Background

Xia Mu befriends Shino on their first day at the Ninja Academy and becomes his deskmate. Shino’s quiet introduction—he says he likes bugs—is quickly forgotten by most classmates, but Xia Mu makes a point of acknowledging him 2 3. The two remain close after graduation despite being assigned to different teams 34 35.

Shino shares ninjutsu scrolls with Xia Mu, who in turn teaches him the Six Styles. Their friendship also extends to Tenten, whom Shino helps bring closer to Xia Mu 16 17 45. After struggling against Deidara and Sasori, Shino asks Xia Mu how to strengthen his insects and begins selectively breeding them for resistance and biting power 116 126.

Shino is calm and analytical in combat, using an opponent’s weaknesses rather than accepting an unfavorable direct fight 77 79. He values his companions and is willing to kill enemies sent to harm them 78. Although his presence is often overlooked, he cares about being noticed; Xia Mu and Tenten’s habit of recognizing him immediately makes him happy 7 45.

• Iron Body and Moon Walk: Uses Iron Body against Sakon and Ukon and Moon Walk to evade the Four-Tails’ attacks in midair 78 185.

Summoning
