| True Gang combat development | 137 138 | Demonstrates projected True Gang, a Gang Qi longsword, protective barriers, and purple-gold fire fused with True Gang. These passages do not name the breakthrough that produced this development. |
| Late stage — Refining Qi into Gang | 242 | Refines a powerful divinity during the gathering of old gods, breaking through an already loosened cultivation barrier. |
| Residual divine-power obstruction cleared | 247 | Lucifer’s blow disperses remaining divine power inside him, allowing his True Gang to flow more smoothly. No new realm is named. |
| Post-seclusion refinement; realm unspecified | 272 275 | Develops a soul-targeting fire seed and refines his weapons during prolonged seclusion. Emerges after 357 days, injured but alive; attainment of Refining Spirit and Returning to Emptiness is not confirmed. |
Background / History
Family Inheritance and Transmigration
Bai Haorui grew up around his grandfather’s Chinese funeral home in Los Angeles. He watched him use glutinous rice, ink lines, and other protective practices, while listening to accounts of water ghosts and Painted Skin Ghosts. Before dying, his grandfather gave him a red pouch containing three Five Emperor Coins and told him to keep them close to ward off disaster. The coins were the only old possession he brought with him when he transmigrated 1.
By the opening chapter, he has lived in the new world for two years and befriended Sam at Stanford. His host body’s parents died in a truck crash before the host entered Stanford. After examining supernatural records, Bai questions the official explanation: the remembered weather contradicts the report, and a strange claw mark was found on the steering wheel 1 3.
Joining the Winchesters
Dean’s arrival makes Bai recognize the world as Supernatural. Knowing the danger facing Sam and Jessica, he volunteers to accompany the brothers and offers his family’s evil-warding methods. His system awakens while he packs for the journey 2 3.
His inherited tools quickly become practical hunting weapons. In Black Pine Town, his ink line identifies a shapeshifter impersonating Dean and restrains it so Dean can kill it with a willowwood nail. Later, an anchor-point symbol links the demon network to signs associated with his host parents’ deaths, convincing Bai that the Yellow-Eyed Demon was involved and prompting him to promise revenge 10 17.
True Fire Cultivation and Dean’s Contract
After surviving god-summoning, Bai begins cultivating the Three Altars Body-Tempering True Fire Art. He deliberately seeks strength beyond supporting the brothers with talismans and formations, enduring repeated, painful meridian tempering to become a frontline fighter 57 58.
His growing power does not remove his concern for innocent lives. When Sam shoots Casey and Father Gil despite the possibility of saving their possessed hosts, Bai joins Dean and Bobby in confronting him. He also discovers Sam’s contact with Ruby and resolves to strengthen himself without abandoning his protective purpose 66.
Inside Jeremy’s dream, Bai confronts a version of himself consumed by power and slaughter. He destroys it by sending purifying fire through the weapon impaling his own shoulder, then helps free Dean and escape the collapsing dream. His breakthrough is followed by extensive training during the Mystery Spot time loop 77 78 79 80.
Heaven, Hell, and the Apocalypse
Bai becomes increasingly involved in conflicts with angels. After killing the demon commander Liegu and the angel Cassiel, he is pursued while severely wounded; an angler named Dahl later rescues him after a river carries him downstream. Bai sends Dahl away when his pursuers return 138 140.
He exposes Uriel’s murders and role in freeing Alastair, intervenes when Uriel overpowers Castiel, and absorbs Uriel’s angelic energy. He subsequently warns Dean that the angels want the Apocalypse and races toward St. Mary’s Convent through successive demonic and heavenly ambushes. He arrives too late to prevent Sam from killing Lilith and releasing Lucifer 152 170 173 174 175.
An encounter with his 2014 counterpart shows him a possible future in which grief has turned him into a soul-devouring killer. In his own ongoing struggle, Bai repeatedly challenges stronger enemies: Lucifer gravely wounds him, Michael’s projection nearly kills him during an escape, and a later joint assault with Gabriel still fails to defeat Lucifer 188 189 211 239 247.
Stull Cemetery and Seclusion
Before the confrontation involving the Horsemen’s rings, Bai attacks Lucifer alone and burns away a small portion of his essence. Lucifer breaks his peachwood sword and leaves him critically injured. Bai nevertheless secretly activates the Soul-Burning Art, later resorting to another forbidden technique to keep fighting despite the gap between himself and an archangel 265 266 268.
Sam ultimately throws Bai clear before jumping into Hell’s cage at Stull Cemetery, asking him to care for Dean and the others. During his subsequent seclusion, Bai repeatedly revisits that moment. Although he senses Sam’s return roughly half a year later, he remains in cultivation because he believes returning without sufficient strength would leave him unable to protect anyone from another archangel-level enemy 272.
Sam’s Missing Soul and the Campbells
After 357 days, Bai emerges and discovers that a large part of Sam’s soul is missing. He also detects Hell-contract energy on Samuel Campbell and stays with Bobby to recover and investigate the Campbells’ resurrection, Crowley’s involvement, and the monsters’ unusual activity 275.
He later protects a baby while fighting the Alpha Shapeshifter and intervenes when Raphael tries to force Castiel back to Heaven. At the Campbell outpost, he identifies Crowley’s contract branded on Samuel’s soul and secretly scorches its edge 278 285 304.
Appearance
- Face: Refined, handsome features, a prominent brow, and a straight nose; often carries a reserved expression around strangers 61 211.
- Hair and eyes: Black hair, sometimes secured with a wooden hairpin; dark eyes that flash purple when he uses his power 61 78.
- Distinguishing marks: A tiny mole at the corner of his mouth and a lotus seal between his brows 188.
- Lotus seal: Described as pale golden or pale purple at different points; normally concealed beneath his skin in later appearances and faintly luminous during power use 211 277.
- Clothing: Frequently wears black tracksuits, combat clothes, or durable outdoor jackets, with a ritual pouch at his waist and a peachwood sword across his back 61 217 277.
Personality
Bai’s central principle is protection rather than strength for its own sake. He regards Sam, Dean, and Bobby as family, and this attachment becomes the foundation of his cultivation. His dream counterpart embodies the opposing temptation: acquiring power through indiscriminate consumption and slaughter. Bai rejects that path even when it appears stronger 77 78.
He is especially unwilling to treat innocent people as expendable. He objects to killing possessed hosts who could be exorcised, rescues a girl from a witch sacrifice, and fights the Alpha Shapeshifter while keeping a baby shielded against his body. However, he will kill when he believes someone is beyond saving, as with Jake after his complete transformation into a Rugaru 66 109 184 278.
His loyalty can become self-destructive. He conceals the risks of his cultivation, treats others while his own meridians remain damaged, and repeatedly goes ahead alone to face stronger enemies. Dean recognizes that once Bai decides to protect the brothers, he is almost impossible to dissuade 57 211 265.
Outside combat, Bai is irreverent and teasing: he doodles caricatures during lectures, jokes with Sam, and complains about Americanized Chinese food. His reserve also has a harder edge. Recalling childhood bullying, he explains that he stopped enduring abuse only after violently targeting the ringleader 1 5 142.
Abilities & Skills
Three Altars True Fire Cultivation
- Pure Yang True Fire: Burns and purifies sinister energy, damages supernatural enemies, and strengthens weapons and protective techniques 60 65 79.
- Body tempering: Strengthens flesh, muscles, and bones. At fifth level, he can withstand the Crocotta’s claws with only a shallow injury 79 85.
- Hunting refinement: Converts absorbed sinister energy into usable power after purification. Bai explicitly warns that consuming unpurified evil origins risks corruption and backlash 60 64 77.
- Divine-energy absorption: Refines energy from evil gods, absorbs Uriel’s angelic energy through True Fire Soul Devouring, and later uses divinity to achieve a breakthrough 72 152 242.
- Cultivation insight: Comes to understand “Three Altars” as tempering past, present, future, and his possible selves. “Unique across all worlds” is presented as the art’s ultimate goal, not a realm he has attained 155.
Fire Techniques and True Gang
- True Fire Slash: Channels fire through his sword; develops from a short golden flame blade into much larger sword-energy attacks 59 66 173.
- Purple Flame Heaven-Burning Slash: An original technique developed in the time loop, releasing a large purple fire blade with far greater force than his basic horizontal cleave 79.
- True Fire Defense: Eight Trigrams Guard: Forms a curved shield reinforced with Eight Trigrams patterns to resist sinister forces 77.
- True Fire Pierce: Pure Yang Bone Penetration: Condenses fire into fine needles aimed at weaknesses in an opponent’s energy 77.
- Purple Flame Demon-Locking Array: Uses protective intent to create purifying chains that restrain bodies formed from sinister obsession 77.
- Malignancy-Purifying True Fire Seal: Combines Daoist purification with the intimidating force of Nezha’s divinity against malignant spirits 69.
- True Fire Mimicry: Shapes fire into practical constructs, including a Purple Flame Peregrine Falcon and binding fire vines 79 83.
- True Gang projection: Produces barriers, needles, sword forms, and ground-erupting attacks; can also deflect a thrown weapon back toward its user 137 138 175.
Spiritual Perception and Investigation
- Evil Identification: System-unlocked skill that identifies the core obsession of a vengeful spirit 5.
- Spiritual Sense / Divine Sense: Surveys buildings, distinguishes supernatural auras, tracks opponents without direct sight, and allows covert listening 60 78 79 152.
- Large-group detection: Identifies exactly 127 demons surrounding an abandoned factory 167.
- Soul and contract examination: Detects Sam’s missing soul fragment and Hell-contract traces on Samuel and the resurrected Campbell hunters 275 277 304.
- Origin-Tracing Formation: Replays the shooting of Dean and Sam to identify their killers 225.
- Limits: His early divination cannot fully resolve Sam’s condition through heavy sinister interference, and his spiritual detection fails to penetrate an unusually powerful stranger’s mixed aura 45 60.
Talismans, Formations, and Rituals
- Binding and attack: Uses Soul-Subduing Talismans, Demon-Burning Talismans, and evil-breaking talismans; can draw thirty-six Demon-Burning Talismans in midair 65 93 307.
- Protection and concealment: Uses Clear Heart, King Kong, and aura-concealing talismans to steady the mind, reinforce defense, and suppress his presence 186 194.
- Five Elements confinement: Refines his coins into a stronger Five Elements Confinement Array and later cages Raphael, though the archangel’s power cracks the coins 272 285.
- Purification rituals: Clears lingering resentment from the waters around Key West after destroying the polluting monster 170.
- Heavenly Eye Opening Spell: Uses blood essence and an incantation while investigating the Horseman of War’s influence 194.
- Formation backlash: Destruction of a formation can injure his internal organs and disrupt his True Gang 196.
Martial Arts and Footwork
- Unarmed combat: Trains inch punches, elbow strikes, leg locks, throws, and grappling during the time loop 79.
- Named strikes: Uses Mountain-Collapsing Elbow and Stone-Splitting Inch Punch, combining physical strength with penetrating true fire 83.
- Swordsmanship: Builds his style around cleaving, thrusting, rising slashes, sweeping, and intercepting; targets vital organs, joints, and supernatural energy weaknesses 79 138 237.
- Ink-line combat: Uses a fire-coated ink line for lashing, binding, coiling, constricting, and tripping at range 79.
- Movement arts: Employs Gang Step Wandering Dragon, Seven Stars Gang Steps, and Bagua Steps. Bagua Steps specifically disperse an enemy’s impact into the ground 118 217 278.
Healing and Life Preservation
- Self-repair: Uses true fire and True Gang to expel venom or invading demonic energy, stop bleeding, and repair damaged tissue 83 93 138 175.
- Treatment of others: Restores Old Ryan’s sight and prepares to clear stagnant blood from Joe’s internal injuries despite his own damaged meridians 170 211.
- Emergency stabilization: Preserves Dean and Sam’s bodies by supporting their heart meridians while their souls are in Heaven 225.
- Rejuvenation: Uses True Gang, green vital energy, and a taiji diagram to reverse his own magically aged condition; the process takes hours and is mentally exhausting 202.
- Limits: Severe archangel attacks can overwhelm his defenses, empty his dantian, and leave him unconscious or unable to stand 211 266.
Forbidden Techniques
- Soul-Burning Art: Secretly begins using it to recover strength after Lucifer critically injures him 266.
- Burn Gang and Explode Qi: Forces True Gang through his meridians to sharply increase his power. Causes painful meridian swelling and trades his remaining reserves for time rather than enabling him to overpower an archangel 268.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Five Emperor Coins: His grandfather’s original red pouch contains three coins. Later passages show five; after seclusion, he aligns them with metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, doubling their combined confinement power 1 81 272.
- Peachwood sword: Inscribed with Three-Five Evil-Slaying Talismans and repeatedly nurtured with true fire. Lucifer breaks it; Bai later reforges it with powdered hundred-year-old lightning-struck peachwood and his natal blood essence 64 79 266 272.
- Ink line: Detects and binds supernatural creatures. Fire infusion later turns it into a three-zhang-long purple whip for ranged restraint and close defense 10 79.
- Grandfather’s notebook / Expelling Evil: Records supernatural cases and traditional countermeasures, including the use of aged glutinous rice, ink lines, and peachwood against water ghosts 3 4 21.
- Ritual pouch: Holds refined coins and yellow cinnabar talismans during later hunts 277.
- Baleful-Energy-Breaking Liquid: Disperses much of the black mist surrounding the entity called Death in the Pastor Jim case and can be applied to his sword 18.
Relationships
- Sam Winchester — Stanford friend and chosen brother. Bai helps free him from Meg, challenges his willingness to kill possessed hosts, and later investigates his missing soul 1 45 66 275.
- Dean Winchester — Hunting partner and chosen brother. Dean identifies the real Bai by his willingness to protect innocents, contrasting him with a passive djinn illusion. Bai supports him through his Hell contract and guilt over breaking the first seal 52 78 152.
- Bobby — Trusted ally and part of Bai’s chosen family. Provides shelter and medical care; Bai stays with him after seclusion to recover and investigate Sam’s condition 77 211 275.
- Grandfather — Teacher and source of his inherited Daoist practices. Leaves him the original Five Emperor Coins and records that guide his early hunts 1 3 4.
- Host body’s parents — Their suspicious deaths become a personal obligation. Bai connects the evidence to the Yellow-Eyed Demon’s anchor network and promises vengeance 3 17.
- Castiel — Ally whose actions Bai sometimes distrusts. Bai exposes Uriel to him, helps defeat Uriel, restores him after Jessie’s intervention, and protects him from Raphael 152 199 285.
- Gabriel — Temporary combat partner against Lucifer. Bai uses his coins and his own body to protect Gabriel during their failed joint assault 247.
- Lucifer — Recurring enemy whom Bai can wound but cannot defeat head-on in the documented encounters. Lucifer recognizes him as a threat, while repeatedly exploiting the difference in their power 175 211 247 266.
- Samuel Campbell — Object of suspicion because of Hell-contract traces. Bai later identifies Crowley’s contract directly on his soul 275 304.
Alternate Selves
| Version | Nature | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Dream Bai Haorui | Embodiment of his greed for power and desire for slaughter, freed from his commitment to protection | Uses corrupted fire and devours unpurified power. Bai destroys him through purification, triggering his fourth-level breakthrough 77. |
| 2014 Bai Haorui | Future counterpart encountered five years ahead of his 2009 self | After losing family and friends, devours souls, refines a Ten Thousand Souls Banner, and turns his fire into black Netherworld True Fire. Despite becoming at least ten times stronger than the visiting Bai, he still cannot defeat Lucifer 188 189. |
| Parallel-world counterparts | Other possible versions of himself, sharing the same soul origin | Their connection helps preserve a sliver of awareness against angelic interference and informs his understanding of the True Fire Art 153 155. |
Notable Quotes
“The general principles of the Three Altars Body-Tempering True Fire Art clearly state, ‘Let protection be the guide and true fire the wings.’ Without feelings or anyone to protect, you’re a demon no matter how powerful you become.” 77
“Whether it’s demons, Lilith, or so-called fate, no matter how hard Dean’s contract is to break, we’ll shoulder it together. We’re family, aren’t we?” 78
