Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Spiritually aware human 1 Possesses spiritual power far beyond ordinary humans and instinctively sees the dead, but lacks control.
Borrowed Soul Reaper powers 1 2 Accepts Rukia’s blade through his chest, unintentionally taking all her remaining Soul Reaper power rather than half. Gains a shihakushō and an enormous Zanpakutō.
Own Soul Reaper power awakened; Zangetsu named 16 17 After Rukia’s residual power is destroyed and his Chain of Fate is severed, resists Hollowfication and meets Zangetsu. Calls its name, unleashes Getsuga Tenshō, and escapes the training pit.
Consistent Crescent Moon Slash 18 Learns to concentrate Reiatsu along Zangetsu’s edge through repeated combat with Yoriichi, eventually releasing the technique consistently.
Breathing-based spiritual control 21 Becomes the first trainee to grasp Yoriichi’s breathing method. Stabilizes his spiritual power sufficiently to help maintain the group’s Spirit Core shield.
Bankai 26 28 Completes Yoruichi’s accelerated training with the Tenshintai. His enormous sword becomes a black longsword, with compressed power chiefly increasing his speed.
Hollowfication accessed, but unstable 38 46 Recalls an inner white personality taking over against Byakuya. Later uses Hollowfication against Grimmjow but cannot maintain it long enough to withstand him.
Final Getsuga Tenshō 91 Gains Zangetsu’s acceptance after recognizing its desire to protect him. Fuses with Tensa Zangetsu and receives the knowledge of Mugetsu.
Mugetsu used; Soul Reaper powers become dormant 92 93 Uses the final strike against Yoriichi’s Bankai. The resulting dormancy removes the suppression preventing his Fullbring from awakening.
Initial Fullbring 93 Awakens the Substitute Shinigami Badge’s soul during training against Jinta and Ururu, producing a black Reiatsu shield.
Second-stage Fullbring 94 Develops a close-fitting black outfit and short blade while fighting Jackie. Gains Spirit Light Step and practices efficient movement against Yukio’s virtual Hollows.
Complete Fullbring 94 Under Ginjo’s pressure, manifests white armor with black markings and a blade that can assume Zangetsu’s cleaver-like shape. Yoriichi judges its power no weaker than Ichigo’s original Bankai.
Residual Fullbring reactivated 97 98 99 After Ginjo steals his completed Fullbring, anger awakens its remnants. Can fight again, but remains substantially weaker than his complete state.
Soul Reaper powers restored; Fullbring fused with Bankai 100 101 Reawakens both powers through his own will while refusing Yoriichi’s intervention. Manifests a changed Tensa Zangetsu and decisively overpowers Ginjo.
Deeper Zanpakutō understanding begun 199 203 Trains against unformed Asauchi under Ōetsu Nimaiya. Begins to glimpse a deeper understanding of his Zanpakutō and elects to remain for further training; no new release is documented here.

Appearance

  • Everyday appearance: Orange hair, a frequently fierce expression, and a school uniform 2 13 93.
  • Initial Soul Reaper form: Loose black robes and a Zanpakutō so large that its blade is almost taller than Rukia 1 2.
  • Original Bankai: Tight black clothing and a comparatively ordinary-looking black longsword 28.
  • Mugetsu: Long black hair reaching his hips, bandages covering his mouth, nose, and upper body, and black Reiatsu patterns across his left side 92.
  • Complete Fullbring: Rigid white armor marked with black patterns across his limbs and chest 94.
  • Fullbring-fused Bankai: A white high-collared shirt beneath an open black coat with dark red lining, three white X-shaped chest straps, gloves, and a chain linking his left hand to the blade. Tensa Zangetsu gains a curved spine with three spikes and a sharpened manji-shaped guard 101.

Personality

Ichigo’s rough manner conceals a consistent concern for others. Before their supernatural battles, he regularly joined Yoriichi for lunch so that he would not have to eat alone. He also defends Yoriichi’s character when Rukia questions whether he can be trusted 2 4.

Protecting people matters more to him than winning or proving his strength. During Uryū’s Hollow contest, he abandons the score to reach his family and refuses to dodge a Gillian’s Cero because residential buildings stand behind him. He later restricts his attacks against Nozomi’s pursuers to avoid harming nearby residents 11 125.

Threats to loved ones make him impatient and easily provoked. Tsukishima exploits this attachment, while Urahara’s withheld information repeatedly angers him. Nevertheless, Ichigo is academically capable, earns good grades, and quickly understands Yoriichi’s breathing instruction once he applies himself 21 82 85.

His desire to protect others eventually develops into a demand for personal responsibility. Although he trusts Yoriichi to defeat Ginjo, he refuses that rescue because his own family and companions are involved. After overcoming Ginjo, he does not immediately deliver a killing blow, despite having earlier declared his intention to kill him 98 100 101.

Abilities & Skills

Spiritual Perception and Reiatsu

  • Can see souls before becoming a Soul Reaper and grows more sensitive to spiritual abnormalities afterward 1 7.
  • Initially compensates for poor sword technique with immense Reiatsu, severing the Fishbone Hollow’s arm and then bisecting its body 2.
  • Learns to regulate spiritual power through breathing, allowing it to flow with his body rather than surge uncontrollably 21.
  • His control deteriorates when the inner white personality becomes increasingly active; even the breathing method stops remaining effective for long 38.

Zangetsu and Getsuga Tenshō

  • Wields Zangetsu as his principal weapon and releases concentrated Reiatsu slashes through Getsuga Tenshō 17 18.
  • Receives direct swordsmanship training from Yoriichi, who corrects his stance, attacks, and concentration of Reiatsu along the blade 18.
  • Forces back a Gillian’s Cero and cracks its mask, but loses control of his overflowing Reiatsu in the process 11.
  • Continues using Getsuga Tenshō through residual Fullbring power after Ginjo’s theft 99.
  • Cannot reliably overcome coordinated captain-level attacks: the Byakuya and Hitsugaya Reigai crush his hastily released Getsuga Tenshō with their combined Bankai 127.

Tensa Zangetsu

  • Compresses a large amount of power into the sword and clothing, with speed identified as the original Bankai’s main improvement 28.
  • After fusion with Fullbring, provides substantially greater speed, strength, and Reiatsu than his earlier form 127.
  • In the fused state, breaks Ginjo’s Cross Guillotine and exhausts his remaining resistance 101.

Hollow Power and Hybrid Soul

  • Contains an inner white personality capable of forcibly taking control of his body. During the fight with Byakuya, it manifests a white mask and overwhelms his opponent 38.
  • Initially struggles to sustain deliberate Hollowfication, leaving him vulnerable to Grimmjow 46.
  • Later recognizes that Zangetsu’s interventions—including uncontrolled Hollowfication—were attempts to keep him alive 91.
  • His combined Soul Reaper, Hollow, Fullbring, and Quincy powers prevent Ebern’s medallion from properly analyzing and stealing his Bankai. This protection stems from his unusual composition, not a general immunity shared by other Soul Reapers 166 168.

Fullbring and Spirit Light Step

  • Uses his attachment to the Substitute Shinigami Badge to awaken the object’s soul 86 93.
  • Initially forms a defensive Reiatsu shield; subsequent stages produce clothing, armor, and a weapon 93 94.
  • Uses Spirit Light Step by drawing out the ground’s soul to increase the spring beneath his feet 94.
  • Improves power efficiency through repeated combat in Yukio’s virtual battlefield 94.
  • His original powers suppress Fullbring’s awakening until Mugetsu renders them dormant 90 93.

Final Getsuga Tenshō and Mugetsu

  • Enters his inner world through Bankai and Jinzen to obtain Zangetsu’s acceptance 91.
  • Merges completely with Zangetsu, becoming Getsuga rather than merely wielding it 91.
  • Releases Mugetsu as the final strike in his duel with Yoriichi 92.
  • Pays for its use with the loss of active Soul Reaper powers, which subsequently remain dormant until his confrontation with Ginjo 93 100 101.

Equipment & Items

  • Zangetsu / Tensa Zangetsu — His Zanpakutō and Bankai weapon; its appearance changes after Fullbring becomes integrated into his restored Soul Reaper power 17 91 101.
  • Substitute Shinigami Badge — Separates his soul from his body, detects nearby Hollows, and receives Soul Society communications. It also records and transmits Reiatsu information for surveillance 35 81 88.
  • Fullbring medium — The same badge carries his attachment to past battles, responsibilities, and companions. It becomes the anchor for his Fullbring and cracks when his powers reawaken against Ginjo 93 100.

Relationships

  • Yoriichi Tsugikuni — School friend, combat instructor, and frequent protector. Yoriichi is officially assigned to monitor him, but Ichigo continues to trust him personally and eventually asks him to respect his decision to fight Ginjo alone 2 16 35 100.
  • Rukia Kuchiki — Gives him his first Soul Reaper powers and guides his early work. Her arrest prompts his training and journey to Soul Society 1 4 14 16.
  • Orihime Inoue — Close companion who heals him after his battle with Kenpachi. Ichigo enters Hueco Mundo to rescue her after her abduction 26 48.
  • Yasutora Sado / Chad — Trusted friend and rescue companion. Tsukishima’s alteration of Chad’s past becomes one of Ichigo’s reasons for pursuing Fullbring 48 82 90.
  • Uryū Ishida — Begins as a Quincy challenger, then fights beside him against the Hollow outbreak. Later accompanies him to Hueco Mundo and remains unaffected during Tsukishima’s manipulation of their friends 10 11 48 82.
  • Isshin Kurosaki — Father and former Tenth Division captain. Teaches Ichigo the Final Getsuga Tenshō and reveals his connection to the Shiba Clan 50 90 183.
  • Yuzu and Karin Kurosaki — Younger sisters whose safety repeatedly drives his decisions. He accepts the loss of his Soul Reaper powers as a necessary risk to undo Tsukishima’s interference in their lives 2 11 90.
  • Kisuke Urahara — Organizes his power-restoration and Fullbring training. Ichigo relies on his expertise but frequently resents his secrecy 16 85 93.
  • Yoruichi Shihōin — Rescues him after the Kenpachi fight and directs his accelerated Bankai training 26 28.
  • Zangetsu — Zanpakutō spirit whose overriding wish is to protect Ichigo. Their reconciliation allows Ichigo to learn the Final Getsuga Tenshō 91.
  • Kūgo Ginjo — Fullbring instructor who cultivates and steals his power. Ichigo defeats him after independently restoring and combining his powers 94 97 101.
  • Shūkurō Tsukishima — Manipulates the pasts of Ichigo’s loved ones to pressure him into awakening Fullbring 82 85.
  • Nozomi Kujō — Fugitive whom Ichigo shelters and promises to protect, even when opposing multiple captain-level Reigai 121 125 127.
  • Nel — Seeks his help after Las Noches falls to invaders. Ichigo immediately commits to rescuing the captives 166 168.
  • Kūkaku Shiba — Older cousin through Isshin’s former position as a Shiba branch-family head 183.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Becoming a Substitute Soul Reaper

Ichigo receives Rukia’s powers during the Fishbone Hollow’s attack on the Kurosaki Clinic and destroys the Hollow before checking on his sisters. His new Reiatsu also triggers the return of Yoriichi’s previous-life memories 1 2.

His early duties draw him into the attacks involving Orihime’s brother and the boy’s soul trapped in Sado’s parrot. Uryū’s subsequent Hollow contest escalates into a town-wide emergency, during which Ichigo and Uryū put aside their rivalry to protect residents 6 7 10 11.

Rukia’s Arrest and Soul Society

Ichigo opposes Rukia’s arrest and begins Urahara’s intensive training to recover his own powers. After awakening Zangetsu, he continues training under Yoriichi before entering Soul Society with his companions 14 16 17 18.

His fight with Kenpachi leaves him near death. Orihime heals him at Yoruichi’s hidden training ground, where he subsequently achieves Bankai. Afterward, he receives the Substitute Badge and returns to the World of the Living under Yoriichi’s official monitoring 26 28 35.

Inner Hollow and Orihime’s Rescue

Following his return, Ichigo struggles with a voice urging him to surrender his body. Yoriichi warns him against facing the problem alone, and Shinji offers instruction in controlling Hollow power 38 39.

After Grimmjow exposes the limits of his Hollowfication and Orihime is abducted, Ichigo enters Hueco Mundo with Uryū and Chad. He entrusts the defense against Aizen to Yoriichi and returns only after Aizen has been sealed 46 48 59.

Fullbring and Xcution’s Betrayal

Tsukishima inserts himself into the pasts of Ichigo’s sisters, Orihime, and Chad, leaving them unwilling to accept Ichigo’s hostility toward him. Although Isshin initially appears affected as well, he later reveals that he was pretending in order to investigate the threat without endangering his daughters 82 90.

To awaken Fullbring, Ichigo learns and uses Mugetsu, temporarily sacrificing his Soul Reaper powers. He then develops his badge-based Fullbring through Urahara’s training and Xcution’s exercises, only for Ginjo to steal the completed power 90 91 92 93 94 97.

Ichigo refuses Yoriichi’s intervention, restores his own powers, and defeats Ginjo with a Fullbring-fused Bankai. After Ginjo and Tsukishima die, he returns home to his reunited family, with Karin’s memories restored 100 101 103.

Protecting Nozomi

Ichigo intervenes when masked Soul Reapers pursue Nozomi through a spatial rift. His promise to protect her brings him into battle with the Byakuya, Hitsugaya, and Gin Reigai, whose coordinated attacks leave him severely wounded 121 125 127.

After Kagerōza’s capture and sentencing, Nozomi survives and accompanies Ichigo back to the World of the Living to begin a new life 142.

Quincy Invasion and the Soul King Palace

Ebern’s failed attempt to steal Tensa Zangetsu exposes the threat posed by Quincy medallions. When Nel reports the fall of Las Noches and the capture of Starrk and Harribel, Ichigo heads to Hueco Mundo with Urahara and his companions 166 168 169.

Cang Du traps him inside a Sacred Jail Gate despite Grimmjow killing the Quincy. Later, Ichigo travels to the Soul King Palace, learns of his Shiba ancestry, and undertakes Nimaiya’s Asauchi training rather than returning early 170 183 199 203.

After Ichibē reveals that Yhwach has stolen the Soul King’s power and established Wahrwelt, Ichigo and Renji enter the hidden Rotating Passage to pursue him 218.
