Background
Yoriichi grew up in Karakura Town as an orphan taken in by adoptive parents. He was unusually quiet and frequently watched spirits invisible to ordinary people. His parents nevertheless gave him a normal home; both died in a car accident during his middle-school years, leaving him a house and sufficient savings to support himself 2.
Before recovering his memories, he could already perceive souls, Hollows, internal anatomy, and the movement of Reishi. He occasionally spoke to wandering souls but generally left Hollows alone unless they threatened others. In high school, he befriended Ichigo, Orihime, Chad, and Tatsuki; Ichigo regularly joined him when he ate lunch alone 1 2.
His identity encompasses three lives: an ordinary person who read Bleach, the boy raised in Karakura Town, and the swordsman Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Di Jun later explains that he fused the transmigrator's faint true spirit with the departed swordsman's soul to protect him from the world's pursuit. The inherited swordsmanship and demon-slaying memories are gifts of that soul, rather than merely knowledge of a fictional character 27 55 202.
Appearance
- Build and hair: Tall and straight-backed, with long black hair 128.
- Demon Slayer Mark: A flame-shaped mark on the left side of his forehead, initially mistaken for an ordinary birthmark 3 128.
- Clothing: Initially wears his school uniform; as Third Division Captain, wears a black Shihakushō beneath a white captain's haori marked with the character for “three” 27 35 128.
- Bankai transformation: His eyes become pure gold, with slit pupils described in the character profile and later wartime release. Flame markings spread across his face and onto his hands, while a radiant sun wheel appears behind him 54 55 56 172.
Personality
Yoriichi is quiet, composed, and blunt. He rarely volunteers explanations, answering Rukia's questions about his unusual abilities with “Born so.” His calm reassures his friends, although his directness can frustrate people accustomed to evasive conversation—particularly Urahara 10 36 47 80.
His central motivation is protecting people, not serving Soul Society's authority. He rejects Aizen's offers because he values his companions and refuses to abandon his principles. His concern also extends beyond named friends: the ordinary residents he remembers seeing around Karakura Town matter to him 50 52 72 214.
Despite enjoying demanding sword practice, he rejects killing for the pleasure of battle. He struggles to understand Zaraki's willingness to accept injuries for entertainment and refuses Unohana's invitation to embrace lethal combat for its own sake. He later intervenes to prevent her from sacrificing herself to restore Zaraki's strength 34 68 179.
He becomes more openly teasing after accepting his three lives. He needles Ichigo, insults Urahara's cryptic explanations, and calmly outlasts Yamamoto's attempt to make him speak first. His protectiveness also develops limits: when Ichigo insists on settling his own battle, Yoriichi sheathes his sword and respects that choice 55 80 85 100 105.
Abilities & Skills
Transparent World
An innate perception ability that reveals internal physical and spiritual structures. Shikai binds it more closely to Hekyō and expands its range 2 54.
- Combat prediction: Reads muscles, blood flow, and Reiatsu circulation to anticipate an opponent's movements 30 34.
- Spiritual analysis: Examines Zanpakuto cores, Kidō structures, soul weaknesses, and the Reishi arrangements underlying illusions 54.
- Ability diagnosis: Identifies the spatial layer redirecting attacks around Nianzol and the Reishi mechanism supporting Haschwalth's Balance 155 176.
- Investigation: Detects the foreign power blocking Ichigo's Substitute Badge and recognizes related spiritual power in Tsukishima's bookmark 81 83.
- Limit against Kyōka Suigetsu: It is not unconditional immunity. Yoriichi can detect inconsistencies in an illusion's internal anatomy and Reiatsu, forcing Aizen to reproduce extraordinarily detailed structures to deceive him. He had also never witnessed Kyōka Suigetsu's release when confronting Aizen in Karakura Town 52 54.
Swordsmanship
Yoriichi can understand a sword technique after seeing it once. Hekyō later restores the practical instincts accumulated through the original swordsman's lifetime of battle 2 27.
- Uses economical strikes aimed at weaknesses rather than unnecessary movement 24.
- Splits Ichigo's Crescent Moon Slash while teaching him Reiatsu control 18.
- Repeatedly draws with Yamamoto in wooden-sword matches conducted without Reiatsu and at ordinary human strength 106.
- Continues to outmaneuver Zaraki through superior technique as Zaraki's raw power increases in Muken 181.
- Defeats his Bankai-using Reigai counterpart through sword techniques and Kidō 141.
Hekyō and Sun Reiatsu
Hekyō is a soul-born weapon rather than a conventional Zanpakuto imprinted onto an Asauchi. It embodies Yoriichi's otherworldly soul essence and the original swordsman's Sun Breathing martial will. Its solar power originates in the Golden Crow inheritance associated with Heavenly Emperor Di Jun 54 55.
- Soul incineration: Burns spiritual bodies and damages the soul's essence 30 54.
- Persistent wounds: Leaves solar brands that resist healing. Exceptional regeneration, including the Hōgyoku's, can repair them, but more slowly than normal 54.
- Reiatsu replenishment: Breathing continuously draws in surrounding Reishi and converts it into Sun Reiatsu, giving his techniques very low expenditure and exceptional endurance 54 117.
- Hōgyoku suppression: His power damages the Hōgyoku and later suppresses its evolution strongly enough for Urahara's seal to bind Aizen 57 58.
- Naming resistance: Ichibē states that Ichimonji cannot erase the names or powers of Hekyō and Sun Reiatsu 195.
- Limitation: Raw solar power has no inherent advantage over purely rule-based abilities; Yoriichi relies on the Transparent World to analyze their workings 54.
Shikai: Hekyō
The released blade becomes blazing crimson, edged with golden-orange Reiatsu and marked by fine flame-like engravings. Contact alone can burn a spiritual body 54.
- Standard command: “Draw the breath of the sun, burn away all Hollow filth, Hekyō.”
- Short command: “Rise, sun, Hekyō.”
- Nature: Yoriichi distinguishes Hekyō from an ordinary fire-type weapon, describing it as “the sun itself” 30 54.
Sun Breathing Forms
The character profile supplies expanded names and effects for the twelve forms; shorter names also appear in combat 3 24 54.
| Form | Technique | Application |
|---|---|---|
| First | Dance · Sunline Split | A horizontal slash releasing a thin, concentrated crimson blade of Reiatsu for high-speed ranged attacks 54. |
| Second | Blue Heaven Ascension | An upward slash producing a spiraling flame blade; counters attacks from above and breaks Kidō restraints 54. |
| Third | Blazing Sun Scatter | A spinning strike that releases a ring-shaped shock wave to cut nearby enemies and escape encirclement 54. |
| Fourth | Illusory Sun Thrust | Concentrates Reiatsu at the sword tip to pierce a single weak point in an opponent's defenses 30 54 57. |
| Fifth | Aerial Limit, Hazy Glow | Combines repeated Shunpo with layered afterimages and dense, parallel slashes 54. |
| Sixth | Lightning Sunrise | Seven connected slashes that apply burning marks; fully accumulated marks ignite and disintegrate the spiritual body 52 54. |
| Seventh | Sunflower Thrust | A low rush tracing a fan of flaming Reiatsu along the ground to sweep groups of enemies 54. |
| Eighth | Flying Wheel Dawnlight | Throws the sword as a revolving light wheel that tracks hostile Reiatsu and explodes into fragments on impact 54. |
| Ninth | Flowing Clouds Scorch the Heavens | A broad diagonal slash producing a giant crescent blade for battlefield interception and demolition 54. |
| Tenth | Blazing Sunlight | Creates a circular Reiatsu shield capable of meeting powerful Kidō and Bankai attacks; burns an attacker in return 15 30 54. |
| Eleventh | Sun Halo Dragon: Head Dance | Releases a crimson Reiatsu dragon that tears into a target's soul until its energy is exhausted 54. |
| Twelfth | Flame Heaven: Severing Destruction | Shikai's strongest individual burst: a descending, pillar-like slash followed by a wide-area Reiatsu explosion 54. |
Bankai: Heavenly Illumination Sun Wheel
Bankai unites Yoriichi's soul, solar power, and swordsmanship with Hekyō. He first achieves it after accepting all three lives as himself inside Void Prison. The character profile distinguishes this awakening from full mastery, which it places during the Thousand-Year Blood War 54 55.
- Weapon: A crimson, gold-inlaid two-handed ōdachi with a three-legged Golden Crow guard 54 55.
- Self-sustaining origin: Its power no longer depends on external Reishi, overcoming the conditions that initially prevented his Shikai from functioning in Void Prison 55.
- Sunlit Pure Realm: A domain extending several dozen meters that suppresses Hollow, Arrancar, and Schrift Reishi; degrades regeneration and Fullbring constructs; and slows enemy Kidō incantations 54.
- Thirteenth-Form Perpetual Cycle: Links the sword forms into a seamless cycle, allowing techniques to activate by thought without preparatory stances 54.
- Yoriichi Soul Blade: Allows temporary fingertip blades of Sun Reiatsu even if Hekyō is sealed or knocked away 54.
| Finishing Technique | Effect / Limitation |
|---|---|
| Thirteenth Form: Scarlet Radiance Final Ring | Overlaps the twelve forms' trajectories into a compressed point, then releases a wide-area sun-wheel slash that strips away the target's soul in layers. Used against Aizen and Ichigo's Mugetsu 54 58 92. |
| Myriad-Calamity Crimson Wheel | Forms a gigantic overhead sun wheel that crashes down after a short delay 54. |
| Light-Tracing Reversal | Detonates Reiatsu upon blocking an attack, returning twice the impact and applying multiple solar soul wounds 54. |
| Heavenly Scorch of the Unconditioned | Overdraws all Reiatsu into a vast laser-like blade capable of tearing Garganta space. Ends Bankai and prevents another release for an extended period; described as an unused trump card 54. |
Bright Red Nichirin Sword
An additional enhancement activated by compressing Reiatsu into the blade during either Shikai or Bankai 54.
- Raises the blade's Reishi vibration and heat to a soul-burning threshold.
- Leaves persistent soul scars.
- Can damage a Quincy's Reishi Circuit while they are using Vollständig 54.
Demon Slayer Mark
The permanently active mark raises Yoriichi's regular combat power to five times his original baseline. Its amplification stacks with Shikai and Bankai 54.
- The markings visibly spread during Bankai 55 56 92.
- Its presence predates his conscious understanding of his inherited abilities 3.
Movement and Unarmed Combat
- Nisshun: His specialized Shunpo rivals Yoruichi's speed after Shunkō and leaves a burning Reiatsu trail that can obstruct pursuers 54.
- Aerial movement: Gathers Reishi beneath his feet to stand and walk in midair 12.
- Unarmed lethality: Bisects a Hollow with a blade-like sweep of his fingers, moving too quickly for Ichigo and Rukia to follow 8.
- Precision interception: Stops Aizen's blade and a Gin Reigai's Shinsō with two fingers 58 128.
Kidō and Reishi Control
Yoriichi uses the Transparent World to analyze spell composition and treats Kidō as support for his swordsmanship 40 54.
- Can cast Hadō and Bakudō without incantations 54.
- Adds solar burning properties to spells; the profile states that his Ittō Kasō doubles in power 54.
- Learns Counter-Kidō after observing or learning the relevant spell; his completed training allows him to counter every Kidō 40 54.
- Draws Reishi from the air, buildings, ground, and spatial layers across several kilometers during his fight with Nianzol 156.
- Stops surrounding Reishi from flowing to disable Haschwalth's Balance mechanism 176.
- Sustains the collapsing Three Realms with his power after the Soul King's death, leaving himself weakened 213.
Equipment
- Hekyō: An undecorated dark-gray uchigatana in its unreleased state, with a gray scabbard, circular guard, and small “sun” inscription. It can manifest from Reishi and dissolve back into his soul 2 3 54 100 112.
- Third Division captain's haori: The white haori worn over his Shihakushō after Yamamoto appoints him captain 35 128.
- Muken Key: Entrusted to Urahara so that he can release Aizen under controlled conditions 215.

Trivia
- The author explicitly modifies Sun Breathing's techniques and assigns them effects suited to this setting rather than reproducing their original versions unchanged 54.
- The character profile describes Yoriichi's central advantage as overwhelming attributes and Reiatsu quality comparable to the Soul King's, rather than an inherently rule-based power 54.
- Despite its shape and terminology, Hekyō is described as something that cannot strictly be called a conventional Zanpakuto; his soul's power took the form of a sword because that was what he wanted 54.
- His inner world initially appears as black water beneath an enormous sun; a later meditation depicts a crimson wasteland beneath the sun 27 41.
