Background / History
Fall and Imprisonment
According to Lucifer, he was God’s most beloved son until humanity’s creation. When God ordered the angels to bow to humans and love them above him, Lucifer refused, believing humans were murderous and would destroy creation. He claims God then ordered Michael to cast him into Hell, where he suffered for thousands of years. This account is delivered by Lucifer while defending his actions to Dean 192.
Uriel offers a sympathetic version of the rebellion, describing Lucifer as a beautiful, powerful brother punished for protecting angels. Uriel hopes Lucifer’s return will establish a world belonging to angels rather than humans 152.
Breaking the Seals
Azazel’s opening of Hell’s Gate loosens Lucifer’s imprisonment. Casey warns that his eventual release will bring the Apocalypse, while Castiel later explains that breaking sixty-six seals will free him 66 101.
Lucifer directs Azazel to find a special child carrying the blood of Cain and Abel and tells him that only Lilith can break the seals. Azazel addresses him as “Father” and promises to prepare his return 171.
Heaven’s leadership also intends to allow Lucifer’s release. Zachariah reveals that the plan is for Michael to possess Dean and fight Lucifer, even if billions of humans die 172.
At St. Mary’s Convent, Lilith reveals that she is the final seal and that Ruby has manipulated Sam into killing her. Sam initially refuses, but Lilith attacks him and provokes a lethal response. Her death opens the fissure through which Lucifer emerges 175.
Lucifer greets Sam approvingly, then identifies Bai Haorui as a “wild card” feared by both Heaven and Hell. Rather than fight immediately, he promises a future confrontation and disappears into black smoke 175.
Pursuit of Sam Winchester
While occupying Nick, Lucifer contacts Sam and offers wealth, power, and kingship in exchange for consent. He explains that Nick is only a temporary substitute and that Sam alone can perfectly contain his strength. When Sam threatens suicide, Lucifer claims he will resurrect him repeatedly until he agrees 187.
At Jasper Farm, Dean shoots Lucifer in the forehead with the Colt. Lucifer survives, recovers, and knocks Dean unconscious. He predicts that Sam will accept him in Detroit within six months and deliberately encourages Sam’s anger 210.
Lucifer also oversees a ritual for the Horsemen. The town’s able-bodied men are possessed by demons, while women and children are placed in a sacrificial pit. Bai Haorui interrupts the ritual and wounds Lucifer with pure yang true fire, but the confrontation leaves Bai gravely injured 210 211.
Battle at the Old Gods’ Gathering
Gabriel and Bai Haorui oppose Lucifer together at the gods’ gathering. Their coordination initially forces him back, but Lucifer switches to a corrosive black sword and overwhelms their defenses. He dislocates Gabriel’s wrist and nearly lands a blow capable of shattering his angel core 246 247.
The pair eventually combine Bai’s true fire with Gabriel’s origin power. Their attack drives Lucifer’s current vessel to the brink of disintegration. Although both opponents are left unable to stand, Lucifer withdraws rather than risk losing the body 248.
Possession and Return to the Cage
Before Sam’s planned surrender, Lucifer defeats Bai Haorui at a factory and breaks his peachwood sword. He reveals that he already knows about the Horsemen’s rings and the plan to return him to the cage, deliberately leaving Bai alive to witness its failure 266.
In Detroit, Lucifer exposes Sam’s attempted deception but accepts the proposed contest for control of his body. After possessing Sam, he effortlessly destroys two nearby demons, throws Dean aside, and closes the opened gate with an incantation 267.
At the cemetery, Lucifer asks Michael to abandon their ordained battle, arguing that God has made them pieces on a chessboard. Michael refuses. When Dean and the others intervene, Lucifer kills Castiel with a snap of his fingers and brutally beats Dean 268 269 270.
Dean’s appeals and the sight of a toy soldier in the Impala help Sam fight back. Bai Haorui’s Demon-Locking Formation suppresses Lucifer’s power long enough for Sam to regain control and open Hell’s Gate with the Horsemen’s rings. Sam then drags Michael into Hell with him, carrying Lucifer back into imprisonment 270.
Castiel later confirms that Lucifer and Michael remain in the core cage alongside the main portion of Sam’s soul. The cage is too dangerous for him to attempt an immediate rescue 303.
Zachariah’s 2014 Future
The future shown to Dean by Zachariah depicts Lucifer’s victory rather than an unavoidable outcome established by the main timeline 189 192 270.
| Event | Details |
|---|---|
| Sam’s failed sacrifice | On March 15, 2010, Sam accepts possession intending to shoot himself with the Colt. Lucifer suppresses him before he can act 189. |
| Destruction of the resistance | Lucifer gravely injures Bai Haorui using less than half his power and later kills Bobby while Bobby covers the others’ retreat 189. |
| Hospital confrontation | Lucifer kills the future Dean and fatally wounds the future Castiel. He tells the visiting Dean from 2009 that every choice will lead to the same defeat 192. |
| Battle with both Bai Haoruis | The two versions wound him with vengeful souls, sword attacks, and Taoist talismans. The future Bai’s final explosion leaves Lucifer severely mutilated, but he survives and withdraws 192 193. |
Appearance
Lucifer emerges from Hell as an enormous, black-winged figure wearing black robes and a silver mask. His human presentation changes with his vessel 175 187 267.
- Manifested form: Six pairs of black wings with metallic-looking feathers, pure golden eyes, and a cold, oppressive aura 175.
- Nick: Commonly wears a white suit; his face is sickly pale and his lips nearly bloodless. As the vessel deteriorates, bluish-purple veins spread across his face and neck, and skin around his eyes begins to rot 210 246 267.
- Sam: Uses Sam’s familiar appearance; at the cemetery, he wears a black jacket with his hands casually in its pockets 268.
- Blood: Described as golden during battles in the 2014 future and black during the Jasper Farm confrontation 192 193 210 211.
Personality
Lucifer presents himself with casual warmth, sympathy, and unnerving composure. He offers Sam gifts, insists that he will never lie to him, and describes their conflict as an inevitable destiny. These assurances accompany coercion: he threatens to undo Sam’s suicide, exploits his resentment, and knowingly permits the plan to imprison him because he expects to win 187 210 267.
His grievance against God centers on rejection and humanity’s favored position. He despises humans but expresses tenderness toward the natural world, carefully touching a rose while calling creation God’s last perfect masterpiece 192.
Lucifer’s confidence often becomes contempt. He compares mortals opposing him to ants confronting an elephant and initially treats Bai Haorui’s attacks as entertainment. Serious injury strips away that amusement, provoking fury, threats, and a willingness to retreat when his vessel can no longer endure the fight 193 246 248.
His feelings toward his brothers are not wholly extinguished by the war. He recalls loving and admiring Michael, appreciates Castiel’s loyalty, and asks Michael to reject their prescribed battle. Those attachments coexist with extreme violence: he nearly destroys Gabriel’s core and kills Castiel for interfering 210 247 268 269.
Abilities & Skills
Fallen Holy Power
Lucifer shapes holy power into offensive weapons, barriers, and destructive force 193 247.
- Forms black shields, forearm guards, fingertip blades, and wide-area shock waves 210 211 247.
- Creates a black longsword whose corrosive power erodes Bai Haorui’s sword runes and burns through clothing and skin 247.
- Produces a white holy-light shield strong enough to stop the future Bai Haorui’s concentrated sword thrust 193.
- Breaks talisman restraints and disrupts the Eight Trigrams Soul-Suppressing Formation with holy power 247 266.
Strength, Durability, and Recovery
Lucifer’s angelic body withstands attacks that ordinary supernatural beings cannot survive 210 247.
- Survives a direct Colt shot to the forehead and rapidly recovers 210.
- Stops Gabriel’s Archangel Blade over his heart, then dislocates Gabriel’s wrist 247.
- Breaks Bai Haorui’s peachwood sword and inflicts crippling injuries in close combat 266.
- While possessing Sam, remains uninjured by Bobby’s shotgun fire and destroys Castiel with a finger snap 269.
Possession and Mental Domination
Lucifer requires a suitable vessel to express his power fully. He identifies Sam as his true vessel and seeks his agreement to possession 187.
- Nick cannot safely contain him and progressively deteriorates 187 210 267.
- Immediately suppresses Sam after taking possession, despite knowing about Sam’s intended counterattack 267.
- Limit: Sam eventually regains control through his connection to Dean, assisted by Bai Haorui’s suppression formation 270.
Movement and Supernatural Contact
Lucifer repeatedly travels or withdraws by dissolving into black smoke 175 187 248.
- Appears behind Dean instantaneously in the 2014 future 192.
- Establishes a remote connection with Sam, though he admits that locating him and forming even a faint connection took considerable effort 187.
- Uses supernatural force to hurl Dean into a wall with a small hand gesture 267.
Rituals and Confinement
Lucifer uses rituals and supernatural restraints alongside direct combat 210 267.
- Traps Castiel inside a ring of holy fire 210.
- Conducts the Horsemen’s ritual using the town’s sacrificed inhabitants 210.
- Closes an opened gate to his cage by reciting an incantation 267.
Vulnerabilities and Limits
Lucifer is exceptionally difficult to kill, but he is neither immune to injury nor free of vessel constraints.
- Pure yang and Taoist true fire: Burns through his holy defenses, injures his meridians, and can damage his soul or essence directly 193 247 265 266.
- Vengeful souls: The future Bai Haorui’s banner allows souls to tear at his body and holy light 192.
- Vessel failure: Gabriel and Bai Haorui’s combined attack forces him to retreat because his body is close to disintegrating 248.
- The cage: The Horsemen’s rings can reopen his prison; Sam’s recovered control allows the imprisonment plan to succeed 267 270.
- Lethal opposition: Castiel states that only God or Michael can kill Lucifer, while allowing that Bai Haorui might eventually become powerful enough. This is Castiel’s assessment, not a demonstrated immunity to every other attacker 178.
Relationships
- God — Creator and father. Lucifer claims that his refusal to place humanity above God led to his punishment; he later questions whether God deliberately designed their conflict 192 268.
- Michael — Older brother and appointed opponent. Lucifer recalls loving him, resents his obedience to God, and unsuccessfully asks him to abandon their final battle 210 268.
- Gabriel — Brother who ultimately opposes him. Gabriel’s familiarity with Lucifer’s fighting habits helps him coordinate attacks with Bai Haorui 246 247.
- Sam Winchester — True vessel. Lucifer cultivates Sam’s anger and insists that his consent is inevitable; Sam ultimately overcomes him long enough to return him to the cage 187 210 270.
- Dean Winchester — Enemy and Sam’s strongest emotional connection. Lucifer admires Dean’s courage but fails to extinguish the bond that enables Sam’s resistance 192 270.
- Nick — Temporary vessel whose body decays under the strain of containing him 187 210 267.
- Bai Haorui — Mortal adversary whom Lucifer recognizes as a threat to both Heaven and Hell. Bai repeatedly wounds him and helps suppress him during Sam’s final resistance 175 248 266 270.
- Castiel — Rebellious angel Lucifer attempts to recruit by emphasizing their shared opposition to Heaven. Castiel refuses; Lucifer later kills him at the cemetery 210 269.
- Azazel — Devoted servant who addresses him as “Father” and searches for the child needed for his plans 171.
- Lilith — Trusted subordinate and final seal. She willingly dies to secure his release 126 175.
- Ruby — Follower who manipulates Sam into killing Lilith because she believes Lucifer will win the war 175.
- Uriel — Angelic supporter who kills fellow angels and works toward Lucifer’s awakening 152.
- Crowley — Demonic opponent who believes Lucifer regards demons as disposable servants and will eliminate them after humanity 208.
