Personality

Orochimaru’s central ambitions are knowledge and immortality. He regards an ordinary human lifespan as insufficient to master every technique and uncover every truth, eventually defending the sacrifice of others as worthwhile for that goal 68 326.

His early political aspirations coexist with a practical interest in Konoha’s strength. He cautions Chen against allowing Senju–Uchiha grievances to divide the village, emphasizing the Uchiha’s importance in wartime. Later, however, he refuses to consider abandoning his experiments even if doing so would secure the Hokage position 59 294.

He is perceptive about manipulation but overconfident about his own prospects. He recognizes Danzō’s attempts to use him and accurately explains the campaign that forces Hiruzen’s resignation, yet assumes that his seniority, achievements, and strength make him the inevitable Fourth Hokage 31 294.

History

Recruitment of Senju Chen

Danzō first draws Orochimaru’s attention to Chen while Orochimaru is struggling with Hashirama-cell experiments. Every existing test subject has died, making a child who naturally possesses Wood Release an exceptionally valuable prospect 31.

After secretly observing Chen’s activities around the Hatake family, Orochimaru confronts him in his bedroom. Chen offers blood in exchange for assistance staging Hatake Sakumo’s death and hiding him from Konoha. Delighted by the plan’s ambition, Orochimaru demands that Chen become his disciple and agrees to help obtain a suitable substitute corpse 38 39.

Chen subsequently supplies blood, and Orochimaru reports successful preliminary activation of the material in a culture medium. Their exchange expands when Chen proposes combining Wood Release and the Sharingan, receiving an advanced chakra-theory scroll in return 45 50 59 60.

Official Mentorship

Chen persuades Tsunade to recommend Orochimaru as his instructor, publicly citing his expertise in ninjutsu research and Wood Release development. Privately, Chen wants freedom, laboratory access, and a discreet intermediary to Sakumo. Hiruzen approves the appointment 68.

Orochimaru registers Chen as a genin and later introduces Shisui Uchiha as his teammate. Hokage Ambitions and Defection

Following Hiruzen’s resignation, Orochimaru considers himself the obvious successor. Chen warns that his research could become an obstacle, but Orochimaru believes the village will accept his methods once he strengthens Konoha and conquers death 289 294.

Danzō exposes evidence of Orochimaru’s experiments, including the use of Konoha shinobi. Hiruzen confronts him in his laboratory, where Orochimaru rejects the Will of Fire, attacks with Hidden Shadow Snake Hands, and escapes by dispersing into small snakes 325 326.

Chen maintains contact after the defection. He locates Orochimaru’s nearby hideout and supplies forbidden research, including the Spirit Transformation Technique. Orochimaru’s removal also ends his candidacy for Fourth Hokage, leaving Danzō and Minato as the principal contenders 326 327 328 450.

Research Partnership with Chen
