Background / History
Early life and Nuoding Academy
Tang San grew up believing that his father, Tang Hao, was merely a dispirited blacksmith from Holy Soul Village. After awakening his Martial Souls, he practiced the Disorder Splitting Wind Hammer under his father's instruction, forging daily and developing strength far beyond that of ordinary children 17 18 171.
Upon enrolling at Nuoding Academy as a work-study student, he formally became Yu Xiaogang's disciple. Yu Xiaogang praised his Innate Full Soul Power and Twin Martial Souls, setting Rank 99 Titled Douluo as his eventual goal. Tang San also accepted his teacher's unfavorable account of Lin Yang and immediately became hostile toward him 17.
After defeating Wang Sheng in Dorm Seven, Tang San challenged Lin Yang for leadership of the dormitory. He demanded that Lin Yang apologize to Yu Xiaogang if defeated and secured an agreement that Lin Yang would not use his Martial Soul. Despite employing several Tang Sect techniques, Tang San lost decisively 17 18.
Tang San then fired a Sleeve Arrow at Lin Yang's back. The attack alarmed his classmates, who wanted the incident reported to the academy. Yu Xiaogang intervened, and Tang San was moved from Dorm Seven to a room beside his teacher's because the other students no longer trusted him 19.
Yu Xiaogang subsequently attributed the defeat to Tang San's lack of information and Lin Yang's superior cultivation rather than focusing on the sneak attack. After obtaining his first Soul Ring from a Mandala Snake, Tang San immediately sought a rematch. Lin Yang refused, reminding him of the attack and his unfulfilled promise to apologize to Wang Sheng 20 21.
Shrek Academy and the Clear Sky inheritance
Six years after their previous meeting, Tang San encountered Lin Yang at Shrek Academy and again demanded a fight. He had reached level thirty-two and believed his Twin Martial Souls, Tang Sect techniques, and hidden weapons gave him grounds for confidence. Lin Yang revealed a level of fifty-five and defeated him with a single sword technique, leaving him covered in wounds 142 143.
The defeat shattered Tang San's confidence in Blue Silver Grass. He attempted to abandon it in favor of his second Martial Soul, prompting Yu Xiaogang to reveal that it was the Clear Sky Hammer and that Tang Hao was the renowned Clear Sky Douluo. Yu Xiaogang eventually agreed to the change in cultivation, but insisted that Tang San first become capable of absorbing a ten-thousand-year Soul Ring 171.
At Blue Tyrant Academy, Tang San inadvertently exposed his Clear Sky Hammer and attracted the Strength Clan. Its chief, Tai Tan, recognized him as his master's son and treated him as Young Master. Learning more about Tang Hao and the Clear Sky Sect restored Tang San's confidence and encouraged a sense of superiority toward Lin Yang 171.
Martial Soul tournament
Against Elephant Armor Academy, Tang San's Blue Silver Grass failed to restrain the opposing team. His attempt to defeat Huyan Li through a coordinated attack also failed when Huyan Li revealed a defensive Soul Bone. Tang San then brought out the Clear Sky Hammer and its ten-thousand-year Soul Ring, overpowering the opposition at the cost of severe exhaustion 175 176.
The public revelation exposed both his Twin Martial Souls and Clear Sky lineage. Yu Xiaogang reprimanded him for revealing the hammer merely to avoid losing a match. Tang San defended his decision by pointing to Blue Silver Grass's limitations, but ultimately promised not to abandon the Martial Soul inherited from his mother 176.
The attention surrounding his identity forced him to restrict his movements and remain under protection. Meanwhile, the physical burden of cultivating two Martial Souls made high-quality Soul Bones increasingly important to his future. The tournament's championship reward became a major incentive for continuing the competition 177 184.
Ambush on the road to Spirit City
During an assassination attempt, Tai Tan protected Tang San from two Soul Saints while the Shrek Seven Devils fought the remaining attackers. Tang San initially conserved Soul Power by using Blue Silver Grass, then coordinated a volley from seven Godly Zhuge Crossbows. Their effectiveness briefly restored his confidence in Tang Sect hidden weapons 182.
The fallen death warriors subsequently rose again with rapidly healing wounds and increased strength. Poisoned bolts and even devastating Clear Sky Hammer strikes failed to stop them. After discovering a scratch on his arm, Tang San cut away the affected flesh rather than risk an unknown consequence 182 183.
Afterward, Ning Fengzhi identified Spirit Hall as the force behind the ambush and offered Tang San refuge with the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect. Tang San refused to abandon his teammates or the championship's Soul Bones. He also rejected Ning Fengzhi's attempt to mediate his feud with Lin Yang, privately treating victory over his former classmate as essential to reclaiming his dignity 184.
Tournament defeat and uncertainty
Tang San struggled to accept Lin Yang's increasingly overwhelming strength. He steadied himself by focusing on his own Twin Martial Souls and the future potential of a Clear Sky Hammer equipped with high-age Soul Rings 191.
In Shrek's confrontation with Heaven Dou, Tang San acted as the focal point of a Seven-in-One Fusion Skill and manifested Clear Sky True Body. Xiao Wu blocked his all-out hammer strike, then kicked him away after he dissolved the fusion. With their Soul Power depleted, Shrek could not mount meaningful resistance 196.
After the tournament, Tang San was uncertain whether to remain at the academy or travel. Ning Fengzhi again offered shelter and help contacting the Clear Sky Sect, but Tang San chose to wait for Tang Hao and follow his father's arrangements. He did not know that Lin Yang had already killed Tang Hao 148 197 215.
Appearance
- Childhood: Simply dressed and skinny despite his considerable physical strength 17 18.
- At Shrek Academy: Described as plain-looking 142.
- Technique-related feature: His eyes develop a purple glow when he uses Purple Demon Eye 18 19.
Personality
Tang San is intensely loyal to Yu Xiaogang, regarding a teacher as a father for life. This loyalty also makes him quick to adopt his teacher's grudges: he initially judges Lin Yang as a bad person solely because Yu Xiaogang claims to have been disrespected 17 18.
He is proud, competitive, and deeply sensitive to defeat. His losses to Lin Yang become a lasting humiliation that drives both his training and his decision to cultivate the Clear Sky Hammer. Rather than reconsider the feud, he repeatedly explains the gap through Soul Rings, Martial Soul matchups, or Lin Yang's advantages 20 171 184.
His ruthlessness contrasts with his classmates' expectations. After losing at Nuoding Academy, he invokes the Tang Sect's rule against showing mercy to an enemy and attacks Lin Yang from behind. His classmates consequently fear sharing a dormitory with him 19.
Tang San nevertheless demonstrates tactical restraint when his judgment is not overwhelmed by resentment. He conserves Soul Power during prolonged combat, declines to gamble on an unreliable Martial Soul Fusion Skill, and rejects adding more mediocre-age rings to the Clear Sky Hammer merely for an immediate increase in cultivation 175 182 184.
Learning his father's identity gives him considerable pride in his lineage. Tai Tan's deference reinforces that confidence, while Lin Yang's continued progress provokes jealousy. Although the narration describes him as possessing an adult's mentality, his composure repeatedly falters when his strongest methods prove ineffective 171 191 196.
Abilities & Skills
Twin Martial Souls
Tang San possesses Blue Silver Grass and the Clear Sky Hammer, alongside Innate Full Soul Power 17 171.
- Cultivating both Martial Souls offers additional Soul Rings and skills, but places an increasing burden on his body.
- He limits the Clear Sky Hammer to one Soul Ring partly because he fears becoming unable to withstand further additions.
- Yu Xiaogang identifies high-quality Soul Bones as a way to improve his physical tolerance, not a complete solution to the underlying problem 177.
Blue Silver Grass
His original control-oriented Martial Soul provides restraint and battlefield support 142 175 182.
- Entanglement: Produces vines to bind enemies; his first-ring attack against Lin Yang is named Mother's Entanglement 143.
- Toxins: Its vines carry toxins, though these prove ineffective against Elephant Armor Academy's defenses 175.
- Team positioning: Uses vines to launch allies toward a target and withdraw them after an unsuccessful attack 175.
- Efficiency: Consumes less Soul Power than the Clear Sky Hammer, making it useful in prolonged combat 182.
- Limits: Lin Yang's Sharp Gold power shreds its vines, while the Elephant Armor disciples break through them without slowing 143 175.
Clear Sky Hammer
Tang San's second Martial Soul becomes his preferred offensive weapon after repeated disappointments with Blue Silver Grass 171 176.
- Its first attached Soul Ring is ten thousand years old 175 176.
- With that single ring, he overwhelms the Elephant Armor Academy team 176.
- Its tremendous weight and consumption exhaust him; after the match, he nearly faints 176.
- Disorder/Chaotic Splitting Wind Hammer Technique: Practices the technique through forging in childhood and later uses it in tournament combat 17 187.
- Clear Sky True Body: Manifests a massively enlarged hammer through Shrek's Seven-in-One Fusion Skill. This is a team-assisted display, not evidence that he has personally reached the Martial Soul Avatar realm 196.
Mysterious Heaven Skill
A Tang Sect cultivation technique that supplies internal power 3 18.
- Reinforces his strength and allows him to concentrate internal power in his arms to defend against impact.
- Has not broken through its first level during his initial duel with Lin Yang.
- Does not compensate for Lin Yang's superior physical strength in that encounter 18.
Purple Demon Eye
An eye technique that sharpens his perception of an opponent's movements 18.
- Makes Lin Yang's movements appear slower and their trajectories clearer.
- Helps him identify openings and anticipate attacks.
- Cannot overcome the difference between perceiving an attack and being physically fast enough to respond 18.
Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track
An evasive footwork technique built around deceptive, agile movement 18.
- Enables rapid changes of position and close-range feints.
- Particularly effective within confined spaces rather than for long-distance travel.
- Can still be countered by superior speed and accurate prediction 18.
- Helps him narrowly evade the mutated death warriors during the road ambush 183.
Hidden Weapons, Poisons, and Tang Sect Secret Arts
Tang San carries extensive Tang Sect knowledge, including Mysterious Jade Hand and Hundred Solutions to Hidden Weapons 3 182.
- Hidden-weapon attacks: Deploys concealed mechanical weapons and scatters numerous specially prepared projectiles over a wide area 19 182.
- Poison use: Coats Godly Zhuge Crossbow bolts with poison expected to kill an ordinary person within three breaths 183.
- Mysterious Jade Hand: Uses the technique during the road ambush; his hand also displays a jade-colored luster during his childhood duel 18 182.
- Combat effectiveness: His hidden weapons have troubled Zhao Wuji, a Soul Saint, and wound the Soul Kings attacking Shrek's group 142 182.
- Limits: The crossbows do not critically endanger those Soul Kings, and the mutated death warriors survive both poisoned bolts and other hidden weapons 182 183.
- Specialized knowledge: Possesses knowledge related to immortal herbs 3.

- Ning Fengzhi — Offers protection, refuge, and help contacting the Clear Sky Sect. Also unsuccessfully encourages him to settle his feud with Lin Yang 184 197.
- Xiao Wu — Hostile toward Tang San during his Shrek rematch with Lin Yang; later blocks his Clear Sky True Body strike and defeats him in the tournament 142 196.
- Spirit Hall — Enemy organization behind the road ambush. Ning Fengzhi attributes its hostility to both Tang Hao's past feud and the threat posed by Tang San's potential 184.
