Personality

Ash is enthusiastic, competitive, and exceptionally difficult to intimidate. He willingly challenges Lu Chen’s newly evolved Garchomp despite knowing how badly its previous form outmatched Charizard. Even after seeing Lu Chen’s overwhelming League performances, he remains determined to compete rather than concede 50 68.

His affection for Pokémon matters more to him than their talent or prestige. When told that an Aura Guardian’s matching egg can indicate their potential, he promises to raise whatever hatches without comparing its worth to other Pokémon. His loyalty can also become reckless: he burns his hands uncovering the injured Charizard and later fights Lucario after it questions his commitment to Pikachu 32 43 126.

Ash is impulsive and prone to overestimating what he understands. After discovering that Aura can improve physical fitness, he asks Pikachu to strike him with Thunderbolt and is immediately incapacitated. Nevertheless, his training becomes more deliberate after meeting Lu Chen, and he accepts major defeats without abandoning his goals 27 30 72.

Abilities & Skills

Aura Perception

Ash’s awakened Aura allows him to perceive nearby objects without relying on sight 29.

  • Avoids furniture while walking with his eyes closed 30.
  • Learns to catch balls thrown from three meters away, improving after his first two failed attempts 30.
  • Recognizes Aura-based evasion in footage of Aaron’s Lucario, while acknowledging that Lucario is much more skilled than he is 45.

Aura Resonance with Pokémon

Ash independently discovers an advanced application of Aura during Charizard’s battle against Garchomp. The connection carries his intentions to Charizard and increases its strength 51.

  • Mental connection: Charizard can understand what Ash is thinking and wants it to do 51.
  • Power enhancement: Their first demonstrated link strengthens Charizard and accompanies its first use of Dragon Pulse 51.
  • Attack amplification: Aura gives Charizard’s Flamethrower greater concentration and a faint blue glow during the deciding exchange against Gary 72.
  • Limits: The link breaks when Charizard is knocked unconscious, leaving Ash dizzy and unable to remain standing. It does not overcome Garchomp’s overwhelming strength 51.
  • Experience gap: Aaron’s superior Aura control and battle experience remain decisive when they meet in the League quarterfinals 72.

Pokémon Training and Battle Tactics

Witnessing Lu Chen’s strength pushes Ash to train more seriously and consider tactics before battles rather than simply charging ahead 27.

  • Uses Squirtle to seek a type advantage against Zorua’s Gouging Fire form, though Lu Chen counters by having Zorua transform into Venusaur 32.
  • Changes to an aerial strategy when Charizard’s Flamethrower cannot damage Garchomp, only to discover that Garchomp can also fly 51.
  • Respects Bulbasaur’s wish to become stronger without evolving 31.
  • Shows strong climbing stamina during the journey to the Tree of Beginning, charging ahead despite the mountain’s prohibition on Pokémon flight 125.

Pokémon

Pokémon Documented role and development

Charmander → Charmeleon → Charizard Becomes disobedient after evolving into Charmeleon and continues rejecting commands as Charizard. Accepts Ash by their later visit to Lu Chen’s farm, develops Aura resonance with him, and defeats Gary’s Blastoise in the League 14 27 32 42 51 72.
Bulbasaur Initially refuses evolution and approaches the advanced-level threshold while remaining a Bulbasaur. Begins undergoing evolution after receiving Fruit of Life 31 131.
Squirtle Loses to Lu Chen’s Zorua in its Venusaur form. Begins undergoing evolution after receiving Fruit of Life 32 131.
Froakie / Frogadier Hatches from the riverbank egg Ash finds after awakening Aura. Appears as a newly evolved Frogadier during the Battle Frontier challenge, although the later Fruit of Life scene calls it Froakie 43 52 107 131.

History

Great Canyon Rescue

Ash visits the Great Canyon hoping to find more fossils than Gary. Team Rocket’s explosives trigger a collapse, trapping him underground with the trio. Fossil Pokémon surround them before Lu Chen arrives on Aerodactyl and frightens the Pokémon into submission 14 15.

During their meeting, Lu Chen notices that his goddess statue reacts to Ash. He suspects Aura talent and briefly considers a possible connection to Cameran Palace’s ancient royal line, but cannot establish Ash’s ancestry. The encounter also exposes Ash to a level of strength far beyond his own and becomes a turning point in his approach to training 15 27.

Return to Pallet Town

After collecting all eight Kanto Badges, Ash heads straight to Lu Chen’s farm to show his progress and claim a promised gift. Lu Chen explains Aura through a story about an ancient warrior and an Aura Guardian, then uses the goddess statue to awaken Ash’s power 27 28 29.

Ash subsequently challenges Lu Chen, but his team is overwhelmed. Charizard ignores his orders and suffers serious injuries against Gabite; Ash burns his hands removing the rocks pinning it down. By a later visit, Charizard has accepted him. Ash also finds a pale cyan Pokémon Egg beside a river, which Lu Chen identifies as a natural match for his Aura 32 42 43.

Kanto League Conference

Before the Conference, Ash unlocks Aura resonance with Charizard during another loss to Lu Chen. His egg responds to the Aura and hatches into Froakie the following morning 51 52.

At the League, Ash defeats Ritchie with Charizard and Pikachu, then faces Gary in a six-on-six match in the top-sixteen round. Their final exchange pits Charizard against Blastoise; Ash’s Aura-enhanced Flamethrower wins the battle. Aaron subsequently defeats him in the quarterfinals, leaving Ash among the tournament’s top eight 71 72 86.

Aaron invites him to train with the Aura Clan, but Ash refuses to abandon his identity as a Pallet Town Trainer or his ties to Gary and Lu Chen. He also rejects Aaron’s attempt to undermine his trust in Lu Chen over Zorua competing in Lu Chen’s place 72 73.

Hoenn and the Battle Frontier

Ash later accepts a visit to the Aura Clan’s hidden holy land alongside Lu Chen, Gary, Misty, and Brock. When Lu Chen leaves, Ash immediately chooses to accompany him. The clan leader permits this, recognizing that Lu Chen can teach what the clan would otherwise offer 79 83.

At Brandon’s excavation site, the King of Persia possesses Ash and uses his body as leverage against Lu Chen. Lu Chen severely injures the possessed body but ultimately cannot bring himself to kill Ash. After the King’s soul apparently dissipates, Ash collapses unconscious and later awakens without understanding what occurred. The others conceal both the possession and Lu Chen’s ancient origins, telling him that a trap’s sleep-inducing gas caused his collapse 97 101 102.

Ash remains in Hoenn to challenge the Battle Frontier. After three consecutive defeats against Brandon’s Regirock, he eventually returns to Pallet Town to rest and seek Lu Chen’s advice 107 118.

Cameran Palace and the Tree of Beginning

Learning that Lu Chen has gone to Cameran Palace, Ash follows with Misty and Brock. When Mew takes Pikachu and Lapras to the Tree of Beginning, Ash refuses to wait the years their return might take and joins the rescue journey 118 124.

On the mountain, Lucario’s accusations about abandoning Pikachu provoke Ash into a fistfight, which Lu Chen stops. Later, Ash shares Fruit of Life with his Pokémon, triggering evolution in several partners. After returning to Cameran Palace, he leaves for the Hoenn League Conference, promising to win its championship and challenge Brandon again afterward 126 131 132.

Relationships

  • Delia — Mother. Worries about his dangerous travels and thanks Lu Chen for awakening a power that may help him protect himself 14 43.
  • Lu Chen — Rescuer, neighbor, and trusted source of guidance whom Ash calls “big brother.” Ash seeks his approval and advice, although Lu Chen initially tells him to explore Aura on his own rather than formally teaching him 27 29 73 118.
  • Misty — Traveling companion who frequently challenges his recklessness. Pleads for his life during the possession crisis and helps catch him when he collapses 30 97 101.
  • Brock — Traveling companion who supports his development and encourages a different approach after repeated losses to Brandon 27 107.
  • Gary — Rival and friend. Their competition extends from fossil hunting and Badge collection to a full League battle, but Ash explicitly identifies himself as Gary’s friend when refusing Aaron’s invitation 14 19 72.
  • Professor Oak — Supporter who encourages him to learn from Lu Chen and celebrates his progress with Charizard and Aura 42 43 51.
  • Aaron — Fellow Aura Guardian and quarterfinal opponent. Attempts to recruit Ash into the Aura Clan, then accepts the clan leader’s decision to let him remain with Lu Chen 72 83.
  • Brandon — Battle Frontier opponent and a major benchmark for Ash’s ambitions. Repeated defeats against Regirock lead Ash to postpone the challenge rather than abandon it 107 118 132.
  • Sir Aaron’s Lucario — Initially clashes with Ash over loyalty to Pokémon; their argument becomes physical during the search for Pikachu 124 126.

Notable Quotes

“Whatever Pokémon hatches from it, I'll raise it well!” 43

“I, Ash, will always be a trainer from Pallet Town! Gary's friend! Big brother Lu Chen's neighbor!” 72

“Pikachu is my most important partner. … I will never abandon Pikachu.” 126

Trivia

  • His Aura ancestry remains unconfirmed. Lu Chen cannot determine whether Ash descends from the first Aura Guardian or another Guardian who received a blessing 29.
  • Ash-Greninja is not an achieved form in these passages. Lu Chen recalls the Bond Phenomenon from his previous-life knowledge and considers whether Ash’s newly hatched Froakie is that same Pokémon 52.
  • The evolution record contains a naming inconsistency. Ash has a newly evolved Frogadier at the Battle Pyramid, but the later Fruit of Life scene names his partner Froakie 107 131.
