Fear of the dark was an instinct humans were born with.
Before the advent of light, humanity's ancestors had to remain vigilant against all kinds of powerful predators. These predators were especially active at night, so to humanity's ancestors, night meant danger.
Or perhaps all those who did not fear the night had died, leaving only those who did—and their descendants.
"The brave sacrificed themselves, while the cowards left behind descendants. Ironic, isn't it?"
They sought advantage and avoided harm, and what remained was a group of cowards.
And humanity was the descendant of a group of cowards.
Perhaps those cowardly genes had remained ever since humans had still been a bunch of rats.
Generation after generation of cowards had not dared to face the night, causing their night vision to grow worse and worse. Their descendants then became even less willing to face the night.
Instead, it was the weak creatures that dared to confront the night.
Though their ends were not much better...
But who could say that being a coward was a bad thing?
There had never been right or wrong in the evolution of life. Cowardice was also a choice.
Humanity chose light and forsook darkness. Even though technology had advanced to the point where darkness could be driven away, those cowardly genes still exerted their influence, bringing humans unnecessary panic.
Avoiding darkness had once brought safety, but now it could only bring fear.
What had once been an advantage had become a burden.
The price had begun to show itself.
And so, the cowards of today began praising those brave ones who feared no darkness, forgetting that the brave had long since been eliminated by "Darwin," dying in the shadows of history without even bones left behind...
