History

Watching over Gary

Krysalis originally watched the north through skinchanging. When the Three-Eyed Crow lost the ability to see Gary with Greensight, she traveled to Winterfell in a raven’s body to investigate. She agreed to remain nearby, and Gary welcomed the prospect of learning magic from her 21.

Her first teaching attempt encountered an immediate obstacle: Gary’s powerful mana prevented her from entering his dreams. She nevertheless explained the basic process of skinchanging. After discovering his White Walker ice magic, she initially promised secrecy and warned him against using magic before recovering from his injuries 22 29.

Abandoning her original body

After spending three days continuously channeling mana, Krysalis returned to her body and told Leaf that Gary remained human despite wielding White Walker magic. Fearing that the Greenseer would target him, she proposed permanently transferring her consciousness into another creature. She hoped that a dragon’s lifespan would allow her to protect Gary throughout his life 30.

Leaf agreed to help conceal their actions. Together they retrieved a white egg that had remained in the cave for over a century. Krysalis poured mana into it despite its apparent lifelessness 30 31.

She subsequently hatched as a white dragon. Unable to communicate normally, she wrote instructions asking Leaf to place her in fire. After absorbing energy from the burning cabin, she departed to find Gary, warning Leaf that the Greenseer had selfish motives 34.

Krysalis reunited with Gary during his confrontation with Wind Spirit. She intercepted a venomous snake before it could bite him and drove the Shadowcat back with dragonfire. She explained that she had taken the dragon’s body to protect Gary, whom she believed carried a god’s power 39.

Highgarden, Pentos, and Valyria

Krysalis trained a Shadowcat to recognize Gary’s scent and protect him. At his request, she later transferred its loyalty to Margaery. She then secretly remained near Highgarden, where Margaery supplied meat to help her grow 58 62 73.

Upon reuniting with Gary, Krysalis received life-force energy that extended her lifespan. She supported his assault on Pentos by setting merchant ships in the harbor ablaze, drawing the city’s defenders away from his other targets 73.

She later carried Gary into the Valyrian ruins, where he recovered thirty-seven dragon eggs. Her precision fire magic made it possible for them to attempt forging new Valyrian steel; after months of practice and experimentation, they succeeded 83 88 91.

Guardian of the Dragon Cave

After Gary regained Pentos, Krysalis remained at its Dragon Cave with the other dragons and hatchlings. Gary later specifically ordered her to stay behind and watch over the wingless dragons while Rhaegal and Viserion traveled north 96 169.

When eventually summoned to King’s Landing, she checked whether Tysha could manage Pentos without her and advised using the Dragon Cavalry against the Dothraki if necessary. Her arrival at the Red Keep later helped break the Gold Cloaks’ resistance and secure their surrender 261 291.

Campaigns in the Reach

Krysalis fought alongside Teresa against the Ironborn. Cannon fire wounded her, but she retaliated by burning their longships and returned to Highgarden with the victors 316.

During House Tyrell’s withdrawal, she guarded the convoy’s money and grain. When an injured Teresa asked to be taken back to King’s Landing, Krysalis refused to abandon those supplies 331.

Godhood and the battle against Aolixilade

During the crisis at Winterfell, Krysalis struggled against another consciousness for control of her dragon body. She managed to break free long enough to attack Aolixilade and the Night’s King, but later lay unconscious while the internal struggle continued 353 358.

Gary returned and granted her the office of god of Dragons, reshaping her body and enabling her to appear as a winged woman. At Winterfell’s gates, she identified herself to Daenerys and explained that Gary had made her a god 358.

Krysalis then joined Teresa and Melisandre in the Lands of Always Winter. She restored the dragons’ sealed memories and sent them south before fighting Aolixilade for seven days and nights. After destroying Aolixilade’s dragon body, she absorbed the escaping soul and fell into deep sleep 362.

She later resumed operations with Teresa and Melisandre. On learning of Margaery’s abduction, the three suspended their purge and returned to Westeros, joining Gary and forty-one dragons for the confrontation at the Arbor 379.

Appearance

  • Dragon form: Entirely snow-white, with slit-pupiled eyes, wings bearing hooked claws, powerful hind legs, and sharp teeth 39 79 88 113.
  • Early growth: Reached over three meters in combined body-and-neck height after her stay near Highgarden 73.
  • Later size: Became so large that Tyrion estimated Gary’s other three dragons together would still be smaller 291.
  • Divine humanoid form: A white-haired woman retaining dragon horns and wings 358 362.

Personality

Krysalis is deeply protective of Gary. Her decision to abandon her original body was motivated by the wish to remain with him for his entire life, and she trained the Shadowcat specifically as his bodyguard. She objected when he proposed giving the animal away because of the effort and care she had invested in it 30 62.

She combines ancient magical experience with a playful, sometimes boastful manner. Gary considers her somewhat childish despite her age; she proudly demonstrates her fire magic and later greets her dramatic arrival in King’s Landing by asking whether her timing was perfect 21 88 291.

Power is not initially an ambition of hers. When Teresa suggests pursuing godhood, Krysalis explicitly refuses. She also continues to regard Gary with affectionate familiarity as his authority grows, remarking that “Luke has finally grown up” when summoned to the seat of the human throne 261 325.
