shrek Academy. Flender initially questions his low Soul Power, but welcomes both after learning of his reputation and confirming Tang San’s talent 160 161.
He later discusses Tang San’s proposal to admit three additional candidates with Flender and reports that the academy will consider them. His Martial Soul defect remains unresolved; Tang San’s companions discuss a possible solution, but no successful treatment is documented 169.
Original-Story Counterpart
The diary and Tang San describe a different life in which Yu Xiaogang loved Bibi Dong, later became involved with his paternal cousin Liu Erlong, and nearly married her before Yu Luomian intervened. Liu Erlong subsequently remained his wife in spirit 13 32 123.
That counterpart traveled with Flender, became Tang San’s teacher and adoptive father, and developed the theories credited to Grandmaster. These relationships and achievements are not automatically shared by the current Yu Xiaogang: he initially does not even know who Liu Erlong is 122 123 129 161.
Appearance
- Youthful appearance: Ordinary features, short black hair parted three-to-seven, and a distinctive, somewhat distinguished bearing 5.
- After imprisonment: Filthy and dressed in rags when he arrives at Nuoding Academy, having gone without bathing throughout his confinement 109.
- Gold teeth: Eventually replaces his lost teeth with a full set of gold teeth, borrowing money from his friend to pay for them 123.
- Biased family description: Yu Luomian calls him crooked-mouthed and cross-eyed, but the narration explicitly identifies this as prejudice rather than an accurate description 14.
Personality
Yu Xiaogang’s determination is closely tied to insecurity about his aptitude. He endures an overwhelmingly unequal arena match to prove himself, yet reacts furiously when Zhao Ling invokes his father, clan, or cultivation limits 5 12.
His pursuit of Bibi Dong is marked by persistent misinterpretation. He mistakes her disgust for shyness, rejects warnings about her hostility, and suspects that attempts to send him home are schemes by a romantic rival. Even after learning that she is with Zhao Ling, he insists that coercion must explain her choice 7 15 19 122.
He relies heavily on clan status despite resenting the family’s contempt. He expects arena staff to defer to him and considers pity from a maid beneath his position. His imprisonment does, however, teach him patience, which he later applies while hunting his second Soul Ring 18 20 109.
His care for Tang San combines affection with self-interest. He is moved by the boy’s loyalty and delighted by the prospect of an adoptive son, but repeatedly views Tang San’s future strength as the route to revenge and reunion with Bibi Dong 123 129 160.
Abilities & Skills
Luo Sanpao
Luo Sanpao is a manifested Martial Soul resembling a dog with a pig’s build, four short, thick legs, and a bump on its head 5.
- First Soul Skill — Earth-Shattering Luo Sanpao: Invoked with “fart like thunder.” It fails to overcome the enormous gap between Yu Xiaogang and his level-31 arena opponent 5.
- Second Soul Skill — Hypnotic mist: Invoked with “Fart like mist, hypnotize into slumber, Luo Sanpao!” Its emissions immediately put an ordinary gatekeeper to sleep 109.
- Support use: Helps Tang San hunt a Mandala Snake by preparing his second skill to daze it 129.
- Cultivation limitation: His mutation is described as preventing him from surpassing level 29 without a remedy; no such remedy is shown succeeding 169.
Soul Master Theory
His published reputation rests on theories supplied by the reborn Tang San rather than independently developed research in this timeline 129 161.
- Martial Soul Mimicry Theory: Learns from Tang San how an animal-type Soul Ring can suit a plant-type Martial Soul 129.
- Publication: Transcribes the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul and submits copies to Spirit Hall and the Upper Three Sects 161.
- Scope: The theories remain useful to most Soul Masters, though they do not reliably describe exceptional geniuses 161.
Trapping and Investigation
- Patient hunting: Constructs traps and gradually exhausts a two-hundred-year-old Soul Beast to obtain his second ring, though he still suffers injuries 109.
- Arena intelligence: Learns the abilities of many Suotuo contestants and uses that knowledge to assist Bibi Dong’s party 10.
- Paid inquiries: Hires an arena employee to investigate Zhao Ling 20.
- Protecting his disciple: Investigates the people behind an assault on Tang San and traces them to merchants who have recently left Nuoding City 144.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Gold dentures — Replace the teeth lost during his Suotuo City conflicts 123.
- Godly Zhuge Crossbow — Obtained at auction and later given to Tang San after Yu Xiaogang learns of his expertise with hidden weapons 129.
- Bibi Dong’s silk handkerchief — Treasured as a romantic gift; actually reclaimed and discarded by Bibi Dong while he is unconscious 7.
- Wooden stool — Used in his unsuccessful ambush on Zhao Ling, then turned against him during the ensuing beating 27.
Relationships
- Yu Yuanzhen — Father and clan patriarch. Protects him from the elders’ pressure before sentencing him to ten years in the dungeon after Yu Xiaolong’s injury 32 33.
- Yu Xiaolong — Protective elder brother. Attempts to bring him home, pays for treatment, and confronts Zhao Ling on his behalf; his resulting brain injury leaves Yu Xiaogang deeply regretful 23 27 32.
- Yu Luomian — Paternal uncle. Despises his aptitude, advocates expulsion, and participates in his mistreatment during imprisonment 14 22 123.
- Bibi Dong — Object of his unrequited obsession. She despises him, repeatedly attacks him, and later bars him from Spirit Hall’s financial assistance 7 109.
- Zhao Ling — Enemy and perceived romantic rival. Yu Xiaogang blames him for his suffering and hopes Tang San will eventually kill him 109 122.
- Liu Erlong — Younger paternal cousin and his original-story counterpart’s wife in spirit. After learning of that history, he expresses interest in her despite their blood relationship 123.
- Tang San — Disciple, hoped-for avenger, and source of his published theories. Tang San remembers him as both teacher and adoptive father from his previous life 124 129.
- Nuoding Academy’s dean — Old friend who shelters him after his escape and later helps him obtain replacement teeth 109 123.
- Tang Hao — Disciple’s father. Trusts him to care for Tang San and reveals their previous-life adoptive relationship 129.
- Flender — Welcomes him into Shrek Academy because of his theoretical reputation and Tang San’s talent; their original-story sworn brotherhood has not carried over into an established friendship 161.
