Liu Mingsheng stared blankly at the confession.
"If I confess, what sentence will I get?"
The Cleaner answered without hesitation.
"For what you've done, there's no escaping the death penalty!"
Hearing it was the death penalty, Liu Mingsheng actually breathed a sigh of relief.
"Hold on. Let me ask you something!"
The Cleaner took a pair of sunglasses from his pocket and put them on.
"Do you want to live?"
Those words seemed to question his very soul.
For a moment, some life returned to Liu Mingsheng's eyes.
He nodded frantically, his voice trembling slightly.
"Of course I want to live! What do you want? Money?"
The Cleaner in sunglasses wagged a finger.
"I'll take you somewhere. As long as you can stay there for thirty days, you'll be free!"
Liu Mingsheng agreed without hesitation.
"As long as I can live! Never mind thirty days, even thirty years would be fine!"
The Cleaner chuckled.
"It won't take thirty years! If you agree, let's sign an agreement!"
As he spoke, he took out another document.
Several large words were written at the top.
[Volunteer Recruitment]
"Sign this agreement, and you can become an honored volunteer!"
The Cleaner looked at Liu Mingsheng with a smile.
Without hesitation, Liu Mingsheng pressed his handprint at the bottom.
"When one door closes, another opens!"
He could not help saying it.
He had already prepared himself for death, but the moment he heard he could live, his brain stopped working.
He completely forgot the Magic Mirror's characteristic.
The outcome could not be changed.
The Cleaner nodded, then clapped his hands.
Behind him, a Cleaner in a sanitation worker's uniform walked over with a yellow vest.
"Put it on!"
Inside the Containment Facility.
The Magic Mirror had already been contained.
The Doctor was leading a team in studying it.
Lu Xiao was watching from the side as well.
He was still rather curious about the Magic Mirror, and he had questions he wanted to ask it.
The Doctor adjusted his monocle.
"What should we call you?"
He addressed the Magic Mirror.
A human face appeared on the mirror's surface.
"You can call me the Magic Mirror, or the Omniscient Mirror!"
The Doctor nodded and recorded both names.
"What is the price of asking you a question?"
The face on the mirror opened its mouth in a terrifying grin.
"That counts as asking me a question too!"
"But I can give you the answer to that one as a free gift!"
There was no discernible expression on the Doctor's face.
The Omniscient Mirror answered.
"The price of a question depends on its answer!"
"If the answer to that question would have a great impact on the world, then the corresponding price will also be great enough to have a great impact on the world!"
The Doctor adjusted his monocle.
"In other words, it requires an equivalent exchange, correct?"
The Omniscient Mirror answered.
"Exactly. You're much smarter than that idiot!"
"All that idiot did was ask stupid questions and try to fob me off with filthy flesh and blood!"
The idiot it referred to was none other than Liu Mingsheng.
The Doctor nodded, the gleam in his eye showing through his monocle.
"As it happens, I have a question!"
"How can humanity break through its current level of technology?"
The face on the Omniscient Mirror opened its mouth in a grin.
"The price of that answer is beyond what you humans can afford!"
The Doctor was not surprised by this answer at all. He adjusted his monocle.
"Can you tell me what the price is?"
The face pondered for a moment before speaking.
"That counts as a second question. You'll need to pay an appropriate price!"
"Of course! The price won't be too high!"
The Doctor nodded without speaking.
The face continued.
"Sacrifice a brain rich in knowledge, and you can have the answer to that question!"
While Lu Xiao was still wondering what counted as a brain rich in knowledge.
The Doctor had already pushed the assistant beside him toward the Omniscient Mirror.
Amid the assistant's terrified screams, the face emerged from the mirror.
His mouth opened impossibly wide, and he bit the assistant's head off in one bite.
The other staff members could not help shuddering at the sight.
"Mmm! A fine brain!"
The Doctor adjusted his monocle.
"Then what is the answer?"
The face smacked its lips.
"To obtain the answer to achieving a technological breakthrough, you must sacrifice a god!"
The Doctor's eyes lit up at those words.
"Sacrifice a god? Will any god do?"
The face gave a contemptuous smile.
"Of course not!"
At the answer, a rare look of regret appeared on the Doctor's face.
He felt regret because there happened to be a god inside the Containment Facility.
Sequence 09 - Corrupted Creator!
At that moment, the face began to entice him.
"Want to know which god you need to sacrifice? Of course, that counts as another question!"
"But I can give you a huge discount on the answer!"
"You only need to sacrifice one million lives to me!"
"How about it? I've already given you ninety percent off!"
At those words, even Lu Xiao's face twitched involuntarily.
But the Omniscient Mirror's words were like a demon's murmur.
They lingered in the Doctor's ears, tempting him every moment.
The Doctor adjusted his monocle.
"When the opportunity arises, I'll ask you that question!"
Clearly, the Doctor had still managed to resist the temptation through sheer willpower.
The staff members now looked at the Doctor with fear in their eyes.
When the Doctor had pushed that assistant toward the Omniscient Mirror, they had not seen the slightest hesitation in him.
As though he knew what they were thinking, the Doctor turned back and glanced at them.
"The results of the investigation into Liuguang's Ghost-Faced Moth infestation are out!"
His voice held no emotion, as though he were discussing something trivial.
"Among Liuguang's movements over the past month, he had physical contact with Liuguang!"
The "he" the Doctor referred to was the assistant who had been pushed toward the Omniscient Mirror.
But judging by the staff members' expressions, they clearly did not quite believe him.
"Doctor! Even if there were grounds for suspicion, shouldn't you have initiated an investigation?"
One staff member summoned the courage to challenge him.
The Doctor adjusted his monocle but did not answer that person.
Just then, the Omniscient Mirror spoke.
"Well? Do you need to ask me for the answer to that question?"
The Doctor replied calmly.
"No!"
The face spoke with a hint of regret.
"What a shame!"
"Then, sir, do you have any other questions you'd like to ask?"
The face wore an amused smile.
The Doctor thought for a moment, then looked at Lu Xiao.
"292, is there anything you want to ask?"
