Background / History
Karen’s death and entry into hunting
Bobby was an ordinary man when a demon possessed his wife, Karen. Unable to perform an exorcism and watching her hurt other people, he shot her to stop the demon. Her death led him into hunting so that others would not face the same helplessness. Although he became an experienced hunter, he continued to blame himself for killing her 76 95.
His hunting career brought him into contact with John Winchester, Ellen and her husband, Rufus, and numerous other hunters. Not every case ended successfully: two sisters drowned after a water ghost took them while Bobby was still searching their house. Their deaths remained another source of guilt 99 207.
Supporting the Winchesters against Azazel
Bobby opposed John Winchester’s attempt to summon a demon to save Dean, warning that the price would be John’s soul and could endanger Sam as well 30.
When Meg possessed Sam, Bobby exposed her by offering him beer laced with holy water. He helped the others restrain her and burned the Demon-Sealing Spell after Bai Haorui pierced Sam’s marked arm. Once Sam expelled Meg, Bobby urged the group to leave before Steve Wandell’s friends arrived seeking revenge for Steve’s murder 45.
Bobby’s records on missing children with supernatural abilities helped the search for Sam after Azazel’s abduction scheme began. At Cold Oak, he fought through demons and shot Jake in the leg after Jake stabbed Sam, but arrived too late to prevent Sam’s death. He blamed himself for not finding the location sooner 53 54.
After Sam returned, Bobby helped investigate Azazel’s plan to open Hell’s Gate. Dean privately admitted to him that he had sold his soul. Azazel’s defeat did not reassure Bobby completely: he warned that stronger demons remained at large 56 57.
Dean’s contract and death
Bobby spent long nights searching angelic texts and records of Hell’s contracts for a way to save Dean. During the Mystery Spot crisis, he also researched a ritual to summon the being identified in his sources as Loki and tried to stop Sam from sacrificing himself through forbidden methods 80 81.
Despite Dean’s attempts to leave him behind, Bobby joined the confrontation with Lilith. He prepared a holy-water sprinkler system and accompanied the brothers into the house while Bai Haorui defended the perimeter. When Dean died, Bobby comforted Sam and initially urged that Dean’s body be salted and burned according to hunter custom. He ultimately accepted keeping the body intact 92 93 94 95.
During the following four months, Bobby housed the severely injured Bai Haorui and tried unsuccessfully to maintain contact with Sam. When Dean returned, Bobby tested him with silver and holy water before accepting that he was truly alive, then helped reunite him with Sam 95 96.
The seals and Sam’s addiction
When dead victims began attacking hunters, Bobby identified the Mark of the Witness and the spell Rise of the Witnesses. He established that the killings were part of Lilith’s effort to break the Apocalypse’s seals, found a counterspell, and performed it while the others held off the ghosts 98 99 100 101.
Bobby also sheltered Bai Haorui during cultivation seclusion, personally agreeing to guard the basement while he attempted a dangerous breakthrough 133.
After Dean and Bai Haorui witnessed Sam drinking demon blood, Bobby helped confine Sam in his protected basement room for withdrawal. Sam later escaped with Castiel’s assistance. Confronted in the scrapyard, Sam exploited Bobby’s love for him, took his shotgun, punched him, and drove away. Bobby subsequently urged Dean not to repeat John’s mistake of pushing Sam away 167 170 171.
Possession, paralysis, and recovery
A demon possessing Bobby attacked Dean and accepted Ruby’s Knife from Meg, who wanted Bobby to witness himself killing someone he regarded as a son. Bobby briefly overcame the possession and stabbed himself instead, destroying the demon but sustaining a severe spinal injury 177 178.
Castiel, cut off from much of Heaven’s power, could not heal him. Bai Haorui began repairing Bobby’s nerves with True Gang, but recovery was slow. Months in a wheelchair left Bobby feeling useless despite his continued research and coordination work. During Patrick’s lifespan-gambling case, he admitted that he had considered suicide; Dean and Bai Haorui insisted that his value to their family had never depended on his ability to fight 178 193 200 201.
Bai Haorui continued treatment with needles and True Gang. Bobby eventually regained his mobility and returned to fieldwork, fighting a ghoul with a handgun and silver axe. Dean and Sam later found him standing comfortably at his desk, cleaning a gun 206 207 208.
Karen’s return
When Karen was resurrected, Bobby refused to accept the brothers’ warnings that the returned dead would become dangerous. Even after another resurrected resident turned violent, he ordered Dean and Sam off his property and insisted that he would handle Karen himself if necessary 223.
Bai Haorui’s Soul Deliverance Formation gave the untransformed resurrected residents one final day of clarity before their souls faded. Bobby was able to say goodbye to Karen without killing her again. He then revealed her message: Death had targeted the town because Bobby was helping Sam resist Lucifer. Bobby refused to let the attack break his resolve 224.
Fighting the Apocalypse
Bobby researched the Four Horsemen, supplied leads on Pestilence, and identified the storm that would accompany Death’s appearance in Chicago. Crowley’s help locating Death came at a cost: he held Bobby’s soul as collateral 193 249 258.
As the group considered Sam’s plan to trap Lucifer, Bobby defended Sam’s capacity for good and reminded Dean how often his brother had risked himself for others. He challenged Dean to distinguish fear of losing the battle from fear of losing Sam 263.
Castiel later revived Bobby and healed Dean, but could not repair Bai Haorui’s damaged soul and severe injuries. Bobby offered Bai Haorui a place to recover and urged him not to blame himself for the outcome 271.
Crowley and the Campbell investigation
Bobby knew for a year that Sam was alive but withheld the information from Dean, believing Dean deserved the ordinary family life he had found with Lisa and Ben. Dean was furious when he learned the truth; Bobby nevertheless maintained that he had wanted to protect Dean’s chance at happiness 274.
With Crowley still holding his soul, Bobby attempted to trap and bargain with him. Crowley countered with a hellhound, forcing Bobby to release him. Bobby then interrogated another demon, learned Crowley’s human name—Fergus MacLeod—and worked with Rufus and Bai Haorui to obtain leverage through Crowley’s son Gavin and his signet ring 288 289 291 292.
Bobby and Bai Haorui subsequently destroyed a nest of forty-seven vampires. Bobby recovered recruitment records, a map of additional nests, and documents implicating Samuel Campbell and the Campbell Family. After Sam admitted that he was missing his soul, Bobby helped treat his injuries while the group turned its attention to Samuel’s connection with Hell 297 302.
Alternate 2014 future
In the ruined future shown to Dean, Lucifer killed Bobby at his house while Bobby covered the others’ retreat. The future Bai Haorui witnessed Lucifer crush Bobby’s heart and cited Bobby’s death, together with Sam’s loss, as a reason he turned to consuming souls for power. This death belongs to the future scenario, not Bobby’s continuing present-day storyline 189 193.
Appearance
- Weathered features: Wrinkled face, graying beard or rough stubble, and heavily callused hands 80 167 225.
- Usual clothing: Plaid shirts and an old baseball cap; his frayed brown cap is specifically noted during his hospitalization 167 178 225.
- Temporary disability: Used a wheelchair following his spinal injury, before Bai Haorui’s treatment restored his ability to walk and fight 178 206 207.
Personality
Bobby is blunt, suspicious, and quick to curse, especially when younger hunters neglect precautions. His criticism usually comes with practical help: he scolds Dean while treating his wounds, improvises weapon advice over the phone, and refuses to abandon the brothers when their enemies become more dangerous 31 53 89 92.
He treats Dean, Sam, and Bai Haorui as family. That attachment drives both selfless acts and difficult decisions, from resisting possession to protect Dean to concealing Sam’s return in the hope that Dean could remain outside hunting. His protective instincts can also cloud his judgment, most clearly when he rejects warnings about Karen’s resurrection 95 177 223 274.
Beneath his toughness, Bobby carries deep guilt over people he could not save. Karen’s death becomes the center of his nightmare imprisonment, while paralysis exposes his fear that he has become a burden. He responds strongly to reminders that his knowledge, experience, and presence matter independently of his combat ability 76 99 201 206.
His patience has limits. Under the pressure of Crowley holding his soul and numerous hunters relying on him, he erupts at Dean for behaving as though only the Winchesters have problems 291.
