Chapters 276–285 Vol. 3 Read

Ch. 276Animagus

Dumbledore explained why Permanent Transfiguration and becoming an Animagus were difficult in different ways, prompting Tom to consider how emotion and reason shaped magic. The conversation ended with Dumbledore keeping his own Animagus status secret, while Mo Fei wondered whether he could transform at all.

  • Dumbledore explained that Permanent Transfiguration required destroying and reconstructing an object, and that mistakes could make the result useless or dangerous, especially when living things were involved.
  • Tom asked why books called becoming an Animagus Transfiguration’s most difficult advanced application, and Dumbledore explained that its challenge lay in exposing one’s inner self to magic.
  • Dumbledore described the lengthy Animagus ritual and warned that hesitation could cause transformation failures, which he linked to the origin of werewolves.
  • Tom connected Dumbledore’s explanation to Grindelwald’s distinction between emotion-driven and reason-directed magic, then wondered whether the same approaches applied across other subjects.
  • Tom asked whether Dumbledore could become an Animagus, but Dumbledore called the answer private; Mo Fei suspected that Dumbledore might be unable or unwilling to transform.

Ch. 277Advancing on multiple fronts

Mo Fei, Dumbledore, and Grindelwald began preparing a plan to transform the relationship between wizards and Muggles, while Nicolas Flamel gathered powerful wizards to explain the danger facing their world. The gathered Magic Masters mocked Nicolas’s sudden concern, leaving him to press on with his proposal.

  • Dumbledore asked when Mo Fei’s plan would begin, and Mo Fei said preparations could start now while Grindelwald would determine the right moment.
  • Mo Fei proposed that Hogwarts teach young wizards a more accurate understanding of Muggles, and Dumbledore accepted the need to improve Muggle Studies.
  • Nicolas Flamel invited Magic Masters from across the world to his home, prompting concern and speculation within the Wizards’ Council.
  • The Wizards’ Council chose not to interfere, and the Ministry of Magic allowed foreign wizards to enter Paris.
  • Nicolas told the assembled wizards that the Wizarding World’s mysteries were shifting toward Muggles and warned that this could threaten the future of Magic Masters and their living environment.
  • Lissandra and another elderly wizard mocked Nicolas for raising the issue, while the other Magic Masters laughed.

Ch. 278Talking with the Big Shots

Nicolas Flamel proposed that powerful wizards create a world that would support wizarding life and help them advance, with magical schools serving as key nodes. The wizards began considering their roles, while the dying Jeremy recognized how their different specialties could make the plan work and asked Nicolas where he intended to create the world.

  • Nicolas Flamel argued that a world built for wizards could inspire legends and help them take another step forward.
  • A witch questioned why the wizards needed Nicolas, but the group recognized that creating a world required his alchemical skill.
  • Nicolas asked Jeremy how long he had to live, and Jeremy said he had come to say goodbye but had seen a suitable area beside the kingdom of death.
  • Nicolas explained that the plan needed a seer, a location, and further preparation, and proposed that the wizards become headmasters of magical schools.
  • The wizards made no commitments and departed in secret, while Jeremy stayed behind and deduced how their life, death, warding, alchemy, and other magic could fit together.
  • Jeremy asked Nicolas where he planned to carve out the new world.

Ch. 279The Great Wizard of Death

Nicolas Flamel told a death-studying Magic Master that Mo Fei, a Muggle whose advice inspired the idea, might be God's Chosen. The two considered creating a wizarding world in the Land of Shadows, while the Magic Master grew more intent on meeting Mo Fei before his own dangerous death.

  • Nicolas Flamel explained that Mo Fei had suggested creating a world for wizards within the shadows and might be favored by fate as God's Chosen.
  • The Magic Master questioned whether God's Chosen could exist, but listened as Nicolas described what ancient texts said about them.
  • The Magic Master recalled that his apprentices had failed him, including a young woman who abandoned magic and left with a Muggle.
  • After receiving Nicolas Flamel's message, the Magic Master buried the Black Swamp and considered ways to die without unleashing death magic on the world.
  • Nicolas Flamel explained that the Land of Shadows could offer wizards a fitting home, though they would need to breach its barriers and face the Queen of Shadows.
  • The Magic Master accepted that the idea might give wizards hope and became more determined to meet Mo Fei.

Ch. 280The approaching great wizard

Dylan discussed Nicolas Flamel’s plan with him and Perenelle, then left to find Mo Fei on foot as organizations failed to uncover details about the secret meeting. Meanwhile, Tom continued his combat training with Grindelwald at the orphanage, struggling to distinguish dangerous spells from harmless ones.

  • Perenelle told Dylan she supported Nicolas’s plan and would help by providing logistical support.
  • Dylan left Nicolas and Perenelle’s home and set out on foot toward Mo Fei’s location in London.
  • Wizards in international organizations tried to learn what Nicolas and the other Magic Masters had discussed but found no concrete information.
  • Grindelwald taught Tom to conserve his strength by dodging or ignoring nonlethal attacks while defending against dangerous spells.
  • Tom struggled to distinguish Grindelwald’s Knockback Jinx from the Disarming Charm when Grindelwald cast them in quick succession.

Ch. 281New work was coming Mo Fei's way

Tom struggled through Grindelwald’s combat training before using Magic Vision to identify incoming spells, while Kyle asked Mo Fei to redesign his shop. After Tom left for his second year at Hogwarts, Grindelwald and a witch arrived at the orphanage to arrange for Mo Fei to take in young wizards orphaned by war.

  • Grindelwald trained Tom to dodge multiple spells, and Tom realized he could use Magic Vision to see magic gathering before a spell was cast.
  • Tom tried Magic Vision in another round, spotted the incoming spells, but was still hit and disarmed by Grindelwald.
  • Kyle returned to the renovated orphanage, noticed traces of magic, and persuaded Mo Fei to help redesign his shop in Hogsmeade.
  • Tom bought only the supplies he needed in Diagon Alley, glimpsed the dangers of Knockturn Alley, and left for Hogwarts as Mo Fei saw him off at King’s Cross.
  • Grindelwald and a witch came to the orphanage, where she told Mo Fei that he was expected to take in young wizards orphaned by war.

Ch. 282Preparing to receive them

Mo Fei agreed to care for two children brought from abroad, one an orphan and the other a newborn descendant of Grindelwald, and Grindelwald arranged a Floo Network connection at the orphanage. The connection was completed, and Niya departed through it for Nurmengard.

  • Grindelwald explained that wizarding families in Germany and France had been targeted, and that selected children would be brought to London until they were old enough to return to Durmstrang.
  • A witch explained that the children would stay in London's East End under regular Auror checks, while Mo Fei only needed to educate them.
  • The witch revealed that one child was a Grindelwald descendant, but Grindelwald rejected the idea that bloodline alone made someone his heir and chose the newborn for training.
  • Mo Fei accepted the arrangement, and Grindelwald said the children would arrive in a week, with a Floo Network connection planned for the orphanage.
  • Grindelwald used the magical crocuses by the entrance to create a Floo Network doorway, and Niya completed the connection with Floo Powder.
  • Grindelwald explained how the network worked, then Niya used it to travel to Nurmengard.

Ch. 283Before second year

Mo Fei prepared to welcome wizard orphans after Grindelwald established a secured portal at the orphanage. On the Hogwarts Express, Tom made up with Malfoy over his silence during the holidays, then set out to visit Owen.

  • Grindelwald assured Mo Fei that the portal route to Nurmengard was secured and persuaded him to accept the arrangement.
  • After Grindelwald and his subordinates left, Mo Fei prepared the orphanage for the arriving wizard children and wondered how Kyle’s shop preparations were going.
  • On the Hogwarts Express, Malfoy complained that Tom had not written to him during the holiday.
  • Tom apologized and shared savory snacks made by Mo Fei, winning Malfoy over with the food.
  • Malfoy left to patrol the train as a prefect, and Tom decided to visit Owen in Ravenclaw.

Ch. 284Making inroads into Ravenclaw

Tom visited Owen and the other Ravenclaws, using a discussion about the Bird-Conjuring Charm to draw them into conversation. He then asked for information about Salazar Slytherin and left Owen teasing him about needing their help.

  • Tom left Malfoy's compartment and found Owen reading with two Ravenclaws in their compartment.
  • Tom teased Owen about repeating a stereotype of Slytherins, making Owen blush while his friends watched.
  • Tom asked the Ravenclaws whether conjured birds were real, magical creations, or reflections, and listened as they debated the Bird-Conjuring Charm.
  • Tom revealed that he wanted to consult Ravenclaw accounts of Salazar Slytherin, including his flaws, his departure from Hogwarts, and lost magic such as Parseltongue.
  • Owen welcomed Tom's interest but teased him for needing help despite being Slytherin's little prince.

Ch. 285Kyle's Publicity

Tom used his nickname, Slytherin's Little Prince, to spread word of Kyle's new clothing shop, whose dazzling display outside Hogsmeade captured the students' attention. After arriving at Hogwarts, Tom discovered that a Thestral seemed unusually affectionate toward him.

  • Owen told Tom that students had been calling him Slytherin's Little Prince since the Dream Tea Party, and Tom realized the nickname came from Kyle's dress robes.
  • Tom told Owen and two Ravenclaws that the outfit had been custom-made and that its maker was opening a shop in Hogsmeade, allowing them to spread the news.
  • At the station, students saw Kyle's clothes displayed on mannequins outside Hogsmeade and excitedly discussed them during the carriage ride to Hogwarts.
  • Tom wondered about the Thestrals pulling the carriages and considered visiting them in the Forbidden Forest.
  • After Tom got out of his carriage, its Thestral rubbed its horn against his palm, then left after Tom said he would visit later.
