Public Annulment

Nalan Yanran visited the Xiao Clan with Ge Ye and Liu Ling to end her engagement. Xiao Baichuan initially expected her fiancé to be Xiao Yan, but Xiao Zhan revealed that the marriage agreement concerned Baichuan himself. When Yanran first looked at Baichuan, his exceptional appearance caught her attention so completely that she briefly forgot to look away 6.

Ling Xi then took control of Baichuan’s body. Her cold, commanding presence left Yanran unable to voice her request and instinctively wanting to shake her head when asked whether she wished to cancel the engagement. Acting in Baichuan’s name, Ling Xi agreed to the annulment, wrote “dissolved” across the marriage contract, and placed it in Yanran’s hands before leaving 7.

Although Yanran had achieved her purpose, she felt empty rather than relieved. Baichuan’s apparent indifference troubled her: she repeatedly recalled his departing figure and the eyes that seemed to regard her as beneath his notice 7.

Rumors and Regret

By the following day, Wutan City’s gossip had transformed the annulment into a fabricated story that Yanran had pursued Baichuan and tried to entice him away with a fortune. Hearing these rumors, Liu Ling decided to confront Baichuan. Yanran remained silent, staring at the dissolved contract, while Ge Ye was asked to escort her back 9 10.

At the Misty Cloud Sect, Yanran told Yun Yun that the engagement had ended. Asked whether she regretted it, she denied doing so and claimed that the process had merely gone too smoothly. Her distraction and lack of relief nevertheless drew her master’s attention 14.

When Ge Ye reported Liu Ling’s challenge against Baichuan, Yanran initially misunderstood which man had been injured. Believing Baichuan had been severely wounded, she angrily condemned Liu Ling for exploiting his higher cultivation and immediately wanted to visit the Xiao Clan. Ge Ye clarified that Baichuan had instead defeated Liu Ling with one hand, even after Liu Ling unleashed his full Five-Star Dou Zhe strength 14.

Learning the outcome brought Yanran deep regret over rejecting the marriage. Yun Yun decided to visit the Xiao Clan and recruit Baichuan, partly to help her disciple; Yanran responded with visible relief and gratitude 14.

Return to the Xiao Clan

Yanran accompanied Yun Yun on the recruitment visit. She stood respectfully beside her master and brightened immediately when Baichuan entered. His confirmed advancement from Eighth Stage Dou Qi to Dou Zhe surprised her and heightened her interest 22.

Yanran expected Baichuan to accept when Yun Yun extended the invitation to include his teacher. His firm refusal left her disappointed. She departed with Yun Yun, downcast and silent; no reconciliation or renewed engagement occurred during the visit 23.

Personality

Yanran is described as ordinarily arrogant, but she behaves obediently and respectfully in Yun Yun’s presence. She also tries to conceal uncomfortable emotions, composing herself before reporting the annulment and initially denying her regret when her master questions her 14 22.

Her reaction to Baichuan changes from fascination with his looks to distress over his apparent indifference and concern for his safety. Her immediate anger at Liu Ling’s supposed mistreatment of him reveals feelings she had not openly admitted; learning of Baichuan’s unexpected ability then makes her regret explicit 6 7 14.

Relationships

• Xiao Baichuan — Former fiancé and subsequent romantic interest. She sought the annulment herself, but later hoped his recruitment into the Misty Cloud Sect would bring him closer again 6 7 14 23.
• Yun Yun — Master and sect leader. She recognizes Yanran’s attachment to Baichuan and offers an opportunity for renewed contact without forcing him to accept 14 23.
• Ge Ye — Sect representative who requested the annulment on the visiting party’s behalf. He later conveyed the news of Liu Ling’s defeat 6 14.
• Liu Ling — Accompanied her to the Xiao Clan and independently challenged Baichuan to defend her reputation and win her favor. Yanran’s concern after the duel was for Baichuan, not Liu Ling 10 11 14.
