Background / History
Life as a Jinchūriki
Kushina came to Konoha and had been the Nine-Tails’ jinchūriki for years by the time she met Nobuhiko. She tells Kurama that she never wanted the role but considers it a fate she cannot change. Mito, whom she calls “Grandma Mito,” advised her to fill her life with true love so that she could live happily despite carrying the Nine-Tails 21 25.
Her position leaves her closely watched and largely confined to harmless D-rank missions within the village. With few friends and classmates departing for the battlefield, she becomes lonely and asks Tsunade to help her obtain more meaningful assignments 16 20 21.
Meeting Nobuhiko
Tsunade and the Third Hokage arrange for Kushina to befriend and spar with Nobuhiko, partly to discourage her from pursuing dangerous missions. His praise of her red hair—the first such compliment she has received from another child since coming to Konoha—immediately endears him to her, and she decides to treat him as her little brother 20 21.
Kushina wins their spar with sealing jutsu. Afterward, Tsunade points out that she needed her specialty to defeat a child under six and uses the fight to reinforce the dangers of outside missions. Kushina accepts staying in the village, reassured that training with Nobuhiko and teaching him sealing will relieve her boredom 22 23.
Reconciliation with Kurama
When Nobuhiko learns that Kushina is a jinchūriki, he calls her a village hero rather than someone to fear. His acceptance moves her to tears and opens a discussion about the suffering of both jinchūriki and the beasts sealed inside them 24.
Encouraged to consider the Nine-Tails’ feelings, Kushina asks his name and admits that she has overlooked his perspective. With Tsunade and Nobuhiko’s support, she allows him temporary control of her body to meet Nobuhiko. He reveals his name as Kurama, marking their first substantial step toward reconciliation 25 26.
Their relationship remains contentious, but Kushina gradually becomes more considerate of him. Nobuhiko encourages her to talk with him, seek his advice, and improve his living conditions; the sealed space is later shown to have become more comfortable 37 38 48.
Training and Separation
During Tsunade’s battlefield deployment, Kushina takes responsibility for Nobuhiko and teaches him sealing jutsu. Although she dislikes studying, she discovers that explaining techniques to him gives her a strong sense of accomplishment 29 30 31.
After Dan Katō’s death, Kushina and Nobuhiko accompany the grieving Tsunade home. She supports Tsunade’s decision to travel but becomes distressed when she realizes Nobuhiko will leave too. Unable to accompany them under the village’s restrictions, she resolves to grow stronger so that she can eventually join them 43 46 47.
Before their departure, Kushina gives Nobuhiko four sealing-jutsu scrolls. They agree to avoid a formal farewell: his failure to visit will signal that he has left. Afterward, she asks Kurama how soon she can withstand his full power; he estimates that she must reach seventeen or eighteen. This remains a future prospect, not an achieved transformation 48 50.
Appearance
- Red hair: Described as a vibrant cascade; it flutters without wind when she becomes angry 22 26.
- Youthful features: Introduced as a cute, beautiful girl who looks quite young 16.
- Kurama’s temporary possession: Her eyes redden and six faint whisker marks appear on her face 26.
- Chakra-cloak transformation: Develops red slit pupils, whiskers, sharpened teeth and nails, and a red, foxlike chakra covering 41.
Personality
Kushina is lively, affectionate, and quick to establish sibling-like bonds. She enjoys teasing Tsunade, responds warmly to Nobuhiko’s compliments, and takes her responsibility as his older sister seriously. When Tsunade entrusts him to her, she promises not to let anyone bully him 16 21 29.
Her temper rises quickly when she feels deceived or treated unfairly, but she is also forgiving. After Nobuhiko pretends to be unconscious, she angrily demands an explanation, then laughs at his claim that being carried by a pretty girl embarrassed him. She forgives him while insisting that he not lie to her again 22.
She dislikes studying but enjoys teaching and receiving praise. Nobuhiko’s enthusiasm for learning initially bewilders her; successfully answering his sealing-jutsu questions changes her attitude toward her own education 29 30.
Kushina is trusting enough for Nobuhiko to repeatedly mislead her about his loyalty to the Third Hokage. She nevertheless begins noticing contradictions in his behavior and decides to investigate through observation. Later, she openly acknowledges her difficulty keeping secrets and accepts that he and Tsunade should withhold dangerous information until they are stronger 31 40 47.
Abilities & Skills
Sealing Jutsu
Kushina’s principal specialty is sealing rather than conventional ninjutsu. She can explain the distinction between techniques that restrict individuals or objects and barriers that protect or isolate spaces 21 30.
- Self-Exerting Curse Binding Seal: Produces bandlike markings that spread across the target’s body, sealing movement by restricting chakra flow. She uses it to defeat Nobuhiko 22 23 30.
- One-String Light Formation: Immobilizes a target standing at the center of a formation. It was her first sealing technique and the foundation she chooses for Nobuhiko’s instruction 30.
- Four Symbols Seal: An advanced seal containing a sealing space; Kushina identifies it as the seal on her own body 30.
- Instruction: Teaches Nobuhiko three sealing techniques during their month of training together 31.
Wind and Water Release
Kushina uses both chakra natures defensively during her spar with Nobuhiko, although the Third Hokage considers conventional ninjutsu weaker than her sealing specialty 21.
- Wind Release: Great Breakthrough: Redirects her descent in midair to evade Nobuhiko’s Water Trumpet 21.
- Water-wall defense: Raises a wall several meters high to intercept his Water Dragon Bullet 21.
- Hand-seal speed: Completes three seals in less than a second, though Tsunade notes that Nobuhiko’s simplified sequences let him cast more unexpectedly 21 23.
Taijutsu
Kushina combines blocks, kicks, evasions, and throws. Her greater height and reach give her a clear advantage over Nobuhiko in their initial close-range exchange 21.
- Catches his attacking arm and attempts to slam him into the ground 21.
- With Kurama’s chakra, adopts foxlike movement and claw attacks, exchanging rapid blows with the Third Hokage 41.
- Despite her enhanced speed and power, she cannot land a hit on the Third during their test 42.
Shadow Clone Technique
Kushina can create Shadow Clones, but using them as study aids proves unsuccessful 29.
- Her clones refuse to study and sometimes punch themselves to dispel, passing the pain back to her 29.
- Nobuhiko attributes their resistance to her own dislike of studying 29.
Jinchūriki Communication and Chakra Use
Kushina can enter her internal sealed space to speak with Kurama and can voluntarily yield control of her body to him 25 26 39.
- Can prevent Kurama from overhearing a private conversation 38.
- Retains conscious judgment through a two-tailed chakra cloak, despite heightened aggression 41.
- Her immature body limits sustained use. Kurama attributes her post-battle weakness to physical development rather than a permanent injury 42.
- Full access to Kurama’s power is projected for later adolescence; perfect jinchūriki status is not established in the documented chapters 47 50.
Possessions & Resources
- Inherited wealth: Receives the Uzumaki Clan assets left to her by Mito and readily offers to pay for barbecue 30.
- Sealing-jutsu collection: Keeps basic scrolls at home for Nobuhiko to borrow 28.
- Departure gifts: Gives Nobuhiko scrolls for the Four Symbols Seal, Contract Seal, Memory Seal, and Cursed Tongue Eradication Seal 48.
Relationships
- Kihara Nobuhiko — Adoptive little-brother figure, training partner, and sealing student. His acceptance of her jinchūriki identity helps her approach Kurama; both promise to become strong enough to protect the other 21 24 29 48.
- Tsunade — Older-sister figure whom she calls “Sister Tsunade.” Their affectionate relationship includes teasing and arguments, but Kushina supports her during her grief over Dan 16 26 27 43.
- Kurama — The Nine-Tails sealed within her. Their hostile exchanges gradually develop into cooperation, including voluntary chakra sharing, though her blunt remarks still provoke him 25 26 41 50.
- Mito Uzumaki — Deceased elder, adviser, and benefactor. Kushina misses her, remembers her guidance about love, and inherits her Uzumaki assets 25 30 37.
- Third Hokage — Oversees her protection and restricts dangerous missions, but also supervises her chakra test and spars with her. She familiarly calls him “old man Third” 20 40 41.
- Minato — An ordinary classmate at this point in the story, according to Nobuhiko’s recollection 21.
