Background / History
Human Past
Akaza was a human martial artist before becoming a demon. By the final battle, he remained obsessed with becoming stronger but could no longer remember why he sought strength—and did not want to remember. His memories of his master and Koyuki returned only during his defeat 30 35 36.
Upper Rank Gathering
Following Gyutaro’s death, Akaza was summoned to the Infinity Castle with the surviving Upper Ranks. Briefly hoping that Doma was the one who had died, he became disgusted when Doma appeared beside him. After Doma touched his shoulder and taunted him, Akaza punched away the lower half of his face 22 23.
Akaza accepted responsibility when Muzan condemned the Upper Ranks’ failure to locate the Ubuyashiki Family and the Blue Spider Lily. Upon learning about Lu You, Gyutaro’s killer, he volunteered to bring Muzan the swordsman’s head. Muzan left without assigning the mission, and the demons dispersed 23 24.
Valley of the End
Akaza joined Kokushibo, Doma, and Hantengu in confronting Lu You during Muzan’s attempt to seize Nezuko. He asked Lu You’s name and reacted sharply when the swordsman identified him as a former human martial artist. His hostility briefly gave way to delight when Lu You pointedly dismissed Doma 30.
The explosives prepared by Lu You and Ubuyashiki devastated Akaza and the other Upper Ranks. Recognizing the danger of a follow-up attack, Akaza urged them to regenerate quickly. Nakime transported the surviving demons into the Infinity Castle before the Demon Slayers could finish them 31.
Infinity Castle Battle and Death
After recovering, Akaza intercepted Tanjiro and Giyu as they attempted to reach Lu You. He welcomed the opportunity to fight two powerful opponents, but Muzan ordered him to finish them quickly and come to his aid. Akaza activated Compass Needle and unleashed Blue-Silver Chaotic Afterglow, severely wounding both swordsmen despite Giyu activating his Demon Slayer Mark 35.
When Giyu counterattacked with Constant Flux, Akaza predicted his movements, broke his Nichirin Blade, and prepared a killing blow. Tanjiro intervened, severing Akaza’s fist. Having learned the Transparent World, Tanjiro subsequently made his presence disappear, escaped Compass Needle’s detection, and cut Akaza’s neck with Hinokami Kagura, Ninth Form: Setting Sun Turn 36.
Akaza caught his falling head and attempted to put it back in place. Tanjiro then struck him with the simplified Black Flash taught by Lu You, sending his head into a wall. The blow brought back memories of his master and Koyuki. Akaza abandoned his resistance, disintegrated, and walked resolutely toward Hell, where someone was waiting for him 36.
Appearance
- Youthful appearance: Described as a young man 30 35.
- Blue tattoos: Markings cover his body 35.
- Golden eyes: His irises bear the words “Upper Rank” and “Three” 23 35.
Personality
Akaza’s central obsession is strength. He actively seeks powerful opponents, delights in their fighting spirit, and repeatedly asks their names so that he can remember them. During his battle with Tanjiro and Giyu, he regrets having to end the encounter before fully experiencing their martial skills 35 36.
His admiration for strength accompanies an intense contempt for weakness. Tanjiro’s determination while grievously wounded disgusts him, and he insists that weaklings should die. When Tanjiro suggests that this hatred is rooted in self-blame, Akaza responds with fury. His recovered memories ultimately lead him to stop fighting rather than continue pursuing strength 36.
Although outwardly deferential to Muzan, Akaza does not possess deep personal devotion to him. He regards Muzan primarily as someone whose orders he must follow, placing his own pursuit of strength above concern for Muzan’s survival 23 30 35.
Abilities & Skills
Unarmed Combat and Physical Strength
Akaza specializes in close combat, using punches, kicks, and destructive air pressure rather than weapons 35 37.
- Launches Tanjiro more than ten meters with a kick, despite Tanjiro blocking with his blade 35.
- Twists in midair and attacks from an inhuman angle to evade a strike at his neck 35.
- Breaks Giyu’s Nichirin Blade with a direct strike while Giyu is severely exhausted 36.
High-Speed Regeneration
Akaza rapidly replaces lost body parts and survives otherwise catastrophic injuries 31 35.
- Regrows both severed legs before landing 35.
- Survives the Valley of the End explosion despite extensive burns and bodily destruction, then recovers inside the Infinity Castle 31 35.
- Attempts to reattach his severed head during his final battle; the encounter ends after Black Flash restores his memories and he gives up resisting 36.
Destructive Death: Compass Needle
Activated with the declaration “Cursed Technique Deployment: Destructive Death: Compass Needle,” this technique creates an ice-crystal snowflake-like array beneath Akaza and heightens his perception 35.
- Detects Giyu’s movements and predicts his next attack, allowing Akaza to counter Constant Flux 36.
- Fails to track Tanjiro after Tanjiro’s presence vanishes during their final exchange 36.
Destructive Death: Air Type
Akaza uses this named technique while reacting to Tanjiro’s attack from behind 35.
- During the exchange, he twists out of the sword’s path and counterattacks with a powerful kick 35.
Destructive Death, Final Form: Blue-Silver Chaotic Afterglow
Akaza’s ultimate attack releases a dense, multidirectional barrage of punches and blue fist-pressure blasts 35.
- Tears through floors and buildings across its path 35.
- Saturates the battlefield so thoroughly that Tanjiro can only protect his vital points, suffering wounds even while avoiding direct hits 35.
- Continues for dozens of seconds and leaves Akaza gasping afterward, creating an opening for Giyu’s counterattack 35.
Relationships
- Muzan Kibutsuji — Superior. Muzan favors Akaza most among the Upper Ranks, while Akaza follows his orders without sharing that degree of personal attachment 23 35.
- Doma — Fellow Upper Rank whom Akaza openly despises. Akaza hopes for his death, strikes him for unwanted familiarity, and enjoys seeing Lu You dismiss him 23 30.
- Lu You — Enemy whose strength attracts Akaza’s interest. Akaza twice offers to kill him for Muzan, but never receives the direct confrontation he seeks 23 30.
- Giyu Tomioka — Final-battle opponent. Akaza admires his fighting spirit and repeatedly requests his name before nearly killing him 35 36.
- Tanjiro Kamado — Final-battle opponent whose persistence provokes Akaza’s hatred of weakness. Tanjiro defeats him and delivers the Black Flash that restores his memories 36.
- His master and Koyuki — Figures from his human past whom he remembers immediately before abandoning his struggle 36.
