Background / History

Academy and First Friendships

Kakashi enters the Academy as an aloof prodigy who prefers training alone. He sees through Chen’s innocent performance after Uchiha Inabi’s suspicious fall, recognizing that Chen’s movements and timing are too precise to be accidental 29 30.

He initially rejects Chen’s invitation to practice together. Chen instead establishes a persistent presence around his training grounds and points out a fundamental flaw in how he generates force while swinging a sword. Their subsequent exchanges persuade Kakashi to accept him as a training partner and teach him swordsmanship fundamentals 32 33 34.

Might Guy soon joins their circle through repeated challenges. Although Kakashi finds Guy exhausting, their company gradually softens his isolation. Sakumo welcomes the change, noting that Chen is the first friend Kakashi has mentioned voluntarily 34 35 36.

Sakumo’s Apparent Death

After Sakumo abandons an important mission to save his subordinates, village rumors turn against the Hatake family. Kakashi is mocked at school as a “sinner’s son,” including by Inabi. Chen defends Sakumo as a hero, helping Kakashi resist the humiliation and doubt surrounding his father 37 40.

Sakumo subsequently fakes his death with help from Chen and Orochimaru, leaving Kakashi unaware of the deception. After the funeral, Kakashi withdraws from almost everyone except Chen and Guy and trains to the point of physical exhaustion 42 43 44.

His grief hardens into an obsession with proving himself through rules and effort. Minato’s Student and Wartime Losses

Kakashi graduates at eight and becomes a genin under Minato. Chen celebrates his graduation with him and Guy at Ichiraku Ramen 120 136.

During the war, Kakashi prioritizes the mission over rescuing Rin. Obito nevertheless returns to save him, is crushed by a boulder, and gives Kakashi his Sharingan. Believing Obito dead, Kakashi blames himself despite Minato’s insistence that he is not responsible 220 221.

Kakashi later learns from Shisui that Rin was abducted, made the Three-Tails’ jinchūriki, and killed in an explosion. He searches the scorched cavern without knowing that Chen rescued her and that evidence of her death was fabricated 313 322 622.

Anbu Service and Protecting Naruto

After Minato becomes Hokage, Kakashi joins the reorganized Anbu under his direct command. He also guards access to Minato’s residence, where he receives Shisui’s request for help against Root’s investigation of the Uchiha and vouches for Shisui’s peaceful intentions 331 388.

Minato and Kushina’s deaths leave Kakashi deeply despondent. Chen gives him responsibility for protecting Naruto, framing it as both a mission and a way to repay his teacher. Kakashi accepts and lives in the Uchiha Clan Compound, where Fugaku and Mikoto raise Naruto 434 440 472 566.

Reunion with Sakumo

Father and son reunite at the experimental base after more than a decade apart. Sakumo apologizes for leaving Kakashi to endure loneliness and self-blame; Kakashi embraces him and declares that he has always been his hero. Both then enter Chen’s advanced training program 591 592.

Advanced Training and Rin’s Return

Despite greatly increased chakra from Tailed Beast cells, Kakashi initially remains far below Sakumo in practical combat. Sakumo redirects his training toward basic swordsmanship and taijutsu, teaching him to eliminate wasted movement rather than rely on overwhelming ninjutsu 598 599.

During an assessment against Kisame and the masked examiner “Rin,” Kakashi notices that her attacks seem designed to spare him. Her inability to harm him, even under the Three-Tails’ influence, strengthens his suspicion. She eventually removes her mask and confirms her identity 615 618 621.

Rin explains that Chen rescued her and helped her control the Three-Tails. Kakashi apologizes for misunderstanding her and asks her to return to Konoha. When she refuses until she can return openly without endangering the village, he accepts her decision 622 623.

Chen renews Kakashi’s responsibility for Naruto and urges him to become someone who can fight beside him rather than merely follow him. Kakashi leaves with renewed purpose. His father’s apparent suicide turns discipline into a means of proving his worth. Repeated losses deepen his tendency toward isolation and self-blame: he calls himself scum over Obito’s presumed death and later treats the deaths of those close to him as evidence that he brings misfortune 45 221 592.

His reserve does not prevent quiet loyalty. He takes notes for Chen, firmly supports Minato as Hokage, and accepts years of responsibility for Naruto. He also develops a dry, sharp tongue, particularly when responding to Chen 99 307 440 566.
