Appearance

  • Build: Tall and slender, with a narrow waist and long, straight legs. At their early meeting, she is slightly taller than Lin Yang 60.
  • Clothing: Wears a close-fitting pale purple qipao 60.
  • Bearing: Has a languid, alluring manner. After consuming the Earth Dragon Golden Melon, the poisonous sweetness surrounding her diminishes and a faint draconic presence replaces it 70.
  • Martial Soul Possession: Gains a slender serpent tail, emerald-green scales covering her forearms and palms, and clawlike fingers. Her evolved form has claws but no horns 70.
  • Poison Dragon Transformation: Diamond-shaped scales spread from her palms to her neck; her hands become dragonlike claws with sharp, toxin-bearing dark-green nails 151.

Personality

Dugu Yan is confident, decisive, and unwilling to be treated as someone who merely needs protection. She insists on fighting a wounded three-thousand-year Gale Leopard herself, enduring broken scales and bleeding arms to land a lethal poison attack. The difficult victory nevertheless forces her to reassess her strength when she compares it with Lin Yang’s effortless opening punch 71.

Her ruthlessness can become a liability. Qin Ming reprimands her for nearly killing arena opponents, and she is willing to answer Yu Tianheng’s potentially serious attack with a dangerous point-blank Poison Breath. She does, however, accept Qin Ming’s criticism of her incomplete technique and considers seeking further instruction from Lin Yang 58 78 79.

She openly pursues Lin Yang and becomes competitive with other women close to him. Her exchanges with Xiao Wu frequently turn into insults or fights, but the rivalry does not prevent her from sincerely recognizing Xiao Wu’s exceptional talent 74 97 140 156.

Abilities & Skills

Jade Phosphorous Poison Jiao

Her evolved Martial Soul combines poisonous attacks with stronger close-combat capabilities and an increasingly powerful draconic presence 69 70 71.

  • Scaled defense: Her forearm scales can withstand attacks, although the Gale Leopard’s claws tear through several of them 71.
  • Claws and tail: Martial Soul Possession gives her clawlike hands and a serpentlike tail; she can launch her third Soul Skill from the tail 70 75.
  • Draconic suppression: After obtaining her Fifth Soul Ring, ordinary thousand-year Soul Beasts cannot stand their ground before her presence 151.
  • Development path: Lin Yang recommends poison-type lesser dragons or beasts with dragon bloodlines for future rings. Dugu Bo regards snake-to-dragon transformation—not poison alone—as her cultivation path 70 138.
  • Incomplete dragon evolution: The Glazed Pearl begins advancing this transformation, but a completed Poison Dragon Martial Soul is not established 204.

Jade Phosphorous Red Poison and Blue Poison

Her first two Soul Skills provide control and enhancement effects rather than serving as her main lethal attacks 71.

  • Together, they can eliminate pain and increase attack power and speed 71.
  • Jade Phosphorous Red Poison stimulates the nerves, increasing attack power and speed by 20% 187.
  • She uses her poisons to empower the Shi Brothers, Osler, and Yu Feng during the match against Di’ao Academy 187.
  • Their original configuration proves less effective in a life-or-death fight than in arena combat 71.

Martial Soul Origin Poison

A concentrated poisonous mist that she initially reserves as her final trump card. Its potency increases after her Martial Soul evolves 71.

  • Entering the Gale Leopard’s open wound, it blackens the blood and rapidly spreads decay through the surrounding flesh 71.
  • Kills the wounded three-thousand-year beast within roughly a dozen breaths 71.

Third Soul Skill: Jade Phosphor Corrosive Bone Poison

Obtained from the Bone-Eroding Viper Dragon, this skill switches between penetrating single-target attacks and area control 73 74.

  • Single target: Fires venomous spikes with strong penetration and toxicity 74.
  • Area attack: Trades penetration for a wider poison release, quickly creating a bone-corroding field to suppress or control enemies 74.
  • Demonstrated use: A crystal spike pierces Qin Ming’s Soul Power barrier before exploding into emerald poison mist; the mist also corrodes the barrier 75 76.
  • Limits: Although activated instantly, it consumes enough Soul Power that she can initially use it only a few times at full strength. Qin Ming burns away the mist with his flames 76.

Jiao Breathing

Dugu Bo develops Jiao Breathing specifically for her Martial Soul, using the Water Breathing method taught by Lin Yang as its foundation. Lin Yang teaches her the breathing method, not its sword forms 78.

  • Emphasizes precision, control, and endurance, reducing skill expenditure and recovery intervals while improving Soul Power recovery 78.
  • Initially remains short of the Constant State 78.
  • Early execution is imperfect; Qin Ming warns that insufficient proficiency could cause problems against a real opponent 79.
Technique Application
First Technique: Twin Jiao Poison Fangs Forms two streams of water wrapped in poison mist into attacking Poison Jiao 78.
Fourth Form: Scale Shadow, Bewildering Tracks Her style’s only movement technique at its introduction. Uses poison mist to obscure vision while she advances with swift, erratic movements 78.
Fifth Technique: Poison Breath Expels poison directly at a nearby opponent. During early training, this final move drains well over half her Soul Power 78 79.

Fifth Soul Skill: Poison Dragon Transformation

Obtained from the thirty-thousand-year Jade-Eyed Demon Poison Jiao, this transformation strengthens both her physical combat and poisonous attacks 150 151.

  • Increases all attributes by 100% 151.
  • Makes her toxins three times stronger 151.
  • Produces protective scales, poisonous claws, and a long Jiao tail, allowing her to fight effectively at close range as well as from a distance 151.

Equipment & Items

  • Fifty-thousand-year Right Leg Soul Bone: Taken from Tang Hao and allocated to her by Lin Yang. She absorbs it before the hunt for her Fifth Soul Ring; its specific ability is not given 149.
  • Dagger: Used to finish the Bone-Eroding Viper Dragon before absorbing its Soul Ring 73.
  • Dugu Family emblem: Presents it when identifying herself to Tang Hao and invoking her grandfather’s identity 144.
  • Poison-warding pill: Takes one before entering the Bone-Eroding Viper Dragon’s miasma-filled swamp 72.
  • Heaven Dou Grade badge: Marks her advancement into the academy’s highest student grade after reaching rank thirty 74 75.

History

Inherited Poison and Lin Yang’s Intervention

Dugu Yan receives instruction from Dugu Bo from childhood. Despite her familiarity with the family’s Jade Phosphorous Serpent Martial Soul, its toxins begin exceeding her capacity to control them. Lin Yang identifies the uncontrolled poison as a sign that it is corroding her body, with further cultivation threatening to worsen the condition 64.

After meeting Lin Yang at the Great Soul Arena, she asks him to remove his mask and discovers that the rank-thirty-two Soul Elder is not yet ten years old. She reports him to her grandfather, prompting Dugu Bo to visit Heaven Dou Royal Academy and offer to take him as a disciple 60 61.

Lin Yang’s diagnosis leads Dugu Bo to investigate treatment. Dugu Yan has no Soul Bone at the time, while Dugu Bo tests a method of directing poison into his own Soul Bone. The Earth Dragon Golden Melon subsequently changes her Martial Soul, and Dugu Bo regards the longstanding danger to her as resolved 65 69.

Sunset Forest Soul Hunt

Dugu Bo entrusts Lin Yang with finding her Third Soul Ring, claiming that he must enter seclusion while secretly following them. Eager to test her evolved Martial Soul, Dugu Yan accompanies Lin Yang into Sunset Forest 70.

The Gale Leopard encounter exposes the difference between her new strength and Lin Yang’s combat ability. She then selects the Bone-Eroding Viper Dragon for its compatibility with her Martial Soul’s development. While she absorbs its ring, Lin Yang kills a ten-thousand-year Cave Demon Spider before it can reach her 71 72 73.

Learning who actually saved her overturns her brief satisfaction at matching Lin Yang’s Soul Power level. After returning, she becomes a frequent visitor to the Butterfly Mansion and joins him in the academy’s Heaven Dou Grade classes 74.

Academy Training and Tournament Career

Under Qin Ming, Dugu Yan tests her evolved poison against his defenses and develops her practical combat skills. Lin Yang’s breathing instruction and Dugu Bo’s adaptation give her a fighting style tailored to her Martial Soul 75 76 78 79.

The academy initially holds her, Lin Yang, and Xiao Wu back from one tournament to preserve them for the next. She watches Lin Yang’s final from the stands 104 109.

In the later tournament campaign, she fights attackers during the convoy ambush. Against Star Luo, she and Xiao Wu quickly incapacitate the opposing team’s strongest fighters, helping Heaven Dou win in under half a minute. Against Di’ao, she supports the other four combatants with her enhancement poisons 181 187.

Fifth Ring and Further Development

After reaching the level-fifty threshold, Dugu Yan travels with Lin Yang and Xiao Wu toward the Star Dou Great Forest. Their visit to Shrek brings them into conflict with Tang Hao. She identifies herself as Dugu Bo’s granddaughter, making Tang Hao reconsider his original intention to leave no survivors; Xiao Wu later teleports her clear of the battle’s shock wave 139 144.

Following Tang Hao’s defeat, she receives a Right Leg Soul Bone and obtains her Fifth Soul Ring with Dugu Bo and Lin Yang’s assistance 149 150 151.

She later participates in the Glazed Pearl medicinal bath. When Lin Yang announces that he intends to spend one or two years in Slaughter City, she offers to accompany him, but he refuses to take the women with him 204.

Relationships

  • Dugu Bo — Grandfather and childhood instructor. Her safety is his foremost concern; he secretly guards her Soul Hunt and creates Jiao Breathing for her. Lin Yang’s repeated protection of Dugu Yan helps turn Dugu Bo into his committed guardian 64 70 73 78.
  • Lin Yang — Benefactor, breathing instructor, teammate, and romantic partner. She pursues him openly, kisses his cheek after fighting Xiao Wu, and later begins an intimate relationship with him. She also urges him to take Dugu Bo along when preparing for a dangerous Soul Beast hunt 74 97 120 156 157.
  • Xiao Wu — Teammate and romantic rival. They trade “stinking snake” and rabbit-themed insults and fight to a stalemate over Lin Yang. Despite their antagonism, Dugu Yan respects her talent, and Xiao Wu protects her during the clash with Tang Hao 97 140 144.
  • Ye Lingling — Teammate and fellow romantic partner of Lin Yang. Dugu Yan reacts competitively when Ye Lingling becomes his lover first, but their subsequent interactions include familiar teasing 156 157.
  • Yu Tianheng — Former teammate and suitor. His approach is tied to his clan’s desire to recruit Dugu Bo. Her rapid improvement and growing closeness to Lin Yang undermine his confidence; he eventually leaves Heaven Dou Royal Academy 67 75 78 104.
  • Qin Ming — Academy teacher and combat coach. Corrects her excessive force, assesses her evolved abilities, and emphasizes proficiency over merely possessing powerful techniques 58 75 79.
