Arc 7The Vineyard Tournament

Lynn cured Duchess Caroberta, exposed the enchanted assassins, and recruited allies before helping restore safety to Toussaint. When the duchess offered him a vineyard, Lynn arranged for it to become the tournament champion’s prize and prepared to enter in disguise.

  • Lynn sought the Lady of the Lake’s help for Duchess Caroberta and passed her trial by destroying Dagon’s cult and retrieving its sacred portrait.
  • The Lady of the Lake removed Lynn’s mark and gave him holy water, which Fringilla used to purge the demon’s power from the duchess.
  • Lynn reenacted an old elven surrender ceremony in the palace collection room, awakening Tivethas’s enchanted statues and killing the assassins who had attacked the duchess.
  • Lynn found Letho in Beauclair’s sewers, helped him rescue Tyensail from a Nekker nest, and persuaded Letho and the Viper witchers to consider traveling north with him.
  • Lynn warned Tyensail that the attack on the duchess could provoke violence against nonhumans, and Tyensail agreed to leave Toussaint with him.
  • Lynn met Dettlaff and invited a doll from his shop to join him and Regis in Novigrad, then set out with Geralt to hunt Toussaint’s bandits.
  • Lynn and Geralt killed more than three hundred bandits, and Duchess Caroberta rewarded them with an offer of Castel Ravello Vineyard after she awoke.
  • Lynn arranged for the vineyard to be the tournament champion’s prize, parted ways with Geralt, disguised himself with Fringilla’s Glamarye, and prepared to enter the tournament.
Chapters 152–176 Vol. 2 Read

Ch. 152I came, I saw, I sought Vigo

Lynn and his companions examined Duchess Caroberta and Regis determined that a demon’s power caused her affliction. They left Beauclair to investigate, while Regis revealed that he had once resisted a tempting offer from Gaunter O’Dimm.

  • Lynn suspected the unnamed witcher who had visited the duchess was from the School of the Viper, whose stronghold had been destroyed by Nilfgaard’s usurper emperor.
  • Lynn, Geralt, and Regis examined Duchess Caroberta, and Regis concluded that a demon’s power had caused her condition.
  • Earl Raymond learned that the visitors had left and struck a servant who speculated about who might rule if the duchess died.
  • Lynn and his companions rode away from Beauclair as Lynn asked Regis about demons.
  • Regis said that he had once met Gaunter O’Dimm, who had offered him tempting terms that Regis had managed to refuse.

Ch. 153The Lady of the Lake descended before me

Lynn summoned Fringilla’s illusion at camp and claimed he knew how to save Duchess Caroberta. At Lac Célavy, he called upon the Lady of the Lake for healing holy water, but she refused to interfere, so Lynn asked the others to leave while he spoke with her privately.

  • Lynn spoke with Fringilla’s illusion and denied discovering anything suspicious, but said he had learned how to save Duchess Caroberta.
  • Lynn asked Fringilla to remain at court and promised to request the information she had withheld when he returned.
  • Lynn’s group reached Lac Célavy, where the Lady of the Lake rose from the water in response to his greeting.
  • Lynn asked the Lady of the Lake for holy water to cure Duchess Caroberta, citing Maksymilian and Toussaint’s knights-errant.
  • The Lady of the Lake said she could not interfere with mortal life and death, and Lynn asked Geralt, Regis, and Maksymilian to leave so he could speak with her privately.

Ch. 154Say my name!

Lynn persuaded the Lady of the Lake to grant holy water to save Duchess Caroberta, agreeing to retrieve a desecrated sacred relic from the cultists of Dagon. At the edge of the dangerous swamp, Lynn used a scroll to dispel the fog and reveal the village.

  • Maksymilian, Regis, and Geralt waited outside Lac Célavy while Lynn negotiated with the Lady of the Lake.
  • Lynn promised to spread the Lady of the Lake’s faith in Toussaint, and she agreed to help if he passed her trial.
  • The Lady of the Lake sent Lynn to purge the cultists of Dagon in Innsmouth and retrieve their sacred relic.
  • Lynn told Geralt, Regis, and Maksymilian that the relic would let the goddess save Duchess Caroberta.
  • Several days later, the group reached a fog-shrouded swamp, and Maksymilian warned that knights and court mage Artorius Vigo had feared entering it.
  • Lynn opened a scroll that dispelled the fog and revealed a village in the swamp.

Ch. 155The shadow over Innsmouth

Lynn, Geralt, Maksymilian, and Regis crossed a trap-filled swamp and found a decaying village tied to Dagon’s cult. After discovering tracks leading to a cave, they encountered villagers with fishlike features guarding its entrance.

  • Lynn demonstrated the swamp’s hidden spike traps, and Maksymilian agreed to follow the witchers’ lead.
  • Lynn found a corroded locket that Maksymilian identified as belonging to Thorin Oakenshield, a missing former captain of the Ducal Guard.
  • The party reached a damp, deserted village covered in barnacles, where no animals or insects could be heard.
  • Regis found webbed footprints leading toward the mountain, and the group followed them to a cave beside the swamp.
  • The party saw hunchbacked villagers with bulging eyes, quivering jaws, and webbed feet guarding the cave with pitchforks.

Ch. 156Simping to the End

Lynn, Geralt, Regis, and Maksymilian fought their way into the cave where the Innsmouth cultists had gathered. After Regis scouted a submerged passage, the group surfaced in the cult’s assembly hall and was spotted, triggering an alarm.

  • Lynn refused Maksymilian’s request to join the fight at the cave entrance and prepared potions with Geralt.
  • Lynn and Geralt quickly killed the cultists guarding the entrance, then entered the cave with Maksymilian and Regis.
  • Regis turned into mist, scouted the underwater passage, and reported that cultists were gathered beyond it.
  • Lynn, Geralt, and Maksymilian followed Regis through the icy water, with the witchers guiding the nearly blind Maksymilian.
  • The group surfaced in a vast assembly hall and saw dozens of cultists worshipping a towering, faceless sea creature portrait.
  • A cultist priest spotted them, and his shrill hiss alerted the entire assembly.

Ch. 157The enemy is shamed! I shall strip him!

Lynn, Geralt, Maksymilian, and Regis fought off the Dagon cultists while the cultist priest transformed into a monstrous fish-like warrior. Lynn killed the priest with his silver sword and an Aard Sign, ending the battle against the monster.

  • Lynn and the others held back the cultists as the witcher medallion warned him of danger.
  • Lynn spotted the priest performing a ritual, during which the priest absorbed the elite cultists and mutated into a fish-headed monster.
  • Maksymilian killed a cultist who had attacked him, while Regis distracted the monster with his mist form.
  • Lynn blasted a path through the cultists and wounded the monster’s knee and palm with his sword and bombs.
  • Lynn climbed onto the monster’s back and drove his sword into its neck, then used Aard to force the blade through its bone and kill it.

Ch. 158Dagon was a god, and so was the Lady of the Lake

After killing the cultists, Lynn resisted Dagon’s mental attack but discovered that the evil god had marked him. As the group traveled back toward Lac Célavy, Lynn reassured Maksymilian about Regis and revealed that Regis was a higher vampire.

  • Lynn used Heliotrop Signs to dispel Dagon’s illusion, then found a new Mark of the Deep Sea on his status panel.
  • Lynn told Geralt and Regis he was fine and decided he could ask the Lady of the Lake to remove the mark when he turned in the quest.
  • The group left the swamp after setting fire to the ruined village and headed back toward Lac Célavy.
  • Maksymilian privately asked Lynn whether Regis was dangerous, and Lynn argued that Regis had helped save the duchess and had not harmed them.
  • Lynn told Maksymilian that Regis was a powerful higher vampire, and Maksymilian reflexively checked his neck for bite marks.

Ch. 159Lynn was here, and the duchess could be saved

Lynn and his companions returned to Lac Célavy, where the Lady of the Lake destroyed Dagon’s portrait, removed Lynn’s Mark of the Deep Sea, and gave him a one-use grail of holy water. Fringilla used the holy water to cleanse Duchess Caroberta of demonic power, though the duchess remained unconscious, and Earl Raymond rewarded the group while they awaited her recovery.

  • Lynn explained Regis’s abstinence from blood to Maksymilian and persuaded him to swear an oath never to reveal Regis’s identity.
  • Lynn presented the Lady of the Lake with the cultists’ portrait of Dagon, which she destroyed with white light.
  • The Lady of the Lake removed Lynn’s Mark of the Deep Sea, granted him the Detect Evil feat, and gave him a one-use grail of holy water.
  • Fringilla gave the holy water to Duchess Caroberta and confirmed that the demonic power in her body had been completely removed, although she had not awakened.
  • Earl Raymond thanked Lynn, Geralt, Regis, and Maksymilian and paid each of them 450 Florins, promising further rewards if the duchess recovered.

Ch. 160There is only one truth

Lynn investigated the attempt on Duchess Caroberta’s life and discussed how Earl Raymond could have benefited from her death. Fringilla revealed she shared Lynn’s suspicions, but Lynn rejected the theory and hinted that the truth was different.

  • Lynn stayed at the palace with Geralt, Regis, and Maksymilian, and asked Triss to intercept Palmerin, Milton, Renauld, and their companions.
  • Lynn questioned Maksymilian about the assassination attempt and learned that the duchess and her maid had been found in an underground collection room with only one exit.
  • Fringilla helped Lynn gain access to the collection room by persuading its guards that she could mention their conduct to the recovering duchess.
  • Lynn reasoned that Earl Raymond might have arranged the attack to seize power in Toussaint and marry his son to one of the duchess’s daughters.
  • Fringilla agreed with Lynn’s theory, but Lynn said it was wrong and that the truth was different.

Ch. 161An assassination from a thousand years ago

Lynn ruled out Earl Raymond as the person who poisoned the duchess and learned that a Viper School witcher had taken a contract from Orianna. In the collection room, Lynn began reenacting a thousand-year-old assassination, leaving the outcome unresolved.

  • Lynn argued that Earl Raymond could not have poisoned the duchess because he had not tried to stop them or keep them from the sickroom.
  • Fringilla described the Viper School witcher as a bald, imposing man and said he had taken a contract to find the missing elven smith Tyensail for Orianna.
  • Lynn examined the collection room and noticed three lifelike elven statues that seemed to have been made with petrification magic.
  • Lynn asked Fringilla to arrange torches, elven food, wine, a sword, and a shield, then had her wear the ducal signet ring and sit in an ornate chair.
  • Lynn recited the story of Tivethas inviting the first Duke of Toussaint into his palace as he began the reenactment.

Ch. 162Someone remembered your choice

Lynn stopped an assassination attempt on Fringilla by activating the magic in the elven statues and killing the attackers. He explained how the statues were enchanted, gave Fringilla the dagger carrying the demonic power behind the Duchess's coma, and left to visit Orianna.

  • Lynn reenacted the elven surrender ceremony, awakening Tivethas's enchanted statues, and used a Yrden Trap to slow the assassins as he killed them.
  • Fringilla burned the final assassin with a fireball and demanded to know why Lynn had not warned her.
  • Lynn gave Fringilla the dagger bearing the demonic power that had kept the Duchess unconscious, allowing her to claim credit for the discovery.
  • Lynn explained how Tivethas had enchanted his soldiers as statues and how the Duchess's reenactment of the surrender ceremony had activated them.
  • Lynn left the palace for Orianna's Beauclair residence, having given Fringilla credit to ease her jealousy and bring her closer to his plans.

Ch. 163Mr. Letho, the School of the Viper Witcher Who Preferred to Remain Anonymous

Lynn learned that Letho, a fellow witcher, had taken Orianna’s contract to rescue an elven master smith from Beauclair’s sewers. After finding Letho wounded underground, Lynn gave him a powerful healing potion, and Letho agreed to work with him and offer him most of the reward.

  • Lynn asked Orianna about the anonymous witcher who had accepted her contract, and she said he had not returned from the sewers.
  • Lynn spent three days exploring Beauclair’s sewers, killing Nekkers and discovering their traps.
  • Lynn encountered Letho in the sewers and learned that Letho had come specifically to find him.
  • Lynn gave the wounded Letho a Superior White Raffard’s Decoction, which eased his injuries.
  • Letho agreed to work with Lynn, offered him seventy percent of the contract reward, and asked why Lynn had come looking for him.

Ch. 164Letho, I'll make you an offer you can't refuse

Lynn offered Letho and the other surviving Viper witchers steady pay and expenses, but Letho remained wary of his motives. After learning that a vast Nekker pack might guard the elven grandmaster blacksmith, Lynn and Letho prepared to face it and advanced toward its nest.

  • Lynn offered Letho, Serrit, Auckes, and other Viper witchers three hundred Orens a month, plus reimbursement for equipment and alchemical supplies.
  • Letho hesitated because he distrusted Lynn’s wealth and feared the witchers might be hired as assassins, so he postponed his answer until they left the sewers.
  • Letho told Lynn that more than fifty Nekkers guarded the last unexplored area, where the elven grandmaster blacksmith might be, and warned that a Nekker Chief could be among them.
  • Lynn shared food and water with Letho, and the two ate and meditated before heading toward the Nekker nest.
  • Near the nest, Lynn coated his silver sword with Ogroid Oil and laid out potions and bombs, impressing Letho with his resources.
  • After their potions took effect, Lynn and Letho exchanged a glance and crept toward the Nekker nest.

Ch. 165Let the Nekkers Feel Pain

Lynn and Letho used alchemical bombs, Igni, and their swords to defeat a large Nekker nest in the sewers. They killed the Nekker chieftain and the surviving monsters, leaving the nest cleared.

  • Lynn shot the Nekker sentry with his Kovir longbow, and he and Letho crept up to the nest entrance.
  • Letho threw three Superior Dragon's Dream Bombs into the nest, and Lynn ignited them with a concentrated jet of Igni while Letho shielded them both with Quen.
  • The explosion killed at least ten Nekkers and badly burned many more, but the survivors charged the witchers.
  • Lynn tossed two alchemical bombs that froze many Nekkers, then charged through the ice sculptures with Letho close behind.
  • Lynn and Letho killed the remaining Nekkers, including the tall Nekker chieftain.

Ch. 166Witchers Had Their Limits

Lynn and Letho cleared the Nekker nest, recovered mutagens, and rescued the elven grandmaster smith Tyensail. They left the sewers with Tyensail, who promised to craft them armor at his shop in Beauclair.

  • Lynn and Letho found the Nekker nest destroyed, and Lynn collected four mutagens from the corpses.
  • Lynn and Letho discovered Nekker embryos and Tyensail trapped in a wooden cage deep inside the nest.
  • Lynn freed Tyensail, and Letho helped him out of the cage while Lynn burned the embryos with Igni.
  • Lynn and Letho brought Tyensail out of the sewers, and Tyensail promised to make each witcher a set of tailored armor at his Beauclair shop.
  • Lynn asked Tyensail if they could use the shower at his shop, and Tyensail invited them to follow him.

Ch. 167I have a dream

Lynn returned to Orianna with Letho, collected his payment, and told Letho how he had saved the duchess with the Holy Grail. After Letho confronted him over suspicions that he worked for Nilfgaard, Lynn denied taking their money and revealed his dream of changing the continent and the way witchers were treated.

  • Lynn and Letho visited Orianna, who paid Lynn extra after he confirmed Tyensail had returned safely to his armor shop.
  • Letho offered to find Lynn a room, and Lynn revealed he was staying at the palace and had cured Duchess Caroberta with the Holy Grail.
  • Lynn showed Letho the Holy Grail and refused to sell it, then renewed his offer for Letho and his brothers to work for him.
  • Letho accused Lynn of possibly serving Nilfgaard and offered him a choice between pretending they had never met or fighting.
  • Lynn denied taking Nilfgaardian gold, and Letho began to believe him and asked what he was trying to accomplish.
  • Lynn declared his dream of witchers earning respect, Kaedwen becoming free and just, and people being judged by their character.

Ch. 168Those hicks in the north only look down on you, but your fellow craftsmen in Toussaint want you dead

Lynn tried to persuade Tyensail to leave Beauclair for the north by warning that an elven assassin’s attack on Duchess Caroberta would soon provoke anti-nonhuman violence in Toussaint. Tyensail reacted with fear, but the chapter ended before he answered Lynn’s warning.

  • Lynn secured Letho’s agreement to travel north, though Letho warned that he and the others would leave if Lynn failed to deliver what he promised.
  • Lynn visited Tyensail’s armor shop and asked the elven smith what he thought of the north and whether he would give up his life in Beauclair to start over there.
  • Tyensail rejected the idea, saying he was established in Beauclair and had no reason to leave.
  • Lynn told Tyensail that he had recovered the sacred chalice that healed Duchess Caroberta, and revealed that an elf had attacked her.
  • Lynn warned that human-supremacist racists would use the attack to justify violence against nonhumans, including killing Tyensail and looting his shop.

Ch. 169It was free anyway, so he might as well believe a little

Lynn persuaded Tyensail to leave Toussaint for Novigrad and promised to help him establish a smithy there. After securing the grandmaster smith’s cooperation, Lynn planned to seek out another higher vampire in Beauclair, but a commotion interrupted him on the way.

  • Lynn warned Tyensail that the attempted assassination of Duchess Caroberta could lead to violence against nonhumans throughout Toussaint.
  • Lynn described Novigrad and King Vizimir as a safer place for nonhumans, then offered to help Tyensail find a smithy, join the guild, and avoid harassment.
  • Tyensail agreed to leave Toussaint with Lynn after Lynn told him when they would depart.
  • Lynn considered the benefits of recruiting Tyensail and planned to approach another higher vampire who ran a toy shop in Beauclair.
  • A sudden commotion in an alley caught Lynn’s attention before he reached the toy shop.

Ch. 170But I Was Here First

Lynn stopped a merchant from cutting in line and had the Ducal Guard arrest him after they recognized Lynn as the witcher who had brought back the Holy Grail. The man in black thanked Lynn and led him to his toy shop, where they went up to a dim attic to talk.

  • A merchant shoved the man in black aside to take his place at the shoeshiner, and Lynn threw the merchant to the ground.
  • The merchant called for the Ducal Guard, but the guards recognized Lynn and listened as he explained that the merchant had cut in line and insulted the man in black.
  • The guards took the merchant to jail to relearn Toussaint's virtues, and Lynn let the man in black have his shoes shined first.
  • The man in black thanked Lynn and invited him to his shop, where they climbed to the attic.

Ch. 171Dettlaff wanted a quiet life

Lynn met Dettlaff van der Eretein in his gloomy toy shop and invited him and the girl doll he cared for to visit Novigrad with Regis. After learning Dettlaff’s identity, Lynn recalled how the higher vampire’s innocence would lead to terrible bloodshed more than twenty years later.

  • Lynn criticized the toy shop’s gloomy decor and suggested adding windows, changing Dettlaff’s clothes, and selling knight-themed toys.
  • Dettlaff asked Lynn how he dealt with monsters, and Lynn said he preferred talking to those capable of conversation.
  • Lynn noticed a finely made doll dressed as a wolf and learned that she dressed that way to live peacefully among animals without hurting them.
  • Lynn invited the girl doll to join him and Regis in Novigrad, and Dettlaff accepted the invitation on her behalf and gave Lynn the doll.
  • After leaving the shop, Lynn recognized Dettlaff’s name and recalled that he would later cause hundreds of deaths, despite having once secretly killed the Beast of Lyria to avenge a child.

Ch. 172I'll use your skull as a bowl

Lynn and Geralt took a contract from Earl Raymond to hunt Toussaint’s bandits, and Lynn set out with Geralt after stocking up on supplies. At the Cockatrice Inn, a bandit gang had seized the bridge-side inn, and its sentries spotted the approaching witchers.

  • Lynn refused Earl Raymond’s offer of Ducal Guard reinforcements and asked for a bounty for each bandit head.
  • Earl Raymond promised Lynn one Florin per head, and Lynn bought potions and alchemical bombs in Beauclair.
  • Lynn and Geralt left Beauclair the next day and headed north toward the Cockatrice Inn.
  • Bandits complained that taking over the inn had brought them no victims and discussed sneaking away before the knights-errant returned.
  • A bandit spotted Lynn and Geralt approaching the bridge and told the others to fetch the gang.

Ch. 173He Could Have Just Robbed Them

Lynn and Geralt fought the bandits who tried to extort them at the bridge. Lynn killed the bandit leader and the crossbowmen, while Geralt engaged the other attackers.

  • The bandit leader demanded ten Florins per person, then ordered the crossbowmen to fire before Lynn and Geralt could answer.
  • Lynn dodged the bolts and charged the bandits as Geralt engaged two of them.
  • Lynn killed one bandit, then ran along the bridge railing and killed the three crossbowmen as they tried to reload.
  • The bandit leader attacked Lynn with two swords, but Lynn parried his strikes and knocked him off balance.
  • Lynn feinted, struck the bandit leader's swords aside, and killed him with an upward slash.

Ch. 174So, what was the price?

Lynn and Geralt exterminated Toussaint’s bandit gangs, then returned to Beauclair to claim their bounty and meet the awakened Duchess Caroberta. Fringilla gave Lynn a rare Glamarye that changed his appearance and continued working even near dimeritium, leaving him to join the duchess with the gift.

  • Lynn and Geralt killed the bandits at the Cockatrice Inn, collected their heads, and burned the inn staff’s bodies.
  • Lynn and Geralt swept through Toussaint’s bandit gangs using ambushes, alchemical bombs, and poison, killing more than three hundred bandits over a month.
  • Lynn and Geralt returned to Beauclair with a wagon of bandit heads and learned that Duchess Caroberta had awakened and wanted to see them.
  • Fringilla stopped Lynn, gave him a shield-shaped Glamarye, and showed him that it changed his face and resisted dimeritium.
  • Fringilla insisted that Lynn keep the Glamarye, then sent him back to meet Duchess Caroberta.

Ch. 175Money isn't everything, but without it, nothing is possible

Lynn explained to Duchess Caroberta that granting a territory to two witchers could provoke public outrage and draw political trouble to Toussaint. He hinted that he had a plan, but the chapter ended before he revealed it.

  • Duchess Caroberta offered Lynn and Geralt Castel Ravello Vineyard as a reward for saving her and restoring safety to the duchy.
  • Lynn realized Fringilla had given him the amulet of deception because she anticipated the offer of a territory.
  • Lynn warned Duchess Caroberta that people might resent witchers as lords and that the controversy could implicate her.
  • Duchess Caroberta recognized the political risks and asked Lynn whether he had a solution or would prefer a sack of gold.
  • Geralt signaled Lynn to avoid political entanglements, but Lynn reassured him and began to propose his idea.

Ch. 176"Plate armor is useless" was actually spread by the English, who had a blood feud with the French

Lynn persuaded Duchess Caroberta to make Castel Ravello Vineyard the prize for the knights' tournament, planning to win it under a false identity. He prepared for the competition and learned its events, while Geralt refused to take part in Lynn's political plan.

  • Duchess Caroberta agreed to offer Castel Ravello Vineyard as the tournament's champion's prize, and Lynn said he would accept defeat as the Lady of the Lake's will.
  • After leaving court, Geralt objected to Lynn's plan but chose not to get involved, and the two parted ways in Beauclair.
  • Lynn disguised himself with Glamarye and bought pitch-black plate armor from Tyensail's shop.
  • Lynn returned to court and asked Maksymilian about the tournament, learning that it featured archery, jousting, and a team competition whose winner would become champion.
