Appearance
- Short, with a small mustache and a habitually courteous bearing 4 5.
- Uses broad smiles, exaggerated greetings, and elegant gestures when dealing with nobles 4 8.
- Appears bruised and battered after the disturbance following Arthas’s victory over the Kingsguard 13 15.
Personality
Baelish conceals resentment behind conspicuous courtesy. Even after Arthas and the Lannister knights splash him with street filth, he dismisses the incident as a child’s prank. Privately, he vows to bring the Lannisters and the other nobles beneath him 4.
His guiding principle is “Chaos is a ladder.” He welcomes the prospect of Arthas dying against the Kingsguard because the resulting upheaval could benefit him. His apparent attempts to discourage the challenge are deliberately provocative rather than protective 6.
He treats affection and patronage as leverage. He invokes his past support for Yahn Snow to demand money, while his appeal to Lysa combines false declarations of love with a veiled reminder of her involvement in Jon Arryn’s murder 13 15.
His composure has limits. Initially calm when abducted at knifepoint, he offers his captor money; confronted with Arthas’s supernatural threats, he eventually begs for his life and offers to surrender everything he owns 16.
History
Rise to Office and Jon Arryn’s Murder
The eldest son of an insignificant noble family, Baelish rose from brothel-keeping to become the kingdom’s Master of Coin. He was also a foster son of Hoster Tully and retained connections to the Tully family and the Vale 4 6 17 37.
Baelish persuaded Lysa Tully to poison her husband, Jon Arryn, by claiming that her son would be sent away to be fostered elsewhere. Lysa put the Tears of Lys into Jon’s cup. Baelish also wrote to Catelyn, placing responsibility for the death on Cersei Lannister 16 17.
Conflict with Arthas Lannister
Baelish greets Arthas and Tyrion upon their return to King’s Landing, advertising his brothels and making sexual jokes about Arthas. Arthas rebukes him, orders him aside, and deliberately rides past fast enough to splash him with filth. The accompanying knights and Tyrion compound the humiliation 4.
At the Small Council, Baelish opposes Arthas’s appointment as Commander of the City Watch, citing his youth and the incumbent Janos Slynt’s position. When Arthas proposes fighting all seven Kingsguard to prove himself, Baelish privately anticipates his death. Arthas recognizes his hostility and warns that lawbreaking merchants will face scrutiny once he takes command 5 6.
The Losing Wager
Baelish operates the betting pool for Arthas’s contest against the Kingsguard. Although privately certain Arthas cannot win, he assures Tyrion of his confidence and accepts an enormous wager. Tyrion publicly calls on the assembled nobles to witness the promised payout 8.
| Financial obligation or resource | Amount | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Tyrion’s stake | 10,000 Gold Dragons | Wagered on Arthas at odds of 116 to 1 8 |
| Promised payout | 1,160,000 Gold Dragons | Baelish publicly guarantees that he can pay 8 |
| Demand made to Yahn Snow | 100,000 Gold Dragons | Required by the following morning 13 |
| Ready cash gathered | Nearly 500,000 Gold Dragons | Raised without selling his properties 15 |
| Requested Vale loan | 1,500,000 Gold Dragons | Sought through Lysa Tully 15 |
Arthas’s victory leaves Baelish owing Tyrion more than a million Gold Dragons. Other losing bettors accuse him of rigging the contest and turn violent. The Mountain carries Tyrion to safety with Baelish in tow 12.
Unable to borrow from the hostile nobles, Baelish pressures his subordinate Yahn Snow for money. Yahn pretends to cooperate but instead approaches Tyrion with information about Baelish’s illegal dealings and the Tears of Lys 13 15.
Baelish eventually realizes the Lannister brothers have outplayed him. He considers negotiating installment payments, then writes to Lysa for enough money to settle the debt and potentially leave him a profit 15.
Forced Resignation
Pike abducts Baelish from his bedroom and takes him to Arthas by the sea. Arthas displays Yahn’s corpse, explains his attempted betrayal, and confronts Baelish with the Tears of Lys. Baelish admits that he caused Jon Arryn’s death 16.
Baelish attempts to protect himself by invoking the Lannisters’ vulnerability over Joffrey’s parentage. Arthas dismisses the threat and promises that Baelish’s body and soul will disappear before Robert learns the truth 16.
Under threat of immediate execution, Baelish signs a prepared letter declaring himself bankrupt, resigning as Master of Coin, and recommending Tyrion as his replacement. He boards a waiting boat, still suggesting that Robert might refuse another Lannister appointment and eventually require his return. Arthas then orders Pike to follow him, having promised only that Baelish would survive the night 16.
Death and Aftermath
Smugglers carrying Baelish toward the Vale discover him dead in his cabin, his throat cut and the skin removed from his face. Pike later confirms the killing to Arthas and presents the bloodied face as a trophy, which Arthas permits him to keep 17 18.
Publicly, Baelish is treated as a bankrupt official who fled his creditors. Robert appoints Tyrion acting Master of Coin despite Varys’s objections, and ownership of Baelish’s Street of Silk businesses passes to Tyrion 18 34.
Lysa nevertheless sends the requested 1.5 million Gold Dragons, overriding warnings that the payment would exhaust the Vale’s reserves. Brynden Tully delivers the money after Baelish’s death, unaware of his fate. Arthas uses fabricated claims of financial hardship and necromantic mind control to persuade Brynden to apply the shipment to Baelish’s debts 17 36 37.
