History
Childhood at Winterfell
Arya befriended Gary, known to her as Luke, during his early years at Winterfell. When Sansa urged Catelyn to expel him as dangerous, Arya argued with her sister and refused to eat until their mother abandoned the idea. Gary responded by spending time with her, preparing special meals from game he hunted, and secretly teaching her archery 20.
During a thunderstorm, Arya climbed into Gary’s bed and unexpectedly entered his dream. Unlike a figure created by the dream, she resisted his commands. Her contact with his magical energy caused the dream to collapse, drawing both of them into its deeper layers 23.
Within the dream’s Ming-era setting, Arya was chased away as a foreign beggar and became injured and feverish. Gary found her and altered the dream to heal her. She was unaffected by his accelerated dream time: while two days and nights passed outside her room, she experienced less than three hours 25 27.
Their disappearance prompted a search throughout Winterfell. After they awoke, Robb instructed Arya to tell Catelyn that she had fallen asleep in a wardrobe, preventing Gary from being blamed for hiding her 24 29.
Spear Training and Departure
Arya later asked to learn the foreign martial arts preserved in Gary’s dreams. Her aptitude lay in six fast spear forms rather than the complete Qi Family Saber system. Even after becoming proficient, she continued practicing every afternoon, usually alongside Gary and sometimes Jon Snow 32 34.
When Gary left Winterfell, Arya secretly followed him, pursuing him for a day and a night. Inspired by his stories of wandering heroes, she wanted to travel the Seven Kingdoms with him. She brought Catelyn’s jewelry box, her spears, and the ancestral greatsword Ice, which she had taken because Gary lacked a suitable sword 37.
Their journey was interrupted by Wind Spirit possessing a Shadowcat. Arya refused to flee, but fear caused her to forget her spear forms. After the creature broke her wooden spear, she struggled to raise Gary’s Ice Spear; Wind Spirit sensed its magic and mistook her for a White Walker 38.
Arya also shot at the Shadowcat with her hunting bow. Afterward, her mare died of fright, and she tearfully called herself a burden. Gary praised her courage and continued toward King’s Landing with her riding his horse 40.
First Visit to King’s Landing
Arya accompanied Gary and Tyrion to the Kingswood tourney. When Robert questioned Gary’s claim to be a wizard, she publicly declared that he could use ice magic, prompting his demonstration with the king’s goblet and the Ice Rose 45 52.
Gary eventually entrusted her to Ser Kesso and the northern soldiers returning to Winterfell. At their farewell, he promised to visit within four years. Arya later rejected reports of his death because the Ice Spear beneath her bed had never melted 54 90.
Wandering with the Hound
Following Winterfell’s fall and the Red Wedding, Arya wandered with Sandor Clegane. Her Ice Spear had been lost in King’s Landing, leaving her with a wooden staff. Sandor intended to take her to the Eyrie and demand a ransom from her aunt Lysa 118.
News from merchant Ruslan Cook changed their destination. On learning that Luke had returned from Essos with a dragon and reclaimed Winterfell, Arya persuaded Sandor to escort her north, promising that Luke would pay him 118.
During the journey, she borrowed money to compensate a farmer who had previously helped her. She apologized sincerely for the unpleasant events surrounding their earlier encounter 121.
Homecoming and Sandor’s Service
Arya reached Winterfell while Gary was away reinforcing Castle Black. In her room, she discovered his gift: Soulhunter, a Valyrian steel spear that could be dismantled and fitted with a lighter ironwood shaft suitable for her size 139 140.
She then stole the dungeon keys and approached the imprisoned Sandor. Although she resented him for killing her friend, she remained grateful for his protection. She offered him service as her hound rather than imprisonment, and he agreed to follow her without initially swearing fealty 140.
The pair left Winterfell that night and traveled to Castle Black. There, Arya reunited with Jon, Bran, and finally Gary, who insisted that she return to Winterfell with him rather than continue roaming through wartime territory 141 176.
Recruiting the Mountain Clans
Gary selected Arya to seek the Mountain Clans’ support after she and Bran vouched for their loyalty to House Stark. Sandor and twenty Ice Warriors escorted her, while Gary secretly followed on Drogon in case she needed help 180 182.
Arya observed the clans’ customs, dismounted courteously, and addressed their chiefs with Winterfell’s traditional honorifics. Torgenheng Flint welcomed her, pledged a thousand warriors for the attack on Deepwood Motte, and offered to summon the other chiefs. She also learned that her great-grandmother, Arya Flint, had belonged to his clan 182.
After more than ten days, Arya returned with over three thousand warriors drawn from more than forty clans. Their leaders swore fealty to Gary 184.
Southern Mission and the Red Keep
After receiving her ceremonial general’s title, Arya intensified her training and gained the Supreme God’s strength blessing. She secured permission to accompany Bran south, with Sandor and Brienne protecting them 216 219 224.
The group established itself in a stone house near King’s Landing. While Bran watched the Lannisters through skinchanging, Arya and Brienne gathered supplies and information in the city. Arya encountered Jaqen on the road and returned his iron coin, saying she no longer needed it 232 233.
When Gary arrived, she warned him that the Gold Cloaks were questioning travelers. She later joined his assault on the Red Keep, fighting the Gold Cloaks alongside his ice wolves. Gary allowed her to accompany him into further fighting because she could now defend herself but still needed experience 275 287 290.
Arya descended on Krysalis with Gary during the Gold Cloaks’ surrender and accompanied him back toward the Throne Room. During the subsequent crisis involving the Sparrows, Gary ordered Brienne to keep Arya and Bran behind 291 306.
Appearance
- Childhood features: Repeatedly described with chubby cheeks, which Gary often pinches affectionately 20 32 37.
- Later appearance: At Castle Black, she has ear-length hair, wears brown leather armor, and carries a spear on her back 176.
- Other clothing: Wears a new pink gown during her first visit to King’s Landing 44.
Personality
Arya is fiercely loyal to those she loves. As a small child, she opposed both Sansa and Catelyn to protect Gary’s place at Winterfell. She continued believing he was alive despite reports of his death and crossed dangerous territory to reunite with him 20 90 118 176.
Her independence often becomes recklessness: she secretly follows Gary, takes valuable family possessions, and frees Sandor without permission. Nevertheless, she recognizes fear and failure rather than being immune to them. After the Shadowcat encounter, she admits that terror made her forget her training and worries that she will endanger Gary 37 40 140 141.
Arya combines compassion with a strong desire for retribution. She sincerely compensates a farmer who helped her, yet demands that those responsible for House Stark’s suffering pay for their actions. She also intervenes during Gary’s duel with Brienne, recognizing both Brienne’s ability and his interest in recruiting her 121 221 224.

Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Soulhunter — A custom Valyrian steel spear forged by Gary, decorated with direwolf motifs. Its threaded construction separates into a spearhead and three shaft sections. A lighter ironwood shaft lets Arya use the head before she is strong or tall enough for the complete metal weapon 135 140.
- Ice Spear — Gary’s earlier gift, featuring a translucent head, a sculpted dragon, and cloud reliefs. Its stored mana turns anyone it wounds into ice shards. The charge is finite, the weapon can freeze its wielder’s hands, and Arya initially finds it too heavy. Later lost in King’s Landing 32 118.
- Wooden spear and staff — Training and makeshift weapons. Wind Spirit’s Shadowcat breaks her wooden spear; after losing the Ice Spear, she travels with a wooden staff 38 118.
- Hunting bow — Used during the Shadowcat encounter 40.
- Ice Core — Given by Gary before the Mountain Clan mission, with instructions to smash it in an emergency 180.
- Jaqen’s iron coin — Returned to him near King’s Landing after Arya declares she no longer needs it 233.
Relationships
- Gary / Luke Stark — Her beloved brother figure, protector, martial instructor, and king. She defends him against expulsion, while he teaches her, equips her, and grants her the title of princess 20 32 191.
- Sandor Clegane — Initially her traveling companion seeking a ransom, later her guard and sparring partner. Their bond includes resentment over his killing of her friend and gratitude for his protection. Though he initially follows without an oath, he later tells Gary that he has sworn fealty to Arya 118 140 180 220.
- Bran Stark — Her younger brother and companion on the Crownlands intelligence mission. Both volunteer to approach the Mountain Clans before Gary selects Arya 180 224 232.
- Sansa Stark — Her elder sister. Their disagreement over Gary develops into prolonged estrangement during childhood 10 20 21.
- Jon Snow — Reassures young Arya that Gary will protect her, occasionally spars with her, and reunites with her at Castle Black 20 34 176.
- Eddard Stark and Catelyn Tully — Her parents. Both organize a search when she disappears into Gary’s dream; Arya also openly resists Catelyn’s attempt to send him away 20 24.
- Brienne of Tarth — Her southern escort and protector. Arya intervenes in Brienne’s duel with Gary, and Brienne later shields her when Jaqen appears 221 224 233.
- Jaqen — A friend she recognizes as a Faceless Man. She initially fears he has come to assassinate her or Luke, then returns his coin after he explains his mission 233.
- Torgenheng Flint — A distant blood relative through Arya Flint. Welcomes Arya’s delegation and helps rally the Mountain Clans 182.
- Septa Hanna — Cares for Arya after her return to Winterfell and attempts unsuccessfully to keep her there until Gary returns 139 140 141.

Trivia
