Background / History
Doctor belongs to a succession of artificially created individuals. Shadow explains that Lu Xi grows a new body roughly every fifty years, timed to reach adulthood when the Doctor working outside approaches the end of his life. Each replacement is sent out and educated to become a containment-facility leader. The Director had been selected to mentor the next replacement, although Lu Xiao’s arrival disrupted these arrangements 221.
Doctor Li designed the prototype from which Doctor originated. Shadow confirms that every Doctor receives a Thought Imprint of devotion to humanity, intended to prevent his exceptional intelligence and personality from becoming a threat to civilization. Doctor eventually deduces his artificial origins independently while living in his Dreamscape 294 297.
The current Doctor studied under Warden, who taught him the Warden Regulations and promoted him to C03’s leadership. Warden originally intended him to succeed him at C01, but Doctor’s deteriorating condition later led Warden to train Jailer instead 40 69 287 1078.
Appearance
- Usual presentation: A white lab coat and monocle are his most consistent identifying features. He carefully polishes the monocle before formal meetings and habitually reaches to adjust it even in virtual settings where it is absent 14 31 40.
- Palm eye: Has a bloodshot eye in the center of his palm. At one point, he places his monocle over it before crushing the lens in his hand 70 89 146.
- Forehead eye: His altered appearance includes a scarlet vertical eye on his forehead. During his unstable period, it radiates an evil aura while his facial muscles visibly writhe 176 210.
- Changing bodies: Returns to the Present World in a body with three legs, surprising even Warden 935.
- Later human-form appearance: Appears before the Hidden Beings as a somewhat short man, neither tall nor burly, wearing a gold-rimmed monocle and white lab coat 1191.
Personality
Doctor is usually calm, analytical, and difficult to unsettle. He can maintain an even tone while negotiating with hostile administrators, conducting dangerous experiments, or confronting vastly more powerful beings. That composure does not prevent a sharp temper: early in Lu Xiao’s containment, he abruptly curses at a staff member over a proposed ability entry 5 31 1191.
His defining obsession is finding a technological path for humanity’s survival. He accepts professional ruin, physical mutation, and madness as possible costs, refusing to abandon his research even when Warden offers him a future leading C01. He also refuses to shift all responsibility for his actions onto a Sacrificial One 69 70.
His pragmatism can be callous. He values abilities that can be mass-produced, threatens to eliminate Driver before discovering his usefulness, and initially considers concealing Cage’s side effects. Nevertheless, he decides that humanity must choose its own fate and later promises to protect Nini from research 38 100 609 697.
Doctor recognizes limits in his own judgment. He explicitly allows that both his theories and Doctor Li’s may be wrong, and admits that he does not understand art 609 978.
Abilities & Skills
Scientific Research and Anomaly Analysis
- Investigates anomalous properties through controlled testing, tissue analysis, operational records, and mathematical models 5 20 41 1393.
- Identifies Lu Xiao’s blood as more damaging to anomalies than his flesh and proposes culturing hematopoietic stem cells for a renewable supply 20.
- Infers that the Gate may be failing by comparing Lu Xiao’s account with ten years of increasing anomalous incidents 41.
- Proposes flesh machinery and sequence god-making as emergency routes through humanity’s technological limitations 146.
- Uses system-assisted modeling to identify the cause of Zhang Chu’s memory problems and directs him to Prison Doctor for treatment 299.
Dreamscape Creation
- Controls the environment of his own Dreamscape, including its materials, energy, and rate of time flow 294 295.
- Creates wormhole-like passages by folding a plane and opening a connection between corresponding points 294.
- Reconstructs scenes from another person’s descriptions to investigate past events. Unlike Black Cat’s dream-weaving, these reconstructions depend on the information supplied to him 297.
- Experiments with transferring emotions to identical copies. Even a greatly reduced share eventually drives a recipient mad, demonstrating that duplication alone does not solve his emotional burden 295.
Digital Consciousness and Parallel Processing
- Maintains backups and replaceable bodies so research can continue after a body becomes unusable 502.
- Distributes work among thousands of doubles, allowing projects in different scientific fields to advance simultaneously 932 1012.
- Uses his Main Consciousness Entity as a supercomputer, allocating only a small fraction of its processing capacity to routine government administration 1079.
- Generates false surveillance footage through the system, controlling what hostile observers believe they are seeing 976.
- Fights another digital lifeform through competing data floods, analyzing incoming information for concealed viral code 1146.
Spatial Technology
- Uses a Beast-Skin Bag as the starting point for his research into space 1072.
- Proposes combining independent cargo spaces into a larger storage space accessed through a Teleportation Gate 935.
- Identifies the missing warp bubble in Qi Shangqing’s Curvature Engine research, explaining its necessity for protecting living occupants from changing space 935.
- Opens passages into subspace. His search there requires oxygen equipment, while Cage allows him to extend his consciousness through the lightless environment 1052.
Biological Engineering
- Collaborates with Shuns on clones of himself, Shuns, and Doctor Li 611.
- Oversees a factory producing his doubles and a new body for Daimon 1129.
- Screens a gene bank and constructs a gene chain compatible with Spiritwood’s consciousness. Human genes prove unsuitable, so the resulting design uses a humanoid life-form instead 1355.
- Calculates that Spiritwood’s printed body could retain strength at the level of the Gods, but would cost as much as an entire Star System 1355.
Strategy and Negotiation
- Uses containment regulations, formal proceedings, and compensation claims to protect C03’s interests 31 40 41.
- Bargains for assistance from anomalies that the facility cannot reliably restrain, including securing a future service from Prison Doctor in exchange for access to 09 86.
- Develops military models that estimate arrival times, survival windows, and the Swarm’s growth from consuming enemy forces 1531.
- Studies authorities, rules, and assimilation, while distinguishing hypotheses from established facts 609 708.
Limitations
- His control over his Dreamscape does not establish equivalent power in the Present World. Shuns interprets his dream-world creation as a transformation toward a “Creator,” but Doctor later points out that possessing Creation Authority has not visibly raised his level of existence 290 473.
- Some doubles are only as physically durable as ordinary humans. One suffocates after entering subspace without accounting for its lack of air 1052.
- His earlier use of 012, 013, and 306 leaves him in a fragile balance that can collapse if disturbed 210.
- Digital warfare can push his computing core to full load, and hostile information must be checked even when it appears useless 1146.
