Background / History

Early Life and the Extreme Hidden Sect

An orphan raised in the Extreme Hidden Sect, Chu Fan regarded the sect as his home despite experiencing mockery and humiliation there. He eventually became its only supreme genius in tens of thousands of years, associated with supreme yang and the righteous path 317 345.

During his Foundation Establishment years, he loved Xiaohe. Instructor Ban Jiu sexually assaulted her and repeatedly coerced her; she later rejected Chu Fan and humiliated him for his weakness. Qin Se found Chu Fan unconscious after the confrontation and cared for him afterward. Her occasional concern became a source of emotional support, while the incident with Xiaohe developed into an inner demon 371.

Chu Fan subsequently devoted himself to cultivation. His rapid rise brought him into the sect’s spotlight, but overcoming that inner demon remained essential to his Spirit Transformation tribulation 371.

Battle with a Daluo Immortal

At late Mahayana, Chu Fan fought a Daluo immortal who had descended from the heavens. By sacrificing all his strength and employing a supreme secret art, he stripped away the immortal’s three flowers and five Qi. The feat earned him the title of Immortal Emperor, although his reputation spread chiefly through the north 329 345.

The victory left him crippled. Fearing contempt from jealous cultivators and unwilling to disappoint his sect, he claimed to be traveling and instead settled in seclusion. There, he lived an ordinary life of chopping wood, farming, and cooking 329 361.

Journey Through Time

A mysterious raft descended from the heavens and landed at his doorstep. When Chu Fan stepped aboard, it carried him onto the river of time, where chaotic currents swept his crippled body countless epochs into the future 329.

After awakening a trace of primordial power, he began fighting his way upstream. During the journey, he witnessed a future demon from beyond the heavens leading beasts and ghostly souls into a catastrophe across the worlds. The vision strengthened his determination to save living beings 329.

He eventually regained True Immortal cultivation and returned to his former dwelling. Several hundred years had passed in the outside world 329.

Appearance

  • Usual attire: Fluttering white robes that give him the appearance of a banished immortal 329 345.
  • Features: Youthful, handsome, and fine-browed 368 439.
  • Bearing: Graceful and distinguished when maintaining the image of a powerful expert 345.
  • Later outfit: Cloud-embroidered clothing with a small cape, giving him the appearance of a noble young master 393.

Personality

Chu Fan is deeply attached to those he considers family or benefactors. The destruction of his sect devastates him, while his belief that Jiang Yantian and Luo Xingcai sacrificed life-saving medicine for him inspires an earnest promise of repayment. He attributes success not only to talent and effort, but also to the people who offer guidance and assistance along the way 329 381 382.

His confidence frequently becomes overconfidence. He repeatedly considers himself unmatched in the Upper Realm and assumes that superior cultivation makes excessive caution unnecessary. Even after losing to Jiang Yantian, he initially blames the opponent’s spatial suppression and tactics rather than abandoning that belief 348 359 365.

Romance is his greatest emotional vulnerability. Qin Se’s past kindness makes him especially susceptible to Xiao Yi’s impersonation of her. Compliments, apparent affection, and promises of dependence prompt him to give away spirit stones and treasures. His devotion becomes so consuming that he overlooks Jiang Yantian standing nearby when the latter conceals his presence 353 354 355.

His pride is particularly sensitive to public humiliation. He repeatedly cites his Daluo battle as proof of his strength, but reminders of the projected pig incident can break his composure even when he intends to remain calm 518 646.

Abilities & Skills

Boundless Compassion Art

A powerful, utmost-yang cultivation art obtained by chance. It rapidly improved his strength and was the principal reason he could contend with a Daluo immortal at Mahayana 360 367.

  • Combat manifestation: Produces brilliant golden light, countless phantom figures, and chanting resembling gods and Buddhas 377.
  • Restriction: Killing innocents causes backlash. The art defines an innocent as someone without the intent to kill him; sufficiently grave blood enmity can also permit lethal retaliation 360 394.
  • Exploitable weakness: Jiang Yantian uses weaker cultivators as living weapons, preventing Chu Fan from attacking or blocking without risking their deaths 360.
  • Attempted modification: Chu Fan uses the Nine-Petal Treasure Meditation Cushion to seek a way to remove the flaw. No successful modification is documented 365.

Primordial Sacred Body

Chu Fan possesses a Primordial Sacred Body that remained ruined after his crippling battle 329.

  • A trace of its primordial power allowed him to resist the river of time and begin returning toward his own era 329.
  • He later expends his primordial Qi in an all-out sword strike against Jiang Yantian’s black hole 437.

Swordsmanship and Spell Combat

Chu Fan fights with a massive sword, hand seals, protective barriers, and multiple magical treasures 358 437.

  • Directs his giant sword through the air and combines sword attacks with large-scale spells 358.
  • Uses suppressive techniques to briefly restrain the Heaven-Rending Si 377.
  • Cracks Jiang Yantian’s black hole with a full-power strike while riding the Heavenly Dao Bamboo Raft, exhausting himself in the process 437.
  • His passive surrounding currents can neutralize attacks from much weaker cultivators without active defense 394.

Movement and Tracking

  • Instantaneous movement: Teleports repeatedly in combat and travels rapidly across the Upper Realm 360 377.
  • Presence concealment: Hides his presence and changes locations to avoid pursuit 360.
  • Qi Attraction Technique: Detects lingering traces of presence within a hundred-li radius 337.
  • Disguise: Searches for Jiang Yantian while posing as an elderly wandering Daoist 337.

Fortune and Opportunity Recognition

Chu Fan is identified as a Child of Fortune, with an exceptional tendency to encounter hidden opportunities 373 518 632.

  • Accidentally uncovers an ancient secret realm while cleansing his intended cultivation cave 367.
  • Activates hidden mechanisms and discovers the Heaven-Mixing Seal in the Skeleton Abyss 373 383.
  • Practices reverence toward ancient experts and their remnants, believing that respectful conduct helped him receive opportunities denied to more arrogant companions 384.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Heavenly Dao Bamboo Raft — His lifebound spirit treasure and the vessel responsible for his journey through time and recovery. Later deployed as a major combat trump card 329 377 437.
  • Massive sword — A divine artifact used in his battles against Jiang Yantian 358 437.
  • Six Directions Disc — A spirit treasure used to track Jiang Yantian’s presence. It became unreliable near Raging Sea Cove, then cracked and lost its Heavenly Dao Qi 344 345 349.
  • Nine-Petal Treasure Meditation Cushion — Enhances comprehension of the Dao; used while attempting to modify the Boundless Compassion Art 365.
  • Golden Crow — Summoned during combat; later stated to have been devoured by Jiang Yantian 358 377.
  • Black Gold Pearl — Produced by his Golden Crow and used to suppress evil and restrain enemies. Destroyed during the Heaven-Rending Si battle 377.
  • Myriad Transformations Umbrella — Destroyed by the Heaven-Rending Si’s horn 377.
  • Five-Light Wind and Thunder Shield — A sacred-grade defensive treasure shattered by the Heaven-Rending Si 381.
  • Heaven-Mixing Seal — Discovered inside a black boulder and fitted into a corresponding depression to open an ancient sealed hall 383.

Relationships

  • Qin Se — His real senior sister and longstanding love. Her care after his experience with Xiaohe made her a symbol of salvation to him 361 371.
  • Xiao Yi — Impersonates Qin Se and exploits Chu Fan’s affection under Jiang Yantian’s direction. Chu Fan gives her five million high-grade spirit stones, followed by another million and additional treasures, believing they are surviving sect members who should support each other 349 353 361.
  • Jiang Yantian / Fuqing — Both his sworn enemy and, under another identity, his trusted friend. Chu Fan seeks vengeance against Jiang Yantian while remaining unaware that the helpful “Fuqing” is the same person 330 364 479 834.
  • Luo Xingcai — Meets him while posing as Fuqing’s wife. He comes to regard her as a benefactor after being deceived about her supposed sacrifice of a life-saving pill 364 381 382.
  • Lin Xuan — Rival for Xiao Yi’s affection and frequent brawling partner. Their hostility persists through repeated staged fights, although Chu Fan later admits missing him after reaching the Nine Heavens 430 476 632.
  • Xiaohe — Former lover whose rejection and humiliation of him became an inner demon 371.
  • Siyao — Awakens when he opens the Heavenly Feather Rainbow Coffin, but serves Jiang Yantian instead. Later breaks Chu Fan’s suppression of the cultivators confronting him 374 393.
  • Dongfang Suye — Attacks Chu Fan out of jealousy when Huai Yafu becomes interested in Jiang Yantian. Chu Fan recognizes that he is being used as an outlet for someone else’s resentment 634 635.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Revenge for the Sect

Chu Fan returns to the Extreme Hidden Sect only to discover its complete destruction. An Image-Recording Stone reveals Jiang Yantian’s taunts and responsibility for the massacre. Recognizing him as the demon from his future vision, Chu Fan resolves to kill him 329 330.

His search takes him through hundreds of factions and eventually toward Raging Sea Cove. He intends to avenge the sect, erect monuments for its dead, and only then summon his tribulation and ascend to the Nine Heavens 337 344.

Raging Sea Cove and Chenxiao Village

At the Drunken Immortal Pavilion, Chu Fan encounters Xiao Yi disguised as his beloved senior sister. Her apparent survival redirects much of his attention from revenge to romance 345 348 349.

His confrontation with Jiang Yantian exposes the restriction of the Boundless Compassion Art. Unable to fight safely when innocents are used against him, he retreats with Xiao Yi to Chenxiao Village. Jiang Yantian and Luo Xingcai follow in disguise and become his neighbors 360 363 364.

Ancient Battlefield and Public Disgrace

While preparing a secluded cultivation cave, Chu Fan uncovers an ancient secret realm. Inside, Jiang Yantian intensifies his inner demon, nearly costing him his True Immortal realm, and repeatedly manipulates his encounters 367 371 372.

After suffering severe injuries against the Heaven-Rending Si, Chu Fan is deceived into believing that Fuqing and Luo Xingcai saved him at great personal cost. His gratitude strengthens his trust in them 381 382.

Jiang Yantian later drugs him and broadcasts his sexual assault of a Fallen Flame Pig through the All-Heavens Projection. Once released from the drug’s influence, Chu Fan reacts with horror and kills the animal. The broadcast earns him the name “Pig-Riding Warrior” and makes him a target of public condemnation 389 390 393.

Rivalry with Lin Xuan

Chu Fan and Lin Xuan compete over Xiao Yi, often agreeing to fight without cultivation or Qi. Xiao Yi prolongs their rivalry and turns their brawls into paid spectacles 430 476.

Another defeat by Jiang Yantian leaves Chu Fan exhausted and despondent. Drug interference subsequently causes him and Lin Xuan to become temporarily affectionate before returning to hostility. Jiang Yantian later states that Chu Fan’s damaged soul and Dao heart, together with Xiao Yi’s manipulation, have destroyed his will to cultivate 437 439 440 479.

Nine Heavens and Imprisonment

Chu Fan reaches the Nine Heavens after the Demon Emperor opens a passage between realms. He joins the Extreme Hidden Realm, where the Upper Realm’s sect is revealed to be only a branch, and becomes a nominal disciple under an elder descended from its founding lineage 632 633.

He welcomes Fuqing as an old friend and prepares for a selection competition amid accusations of relying on connections and renewed mockery of the pig incident. Later, Fuqing persuades him to intervene against Dongfang Suming by appealing to his pride in his Daluo battle 632 633 646 673.

By the later projection episodes, Chu Fan is imprisoned in the Extreme Hidden Realm. He still hopes Fuqing will find proof that he was framed, unaware that his supposed ally is Jiang Yantian. His imprisonment continues in subsequent appearances and is reaffirmed much later in the story 834 954 1365.
