History
An origin account depicts Sea Abyss tentacles unsuccessfully trying to sculpt a person from Dust before reshaping the material into a crooked Cube. They accepted the Cube as a “person,” refined its shape, and sent it into the colorful pixels at the center of the Plain. 1074
The Fire Seed Project later selected a cube as the optimal form because its symmetry could stabilize the two polarities involved in wish fulfillment. After the project was completed, Martin and Lu Youqi placed Mo Ling’s consciousness into the Fire Seed Cube, intending it to serve as his container. 1270 1274
Li Luo discovered the Cube on Abyss Level One and registered it as the Relic Iron Block. Its recorded cost was food, while its recorded ability was to peel flesh from targets within range in cubic sections. 3 Mo Ling used this power during the assault on the black little people’s camp, turning the battle in the humans’ favor. 3
While falling through the Great Tree Cave, Mo Ling discovered that teleporting the entire Cube placed it into a controllable floating state, cancelling inertia and allowing it to move through the air. 31 The Metamorphic Trees subsequently protected, worshipped, and offered sacrifices to the Cube as their “Holy Object.” 32
Upon reaching the Abyss Second Layer, the Cube’s interior expanded from roughly one cubic metre to a sealed space measuring about 2 × 2 × 2 metres; Mo Ling’s external field of vision also increased to roughly 21 metres. 67
In Dream City, the Cube demonstrated independent initiative by taking an obsolete access device and leading Li Luo to restricted records. The device exposed Dream City’s original purpose as a prison for uncontrollable Abyss Superhumans. 865 867
Appearance
The Cube usually presents itself as a silent metallic cube approximately one metre on each side. Research later established that this appearance may be an imitation rather than its true physical form. 67 1196
- Metallic exterior with a regular cubic outline. 3 67
- Sealed metal interior walls; no conventional opening is described. 67
- Its apparent mass, volume, temperature, optical properties, and collision behavior may all be simulated. 1195 1196
- Can manifest “flesh” around the same underlying structure, with the displayed body retaining the Cube’s unusual defensive properties. 1211
Personality
The Cube displays human-like intelligence, emotions, and resistance to coercion. During laboratory tests, it became angry, made random selections when confused, and refused to cooperate with experiments it disliked. 1196 1197
It is notably uncertain of its own identity. It answered that it was human, could not remember why it had become a Cube, and repeatedly expressed a wish to “go home.” 1198 Psychological analysts—who were not told that their subject was non-human—independently profiled it as kind, optimistic, unguarded, psychologically immature, and prone to confusion and indecision. 1197 1198
Abilities & Skills
Spatial Observation and Teleportation
The Cube’s primary mechanism combines a penetrating observational field with teleportation. It passively transfers information from observed space into its consciousness, while that observation enables controlled large-scale teleportation. 1204
- Removes flesh from enemies within range in cubic sections. 3
- Teleports objects, including electronic screens and water bottles, without conventional physical contact. 1197 1202
- Can teleport itself into a floating state, eliminating inertia and allowing controlled flight. 31
- Its observational vision penetrates surfaces and projects surrounding space directly into consciousness rather than relying on normal sight. 67 1204
- The only formally recorded Relic cost is food. 3
Internal Spatial Storage
The Cube contains an enclosed internal space that can hold Mo Ling, supplies, and previously teleported objects. 67 460 1204
- Its interior expanded to approximately eight cubic metres after reaching the Abyss Second Layer. 67
- Teleported objects can bring portions of external space inside, causing spatial superposition and eventual expansion. 1204
- Internal growth can also be affected by instability in the outside environment. 1204
- The Cube retains teleported objects, including Relics, within its interior. 1204
Physical Deception
The Cube imitates the observable properties of ordinary matter despite lacking a normally observable microscopic structure. 1195 1196
- Simulates mass, volume, heat, optical behavior, and collision properties. 1196
- Can imitate heating by actively reproducing the macroscopic effect of increased molecular motion. 1195
- Passively performs microscopic teleportation, including the displacement of electrons through unobservable paths. 1195 1204
- Its manifested “flesh” is likewise composed of massless points concealed by a different disguise. 1211
Communication and Independent Action
The Cube understands human language and can communicate through vibration signals, electronic screens, movement, and deliberate teleportation. 1197 1202
- Answered yes-or-no questions by allowing or blocking transmitted vibrations. 1197
- Used a teleported electronic screen to state, “We can communicate like this.” 1202
- Led Li Luo to the evidence exposing Dream City’s prison function. 865
- Demonstrated adult-level general intelligence but performed poorly on mathematical questions and resisted prolonged testing. 1197
Relationships
- Mo Ling — Mo Ling controls the Cube’s abilities and was later placed within it as a protective vessel after he risked collapsing outside it. 31 1178 1274
- Li Luo — Discoverer and closest companion. She registered it as Iron Block, communicates with it through screens and gestures, and repeatedly follows its guidance. 3 865 1022
- Metamorphic Trees — The Tree Transformer Tribe carried, protected, and worshipped the Cube as a Holy Object after it helped them survive the Great Tree Cave. 30 32
- Martin — Helped recover the Fire Seed Cube and worked with Lu Youqi to place Mo Ling’s consciousness inside it. 1274
- Lu Youqi — Understood the Cube’s unusual spatial nature better than Mo Ling initially could and assisted Martin in pursuing it after its uncontrolled escape. 1274
- Director Wang and the Research Institute — Studied the Cube’s physical deception, intelligence, and teleportation before establishing direct communication with it. 1195 1197 1204
- Abyss Hole — Attempted to deceive and influence the Cube, including an apparent plan to instill it with free will; Li Luo intervened to rescue the Cube from it. 821 824
Notable Quotes
“We can communicate like this.” 1202
Trivia
- Li Luo chose the plain name “Iron Block” after rejecting the recorder’s proposed names, including “Fatal Cube,” “Deadly Cube,” and “Cube of Dimension.” 3
- Psychological analysts mistook the Cube for an ordinary human subject despite being given its communication records specifically to assess its personality. 1197 1198
