| Starly | Before the story; recalled in 4 | Caught by Yushu on Route 201 and raised from a palm-sized bird. |
| Staraptor — Late Advanced Stage | 4 | His advancement had stalled because of chronic wing-tendon overload. The Eye of Detection recommended suspending recoil moves and increasing nut intake. |

Background / History
Yushu caught Staraptor as a Starly on Route 201 during his Sinnoh journey. By the time the team settled at the ranch, he had grown into a powerful aerial fighter, but prolonged training had overloaded his wing tendons and impeded his advancement. Yushu identified the injury with the Eye of Detection and ordered him to rest 4.
Staraptor initially interpreted Yushu’s announcement that he would stop being a Trainer as a warning that the team might be dismissed. Unlike his companions, who could imagine supporting themselves through milk production, electricity, or other specialties, he struggled to identify a useful role outside battling. Yushu’s promise that they would build a new life together at the ranch relieved him 5 6.
His first assignment was accompanying Yushu shopping rather than the important aerial mission he had imagined. He carried the purchases home in exchange for promised extra Berries, then collapsed from the effort. Later, he convinced the other Pokémon that ranch work was actually Yushu’s concealed training program, interpreting his own hauling duties as weighted-flight practice 7 8 9 10.
Appearance
- Large, imposing bird: Yushu describes him as majestic; a sweep of his wings produces enough wind to blow Yushu’s hair backward 4.
- Gray plumage and prominent crest: His gray silhouette is noted during the Flying Contest, while his raised crest visibly betrays alarm or agitation 8 124 195.
- Careful grooming: He preens on the ranch roof and considers looking handsome part of his standing as ruler of the local skies 41.
Personality
Staraptor is intensely competitive and reluctant to stop fighting. He is confused when ordered to rest, rushes to claim the opening battle against Ritchie, and refuses Yushu’s suggestion to switch him out against Sudowoodo despite the unfavorable matchup. Even after two consecutive battles have exhausted much of his stamina, he insists on continuing 4 20 21 22.
His bravado coexists with a strong need to feel useful. He eagerly anticipates an important ranch assignment, fears being abandoned when Yushu changes careers, and becomes jealous when Uxie receives an entire box of Pokéblocks. Praise and extra food are effective incentives: the prospect of becoming Yushu’s preferred delivery Pokémon drives him to practice Tailwind obsessively 5 7 16 42.
He is boastful, argumentative, and quick to tease rivals. He taunts the other Flying Contest finalists and goads Luxray into competing for herd leadership. Nevertheless, he usually obeys Yushu while grumbling, and his courage has limits: after loudly condemning Uxie’s food theft, he becomes conspicuously quiet when the Legendary Pokémon returns 16 41 125 167.
Abilities & Skills
Reckless and Recoil Attacks
Staraptor’s Ability is Reckless, which contributes to the power of his Brave Bird attacks 4 125.
- Brave Bird: His principal heavy attack, used against Murkrow, Hitmontop, Charizard Lisa, and Pidgeot 20 61 125 126.
- Heat Wave combination: Against Lisa, he draws the surrounding flames onto his Brave Bird charge, becoming a burning projectile rather than suffering the expected continuous damage 125.
- Physical limitation: Brave Bird inflicts recoil, and the Eye of Detection initially recommends suspending it because of his overloaded wing tendons 4 125.
Flight, Speed, and Airflow Control
Staraptor combines rapid acceleration with unusually precise aerial maneuvering 21 124.
- High-speed turns: Changes direction at the peak speed of a dive without slowing, allowing him to bypass Sudowoodo and strike from the side 21.
- Tailwind training: Improves from taking several seconds to create a short-lived field roughly a dozen meters across to rapidly deploying one covering several dozen meters 42.
- Continuous airflow: During the Flying Contest, Falkner suspects that Staraptor maintains a Tailwind-like state by continually controlling the air around his body, rather than repeatedly activating the move 124.
- Acrobatics: Rides the edge of Pidgeot’s Hurricane to accelerate and circle behind it 125.
- Environmental adaptability: Flies even more freely in the Distortion World, where the lack of normal gravity improves his agility 194.
Wind Attacks and Battlefield Control
His wind techniques serve both offensive and practical purposes 20 61 194.
- Hurricane: Suspends Hitmontop in midair, blows apart Lisa’s Flamethrower, and disorients Pidgeot 61 124 126.
- Air Slash: Launches repeated wind blades at Bibarel 22.
- Visibility control: Disperses Murkrow’s Haze by beating his wings 20.
- Cloud dispersal: Blows away negative-energy clouds in the Distortion World, inadvertently undoing Giratina’s work separating them for disposal 194 195.
Close-Quarters Combat
Despite being a Normal/Flying-type, Staraptor is proficient with Close Combat and teaches Fighting-type techniques to Combusken 167.
- Wings and talons: Uses both in rapid exchanges against Lucario 62.
- Counterattacking: Punishes Sudowoodo after evading Double-Edge and breaks free when Pidgeot’s Brave Bird drives him downward 21 126.
- Steel Wing: Deflects Aura Sphere and breaks through Pidgeot’s Air Slash 62 125.
- Limit: Lucario gains the advantage during their sustained Close Combat exchange, forcing Staraptor to retreat 62.
Evasion and Training
Staraptor develops his own exercises rather than relying entirely on Yushu’s instructions 19 42.
- Weighted catch drill: Repeatedly carries a large rock upward, drops it, and catches it before impact to train wing strength and dynamic vision 19.
- Double Team: Produces seven or eight copies to evade attacks, including Lisa’s Dragon Pulse 20 125.
- Luxray practice: Training with Luxray improves his speed enough to weave through repeated Aura Spheres; Staraptor also states that Luxray strikes him directly with Thunder during training 62 125.
Other Recorded Moves
- Quick Attack, Wing Attack, Aerial Ace, Double-Edge, Whirlwind 4.
- Feather Dance, Roost, Final Gambit 54.
Health & Care
| Issue / Support | Details |
|---|---|
| Wing-tendon overload | Initially restricts his advancement. Recommended care includes avoiding recoil moves and eating more nuts for high-quality fatty acids 4. |
| High-energy diet | Yushu supplies high-sugar Berries, energy supplements, and metabolism-supporting ingredients to improve explosive power and speed 42. |
| Recovery Pokéblocks | A Pokéblock visibly restores his energy after the battle with Lucario, persuading Maylene to order a two-month supply 62. |
| Battle fatigue | Against Bibarel, accumulated exhaustion and waterlogged feathers reduce his speed and reactions 22. |
Story Role / Major Arcs
Ranch Life
- Food-theft dispute: Wrongly suspected of eating missing Pokéblocks, Staraptor insists on his innocence. He later confronts Uxie over the stolen food, only to discover the enormous difference in their strength 14 15 16.
- Ralts’s arrival: Approaches the unfamiliar newcomer and is scolded by Yushu, then obediently gathers the team for introductions while protesting his treatment 41.
- Torchic’s arrival: Initially dismisses the newcomer as weak, but later enjoys watching its energetic antics disrupt the ranch 94 96.
- Herd-leadership contest: Attempts to control Mareep and Skiddo with a restrained Hurricane and a threatening dive. The animals mistake him for a predator and flee; repeatedly catching them only worsens the panic. Luxray succeeds where he fails 167 168.
Major Battles and Competitions
| Opponent / Event | Result and significance |
|---|---|
| Ritchie’s Murkrow | Overpowers Night Slash with Brave Bird and sends Murkrow falling from the sky 20. |
| Ritchie’s Sudowoodo | Refuses substitution, evades Double-Edge with a sharp turn, and lands a full Close Combat combination 21. |
| Ritchie’s Bibarel | Fights despite accumulated fatigue. Their final Brave Bird–Aqua Tail collision leaves both down; Staraptor briefly tries to rise before collapsing again 22. |
| Maylene’s Hitmontop | Wins by using Hurricane to immobilize Hitmontop in midair before finishing it with Brave Bird 61. |
| Maylene’s Lucario | Trades close-range attacks and uses a retreat to set up a Brave Bird counter. Yushu ends the match without requiring a knockout after learning enough to customize Maylene’s Pokéblocks 62. |
| Kiko’s Charizard Lisa | Seizes the ring ahead of Lisa and advances after a Brave Bird attack incorporating her Heat Wave 124 125. |
| Flying Contest final | Temporarily cooperates with Pidgeot to stop Silver’s Murkrow, then overcomes Pidgeot’s pressure with Close Combat and Hurricane. Places the ring on the hook to secure Yushu’s victory 126. |
Rescue and Distortion World Expedition
- Wailord emergency: Helps rescue passengers thrown into the sea. His carrying strength impresses a passenger and makes him reconsider the value of his daily weighted flights 116.
- Distortion World: Carries Yushu during the search for an exit after clearing nearby black clouds with Hurricane 194.
- Giratina’s complaint: Freezes in fear when Giratina demands to know who scattered the clouds it had painstakingly separated 195.
Relationships
- Yushu — Trainer since his capture as a Starly. Staraptor seeks his approval and reassurance, though their exchanges frequently involve complaints, teasing, and reluctant obedience 4 6 7 194.
- Luxray — Teammate, training partner, and rival. Their speed-and-electricity practice strengthens Staraptor’s evasive abilities; Luxray later defeats him in the competition to manage the herds 42 62 125 167 168.
- Uxie — Initially a food thief in Staraptor’s eyes. His indignation turns into intimidation and jealousy after he recognizes Uxie’s power and sees Yushu’s generous treatment of it 15 16.
- Combusken — Student in Fighting-type techniques; learns Close Combat from Staraptor 167.
- Torterra — Longtime teammate who reminds him to treat newcomers kindly when he belittles Torchic 94.
- Falkner’s Pidgeot — Flying Contest rival and temporary ally against Murkrow. Their final aerial duel ends with Staraptor securing the winning ring 125 126.
