Background / History
Childhood and Apprenticeship
Tang San lived in Holy Soul Village with Tang Hao, whom he initially knew only as a blacksmith. Despite being a child, he handled much of his father’s care. His diet consisted largely of heavily diluted porridge; even when Old Jack helped the household, the meat went to Tang Hao. Li Changsheng later recognized his thin physique as malnutrition 3 5.
He retained knowledge from a previous life as a Tang Sect disciple, including the Mysterious Heaven Skill, assassination techniques, and hidden-weapon craftsmanship 2 4 6 10.
Old Jack escorted him to Nuoding Academy, where Li Changsheng offered to handle his registration. Impressed by Li’s insistence that a Martial Soul did not determine a person’s worth or ambition, Tang San asked to become his disciple. Li accepted, and Tang San entered Dorm Seven 2 3.
Training at Nuoding Academy
Li Changsheng supplied Tang San with bedding, daily necessities, money, and the storage belt Tang San named Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges. He also took responsibility for his cultivation, explaining Soul Ring bottlenecks and accompanying him to obtain his first ring 3 4.
During their journey, Tang San revealed his second Martial Soul. Li identified it as the Clear Sky Hammer, disclosed Tang Hao’s identity as Clear Sky Douluo, and explained that Tang San’s apparently ordinary Blue Silver Grass carried the Blue Silver Emperor bloodline 5.
Alongside cultivation, Tang San studied Li’s theory books and sought smithy work to obtain materials for hidden weapons. He later exchanged books with Xiao Wu, annotating the Soul Master compendium for her before studying Soul Beast theory himself 10 15.
Xiao Wu and the First Return Home
Xiao Wu became Li Changsheng’s second disciple, making her Tang San’s fellow student as well as his roommate. Their friendship deepened during a vacation in Holy Soul Village, where Tang San discovered that Tang Hao had departed without saying goodbye, leaving only a note 14 17.
During that visit, Xiao Wu offered him the wooden comb left by her mother and asked to call him “Third Brother.” The exchange marked a change in their relationship 17.
Shrek Academy and Reunion with Ah Yin
At twelve, Tang San traveled with Li Changsheng and Xiao Wu to Suotuo City. He demonstrated his level-thirty-four cultivation to Flender and subsequently entered Shrek Academy. During the entrance assessment, he coordinated Xiao Wu, Zhu Zhuqing, and Ning Rongrong against his own master 19 20 24 25.
Li later revealed that Tang San’s mother was Ah Yin, the previous Blue Silver Emperor, who had sacrificed herself to Tang Hao. After the group’s Star Dou Great Forest expedition, Li took Tang San back to Holy Soul Village. Tang San used his Blue Silver Grass to locate Ah Yin behind a waterfall, finding her alive as a weakened plant in a dark cave 34 37.
Angered by the conditions in which his mother had been kept, Tang San resolved to question Tang Hao himself. He absorbed her right leg bone, received the Life Spider Spear, and took Ah Yin away in a flowerpot. On the return journey, he shared his inherited cultivation techniques with Li Changsheng 38 39 40.
Back at Shrek, Tang San pursued a hidden-weapon business arrangement with Ning Rongrong while beginning specialized training in the simultaneous control of his eight Life Spider Spears 41 45 46 47.
Appearance
- Early childhood: Thin enough for Li Changsheng to describe him as “a bundle of sticks,” with short black hair 3 4.
- After one year of template changes: Develops a more refined, cute face and black hair with an inky-blue surface sheen 16.
- At twelve: Tall and straight-backed, with dark blue hair, blue-violet eyes, and a faint, confident smile 19.
- Clothing: Wears a fitted blue-and-black combat outfit, a dark blue sleeveless vest over a close-fitting black shirt, silver-white trim, and Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges at his waist 19.
- Soul Marks: Bears Blue Silver Grass on the back of his right hand and a Clear Sky Hammer on the back of his left. He can suppress both marks with Soul Power 23.
- Avatar Armor: Blue, plant-patterned armor covers his arm when manifested 20 35.
Personality
Tang San places exceptional weight on loyalty, gratitude, and traditional obligations. He repeatedly kneels and kowtows to Li Changsheng, sometimes hard enough to injure his forehead, and explicitly regards his teacher as family. His desire to repay Li extends from growing stronger to privately considering how to find him a suitable wife 10 11 38.
He is diligent and reluctant to become dependent on others. He preserves the money Li gives him, seeks paid work for crafting materials, annotates theory books, and studies suitable Soul Beasts so that his master will not have to handle every aspect of future hunts 10 15.
His caution remains selective rather than absolute. He conceals his twin Martial Souls and avoids telling new acquaintances about the Blue Silver Emperor, but gradually entrusts Li with his deepest secrets and inherited techniques 5 26 39 40.
Li’s guidance also shapes his views of Soul Beasts: Tang San accepts that some seek peace rather than treating all of them as inherently evil. Meanwhile, the manhua template subtly changes his speech and conduct over time 6 10.
Abilities & Skills
Twin Martial Souls
Tang San possesses two inherited Martial Souls of comparable underlying quality 5.
- Blue Silver Grass / Blue Silver Emperor: His primary combat Martial Soul. Its imperial bloodline is initially dormant, and Li directs its development through life-type plant rings 5 6.
- Clear Sky Hammer: A jet-black hammer inherited through Tang Hao. Li identifies it as the Clear Sky Sect’s inherited Martial Soul and the continent’s foremost tool Martial Soul 5.
- Development limit: Full Blue Silver Emperor awakening has not been shown by his return to Shrek after absorbing the right leg bone 38 40.
Blue Silver Soul Skills
| Skill | Type | Applications and Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Blue Silver Absorption | First Soul Skill | Drains Soul Power and stamina from living targets through contact. Tang San initially applies it through entanglement; whether it becomes lethal depends on his Soul Power output 7. |
| Blue Silver Sea of Life | Third Soul Skill | Produces a mass of surrounding Blue Silver Grass. He uses it to bind Luo Sanpao during Shrek’s entrance assessment 24. |
| Blue Silver Thread Pull | Self-Created Soul Skill | Splits Blue Silver Grass into fine strands for pulling targets, redirecting movement, or drawing closer through leverage. Requires precise control and consumes relatively little Soul Power 18 24 25. |
| Blue Silver Strangulation Net | Named combat technique | Interweaves divided strands into a large net. He captures a Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent and drains its stamina until it can no longer fly 35. |
Life-Focused Cultivation
His first three rings all come from life-type plant Soul Beasts, strengthening the toughness of his Blue Silver Grass and supporting its imperial bloodline 35 38.
- Avoids poison attributes that Li considers incompatible with the Blue Silver Emperor’s life essence 6.
- Uses refined whale rubber for body tempering under Li’s supervision 16.
- Resonates with Ah Yin through Blue Silver Grass, allowing him to trace her location and communicate during their reunion 37.
- Releases abundant vitality while absorbing his mother’s Soul Bone, indirectly improving her condition 38 39.
Martial Soul Avatar Armor
His manhua-template development grants partial armor condensed from Soul Power, distinct from Martial Soul Avatar 20.
- Appears as translucent blue armor decorated with vines, flowers, and leaves 20.
- Slightly improves limb defense; the general system increases armor coverage as more rings are obtained 20.
- Covers his entire arm during the Star Dou Great Forest encounters 35.
Soul Bone Abilities
- Blue Silver Emperor Right Leg Bone: Grants flight and the regenerative skill described as “Wildfire cannot burn it away; the spring breeze brings it back to life” 38.
- Life Spider Spear: An external Soul Bone with an initial age of three thousand years. It can develop through natural life force and continued Soul Power nourishment 36 39.
- Control training: Tang San initially struggles to retract the spears precisely. Later, he practices moving all eight in pairs, carving a board and assembling a Sleeve Arrow while simultaneously controlling a jar of pickled vegetables 42 47.
Tang Sect Techniques and Craftsmanship
Tang San preserves several techniques from his previous life and eventually teaches them to Li Changsheng 6 40.
- Mysterious Heaven Skill: His foundational cultivation method. Its early bottleneck is resolved by obtaining a Soul Ring 4.
- Purple Demon Eye: Cultivated at dawn using Purple Qi 10.
- Mysterious Jade Hand: Among the techniques he shares with his master 40.
- Hidden weapons: Makes devices such as Sleeve Arrows and silver needles, and recognizes Plate Crystal as material for Dragon Whisker Needles 10 21 41.
- Forging: Learns a hammer technique from Tang Hao before leaving Holy Soul Village 10.
- Assassination experience: Retained Tang Sect training gives him swift, accurate dagger handling when harvesting his first ring 6.
Theory and Tactical Coordination
- Memorizes extensive Martial Soul and Soul Beast information from Li’s compendia 15 35.
- Explains travel formations and encountered creatures to his teammates during the Star Dou Great Forest expedition 35.
- Uses Blue Silver Grass to reposition allies, launch coordinated attacks, and catch injured teammates 24 25.
- Identifies Ning Rongrong’s sect through her Soul Mark 23.
- Earns Zhao Wuji’s assessment that his knowledge is sufficient for teaching rather than merely studying 36.
