Background
Robert was once a powerful, charismatic warrior whose heavy warhammer had killed countless enemies. After more than ten years as king, he has become severely overweight and can no longer lift that weapon 8 11.
Jon Arryn’s death prompts Robert to seek Eddard Stark as his new Hand. What begins as a journey to recruit an old friend becomes an urgent effort to counter the Lannisters’ growing control of King’s Landing 1 39 43.
Appearance
- Build: Formerly heavily muscular; now exceptionally corpulent 5.
- Eyes: Deep-set, with pronounced dark circles; frequently bloodshot after drinking or poor sleep 5 18.
- Complexion: Often flushed from alcohol, excitement, or anger 8 14 48.
- Bearing: Possesses a booming voice and an imposing presence, though drunkenness frequently leaves him unsteady 5 14 44.
Personality
Robert prizes martial courage even in people he otherwise dislikes. Arthas’s victory over the Kingsguard turns his initial contempt into genuine admiration, and Robert willingly rewards him despite his hostility toward House Lannister. He also comforts the defeated Kingsguard rather than treating their loss as a disgrace 5 12.
His favorite pursuits are hunting, drinking, and visiting prostitutes. He uses Arthas’s appointment as an excuse for a feast and resents Eddard’s warnings about hunting while drunk 13 14 44.
Despite neglecting government, Robert is not politically oblivious. He recognizes the suspicious circumstances of Baelish’s disappearance and later understands that Barristan’s failure to greet him was caused by intercepted information. His concern over Lannister influence becomes an explicit fear of losing his throne 18 44 48.
His judgment deteriorates when his authority or interests are threatened. He responds to public opposition with insults and orders for suppression, then invokes defective trial procedure to justify restoring Janos Slynt despite knowing the charges against him are substantive 48 49.
Abilities & Skills
Warhammer Combat
Robert’s reputation rests on his former battlefield strength and experience 11 14.
- Claims that, as a young man, he could crush an enemy’s head with one hammer blow 14.
- The narration places his chances against Barristan Selmy at no better than even, including at Robert’s peak 11.
- His present condition prevents him from lifting his old warhammer 8.
Personal Leadership
Robert can inspire loyalty through recognition, generosity, and concern for his retainers 12 39.
- Reassures the Kingsguard after their defeat and orders them to have their wounds treated 12.
- Retains Arys Oakheart’s devotion despite his disorderly private life 39.
- Maintains Eddard’s loyalty through their longstanding friendship and brotherhood in arms 43.
- Cannot translate royal rank into obedience from Arthas’s Gold Cloaks, who ignore his direct command during the Flea Bottom confrontation 48.
Hunting
- Hunts during the northern journey to relieve his frustration 39.
- Kills two wild boars on the return journey 44.
- Hunts while intoxicated despite Eddard’s warning that doing so endangers his life 44.
Royal Finances
Robert’s extravagance exhausts the wealth left by the Targaryens and leaves the Crown heavily indebted. Varys attributes the situation to the king’s rapid spending and poor understanding of money 18.
| Creditor | Amount Owed | Details |
|---|---|---|
| House Lannister | 3,000,000 Gold Dragons | A major financial exposure for the family after Tyrion becomes acting Master of Coin 18 19. |
| Iron Bank | 3,000,000 Gold Dragons | Arthas advises Tyrion to keep responsibility for repayment attached to Robert 18 19. |
| Faith of the Seven | 900,000 Gold Dragons | Tyrion’s appointment places him under pressure to address the debt 18 21. |
| Total itemized debt | 6,900,000 Gold Dragons | The combined obligations disclosed by Varys 18. |
- Janos Slynt’s hoard: Janos claims that nine-tenths of his seized money belongs to Robert. Robert’s private thoughts confirm that most of the million-plus Gold Dragons are his, making the confiscation a personal grievance as well as a challenge to his authority 35 39.
- Lannister countermeasures: Arthas recommends royal commercial privileges for House Lannister and using the Crown’s borrowing to strengthen the family’s leverage 19.
Relationships
- Cersei Lannister — Wife and queen. Their marriage is marked by mutual contempt and sexual estrangement. Robert remains unaware of her affair with Jaime, while she resents his enduring attachment to Lyanna 8 20 39.
- Eddard “Ned” Stark — Closest friend and brother-in-arms. Robert recruits him as Hand to help break Lannister control of the capital; Ned remains loyal but is increasingly disappointed by his conduct 39 43 44 49.
- Lyanna — Deceased woman Robert continues to love. His attachment has become an obsession even as his memory of her appearance fades 39.
- Arthas Lannister — Initially an unwanted Lannister appointee, then a celebrated warrior and trusted commander, and finally a direct political adversary 5 12 14 48.
- Renly Baratheon — Brother and Master of Laws. Robert appoints him acting Hand to restrain Arthas, but Renly instead defends Arthas’s actions 39 40 48.
- Barristan Selmy — Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and trusted protector. Robert accepts his explanation for missing the royal arrival; Barristan subsequently shields him from the crowd’s projectiles 48.
- Arys Oakheart — Kingsguard whom Robert trusts second only to Barristan. Carries Varys’s report and receives Robert’s orders to curb Arthas 39.
- Tyrion Lannister — Appointed acting Master of Coin despite Robert’s earlier public mockery. Robert instructs Varys to monitor his performance 8 18.
- Janos Slynt — Former City Watch commander who holds substantial funds for Robert. The king seeks to restore him when Arthas’s dismissal leaves the Watch unresponsive 35 39 49.
- Joffrey — Acknowledged eldest son. Robert supports his marriage to Sansa Stark, unaware that Joffrey’s Baratheon surname does not reflect his actual parentage 16 21 44.
- Myrcella — Acknowledged daughter. Robert briefly considers marrying her to Arthas, then rejects the thought because of her youth and their close kinship 12.
- Gendry — Suspected illegitimate son. Arthas infers the connection from Gendry’s resemblance to Renly but does not investigate 36.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Appointment of Arthas
Tywin recommends Arthas as Commander of the City Watch before Robert’s departure for Winterfell. Robert angrily objects that the queen, a Kingsguard, and now the proposed Watch commander are all Lannisters. His drunken tirade ends when Jaime escorts him from the hall 5.
Robert readily approves Arthas’s challenge against all seven Kingsguard, expecting an entertaining defeat. Instead, Arthas’s performance rekindles his enthusiasm for battle. After the victory, Robert accepts Arthas’s pledge of loyalty, grants him command of the Gold Cloaks, and hosts a celebratory banquet 8 9 11 12 13.
Baelish’s Disappearance
When Arthas presents Baelish’s resignation, Robert notices signs of conspiracy but accepts Tyrion as acting Master of Coin until his return from Winterfell. He dismisses Varys’s objections while ordering him to assess Tyrion’s competence 18.
Northern Journey and Loss of Control
While approaching Winterfell, Robert receives Varys’s account of Arthas’s replacement of the High Septon, purge of the capital, and confiscation of Janos’s wealth. The report also reveals that Renly and Barristan have supported the reforms 39.
Robert orders them to restrain Arthas, grants Renly authority to dismiss him, and seeks Ned’s help against Lannister dominance. Renly later conveys demands that Arthas halt the purge, reverse Janos’s judgment, and return the confiscated property 39 40.
Return to King’s Landing
Robert returns to find no senior officials waiting at the gates. Directed to Flea Bottom’s sewer inauguration, he is nevertheless astonished by the clean streets, orderly commerce, and disciplined patrols 47.
At the confrontation, Renly takes responsibility for authorizing Arthas’s actions. Eddard identifies the absence of a required seven-person jury, giving Robert grounds to dismiss Arthas and order him back to the Westerlands 48.
The crowd protests and pelts the royal party with eggs and stones. The Gold Cloaks ignore Robert’s command to disperse them, intervening only after Arthas signals Lancel. Robert refuses to reverse the dismissal; Arthas gives him three days to seek a meeting before he will cease guaranteeing what happens 48.
Unrest After the Dismissal
By the following morning, Eddard reports more than one hundred violent incidents and at least fifteen large demonstrations. The Gold Cloaks remain passive, and some nobles’ homes have been stormed 49.
Unable to identify a better replacement, Robert orders Janos released to recover control of the Watch. When Ned objects to restoring a convicted man, Robert argues that the unlawful trial procedure invalidated the verdict and that any retrial must wait until order is restored 49.
