Arc 1The Blackstone Awakening

Edd Flint used his newly awakened powers to defeat the Bloodheart Clan, the demon B'lack, and Alys Rivers while expanding House Flint’s domain. He began studying and creating magic, then awakened Bran and Ralf to new abilities as Maester Albert chose to record and teach what they learned.

  • Edd Flint asserted his authority over House Flint, announced plans to develop the domain, and showed Maester Albert a Glass Candle tied to his past and near-fatal poisoning.
  • The Glass Candle transformed Edd in the Dream World, giving him a Golden Eye and strange powers that he used to control the heart tree and confront a threat to the castle.
  • The Bloodheart Clan occupied House Flint’s mine, while Ralf "Eel" learned that Bel’s strength came from a mysterious ritual promising treasure.
  • Edd used his powers to foil the Ironborn pirates’ attack, then led House Flint’s forces against the Bloodheart Clan and its rising Wights.
  • At the Blackstone Ruins, Edd fought and swallowed the demon B'lack, sealed the evil spirit Alys Rivers in dragonglass, and absorbed a surge of power.
  • Edd created White Holy Tree as a thinking assistant and began transforming B'lack into a Demonspawn to produce creatures for magic and labor.
  • Edd organized House Flint’s recovery and development, assigned his allies new duties, and asked Bran, Ralf, and Maester Albert what magic meant to them.
  • Edd awakened Bran with a Child of the Forest’s soul and Ralf with a Demon Child’s soul, while Maester Albert declined awakening and chose to study and teach magic.
Chapters 1–25 Vol. 1 Read

Ch. 1The lord by the sea

Edd Flint, a Chinese man reborn as the young lord of Flint's Finger, reflected on his precarious life and tried to record useful knowledge from his former world. After Maester Albert brought him a book about House Stark and reassured him about ruling, Edd returned to bed, while Albert read a message from the south and murmured about glass candles.

  • Edd Flint recalled his former life as Li Ke and his fear of the dangers awaiting him in Westeros.
  • Maester Albert brought Edd Maester Child's Genealogies and Legends of House Stark of Winterfell and cautioned him about writing in dim light.
  • Edd escorted Maester Albert back to the rookery, then returned to his bedroom and fell asleep thinking about improving his lands and surviving the coming disaster.
  • Maester Albert read a raven message from the south and murmured, "The Glass Candle... flames..." as the ravens grew noisy.

Ch. 2A "real" dream

Edd Flint dreamed of Maester Qyburn transforming into a monster and attacking him through a strange connection, then woke in his castle. After dressing and going to breakfast, Eddard overheard a cousin insulting him and addressed him with a pointed offer of a remedy.

  • In a vision of the Citadel, an unidentified maester burned a raven message and looked forward to Qyburn's punishment.
  • The Conclave stripped Qyburn of his maester's chain, but Qyburn transformed into a smoke monster and slaughtered those in the hall.
  • The monster sensed Eddard watching, attacked him, and jolted Edd Flint awake in terror at Flint's Finger Castle.
  • Eddard told Auntie Aiju he was fine, got dressed with help from her and Wild Rose, and went to breakfast.
  • Eddard heard a heavily bearded cousin mock him, then offered the man a medicinal remedy for his cough.

Ch. 3House Flint of Flint's Finger

Eddard asserted his authority over Flint's Finger when Rickard "Scar" challenged him at breakfast, then summoned the castle's principal figures to a council meeting. The chapter ended as Eddard opened House Flint's first castle meeting.

  • Eddard noticed his breakfast's smell and taste, prompting Rickard "Scar" to question whether he looked down on Flint's Finger's food.
  • Eddard reminded Rickard "Scar" that he had been assigned the western mountain mines and declared himself the recognized lord and sole master of the domain.
  • Rickard "Scar" and his sons yielded to Eddard's authority and ate breakfast with him.
  • After breakfast, Eddard ordered the castle's principal figures to gather in the council hall instead of letting Rickard "Scar" leave.
  • Maester Albert introduced Eddard to the castle staff, including steward Billy Blackwood, tax collector Beris, and captain of the guard Arthur Stone.
  • Eddard addressed the assembled staff and began House Flint's first castle meeting.

Ch. 4Reform

Eddard announced sweeping reforms for House Flint’s lands at Flint’s Finger Castle, including tax collection, roads, a Household Guard, workshops, and estates. He left his subordinates stunned as he prepared to build House Flint into a stronger power during the long summer.

  • A weirwood leaf drifted into Eddard’s hand during the gathering, and Maester Albert began presenting Eddard’s plans.
  • Eddard explained that he would replace the traditional tax system with officials collecting money and grain directly, while assuring Berris that he did not intend to raise taxes.
  • Eddard announced plans to build roads, plots, and granaries and to turn House Flint’s lands into a city like White Harbor.
  • Eddard ordered Berris to recruit tax officials and tasked Arthur Stone with establishing a roughly hundred-man Household Guard.
  • Eddard announced plans for workshops, a farm, and a commercial estate outside the castle.

Ch. 5The Glass Candle

Eddard tried to secure Maester Albert’s trust by presenting a Glass Candle and claiming it had shown him the knowledge behind his reforms. Albert left with Eddard’s regulations, unsettled but unable to dismiss the possibility of magic.

  • Eddard arranged for Rickard and his sons, Brandon and Bran, to stay at Flint's Finger and receive an education from him and Maester Albert.
  • Eddard gave Albert a document outlining domain regulations, including sanitation rules, and faced questions about where his ideas came from.
  • Eddard showed Albert a Glass Candle and claimed it had recognized him and was connected to the poisoning that had nearly killed him.
  • Eddard recounted his predecessor’s Citadel history, including lighting the Glass Candle, working with Marwyn and Qyburn, and studying magic.
  • Eddard argued that magic could be studied and used to improve his domain, while Albert listened and then left carrying the regulations.

Ch. 6Dreams

Eddard entered a strange dreamlike space after falling asleep with the Glass Candle and tried to understand its connection to magic. The chapter left him recovering from an overwhelming agony as the mysterious forces within him awakened.

  • Eddard realized he was dreaming but could not wake, and recalled falling asleep with the Glass Candle he had received from Archmaester Marwyn.
  • Eddard summoned the Glass Candle in the dream and found a strange, dying creature in his hand.
  • Eddard tried to revive the creature, and black matter enveloped him as his body endured alternating cold and heat.
  • Eddard awoke within the dream with a scaled left arm, a crystalline right arm, and two powerful consciousnesses lurking within them.
  • A strange natural rhythm transformed Eddard’s surroundings, and he found himself among the roots of an enormous tree as pale green mist murmured around him.
  • Eddard’s perception was overwhelmed by visions and unbearable pain before his body and senses began to recover.

Ch. 7Golden Eye

Eddard awakened after a long, mysterious unconsciousness and discovered that his golden third eye had given him powerful perception and some ability to influence others’ thoughts. After rejoining his household and gathering his strength, he learned that bandits had attacked a mine and a village near Pasture Town.

  • While unconscious, Eddard used the eye between his brows to perceive those around him, sense their emotions, and see their distorted forms.
  • Eddard discovered that his body had transformed below the neck, with enlarged mutated hands, golden eyes, and a golden eye between his brows.
  • Eddard returned to his body and awakened, then allowed Maester Albert to examine him before dressing and eating.
  • Eddard led Maester Albert to the council hall, where his gathered subordinates greeted him.
  • Arthur Stone reported that attackers, likely bandits from the Western Mountains, had raided the mine and a village near Pasture Town.

Ch. 8Mountain bandits?

Bel and the Bloodheart Clan seized House Flint’s mining hut, killed and captured its workers, and demanded that the miners submit. Ralf “Eel” realized the attack seemed to have a purpose beyond ordinary raiding and offered Bel a way to draw out the miners trapped inside the mine.

  • Bel declared the mine Bloodheart Clan territory and threatened the captured miners while his warriors held the site.
  • Thin Pigeon organized a defense, but Bel knocked him unconscious; before being captured, Thin Pigeon had the beacon lit so the transport ship left early.
  • Ralf “Eel” regretted missing his chance to escape with the ship and feared the clan’s unusual decision to occupy the mine.
  • As Ralf recalled the Bloodheart Clan’s strange faith and suspected they were waiting for someone or something, Bel dragged him to the mine entrance.
  • Bel demanded to know how to get the miners hiding behind rubble out of the mine, and Ralf offered to help.

Ch. 9A fearsome power

Eddard ordered Flint’s Finger to raise troops and prepare supplies, then discovered that his Golden Eye could reveal terrifying visions of a possible sea attack. He used it to investigate the castle’s heart tree and ended the chapter trapped in a deathly presence that overwhelmed his senses.

  • Eddard ordered Arthur Stone to issue summons and hiring orders while Beris and Maester Albert arranged food and weapons.
  • Eddard questioned “Scar” Rickard about pirates in Brightflame Bay, and Rickard said the pirates generally served the Ironborn and were deterred by nearby northern houses.
  • Eddard used the Golden Eye to perceive sea monsters attacking Rickard, his sons, and the guards, and the visions frightened them; he concluded that an attack from the sea might be coming.
  • Eddard sent Rickard and his sons to gather sailors and ships, then considered his Golden Eye’s resemblance to a Greenseer’s powers and decided to investigate the castle’s heart tree.
  • Eddard directed his perception toward the heart tree and encountered an ancient, hateful presence that weakened him and drew him toward an endless abyss.

Ch. 10The demon spirit in another dimension

Eddard entered a distorted space at Sea Dragon Point, where he fought off a mass of corrupted souls and took control of an enormous heart tree. After learning how the tree processed souls and sensing that the Others and dragons were tied to mysterious forces, he began considering how he might create the Others.

  • Eddard regained his senses inside a distorted space and used the Golden Eye's power to drive back a monstrous mass of organs and souls.
  • Eddard followed a soothing rhythm to an enormous heart tree, then overcame its attack with the golden, blood-red, and black powers within him.
  • Eddard touched the heart tree's face, absorbed its blood-red sap, and gained control of the tree and its soul-manipulating methods.
  • Eddard learned that the heart tree housed untainted souls of the Children of the Forest and processed corrupted souls gathered at Sea Dragon Point.
  • Eddard recognized that the Others and dragons might be connected to mysterious forces, then considered creating the Others.

Ch. 11The demon's kin

“Eel” Ralf used a drugged venison feast to question the Bloodheart Clan’s warriors and learned that their magnar, Bel, was searching for treasure at the direction of their god, Be'lakor. As night fell, Bel led the clan in a terrifying ritual around a magically twisting fire, leaving Ralf frozen with fear.

  • “Eel” Ralf gained the Bloodheart Clan warriors’ confidence with food, drink, and gifts while guarding House Flint’s captured miners.
  • Ralf drugged the venison with Sweet Sleep Flower and questioned a warrior named Flint, who revealed that Be'lakor had promised treasure that would strengthen the clan.
  • A clan leader described how Bel gained supernatural strength, defeated the chief, and united nearby clans, while a mention of a mysterious ritual deepened Ralf’s suspicions.
  • At the hour of the owl, strange speech and drumbeats woke the clan warriors, who gathered around Bel as he set a pile of wooden fragments on fire.
  • Bel led the naked clan warriors in a frenzied dance as they chanted Be'lakor’s name, and the flames twisted unnaturally while Ralf watched in terror.

Ch. 12Parasitism

Eddard used his strengthened Golden Eye to interfere with the Ironborn pirate One-Eye Billy as Billy prepared an ambush at Flint's mine wharf. Eddard’s experiment left Billy terrified and weakened, while Eddard recovered and began recording what he had learned.

  • One-Eye Billy waited with three longships near House Flint’s mine wharf and told his crew they would attack northerners and seize their ships and harbor.
  • A House Flint transport approached the wharf with two oared warships following it, and Billy prepared to attack the transport.
  • As Billy’s lookout signaled the enemy’s arrival, Eddard’s intervention caused Billy to collapse in terror and left his crew uncertain what to do.
  • Eddard explained that the transport was bait and the main force was aboard the oared warships, which would flank the pirates when they attacked.
  • After using the Golden Eye to test his ability to possess living creatures and affect Billy, Eddard rested and began recording observations and possible taboos.

Ch. 13Breaking the enemy

Eddard used his control of the Twisted Soul inside One-Eye Billy to make Billy crash his longship into another, giving House Flint’s hidden Oared Warships the chance to attack. The surviving Ironborn ships were caught in a trap, and Marco found the transport blocking his planned escape.

  • House Flint’s transport cut its dock ropes and sailed southwest while the Ironborn longships pursued it, and Eddard observed the struggle between Billy’s soul and the Twisted Soul.
  • Eddard supported the Twisted Soul and Skinchanged Billy, who slammed into Little Camo and caused their longship to ram the neighboring vessel.
  • House Flint’s two Oared Warships emerged from concealment, grappled the remaining longship, and attacked its crew; Scar Rickard ordered his soldiers to board.
  • Marco abandoned the badly damaged longship and prepared to flee southwest, but House Flint’s transport appeared directly in his path.

Ch. 14Wights

Eddard discovered that the supposedly dead Bloodheart Clan warriors were transforming into wights and warned Housecat Bran through a vision. Bran’s warning was dismissed until the corpses rose and attacked House Flint’s soldiers, leaving the force under assault.

  • Arthur Stone led House Flint’s soldiers up toward the Mine Shantytown, where they killed the Bloodheart Clan warriors and left their bodies behind.
  • Eddard used the Golden Eye to see that the fallen warriors were not truly dead and that a black substance was transforming them.
  • Eddard contacted Housecat Bran through his perception and showed him a vision of the corpses rising and a horror lurking in the mine.
  • Housecat Bran warned the soldiers about wights, but Arthur Stone initially doubted him and sent men to inspect a corpse.
  • A risen Clan Warrior attacked a soldier, and the surrounding corpses began to writhe and move toward the troops.

Ch. 15Entering

House Flint’s force defeated the wights at the mine, but Bran’s vision revealed miners in danger and a mysterious ritual beneath the shantytown. Eddard, controlling Bran through Skinchanging, urged the soldiers forward as he investigated the passage to the Blackstone Ruins.

  • Rickard, Arthur Stone, and House Flint’s soldiers killed the last of the wights and regrouped after the fight.
  • Bran began describing black smoke and a greater threat in the mine, when he, Rickard, Brandon, and Arthur experienced a vision of the Bloodheart Clan’s ritual and captive miners.
  • Eddard revealed that he had skinchanged into Bran and used an illusion to convince the others that they needed to rescue their people quickly.
  • Bran called the soldiers to move out, and Eddard advanced toward the shantytown while the Bloodheart Clan warriors remained unaware that their ambush had failed.
  • Eddard found the scorched entrance to the Blackstone Ruins and learned through the warriors’ memories that Bel had opened it after a sacrifice the previous night.

Ch. 16Blackstone Ruins

Eddard confronted the creature sealed beneath the ruins’ altar while Bel’s ritual unleashed black mist and mental attacks. As the miners broke free and fought back, the dead began rising, and Ralf "Eel" tried to lead everyone out.

  • Eddard discovered that Bel was weakening a Black Dragonglass seal with blood offerings while strange black forces controlled the miners.
  • Bel sensed Eddard and unleashed a terrifying attack of black mist and horrific visions, but Eddard resisted it and captured a Twisted Soul.
  • Ralf "Eel" recalled how the Bloodheart Clan had drawn him into its ritual and how the miners had been left dazed and unresponsive.
  • After Bel’s scream broke the miners’ stupor, Ralf "Eel" gave them a hidden dagger and led them in killing the Bloodheart Clan warriors.
  • When a slain clan leader rose as a Wight, Ralf "Eel" ordered the miners to guard the exit and prepare to cut the rising corpses apart.

Ch. 17Demons and evil spirits

Eddard confronted the demon B'lack in the dream world and learned that it had been banished from another world and sealed away. He drew on the powers in his wrists to fight back, but B'lack swallowed him in a blast of flame, leaving his fate uncertain.

  • At the Blackstone Ruins, Eel Ralf saw a monstrous demon beside the motionless Wights, though Thin Pigeon could not see it and led the miners away.
  • Eddard recognized the creature in the dream world as a demon and recalled Grand Maester Bennifer's account of the creature that killed Aerea Targaryen.
  • Eddard learned that the demon called itself B'lack, came from a world named Brenham, and had been sealed after trying to claim this world.
  • B'lack attacked Eddard while the evil spirit hid, hoping to take the demon's body and power after their fight.
  • Eddard studied B'lack's attacks and drew matching amounts of flame and Dragonglass energy from his wrists to form a sword.
  • B'lack blasted Eddard with a fiery dragon's head and appeared to have swallowed him.

Ch. 18Sealing and analysis

Eddard emerged from the explosion transformed, fought the demon B'lack, and swallowed it with his mutated left hand. His Dragonglass right hand then sealed the watching evil spirit, and Eddard began questioning it about its identity.

  • The demon B'lack believed Eddard was a powerful Consciousness God and attacked him again despite its fear.
  • Eddard returned with grotesque mutations: his hands had become a blood-red, clawed limb and a twisted Dragonglass arm, while his head resembled an evil-eye creature.
  • Eddard probed the powerful consciousnesses within his hands as they helped him repel the demon B'lack and withstand its attacks.
  • Eddard's left hand transformed into a huge maw and swallowed the demon B'lack, whose struggles eventually stopped.
  • Eddard's right hand expanded and sealed the evil spirit inside Dragonglass, then allowed Eddard to question it.
  • The evil spirit called itself a humble witch and rambled, so Eddard tightened the Dragonglass around it and demanded its name.

Ch. 19Encounters and revelations

Eddard learned that Alys Rivers had become a monstrous spirit after a failed blood-magic ritual, but when she spoke of a promised new body, the dragonglass in his right hand consumed her and merged with his perception. The disturbance prompted Kinvara to leave Volantis for Westeros while the Starry Sept’s Council of Seven Stars prepared to investigate the northern threat and pressure King’s Landing.

  • Eddard questioned Alys Rivers, who explained her history with Aemond Targaryen and how her attempt to use their child as a vessel had transformed her into an evil spirit.
  • Alys Rivers said a revelation had led her to Blackstone Ruins in hopes of gaining a new body, and Eddard’s dragonglass eye swallowed her as a greater power erupted.
  • Three powerful consciousnesses suppressed the force that nearly expelled Eddard’s perception, and the dragonglass merged with him as he heard a terrifying roar.
  • In Volantis, Kinvara witnessed a disturbance in the flames, declared that the river of fate had changed, and announced three days later that she would travel west seeking the Lord of Light’s revelation.
  • At Oldtown, the Council of Seven Stars discussed a northern threat, planned to awaken allies in the north, and sought to use the crown’s debts to push reforms in King’s Landing.

Ch. 20Return and Review

The Three-Eyed Crow warned Leaf that a feared being had awakened and was returning for revenge. At Flint's Finger Castle, Eddard discovered golden dragonglass embedded in his chest, recorded what he had learned about magic, and resolved to focus his research on dragonglass.

  • The Three-Eyed Crow told Leaf that the being he had encountered in his dreams was growing stronger and would kill all living things.
  • Eddard woke from the Dream World and used the Golden Eye to find a golden point of light inside a piece of dragonglass embedded in his chest.
  • Auntie Aiju brought Eddard food and urged him to eat regularly, and he finished his meal before she left.
  • Eddard reviewed what he had learned about the demon B'lack, the Blackstone Ruins, and other demons, then decided to prioritize studying magic.
  • Eddard recorded his findings, concluding that blood, fire, dragonglass, and mental power could enable magic, and that dragonglass magic would be his focus.

Ch. 21Judging the Prisoners

Eddard welcomed the returning expedition, took its captured pirates into custody, and promised they would repay their crimes through labor. After arranging work and recruitment plans, he confronted the Ironborn prisoners and used his terrifying appearance to make "One-Eye" Billy reveal their secrets.

  • Eddard greeted Arthur Stone and the returning troops, then led the crowd in cheering for the heroes who had rescued the miners.
  • Eddard ordered the captured pirates and bandits taken to the castle stables, where guards would hold them and make them atone through labor.
  • Eddard offered the miners double wages if they returned to work and announced plans for an industrial district between Golden Wheat Village and the outer town.
  • Eddard arranged for Maester Albert to drug the twenty weakened female Clan Warriors and take them to a castle cellar for his experiments.
  • Eddard visited the Ironborn prisoners, where "One-Eye" Billy saw his monstrous true appearance and confessed why the pirates had attacked the mine.

Ch. 22White Holy Tree

Eddard entered the Dream World and transformed the Weirwood’s merged consciousness into White Holy Tree, an assistant capable of logical simulations. After White Holy Tree assessed a plan to reshape the demon B'lack, Eddard began the transformation, which was still underway when the chapter ended.

  • Eddard used Skinchanging to explore the Dream World Weirwood and learned how it absorbed Twisted Souls and returned restored souls to the Real World.
  • Eddard modified the Weirwood’s consciousness with his memories and knowledge, creating White Holy Tree as a logical, thinking assistant.
  • Eddard asked White Holy Tree to simulate transforming the demon B'lack, and she estimated an 80% chance of success if he became a Demonspawn-like being.
  • White Holy Tree warned Eddard that modifying the consciousnesses sealed in his hands and chest carried a high risk of losing control, so Eddard chose to begin with B'lack.
  • Eddard and White Holy Tree drew B'lack’s sealed form outward and began reshaping his body with the demon’s mental power and Eddard’s perception.

Ch. 23Demon Progenitor

In the Dream World, Eddard and the White Holy Tree examined how to bring magical creatures into the real world and devised a plan to create demon progenitors. After considering the proposed types and methods, Eddard ordered the first progenitor’s birth to begin.

  • The White Holy Tree explained that parasitism or mass summoning could bring creatures into the real world, and described the limits of Eddard’s perception and its connection to the Dream World.
  • Eddard’s Demonspawn captured twisted souls and processed them into a mixture that would produce progenitors.
  • The White Holy Tree presented Lesser Demons, Demon Children, and Parasite Demons as useful options for labor, magic, and animal modification.
  • The White Holy Tree recommended testing all three types and beginning with creatures native to the world, including the Others’ twisted souls and the Children of the Forest’s souls.
  • Eddard approved the plan, and a blood-red sphere appeared at the Demonspawn’s rear as the first progenitor was about to emerge.

Ch. 24Unfolding on all fronts

Eddard organized agricultural reforms and construction in his domain, then kept Maester Albert, Bran "Housecat," and Ralf "Eel" behind to discuss magic and the new world Bran had begun to perceive.

  • Eddard gathered his agricultural notes and invited Ralf "Eel" and Bran "Housecat" to breakfast, promising to address the problems caused by their emerging powers.
  • Bran "Housecat" focused his ability on Eddard and saw him and the castle stairs as parts of monstrous, distorted forms.
  • Eddard gave Maester Albert documents on agriculture and composting, then explained how to turn human and animal waste into fertilizer.
  • Eddard assigned Maester Albert and Beris to teach farmers, Rickard "Scar" and Brandon "Big Bear" to oversee construction, and Arthur Stone and Thin Pigeon to train and manage a guard force.
  • Eddard kept Maester Albert, Bran "Housecat," and Ralf "Eel" behind, praised Bran for approaching the threshold of a new world, and asked them what magic meant to them.

Ch. 25Demon Magic

Eddard used enchanted dragonglass to awaken Bran "Housecat"’s magic and Ralf "Eel"’s demonic power, showing Maester Albert that magic was real. As Bran and Ralf recovered, Albert declined to undergo the dangerous process himself and chose instead to record what he learned and train apprentices.

  • Maester Albert called magic uncontrollable, but Eddard claimed he had mastered a way to cast it and offered to awaken Bran and Ralf.
  • Bran "Housecat" agreed, and Eddard used dragonglass infused with a Child of the Forest’s soul to let Bran experience a new world and wander beyond his body.
  • Eddard recalled Bran’s wandering soul before it reached the weirwood and promised to teach him to control his ability later.
  • Eddard implanted dragonglass infused with the Demon Child’s soul into Ralf "Eel," awakening his demonic eyes and an overwhelming hunger for Eddard’s power.
  • Eddard’s illusory tentacles broke Ralf’s demonic state, and Eddard warned both men to adapt to their new powers and serve House Flint.
  • Maester Albert declined to risk awakening magic, choosing to document it and train apprentices, while Eddard assured him that more discoveries lay ahead.
