Personality

Tanjiro’s kindness initially makes killing difficult for him. He hesitates to strike a demon’s severed head and loses sleep after finally bringing down his axe. Although Lu You calls him too kind, Tanjiro considers himself indecisive and credits Lu You with genuine kindness for protecting others despite danger 5.

He is exceptionally diligent. Urokodaki’s demanding expectations motivate rather than discourage him, and Lu You later uses Tanjiro’s habit of training all day and continuing at night as an example for Zenitsu 7 11.

His gratitude toward his protectors develops into a determination to stand beside them. At Mount Natagumo, he recognizes how often others have sheltered him and chooses to confront Shinobu himself. Later, he confirms that he will continue fighting even if Nezuko becomes human, both to help Lu You and to fulfill his promise to kill Muzan 24 25 29.

Tanjiro trusts Lu You almost unquestioningly, assuming that even unfamiliar instructions contain a deeper meaning. Nevertheless, he understands why other Demon Slayers struggle to accept Nezuko: he regards their acceptance as a kindness rather than something he is owed 25 27.

Family Tragedy and Mount Sagiri

Tanjiro returns home to find his family killed and Nezuko transformed into a demon. When Giyu attempts to execute her, Lu You intervenes. Tanjiro’s resistance and Nezuko’s decision to protect him persuade Giyu to spare her and direct them to Urokodaki 3 4.

After burying his family, Tanjiro travels with Lu You and Nezuko toward Mount Sagiri. Their encounter with a man-eating demon forces him to confront the responsibility of protecting innocent people, including the possibility that Nezuko might someday become dangerous 4 5.

He remains with Urokodaki after Lu You leaves to study another Breathing Style. Before parting, Tanjiro promises to catch up with him 7 8.

Searching for Nezuko’s Cure

After passing the reformed Corps examination, Tanjiro travels on missions with Nezuko and meets Tamayo in Tokyo. She explains that blood from a Twelve Kizuki-level demon could aid research into restoring demons to humanity. Tanjiro writes to Lu You, who tells him that his collected Upper Rank blood is with Shinobu 24.

Tanjiro also forms close bonds with Zenitsu and Inosuke. All three are defeated by Rui on Mount Natagumo before Giyu rescues them. When Shinobu and Sanemi target Nezuko, Giyu holds off Sanemi while Tanjiro attempts to escape 24.

Tanjiro ultimately turns to face Shinobu. She abandons the confrontation after learning that Lu You trusts the siblings, and Kagaya subsequently orders them brought safely to headquarters 25.

Upper Rank Battles

Lu You takes Tanjiro to the Uradome Coast to confront Gyokko, hoping combat will help him awaken the Transparent World. Their pursuit ends at a sea-cliff cave, where Lu You creates the opening for Tanjiro’s decapitation strike. They collect Gyokko’s blood for Nezuko’s treatment 27 28 29.

Tanjiro then joins intensive training. Months later, he witnesses Nezuko standing unharmed in sunlight and addressing him as her big brother 29.

During the final assault, Tanjiro enters the Infinity Castle paired with Giyu. Akaza intercepts them as they try to reach Lu You. Both suffer severe injuries, but Tanjiro’s breakthrough allows him to save Giyu and help defeat Upper Rank Three. Akaza ultimately relinquishes his struggle after remembering his human past, and both swordsmen collapse from exhaustion 31 35 36.

After Muzan’s Defeat

Tanjiro reaches Lu You only after Muzan has been defeated. Distraught that he could not help sooner, he begs Lu You not to die. Lu You reassures him and asks him to cherish his future with Nezuko, who has been restored to humanity through medicine 41.

Following the Corps’ dissolution, Tanjiro returns to Mount Kumotori with Nezuko. He continues training despite the disappearance of demons, determined never again to watch helplessly as loved ones die. Several years later, while visiting Lu You’s grave with Kanao and Nezuko, he senses an unexplained call and asks who is there 41.
