Background / History
Previous Life and Return to Solaceon Town
Yushu’s previous life was that of an ordinary office worker who dreamed of winning the lottery, retiring early, and living somewhere scenic. Those memories suddenly surface when he is eighteen. He regards his earlier life as a Trainer almost like a film he has watched: its memories remain, but he no longer shares its consuming ambitions 1 2 3.
Before this change, Yushu had traveled as a Trainer and competed in a League Conference, only to be eliminated in the first round. Gardenia’s Turtwig had also defeated three of his Pokémon in an earlier Gym battle 21 55. He decides to stop challenging Gyms and revive his family’s abandoned ranch instead 1 2.
The ranch had belonged to his grandfather’s generation. After his grandfather died, Qingmu moved to Hearthome City and became a freight company’s regional manager, while Anna ran a flower shop there. Mayor Zongping maintained the property during its disuse, with Qingmu paying an annual maintenance fee 1 3.
Establishing Freewill Ranch
Yushu begins by examining his six Pokémon and recognizing the accumulated damage from their training and travels. He shifts their daily work toward ranch tasks: clearing debris, tilling soil, mowing weeds, inspecting the grounds, and controlling pests 4 7. His Pokémon notice that he has become more attentive to their health and less obsessed with training 10.
His first commercial successes come from food production. Kaixin places a standing order for his Pokéblocks, while Kurokawa agrees to buy his Miltank-milk cheese at ten percent above market price. Vespiquen’s Honey becomes another product, selling to Kurokawa for five hundred Alliance Currency per jin 13 17 35.
After hiring Aili and Shuren, Yushu can leave the ranch in their care. When he returns from a month away, he rewards each with ten thousand Alliance Currency and three days of paid leave 37 55.
Iron Island and Renewed Training
Riley invites Yushu to explore Iron Island because he considers him a levelheaded, capable partner. There, Yushu battles territorial wild Pokémon, finds Mega Stones for Steelix and Metagross, and encounters Team Galactic commander Mars 33 43 47 49.
Mars’s strength exposes the limits of his team. Although Vespiquen and the Combee can contest her Purugly, Yushu concludes that he cannot rely on Uxie to rescue him whenever a powerful opponent appears. He remains on Iron Island for a full month of intensive combat training 49 50 53 54.
Breeder Qualification and Evolution Research
In Jubilife City, Yushu studies for the breeder examination and becomes acquainted with Cynthia, Flint, Lucian, and Volkner. He defeats Flint in an exhibition battle conducted without Flint’s main Pokémon, then earns his beginner breeder qualification 64 68 77 89 93.
Cynthia gives him the exceptionally gifted Shiny Torchic won through her bet with Flint. During their farewell, Yushu commits to expanding his ranch and pursuing intermediate or advanced breeder qualifications rather than returning to full-time League competition 93.
His research on Sylveon brings him to Professor Rowan, who accepts him as an apprentice. Under Rowan’s supervision, Yushu refines and publishes a paper describing Sylveon and its evolution conditions. Rowan’s endorsement changes public reception of the work, and Yushu’s discovery becomes known as far away as Kalos 99 101 159.
Johto Business Trip
Yushu travels to Johto to acquire Pokémon for the ranch, also delivering Chimchar, Turtwig, and Piplup to Professor Elm on Rowan’s behalf 105 106 118. Along the way, he helps fight pirates with Norman, demonstrates his swarm-based power amplification, and later befriends Gold 113 115 144 145.
In Azalea Town, he trades a natural Metal Coat to Bugsy for twenty Shuckle after demonstrating the value of their Berry Juice in Pokéblock production 135. At Goldenrod City’s ranch exchange, Whitney helps him make business contacts. His purchases include Miltank, resistance Berry seedlings, and ten Skiddo from Ramos, bringing his expenditure above 1.3 million Alliance Currency 153 156 159.
Solaceon Ruins and Giratina
After returning to Sinnoh, Yushu expands production, hires Yicheng on probation, and develops high-grade resistance Pokéblocks 174 175 176. When Uxie warns that interference with the Solaceon Ruins’ Unown could summon Dialga and Palkia, he immediately investigates with Cynthia and Mew to protect the town and ranch 184.
He confronts Saturn and prepares Mega Gardevoir as a counter to the commander’s Toxicroak 187 189 190. Later, in the Distortion World, he negotiates a truce with Giratina, persuades Mew to apologize, and proposes Shaymin’s purification power as a solution to the polluted black clouds 199 200.
Yushu subsequently asks Giratina to compensate him for his work. He receives a Shadow Crystal and scales from Dialga and Palkia, with plans to use the crystal to strengthen Rotom 204.
Appearance
- Hands: Well-defined knuckles and thin calluses on his palms from years of handling Poké Balls 1.
- Face: Still retains a trace of childishness, contributing to Saturn’s initial dismissal of him as an inexperienced teenager 187.
- Clothing: Favors practical casual wear. At the ranch exchange, he wears a white T-shirt and dark gray casual trousers rather than formal clothing 155.
- Travel gear: Carries a lightweight spatial backpack 64.
Personality
Yushu values independence, steady income, and a comfortable pastoral life. Ranching begins as an alternative to an unsuccessful Trainer career, but becomes a profession he actively chooses. He explicitly treats ranching and breeding as his main work and battling as a hobby 3 93 128.
His care for Pokémon initially comes from responsibility rather than immediate emotional attachment. Discovering that his team is injured, he refuses to ignore their condition and adjusts their work and diets. Over time, his affection becomes unmistakable, particularly in his responses to Kirlia’s dependence and Gardevoir’s growth 9 10 53 151.
He frequently understates his abilities, describing himself as merely a rancher even when experienced Trainers recognize his strength. His private thoughts are considerably more mischievous than his polite manner suggests: he enjoys teasing, bargaining, and watching others misjudge him 21 58 77 132 135.
Despite abandoning competitive ambition, he still enjoys a good battle and accepts the need to become stronger. He prefers preparation and practical advantages over recklessness or sporting restraint against genuine enemies. His temper can also turn violent: after Taozhu ambushes him with a Pokémon, Yushu repeatedly punches him, then offers to pay his medical expenses 20 53 113 164 190.
Abilities & Skills
Eye of Detection
Yushu’s special ability displays information about Pokémon and certain items. He describes it as a single practical detection function rather than a broader system with a flashy interface 2 4.
- Pokémon assessment: Reveals species, type, Ability, level, moves, and current condition 2 4.
- Health diagnosis: Identifies embedded foreign objects, nutritional deficiencies, tendon damage, and prolonged stress, sometimes with treatment recommendations 2 4.
- Food formulation: Supplies multi-Berry recipes whose ingredients produce synergistic effects 9.
- Item identification: Recognizes Plate fragments, Mega Stones, and their functions 16 47 104.
- Disguise detection: Identifies Mew despite its Pidgey form 154.
- Limit: Does not always provide a readable level; Mew’s level appears as “???” 154.
Breeding, Nutrition, and Cooking
Yushu combines diagnostic information, recipe experimentation, and formal study to prepare food tailored to individual Pokémon 9 84 103 128.
- Produces commercially valuable Pokéblocks, cheese, and other ranch foods 13 17.
- Adjusts meals according to each Pokémon’s preferences 128.
- Uses Shuckle-brewed Berry Juice to improve Pokéblock quality and simplify preparation 135.
- Records flavor problems and recipe data rather than treating every batch as finished 174.
- Develops resistance formulas; one Lansat Berry recipe moderately reduces the power of Psychic-type moves 175.
Battle Strategy
Yushu draws on both inherited battle memories and Pokémon games from his previous life, while recognizing that real battles also depend on stamina, mental condition, and the environment 20.
- Swarm amplification: Coordinates Combee through Helping Hand, with Vespiquen gathering and transferring their boosts to a single combatant 115.
- Electric power stacking: Combines Electric Terrain, Charge, redirected electrical energy, and Wild Charge against Flint 78.
- Ability exploitation: Advises Heracross to activate Guts with a Flame Orb, using ranged pressure before committing to a decisive close-range attack 130.
- Matchup assessment: Uses detection data to identify weaknesses and select counters, including Gardevoir against Saturn’s Poison/Fighting-type Toxicroak 189.
Evolution Research
Yushu’s Sylveon paper documents its characteristics, type, Ability, preliminary capabilities, and evolution conditions, including the importance of a bond-triggering opportunity between Eevee and its Trainer 99.
- Refines his work under Professor Rowan’s supervision 101.
- Plans further research into Pokémon evolution 101.
- Earns recognition from Professor Elm and Ramos for his Eevee research 118 159.
Ranch Management
- Assigns Pokémon jobs suited to their capabilities, from Torterra’s tilling to Vespiquen’s pest patrols 7.
- Builds sales channels through Kaixin’s Day Care and Kurokawa’s shop 13 17 176.
- Delegates operations to employees and rewards successful independent work 37 55.
- Recruits additional labor, including Heracross for harvesting and sorting Berries 130 174.

- Cynthia — Friend and fellow apprentice of Professor Rowan, making her Yushu’s senior sister. Supports his career, gives him Torchic, and joins him in investigating the Solaceon Ruins. Yushu is visibly attracted to her, but the supplied passages establish friendship rather than a confirmed romance 93 101 105 184.
