Background / History
Xi Wu made his fortune developing property in the wealthy district. His wealth and connections make cooperation with the Xi Family attractive to members of the Chang Family, who bring their dogs to his dinner in hopes of cultivating business ties 14 15.
By the later chapters, he has retired and handed control of his money to his wife. Although still wealthy, he cannot readily produce a million yuan when Chang Yu threatens to demand substantial compensation for damage caused by his husky 107.
His wife’s distress over stray cats motivates their rescue work. Xi Wu handles catching cats and arranging sterilization and treatment, while she finds adopters after the animals recover. Cats that remain unadopted live in his room, eventually leaving little space for him 15 131.
Appearance
- Eyes: Amber, with a shrewd expression and visible signs of age 13 105.
- Age: Described as being in his fifties during his early encounters with Chang Yu 14.
Personality
Xi Wu enjoys a reputation for being outgoing, unpretentious, devoted to his wife, and free of romantic scandals. Privately, he is far less authoritative at home than his business standing suggests: after an unsuccessful cat-catching outing, he and his husky are made to sleep in the living room 14 16.
He is exceptionally persistent when recruiting help. Convinced that Xiaotu would make an excellent cat-catcher, he interprets the golden retriever’s obvious refusal as further proof of intelligence. Even after repeated rejection, he continues approaching both Chang Yu and Yan Junye, eventually offering Chang Yu the title of “Cat Guardian” 15 105 148.
His concern for animals coexists with exasperation toward his destructive husky, whom he physically disciplines after disruptive incidents. He speaks much more gently to the bichon Xiaoxiongxiong and praises small dogs for staying close and being easy to carry 15 43 114.
Xi Wu is also proud and sensitive about his private life. When Yan Junye mentions his bedroom banishment, he confronts Chang Yu over an alleged invasion of privacy. His shrewdness remains intact after retirement: when acting on Chang Yu’s information about animal-welfare misconduct, he publicly credits “Master Chang,” frustrating Chang Yu’s attempt to stay out of the spotlight 106 107 132.
Abilities & Skills
Animal Rescue and Care Coordination
Xi Wu operates a pet hospital and organizes regular outings to catch stray cats 15 131.
- Arranges sterilization and treatment before his wife seeks adoptive homes 131.
- Houses cats that have not been adopted 131.
- Takes responsibility for three injured dogs previously adopted by Pei Bai; two subsequently require emergency treatment 131 132.
- Defers the rescued calico’s neutering when an examination reveals a health problem that makes surgery unsuitable 148.
Business and Animal-Welfare Connections
Xi Wu retains considerable influence despite retiring from real estate 132.
- His status attracts prospective business partners from the Chang Family 14 15.
- His longstanding involvement in animal-related circles makes him better positioned than Chang Yu to intervene in animal-welfare misconduct 131.
- After receiving Chang Yu’s information, he acts against Pei Bai and the dog-show director, reporting that the director can no longer profit under the banner of animal protection 132.
Relationships
- His wife — His partner in the cat-rescue program and the person controlling their finances after his retirement. He boasts that he can handle anything she asks, but fears her anger and tries to keep domestic punishment out of public view 44 106 107 131.
- Chang Yu — A business acquaintance and recurring rescue collaborator. Their exchanges involve mutual needling, disputes over privacy, and compensation for the husky’s damage 13 43 106 107 131.
- Yan Junye — Initially encounters him while Yan Junye inhabits Xiaotu. Later formally meets him as Chang Yu’s boyfriend and again tries to recruit him to catch cats. Yan Junye uses knowledge acquired from neighborhood dogs to embarrass him 15 105 106.
- His husky — His energetic, destructive companion on nighttime outings. Xi Wu struggles to restrain it and must answer for the trouble it causes 13 43 107.
- Xiaoxiongxiong — The bichon formerly belonging to Chang Yiyuan. Xi Wu takes the dog in and treats it affectionately 70 114.
- Chang Liao — Accompanies him and other wealthy acquaintances to observe Chang Yiyuan’s activities abroad; later returns aboard the Chang Family’s chartered plane 63 66.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Recruiting Xiaotu
Xi Wu first appears following his husky during a nighttime outing. He later visits Chang Yu’s office to propose involvement in the pet industry and takes a particular interest in Xiaotu’s intelligence and agility 13 14.
At dinner, he explains that his supposed “major project” includes catching and sterilizing stray cats—not killing them, as Chang Yu and Yan Junye initially fear. He persuades Chang Yu to lend him Xiaotu, but the outing ends with the golden retriever falling asleep before reaching a cat. Xi Wu unsuccessfully tries to shake him awake 15 16.
Anniversary Banquet
- Hosts a banquet at his mountain estate, attended by Chang Yu and Xiaotu 42.
- Cannot stop his husky from charging into Chang Yu, knocking him down while he holds Xiaotu. Xi Wu disciplines the dog and apologizes 43.
- Flees when Chang Yu mentions his visit to Ke Yichun’s bar in front of his wife, who picks up a cat teaser in anger 43 44.
Privacy Dispute and Compensation
After Yan Junye returns to his human body, Xi Wu offers to handle the Pei Bai matter if he will join a cat-catching outing. Their argument shifts to Xi Wu’s marriage when Yan Junye boasts about sleeping beside Chang Yu while Xi Wu is excluded from his own bedroom 105 106.
Xi Wu confronts Chang Yu, but accepts the possibility that his wife disclosed the incident to her friends. Before he can leave, his husky breaks the company’s decorative gold piggy bank. He agrees to compensation of a few tens of thousands of yuan and promises to keep the husky at least one meter away from Yan Junye 107.
Pei Bai’s Dogs and the Rescued Calico
- Agrees to retrieve Pei Bai’s three injured dogs after hearing Chang Yu’s account of their treatment 131.
- Finally sees Yan Junye catch a kitten by trapping it beneath his body and enthusiastically celebrates the success 131.
- Allows Chang Yu to keep the calico temporarily, then receives it at his veterinary hospital 131 132.
- Publicly thanks “Master Chang” for exposing information about the animal-welfare misconduct 132.
Extra: Chang Yu Transmigrates into a Cat
Xi Wu uses news of the rescued calico to persuade Chang Yu and Yan Junye to visit his clinic. He explains that the cat has not been neutered because of a health problem 148.
During the visit, Chang Yu’s consciousness enters the calico. Without knowing this, Xi Wu readily allows Yan Junye to take the cat home because he trusts his character 148.
