Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Established strength: peak Champion level in normal form | 7 39 | Already powerful enough to restrain Agatha’s peak Elite Four-level Gengar with one hand and no move. Its normal-form rank is explicitly confirmed later. |
| Super-ancient giant form: brushes against the realm of gods | 38 39 | Activates its markings and grows larger than Ancient Gengar and Ancient Alakazam combined, overwhelming both together. |

Appearance
- Normal form: A round, dark-purple body, short claws, white teeth, and an almost constant mischievous grin. Unlike Aerodactyl and Lapras, it initially appears relatively ordinary apart from its markings 2 68.
- Original markings: Dark purple-black, totem-like patterns extend from its neck to its limbs, incorporating intricate lines and symbols. They glow when it assumes giant form 34 38.
- Former giant form: Expands through successive heights exceeding fifty meters, eventually dwarfing both giant opponents at the Pokémopolis Ruins 38 39.
- Mega Gengar: Almost translucent, with what resembles a bottomless extradimensional space beneath its body 113.
- After the Fruit of Life: Its markings disappear completely, leaving a pure, deep-purple body 131.
Background / History
Ancient era and retirement
Gengar fought beside Lu Chen for more than a decade on the super-ancient battlefields. Repeated life-and-death struggles shaped its combat instincts, while Hypnosis became a specialty used against countless enemies. It also knew the first Aura Guardian and habitually retaliated against their arguments by drawing nightmare-inducing pictures on his forehead 10 39 64 68.
After traveling to the modern era, Gengar joined Lu Chen’s retirement in Pallet Town. It usually stayed in his shadow and helped furnish their new home from its pocket dimension. Although Lu Chen initially assumed it would not want a Poké Ball, Gengar showed interest in the capture ceremony and later appeared from a ball on several occasions 2 4 5 34.
Farm life and the stolen sapling
When Agatha attacked Lu Chen to test his claims, Gengar seized her ace by the throat and held it helpless until Lu Chen ordered its release. The encounter left Agatha’s Gengar terrified of it even during their later meeting at the League Conference 7 8 75.
Gengar subsequently volunteered to investigate a stolen Starf Berry sapling, inspired by the film Pokémon Detective. Working with Gabite, it identified spilled, nutrient-rich soil as a trail and helped corner the thief—a Zorua disguised as Mew. It also defended the farm alongside Aerodactyl and Lapras when a super-giant Dragonite tried to take Lapras away 20 21 24.
Pokémopolis Ruins
While escorting an archaeological team, Gengar and Lu Chen recognized the excavation as a likely former home from their ancient travels. When Ancient Gengar and Ancient Alakazam emerged, Gengar assumed its own giant form to subdue them. Before finishing the battle, it retrieved the archaeologists trapped inside Ancient Gengar’s alternate space 34 38 39 40.
The defeated Pokémon returned to their black dumbbell and golden spoon forms. Gengar later helped Lu Chen revisit the ruins and stored the great bell they found there. Hokuto’s gratitude for the rescue continued into their next meeting, when she fed Gengar snacks while sketching its markings 40 94.
League Conference and later battles
Aaron’s public criticism of Lu Chen provoked Gengar into attempting an attack, but Lu Chen recalled it and promised it the first battle against him. Gengar later punished Aaron with nightmare-inducing graffiti, then faced his Mega Lucario Z at the League Conference. It casually disrupted the targeting of Lucario Z’s Aura Spheres before Lu Chen told it to stop playing 64 68 74 75.
Gengar later participated in the battle against the Masked Man’s controlled Ho-Oh, using Mega Evolution and dimensional attacks. At Cameran Palace, it restrained the berserk Lucario released from the queen’s scepter. Its next major transformation followed consumption of a Fruit of Life, which exchanged its giant form for improved Mega transformation and dimensional control 113 114 121 131.
Personality
Gengar is playful, theatrical, and fond of unsettling jokes. It retrieves stored objects through its mouth for amusement, makes faces at people, and enthusiastically dresses the part when playing detective. Its cheerful behavior also includes a conspicuous fondness for snacks, from candy and cola to popcorn during tournament matches 4 20 41 43 72.
Beneath that grin, Gengar retains the ruthless instincts of the ancient battlefields. When Aaron insulted Lu Chen, it regarded killing him—and eliminating witnesses—as a straightforward solution. Nevertheless, it obeyed Lu Chen’s order to return and accepted his decision to settle the matter through battle 64.
Gengar is also capable of consideration and honesty. It serves Lu Chen tea, recognizes his kindness beneath his cold exterior, and admits that several deductions credited to it actually came from Gabite. Hokuto’s heartfelt thanks after the ruins rescue leave it visibly embarrassed 20 33 40.
Abilities & Skills
Shadow Movement and Intangibility
Gengar uses shadows both as a hiding place and as an approach route 2 21 24.
- Remains concealed in Lu Chen’s shadow, initially escaping Professor Oak’s notice 2.
- Emerges from an opponent’s shadow for close-range ambushes, then withdraws before retaliation 24.
- Passes through walls and helps Lu Chen navigate the ruined Pokémopolis site 40.
- Moves behind Lucario almost as though teleporting, catching it before it can attack Ash 121.
Alternate Dimension
Gengar maintains access to a pocket of another dimension used for storage, restraint, and maneuvering 4 39 114.
- Stores and retrieves household furniture, food, artifacts, and large objects such as the great bell 4 40 49.
- Opens a dimensional fissure capable of drawing in Ancient Gengar and Ancient Alakazam 39.
- Reaches directly into Ancient Gengar’s separate alternate space to recover trapped humans 40.
- As Mega Gengar, repeatedly enters another dimension and reappears around Ho-Oh to attack from changing angles 114.
- After the Fruit of Life, can open distant doorways rather than relying on retrieval through its mouth 131.
Hypnosis
Hypnosis is Gengar’s greatest specialty, refined over more than a decade of battlefield experience 39.
- Sends out dark-purple ripples that precisely envelop multiple targets 39.
- Nearly puts both Ancient Gengar and Ancient Alakazam to sleep simultaneously 39.
- Limit: Those opponents escape its immediate effect by inflicting pain on themselves 39.
Ghost-Type Attacks and Restraints
Gengar combines overwhelming physical strength with Ghost-type energy 7 17 24.
- Shadow Ball: Uses point-blank attacks to interrupt Dragonite’s Hyper Beam and dimensional ambushes to harass Ho-Oh 24 114.
- Ghost-energy punch: Knocks Ash’s newly evolved Charizard unconscious with one blow when it attacks Lu Chen 17.
- Black-energy chains: Wraps Dragonite’s legs in heavy restraints while its teammates continue attacking 24.
- Energy suppression: Its grip prevents Agatha’s Gengar from using its Ghost-type energy or escaping through shadows 8.
Aura Interference and Nightmare Graffiti
Gengar has extensive experience countering Aura users, though it visibly dislikes contact with Aura 74 75.
- Lucario’s probing Aura disappears upon touching Gengar, yielding no readable information 74.
- Interferes with Mega Lucario Z’s Aura Sphere targeting so that an entire barrage misses 75.
- Condenses Ghost-type malice into pigment that cannot be washed off and causes nightmares for several days. Aaron suffers three consecutive nights after being marked 68 74.
- Limit: Gengar considers interfering with the powerful Lucario it knew in the ancient era more troublesome than countering Aaron’s Lucario 75.
Transformations
Gengar’s transformations emphasize different strengths 38 113 114 131.
- Former super-ancient giant form: Greatly increased size and power, but consumed substantial stamina even when Gengar sustained little damage. The Fruit of Life permanently removes access to this form 40 131.
- Mega Evolution: Raises its strength beyond peak Champion level and particularly enhances the alternate dimension beneath it 113 114.
- Post-fruit transformation: Can switch directly into Mega Gengar while concealed in shadows 131.
Investigation and Communication
Gengar pursues detective work enthusiastically and can relay information between Lu Chen and other Pokémon 20.
- Uses a magnifying glass and a Holmes-style coat during the sapling investigation 20.
- Identifies enriched soil dropped along the thief’s route 20.
- Translates Gabite’s observations through cries and gestures that Lu Chen can roughly understand 20.
Documented Limitations
- Fails to intercept the King of Persia’s soul before it enters Ash’s body 97.
- Is unfamiliar with modern Eject Buttons; Blue’s Jigglypuff and Clefable escape its grip through automatic recall, leaving it bewildered 110.
Equipment / Stored Items
- Detective outfit: Brown plaid Holmes-style coat and magnifying glass 20.
- Household furnishings: Bed, table, chairs, cookware, and tableware used to furnish Lu Chen’s home 4.
- Goddess statue: An ancient milky-white statue received from the queen of Cameran Palace after an earlier act of assistance 5.
- Jirachi’s meteorite shell: Secretly retained fragments from their past encounter with Jirachi; Lu Chen requests one for Starf Berry cultivation 7.
- Great bell: Retrieved from the Pokémopolis Ruins and swallowed into storage 40.
- Dragonite’s reverse scale: Stored until Lu Chen uses it to prepare Gabite’s medicine 49.
- Starf Berries: Keeps the harvest in its alternate dimension and later produces nearly three hundred for Steven 49 85.
