Power Progression
The stage labels below describe documented changes rather than formal cultivation ranks.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fifth Division Captain; Complete Hypnosis user | 24 31 | Uses Kyōka Suigetsu to conceal his activities and fabricate his death. Defeats Renji and Komamura before escaping Soul Society. |
| Initial Hōgyoku-assisted evolution | 52 | States that his spiritual body has begun evolving toward a higher dimension. A million-layered Reiatsu shield prevents Yoriichi’s Shikai attacks from reaching his body. |
| Soul Reaper–Hollow boundary surpassed | 56 | Declares that he has broken through the boundary between Soul Reapers and Hollows. White material begins spreading from his chest as his Reiatsu erupts. |
| White chrysalis | 57 | Severe injuries inflicted by Yoriichi accelerate the Hōgyoku’s response. A white shell envelops his body, his Reiatsu rises sharply, and he repeatedly regenerates. |
| Emergence from the chrysalis | 57 | The shell breaks apart, revealing long black hair, black eyes with white pupils, and the Hōgyoku fused into his chest and soul. Injuries to his throat, heart, and limbs are immediately restored. |
| Final Hōgyoku fusion; winged transformation | 58 | The apparently shattered Hōgyoku’s fragments enter his body and complete its fusion. He develops three pairs of skeletal butterfly wings, a chest hole, and an arm fused with Kyōka Suigetsu. Most observers can no longer sense his Reiatsu. |
| Reversion under suppression | 58 | Yoriichi overwhelms the winged form and suppresses further evolution through the Sunlit Pure Realm. Aizen returns to his original appearance and is sealed by Urahara. |
| Existence equivalent to Kyōka Suigetsu | 257 258 | Reveals that he no longer requires a drawn blade or visible Shikai release to hypnotize others. His evolved hypnosis also overcomes Azashiro’s former immunity through environmental fusion. The precise timing of this advancement is not established. |
History
Conspiracy and Defection
Long before his open rebellion, Aizen’s subordinates took a fragment of Rangiku Matsumoto’s soul that could be absorbed by the Hōgyoku. Gin Ichimaru witnessed the aftermath and spent more than a century concealing his desire to kill Aizen and recover what Rangiku had lost 110.
During the Ryoka invasion, Aizen staged his own murder, directing suspicion toward the intruders while moving his operation into the shadows. His conspiracy included murdering every member of Central 46. Unohana eventually noticed a flaw in the false corpse produced through Complete Hypnosis 24 31.
At Sōkyoku Hill, Aizen defeated Renji and Komamura and extracted the Hōgyoku hidden in Rukia’s spiritual body. Byakuya stopped his subsequent attempt to kill her. Surrounded by the captains, Aizen escaped with Gin and Kaname Tōsen through Negación, declaring his intention to stand above the existing heavenly order. Yoriichi briefly cracked the barrier but could not prevent their departure for Hueco Mundo 31.
Battle for Karakura Town
Aizen intended to use Karakura Town’s spiritual concentration to create the Ōken. Yamamoto suspected that Orihime’s abduction was intended to draw Yoriichi into Hueco Mundo, removing the only current captain who could reliably oppose Kyōka Suigetsu. Yoriichi therefore remained behind for the confrontation 48.
During the battle, Aizen adapted to Shinji Hirako’s reversed perceptions and defeated him. He then deceived the surrounding Soul Reapers into identifying Momo Hinamori as himself; Yoriichi stopped Hitsugaya before he could stab her 51.
Aizen initially held Yoriichi off with Kidō, swordsmanship, and his Reiatsu shield. Gin drew Yoriichi away, allowing Aizen to deploy Wonderweiss against Yamamoto. Aizen also prepared a specialized Hollow capable of imprisoning Yoriichi in a sealed void, but that confinement instead helped Yoriichi understand Bankai 52 53 56.
Yoriichi’s return overturned the fight. Although the Hōgyoku repeatedly healed and evolved Aizen, Yoriichi overwhelmed every transformation and suppressed its further response. Urahara’s previously implanted sealing Kidō then activated, binding Aizen inside a layered seal. The surviving Arrancar surrendered or stopped fighting after his defeat 57 58 59.
Imprisonment in Muken
In Muken, Azashiro removed some of Aizen’s seals and discussed his plan to eliminate Hollows by altering human brains. Aizen challenged the plan’s understanding of desire and warned him not to judge Yoriichi by Reiatsu alone 69.
Yhwach later offered Aizen an alliance to destroy the boundaries between the Three Realms. Aizen refused, distinguishing his desire to transcend the world from Yhwach’s intention to return it to chaos. He also recognized Yoriichi as a variable capable of disrupting Yhwach’s foresight 171.
Temporary Alliance Against Yhwach
After the Soul King’s death, Yoriichi visited Muken to recruit Aizen. Aizen agreed to oppose Yhwach because he refused to let anyone control his will—not because he accepted the Gotei 13’s protective ideals. Yoriichi explicitly rejected any lasting partnership between them 213 214.
Kyōraku introduced Aizen and Azashiro as reinforcements despite the captains’ objections. Aizen remained restrained, with Azashiro assigned to monitor him. He nevertheless disregarded orders to stay beneath Wahrwelt, opened a passage into the fortress, and suppressed Azashiro’s attempt to stop him through sheer Reiatsu 219 220 235.
After sensing Kyōraku’s Reiatsu, Aizen approached the battle with Lille Barro and took over the confrontation. Kyōka Suigetsu made Lille’s apparent victories illusory and caused his attacks to strike his own body. The encounter left both Kyōraku and Azashiro deeply concerned about how much more dangerous Aizen had become 249 253 257 258.
Appearance
Aizen has a tall, slender build and habitually maintains a composed expression. His presentation changes sharply when he abandons his captain persona and again during his Hōgyoku transformations 31 57 235.
- Before his defection: Wears black-framed glasses and presents a gentle smile 31 244.
- At his escape: Crushes his glasses and sweeps his hair back, discarding his formerly gentle demeanor 31.
- Chrysalis form: His clothes and facial features disappear beneath a deathly white shell, leaving a vertical opening for his eyes 57.
- Post-chrysalis form: Has black hair reaching his lower back, black eyes with white pupils, and an exposed Hōgyoku embedded in his chest 57.
- Winged form: Develops a vertical forehead marking, loses his eyebrows, and gains a black chest hole and three pairs of skeletal butterfly wings 58.
- During the Wahrwelt campaign: Wears a sealing garment that binds his arms while leaving his head uncovered 219 249.
Personality
Aizen cultivates an appearance of courtesy while treating trust as something to exploit. He openly describes Kira and Hinamori as pawns and explains that people’s willingness to believe appearances makes them easy to manipulate 31.
His ambition rests on a hierarchy of higher and lower lives. He regards life as material for transcendence and dismisses the need to understand ordinary people’s suffering. Yoriichi identifies the contradiction between Aizen’s criticism of Soul Society’s rulers and his own desire to dominate others 31 56.
His composure becomes fragile when his superiority is challenged. Yoriichi’s criticism provokes visible anger, while the apparent destruction of the Hōgyoku causes panic. Even after being decisively overpowered, Aizen insists that Urahara’s seal—not Yoriichi—caused his defeat 56 57 58.
Imprisonment does not make him obedient. He refuses Yhwach’s authority, ignores Kyōraku’s warnings, and treats Azashiro’s supervision with contempt. Nevertheless, he acknowledges Yoriichi’s resolve in sacrificing his power to sustain the Three Realms 171 220 235 249.
Abilities & Skills
Kyōka Suigetsu — Complete Hypnosis
Kyōka Suigetsu manipulates its victims’ sensory experience, making false people, injuries, and surroundings appear convincing 31 51 257.
- Established activation condition: Targets become susceptible after seeing its Shikai release. Yamamoto and every current captain except Yoriichi had already been exposed before the Karakura battle 48 52.
- False identities and bodies: Produces the corpse used to fake Aizen’s death and makes the Soul Reapers mistake Hinamori for him 31 51.
- Evolved activation: By the Lille battle, Aizen’s existence itself functions as Kyōka Suigetsu; drawing a sword is no longer necessary 257.
- Battlefield deception: Makes Lille’s attacks strike himself while observers perceive an entirely different battle 257.
- Danger to allies: Kyōraku suspects that their senses were manipulated upon arrival. Azashiro detects a small Reishi inconsistency but cannot free his sight, touch, or spatial perception from the illusion 257 258.
- Yoriichi limitation: Transparent World does not automatically negate the ability, but it can expose anatomical and Reiatsu inconsistencies. Fully deceiving Yoriichi would require an exceptionally detailed illusion 54.
Reiatsu and Defensive Pressure
Aizen uses overwhelming Reiatsu both to defend himself and to suppress opponents 52 235.
- Maintains a million-layered shield that initially prevents Yoriichi’s Sun Reiatsu from reaching his body 52.
- Releases enough pressure during evolution to collapse surrounding buildings 57.
- Stops Azashiro’s slash inches from his restrained body through Reiatsu alone 235.
- His shield is not absolute: Yoriichi’s Bankai steadily dissolves it 56 57.
Kidō
Aizen employs high-level offensive and defensive spells 52 58.
| Technique | Use and demonstrated limits |
|---|---|
| Hadō #63: Raikōhō | Fires golden lightning at close range. Yoriichi analyzes and cancels its structure 52. |
| Hadō #90: Black Coffin | Encloses a target in black Reiatsu and attacks with internal spears. Its full-incantation version distorts space, but Yoriichi cuts through it 52 57 58. |
| Bakudō #81: Dankū | Creates a transparent defensive wall. Yoriichi breaks it after reproducing its Reishi structure 52. |
Hōgyoku Regeneration and Evolution
The Hōgyoku answers Aizen’s wishes by restoring his body and driving further transformations under pressure 57 58.
- Restores severed limbs and injuries to vital areas 57.
- Repairs damage inflicted by Sun Reiatsu, although such wounds are harder to heal than ordinary injuries 54 57.
- Survives apparent shattering by fusing its fragments more completely into Aizen 58.
- Makes killing him nearly impossible according to Urahara, who prepares a seal instead 58.
- Further evolution can be suppressed by Yoriichi’s Sunlit Pure Realm 58.
Swordsmanship, Shunpo, and Perception
Aizen combines precise swordplay with rapid analysis of unfamiliar abilities 31 51 52.
- Overwhelms Renji and defeats Komamura during his escape 31.
- Adapts to Sakanade’s reversed perceptions and counterattacks Shinji 51.
- Blocks Yoriichi’s rapid consecutive attacks before the latter’s Bankai breakthrough 52.
- Uses high-level Shunpo to cross hundreds of meters in Wahrwelt despite his restraints 249.
- Opens a passage to Wahrwelt without any visible hand movement 235.
Preparation and Specialized Countermeasures
Aizen prepares dedicated counters for opponents he considers dangerous 52 53.
- Wonderweiss: Prepared specifically to counter Ryūjin Jakka by absorbing Yamamoto’s flames 52.
- Void-imprisoning Hollow: Sacrifices other capabilities for a spatial prison that cuts off Reiatsu and energy techniques. Intended to remove Yoriichi from the battle 53.
- Failure of the plan: The void gives Yoriichi the opportunity to understand Bankai and return stronger 56.
Equipment & Items
- Kyōka Suigetsu — His Zanpakuto and original medium for Complete Hypnosis; later fuses with his right arm during his winged transformation 31 58.
- Hōgyoku — Extracted from Rukia and subsequently fused with Aizen’s body and soul 31 57 58.
- Black-framed glasses — Destroyed when he openly abandons his former persona 31 244.
- Sealing restraints — Muken bindings and a specially made restraint garment restrict his movement and Reiatsu. They do not prevent his later use of Shunpo, overwhelming pressure, or hypnosis 213 220 235 249 257.
Relationships
- Yoriichi Tsugikuni — Principal opponent and repeatedly rejected prospective partner. Their temporary alliance against Yhwach does not resolve their fundamental disagreement over power and the value of life 31 52 56 213 214.
- Gin Ichimaru — Longtime subordinate who secretly sought revenge for Rangiku. Gin concealed his intentions for over a century but failed to kill Aizen 110.
- Kaname Tōsen — Fellow defector who accompanies him to Hueco Mundo. Tōsen kills himself after Aizen’s defeat rather than return to Soul Society 31 59.
- Momo Hinamori — A subordinate he treats as a pawn. He later uses hypnosis to place her in the path of Hitsugaya’s attack 31 51.
- Rukia Kuchiki — Targeted because Urahara concealed the Hōgyoku within her. Aizen extracts it and then attempts to kill her 31.
- Kisuke Urahara — Opponent who anticipates the difficulty of killing him and implants the Kidō that ultimately seals him 58.
- Sōya Azashiro — Fellow Muken prisoner, conversational partner, and later assigned guard. Aizen repeatedly disregards his attempts at control 69 220 235 258.
- Shunsui Kyōraku — Reluctant wartime ally who authorizes his deployment but remains deeply distrustful of him 219 220 258.
- Yhwach — Would-be recruiter turned common enemy. Aizen refuses to accept his authority or permit him to determine his fate 171 213.
- Rangiku Matsumoto — Victim of soul-fragment theft carried out by Aizen’s subordinates, motivating Gin’s revenge 110.
