Background / History

Creation of the Dragon Soul

During the ancient war against the demons, Neltharion persuaded the Dragon Aspects to create the Dragon Soul. The other four Aspects contributed their power, while he secretly withheld his own. After using the artifact against the demons, he turned it against the allied Dragonflights 23.

The other four Aspects subsequently placed a spell on the Dragon Soul that prevented Deathwing from using it. Because he had contributed none of his power, however, the artifact could not control him. His betrayal also led the other Dragonflights to hunt black dragons for ten thousand years 24 38.

Conflict with Dalaran

Deathwing helped the Orcish Death Knights seize the Eye of Dalaran. The Orcs later used the artifact to tear Draenor apart, before the Sons of Lothar returned it to Azeroth and closed the Dark Portal 31.

On Draenor, Khadgar and the king of the Gronn inflicted a severe defeat on Deathwing. Dalaran’s mages later ambushed him on Azeroth, but he escaped by feigning death. This deception left Rhonin, Vereesa, and Duncan believing that he had already been killed 10 13 33.

Manipulation of Rhonin

Deathwing reappeared while Rhonin was attempting to contact Krasus. He seized the mage from a fortified wall and demolished half the structure with his tail, injuring Aaron despite the Paladin’s defensive spells 10.

After Rhonin rejoined his companions, Deathwing captured him again during their aerial journey. He tore apart a riderless red dragon and escaped the pursuing gryphon riders by using clouds as cover 13 17.

Deathwing forced Rhonin to continue toward Grim Batol and helped him reach Nekros, the Dragonmaw Orcs’ warlock commander. He used Rhonin to deliver false information that the Alliance was about to attack, then abandoned him. Nekros subsequently beat and imprisoned the mage 27.

Aaron suspected that Deathwing wanted the Orcs to move Alexstrasza’s eggs outside, where he could steal them. This remained Aaron’s interpretation of the scheme rather than a confirmed outcome 22.

Defeat at Grim Batol

Deathwing had told Nekros about the Dragon Soul, enabling the warlock to capture Alexstrasza when she investigated its theft. Her captivity supplied the Orcs with their red dragon mounts 24.

At Grim Batol, Deathwing overwhelmed the weakened red dragon Taelan, then fought Ysera, Malygos, and Nozdormu. Even after Alexstrasza escaped Nekros’s control and joined them, the four Aspects could not gain the upper hand while part of their power remained trapped in the Dragon Soul 24.

Rhonin broke the artifact with a pendant made from Deathwing’s own scales and cast a spell to return its stored energy to the Aspects. The restored dragons overpowered Deathwing, but his terrible howl delayed their finishing blows long enough for him to escape. Ysera, Malygos, and Nozdormu pursued him 25.

Exposure of Lord Prestor

Deathwing also operated in Lordaeron under the identity of Lord Daval Prestor. Dalaran had detected traces of magic around the mysterious noble, but political distrust made an open investigation difficult 36 37.

After Prestor vanished without explanation, Terenas sent Uther and Kael’thas to investigate his residence. They found crushed courtyard paving, three abandoned Blackscale Dragonspawn, and a magically sealed room scarred by intense heat. Aaron interpreted the damage as evidence that Deathwing had revealed at least part of his dragon form and suffered an uncontrolled flare-up of his injuries 37 38 39.

The captured dragonkin’s interrogation and confirmation from the Kirin Tor established Prestor’s identity. Aaron also handed Uther Natalie Selin’s notebook as evidence and urged him to warn Stormwind against further deception under Prestor’s name 40.

Appearance

  • Dragon form: An immense black dragon, several times larger than the red dragon he kills during Rhonin’s second capture 17.
  • Armor: Full-body black metal plating and a distinctive iron jaw 10 17.
  • Internal glow: Red light flickers in his belly and shines through gaps in his armor 10 24.
  • Sulfurous presence: His approach brings a strong sulfur smell; his wingbeats can produce winds powerful enough to overturn tents 10.
  • Human disguise: As Daval Prestor, he appears as an eccentric middle-aged man 38.

Personality

Deathwing treats others as expendable instruments. He coerces and assists Rhonin only while the mage serves his plan, then leaves him exposed to Nekros’s brutality. His betrayal of the Dragonflights follows the same pattern: he encourages cooperation while secretly ensuring that he alone retains his full power 23 27.

He combines overwhelming force with calculated evasion. Rather than simply outrunning Aaron’s tireless gryphon, he repeatedly uses clouds to break pursuit. Earlier, he survives Dalaran’s ambush by convincing his enemies that he is dead 17 33.

His contempt for opponents is explicit when the weakened Taelan challenges him: “Taelan, you’re still alive?” 24.

Abilities & Skills

Physical Strength and Aerial Combat

Deathwing’s size and strength allow him to destroy fortifications and overpower other dragons 10 17.

  • Demolishes half a stone wall with one sweep of his tail 10.
  • Tears a red dragon apart in midair 17.
  • Outpaces pursuing gryphons and uses cloud cover to evade them 17.
  • Defeats Taelan and holds the advantage against four weakened Dragon Aspects 24.
  • Loses that advantage once the Aspects recover the power stored in the Dragon Soul 25.

Magical Craftsmanship

Deathwing personally forged the Dragon Soul, whose protections resist ordinary weapons 25.

  • A stone leaves the artifact unchanged, while an Orc battle-axe shatters against it 25.
  • His scale pendant provides the means to breach its defenses 25.
  • He uses the pendant to communicate remotely with Rhonin 23.

Transformation and Concealment

Deathwing maintains a human identity as Lord Daval Prestor, allowing him to operate within Lordaeron’s court 36 38.

  • Evades Dalaran’s scrutiny despite detectable traces of magic 37.
  • Leaves defensive enchantments on his residence, including a sealed room that takes Kael’thas considerable time to open 37 39.
  • His disguise does not prevent destructive physical or thermal traces from remaining behind 38 39.

Dragon Soul Immunity and Restrictions

  • Immunity: The Dragon Soul cannot control him because he never contributed his power to it 24.
  • Restriction: A spell placed by the other four Aspects prevents him from using the artifact himself 24.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Black metal armor — Covers his dragon form and serves as one of his most recognizable features 10.
  • Scale pendant — A black-gem pendant used to contact Rhonin. Recovered after Kreel’s death, it is later used to break the Dragon Soul 22 23 25.
  • Dragon Soul — His ancient creation, later wielded by Nekros to enslave Alexstrasza. Rhonin destroys it at Grim Batol 23 24 25.
  • Secrets of the Void — Natalie Selin’s notebook, discovered among the magical implements in Prestor’s residence. Aaron gives it to Uther as evidence 39 40.

Relationships

  • Rhonin — Captive and unwilling intermediary; Deathwing uses him to deceive Nekros, then discards him 17 27.
  • Nekros — Informs him about the Dragon Soul and manipulates him through Rhonin’s false warning of an Alliance attack 24 27.
  • Alexstrasza — Enemy whose enslavement he facilitates; she later joins the battle against him 24.
  • Ysera, Malygos, and Nozdormu — Fellow Aspects betrayed through the Dragon Soul. They pursue him after recovering their stolen power 23 25.
  • Taelan — Weakened red dragon whom Deathwing mocks and overpowers at Grim Batol 24.
  • Aaron — Opponent injured during Rhonin’s first abduction; later helps identify the means to restore the Aspects’ power and expose Prestor 10 25 40.
  • Blackscale Dragonspawn — Subordinates left in Prestor’s residence without notice of his departure; their capture helps expose his identity 38 40.
  • Calia — Aaron recalls that Deathwing, as Daval Prestor, became her fiancé. Calia openly detests Prestor 36 38.
