Background / History

Life in Lordaeron

Before living as a Lannister, Arthas was the prince of Lordaeron. His attempts to defend his homeland against the Scourge became entangled with impulsiveness, revenge, and the Lich King's influence. He broke with his mentor and beloved, then took up Frostmourne—a weapon he remembers as both a source of tremendous power and the instrument of his ruin 3.

He subsequently became a Death Knight and then the Lich King. His memories include fighting beside Uther and Jaina, serving among the Silver Knights, and contesting Ner'zhul's control of his body. In his second life, Frostmourne can no longer influence him as it once did 3 4 9 28 42.

Life at Casterly Rock

Arthas grew up as Tywin Lannister's third son and became the family's heir after Jaime joined the Kingsguard. Although his swordsmanship carried over from his previous life, his new body required extensive conditioning. After awakening Unholy Aura at ten, he practiced daily at Casterly Rock's highest point to strengthen it 1 4.

Commoners regarded him warmly, but his relationship with Tywin was openly hostile. He initially refused to travel to King's Landing and nearly killed Gregor Clegane after the Mountain attacked him outside Tywin's council hall. He ultimately accepted Tywin's proposal to win the anticipated royal tourney and attract a great-house marriage, while warning that further coercion could end with Tywin's death 1.

Appearance

Arthas is a notably handsome, tall, powerfully built youth whose appearance changes when he channels his restored powers 8 27 30 45.

  • Hair: Normally long and golden. White streaks appear as his power develops; during stronger manifestations, nearly all his hair becomes white or gray-white 16 30 42.
  • Eyes: Normally golden, turning silver-white and sometimes glowing spectral blue when he uses magic 7 8 30 42.
  • Build: Taller and more imposing than the older Lancel, and half a head taller than Gendry 22 36.
  • Armor: Wears silver-white heavy armor with broad pauldrons and a dark-blue sheen during his mounted challenge against the Lannister knights 27.
  • Supernatural presence: Can radiate a piercing chill that contrasts sharply with his usual gentle smile and approachable manner 3 7 23.

Personality

Arthas considers protecting common people a lord's responsibility rather than an optional kindness. He condemns Gregor's exploitation, treats Pike without aristocratic disdain, and invests in public order and relief work. His experiences in Lordaeron have made him wary of impulsive heroism: he explicitly recognizes that good intentions can cause harm when pursued without judgment 2 3 44 45.

His compassion coexists with authoritarian methods. He demands obedience from subordinates, uses necromancy to manipulate negotiations, and cultivates loyalty that can override royal authority. His courteous public manner frequently conceals threats or calculated deception, particularly when dealing with Robert, Renly, Brynden, and the Faith 22 24 37 40 48.

Arthas is exceptionally confident in combat and enjoys genuinely dangerous opposition. He dismisses etiquette as subordinate to power and resents having his strength questioned. He is also disillusioned with romance after Jaina's departure, recognizing Margaery's ambition and finding Cersei's attention uncomfortable 4 6 9 14 19.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship and Anatomical Precision

Arthas retains the expertise of his previous life, including knowledge of human anatomy beyond that of Westerosi maesters 4 11.

  • Defeated Jaime before the main Kingsguard challenge, then overcame all seven Kingsguard together 8 9 11.
  • Deliberately allowed Barristan's sword through his chest while avoiding his internal organs, creating an opening against the surrounding knights 9 11.
  • Impaled Daven during mounted combat without damaging an organ or bone 28 30.
  • Matched and increasingly pressured Syrio Forel using Renly's lighter sword, deliberately setting aside his overwhelming strength advantage 41 43.

Unholy Aura

Unholy Aura supports physical conditioning, increases combat speed, and accelerates recovery 1 4 9.

  • Gradually repaired the internal injuries caused by blocking Gregor's greatsword 1.
  • Healed his arena wound faster than it continued bleeding 11.
  • At full strength, visibly closed the wound inflicted by Syrio; Arthas later appeared healthy and uninjured 42 43.
  • Enables him to survive severe wounds, but the earlier Kingsguard injury specifically relied on avoiding vital organs rather than immunity to damage 11.

Soul-Binding and Necromancy

Arthas can exchange supernatural power for ownership of another person's soul 30 32.

  • Death Knight creation: Transformed Daven through Frostmourne, granting strength and enforcing absolute obedience 30.
  • Acolyte empowerment: Gave Pike powers that differ from the usual acolyte-to-shade transformation. Arthas is uncertain whether the anomaly comes from Pike or from changes to his magic after entering Westeros 18.
  • Mind control: Supplemented his deception of Brynden Tully with necromantic influence 37.
  • Reanimation: Raised undead to attack worshippers in the Great Sept 46.
  • Limits: Creating Daven required years of accumulated magic. At that point, Arthas lacked the power to turn Margaery into a banshee 30.

Remote Magic and Command

Arthas can act through magical connections and communicate directly with his empowered servants 42.

  • Sensed an ancient presence intruding upon the magical seed he had concealed inside Jaime 42.
  • Used that seed as a medium for magic across thousands of miles, at considerable physical cost 42.
  • Spoke directly into Daven's hearing and imprinted an approximate target location in his mind 42.

Horsemanship and Military Training

Arthas combines skilled riding with magical assistance and personal instruction of his troops 3 28.

  • Defeated ten mounted Lannister knights without receiving a scratch, initially using the flat of Frostmourne against them 28 30.
  • Personally trained the knights who accompanied him from the Westerlands 3.
  • Reorganized six thousand Gold Cloaks into one hundred squads for Operation Hundred-Day Purge 32.
  • Continued their training program with Syrio as swordsmanship instructor 43 44.

Political and Financial Strategy

Arthas uses family wealth, public popularity, legal authority, and deception to build an independent power base 19 37 40.

  • Advised Tyrion to secure royal commercial privileges for House Lannister and use the Crown's debts as leverage 19.
  • Obtained 1.5 million Gold Dragons from the Vale through a fabricated account of Lannister financial distress, reinforced by mind control 37.
  • Persuaded Renly to support his reforms despite Robert's orders to halt them 40.
  • Intentionally strengthened his hold over the Gold Cloaks to make royal dismissal difficult 40.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Frostmourne — His deep-blue greatsword and former cursed weapon. It absorbs souls, channels his soul-binding magic, and gradually regains its ram's-skull ornamentation. Unlike in his previous life, it can no longer influence him 3 9 30 46.
  • Silver-white heavy armor — Broad-shouldered armor with a dark-blue reflection, worn against the ten Lannister knights. It lacks the skull decorations associated with his former appearance 27.
  • Invincible — His tall, pure-white warhorse, ridden during the Great Sept procession and mounted challenge 22 27 28.
  • Helm of Domination—previous life — Worn when he attained godlike power as the Lich King; explicitly absent from his mounted appearance in King's Landing 22 27.

Relationships

  • Tywin Lannister — Father and political adversary. Arthas cooperates with his dynastic plans reluctantly and privately remains determined that Tywin must eventually die 1 19.
  • Tyrion Lannister — Elder brother and trusted collaborator. Tyrion supports Arthas's ambitions, while Arthas advises him on protecting Lannister interests as acting Master of Coin 7 18 19.
  • Jaime Lannister — Elder brother and defeated rival. Jaime worries for his safety but also resents Cersei's attention toward him; Arthas later uses a magical seed inside Jaime for remote intervention 8 11 42.
  • Cersei Lannister — Elder sister and early supporter of his appointment. Her attraction to him makes Arthas uncomfortable, though he accepts an invitation to meet her 5 6 19.
  • Jaina — Former beloved and companion in Lordaeron. Her departure left Arthas weary of romantic attachment 3 9 14 19.
  • Uther — Former mentor whose instruction contributed to Arthas's martial and anatomical knowledge 3 11.
  • Pike — Soul-bound servant and assassin. Arthas first hears his grievances on Clegane lands, later empowers him, and employs him against Baelish 2 18 32.
  • Daven Lannister — Initially a resistant knight; later Arthas's first Death Knight in Westeros. Daven offers his soul, recognizes Arthas as his god, and obeys his northern assignments 27 30 42.
  • Lancel Lannister — Cousin and principal aide. Arthas's demanding mentorship and support after the High Septon's death turn Lancel into a devoted follower 22 23 41.
  • Robert Baratheon — King who appoints him commander after the Kingsguard contest, then dismisses him when his actions and popularity become a threat 12 39 48.
  • Renly Baratheon — Political ally whom Arthas persuades to endorse his actions against the Faith and continue supporting the purge 27 40 48.
  • Margaery Tyrell — Persistent suitor whose interest Arthas initially rejects as driven by ambition. She continues visiting him after his dismissal 14 19 49.
  • Syrio Forel — Challenger who becomes the Gold Cloaks' swordsmanship instructor after dueling Arthas 41 43 44.
  • Gendry — Powerful young fighter promoted to Arthas's personal guard; later participates in the deception of Janos under Arthas's instructions 36 41 50.
  • High Sparrow — Religious leader installed by Arthas, who recognizes his concealed hunger for power. Their relationship develops into open confrontation 23 24 44 46.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Journey to King's Landing

On Clegane lands, Arthas intervenes after learning of grain theft, violence, and Gregor's exploitation of his subjects. He spares Gregor but orders the grain returned, suspends taxes for three years, and assigns Tyrion to administer the lands until Gregor learns to govern properly. The episode establishes his authority over the Mountain and earns Pike's gratitude 2 3.

Kingsguard Challenge and Appointment

When the Small Council questions his suitability to command the City Watch, Arthas rejects a deputy appointment and challenges all seven Kingsguard before the city's nobles. He kills Meryn Trant and another Kingsguard at the outset, then defeats the survivors while leaving Jaime alive 5 6 9 11.

Robert appoints him Commander of the City Watch after hearing his pledge of service. At the subsequent banquet, the king publicly celebrates him as Westeros's mightiest warrior 12 14.

Consolidating Control of the Capital

Arthas confronts Baelish over Jon Arryn's murder and dismisses his attempt to use Joffrey's parentage as leverage. Pike subsequently kills Baelish, while Tyrion becomes acting Master of Coin 16 18.

Within the Faith, Arthas exposes the High Septon's abuse of two septas. After Lancel kills the High Septon, Arthas installs the High Sparrow as his replacement. He then defeats the resistant Lannister knights and converts Daven into a Death Knight, extending his authority beyond ordinary military allegiance 23 28 30.

Operation Hundred-Day Purge

Arthas deploys the Gold Cloaks throughout King's Landing and uncovers Janos Slynt's hoarded wealth. He initially sentences Janos to death, then offers street-cleaning service followed by exile to the Night's Watch. Janos's public humiliation draws enthusiastic support for Arthas 32 35.

His wider reforms reduce violent crime and clean the streets through work performed by prisoners and Flea Bottom's poor. He secures additional funding from Brynden and commissions Tobho Mott to deliver two thousand sets of weapons and refined iron armor within three months, offering 150 Gold Dragons per set 37 45.

Supernatural Opposition and the Great Sept

During his duel with Syrio, Arthas becomes distracted by an ancient presence acting through Jaime's magical connection. After intervening remotely, he orders Daven to abandon his current task and hunt the entity using a location imprinted in his mind 41 42.

Meanwhile, the High Sparrow attempts to rebuild the Sons of the Warrior against him. Arthas attends the evening service, kills the armed men who attack, and raises undead within the sept. Worshippers are forced to sing Lannister praises as Frostmourne consumes more souls 44 45 46.

Dismissal and Continuing Influence

On returning to King's Landing, Robert dismisses Arthas and orders him back to the Westerlands. The crowd protests, attacks the royal party with eggs and stones, and refuses to accept the decision. Arthas announces that he will remain for three days and warns Robert to meet him before he can no longer guarantee events 48.

Riots follow, while the Gold Cloaks watch without intervening. Robert orders Janos restored to command, but Arthas remains confident. Lancel and Gendry subsequently stage a false quarrel before Janos under Arthas's instructions, showing that his followers still answer to him after his removal 49 50.
