| Magic Pool expansion — 75 to over 150 | 10 | Absorbs magic from Winterfell’s Heart Tree. The uncontrolled influx leaves him physically overwhelmed, forcing him to strike his head against the tree to break contact. |
| Witcher mutation completed | 11 | Drinks the Decoction of the Grasses to consume the excess magic. Maximizes the success rate and negates every listed side effect, surviving the painful transformation and successfully casting Quen afterward. |
| Witcher System — Level 2 | 12 | Post-mutation inspection shows 120 magic points; unlocks Level 1 Quen, Yrden, Aard, Igni, and Axii, plus the basic Swallow, Cat, Thunderbolt, and Blizzard formulas. Gains greatly enhanced physical abilities and rapid healing. |
| Blood of the Dragonlord absorbed | 44 | Draws power from the Three-Eyed Crow’s blood after the Crow removes his own god’s power from it. The absorption causes intense burning pain. |
| Blood of the Dragonlord — partial integration | 45 | Discovers that repeated contact between his witcher-infused blood and the separate Dragonlord blood can gradually merge them. Achieves a minute degree of fusion; full integration remains unfinished and potentially lethal if rushed. |
Background / History
Transmigration and succession
Clay’s body is inhabited by a soul from another world who had been complaining about a Witcher game update immediately before transmigrating. After absorbing Clay’s memories, the newcomer recognizes Westeros and realizes that this third-generation Manderly did not exist in the original history he remembers 1.
Clay returns to White Harbor after a two-year journey through the Free Cities, having been recalled by Ser Marlon Manderly. Although his father is Wyman’s second son, his uncle’s wife has suffered a miscarriage and been judged unable to bear further children. Wyman welcomes Clay as the family’s third-generation heir and sends him to Winterfell with a sealed letter to secure recognition of his position 1 2.
Winterfell and the Trial of the Grasses
Accompanied by Wylla, Clay visits Winterfell, befriends Robb and Jon, and presents himself to Eddard Stark. Eddard initially requests confirmation by raven; Rodrik separately accepts Clay’s identity after he mentions Wendel’s private gambling debt and delivers the promised bottle of wine 2 5 6.
Clay’s other objective is magical power. He already possesses most ingredients for the Decoction of the Grasses, including a dragonbone bow purchased in Pentos, but still needs sentinel bark and a larger magic reserve. Once his guards bring the bark, he synthesizes three bottles of the decoction 2 8.
During Robert’s visit, Clay leaves the banquet and secretly draws magic from the Heart Tree. The resulting overload forces him to undergo mutation in the Godswood that night. After surviving, he conceals the incident by pretending to have passed out drunk in the mud; his subsequent system inspection confirms the Level 2 upgrade 10 11 12.
Imprisonment and Littlefinger’s plot
Clay confronts a Lannister knight who insults House Manderly and later kills a Lannister. Under pressure from Cersei, Robert orders him imprisoned until the royal party leaves, explicitly requiring that he remain alive. Eddard arranges protective guards and checks on his food 13 15.
An assassin, Hall Lyko, enters Clay’s cell claiming to act for the Lannisters. Clay subdues him with Axii and learns that Petyr Baelish is responsible. Recognizing an attempt to provoke Stark–Lannister conflict, Clay orders Hall to report his assassination as successful and stop investigating him 15 16.
Clay denies seeing an intruder, but Eddard recognizes that he has concealed the truth. Their private conversation challenges Clay’s assumptions about Eddard’s political judgment; Eddard also warns him about the weight of killing and asks him to help Robb 17.
Bargaining with the Three-Eyed Crow
While imprisoned, Clay notices magical threads surrounding Bran but not Robb or Jon. Before leaving Winterfell, he severs Bran’s connection to the Heart Tree. The Three-Eyed Crow pulls him into a historical memory of the throne room and demands that he stop interfering 18 20 21.
Clay identifies the figure as Brynden Rivers. The Crow interprets his Witcher System magic as evidence of a foreign god, a misunderstanding Clay deliberately leaves intact. Clay doubts an offer to place him on the Iron Throne in exchange for Northern independence, then requests a dragon egg and a hatching method as the price of noninterference with Bran. He refuses to accept the proposed bargain without further assurances 21 22 23.
The Crow later fulfills his promise at White Harbor, using Hodor to deliver the egg. Clay recognizes that the gift is also intended to make him a counterweight to R’hllor’s influence in the south 43.
Building power in White Harbor
Back home, Clay begins preparing for the wars he expects. He reveals his Signs to Wyman but conceals their true origin behind a story about a lost Valyrian tome. His demonstration wins support for secretly creating more witchers, with Wyman pledging 50,000 gold dragons initially and further funding as needed 25 28 29 30.
Of forty-two cadet-branch candidates introduced to him, twenty remain after selection. Clay assigns them to the White Harbor Guard and requires each to learn to write a letter within a month. He prioritizes learning ability and independent judgment because he intends his witchers to operate in small groups behind enemy lines, rather than merely obey orders in formation 27 30 36.
Wyman also appoints him successor to Ser Bartimus as commander of the White Sea Guard. Clay assumes control of its intelligence network, redirects surveillance toward Winterfell and the Twins, and orders investigations into Petyr, Varys, and Hall Lyko 38 40 41.
Dragonlord blood and the journey to the Twins
After receiving the dragon egg, Clay absorbs the Blood of the Dragonlord supplied by the Three-Eyed Crow. He discovers that gradual fusion with his own blood is possible, but the pain makes rapid integration dangerous. He leaves the egg unhatched while weighing its strategic value against the risks to House Manderly 44 45.
Clay subsequently sails south aboard the Old Man of White Harbor with 200 elite Manderly knights, responding to an invitation that Wyman identifies as a potential Frey marriage overture. Before departing, he promises Wynafryd that he will reject any Frey proposal concerning her. On reaching the Twins, he studies the fortress with the question of how he might capture it as an army commander 34 46 50.
Appearance
- Build: Tall and powerfully built, with a physique Rodrik considers recognizably Manderly 5 11.
- Family resemblance: Rodrik says his looks come from his mother rather than Wendel 5.
- Clothing and heraldry: Wears fine clothing embroidered with the merman sigil; departs for the Twins in armor with a golden trident painted on the breastplate 11 46.
- Mutation effects: Negates all listed side effects of his decoction, including split pupils; catlike pupils are therefore not a documented feature 8 11.
Personality
Clay is pragmatic about survival and skeptical of noble status as protection. His knowledge of the Stark children’s original fates drives his pursuit of personal strength, while his experience with Littlefinger exposes how vulnerable he remains to political manipulation. He also revises his assumptions when Westerosi houses prove more formidable—or Eddard more perceptive—than he expected 2 3 16 17.
He dislikes elaborate aristocratic formalities but understands the importance of hierarchy. With prospective guards, he initially emphasizes authority and dismisses family connections as irrelevant; once their subordinate role is established, he listens to their circumstances, encourages opinions, and rewards independent thought rather than unquestioning obedience 9 26 27 37.
His ambition extends beyond securing White Harbor. He privately recognizes that the royal titles attached to Daenerys and Margaery attract him more than any beauty he has never personally seen. Nevertheless, he refuses to abandon his family for the prospect of a dragon and wants to prevent the Manderlys from suffering the Starks’ tragedies 34 38 45.
Clay can be confrontational when his house is insulted and habitually acts alone, frustrating his guards. At the same time, he orders that the White Sea Guard’s death benefits never be reduced and permits intelligence agents to retreat rather than waste their networks in unwinnable contests 13 41 45.
Abilities & Skills
Witcher Physiology and Senses
His successful mutation grants physical capabilities far beyond those of ordinary people 12.
- Strength and mobility: Springs out of the muddy depression using his legs alone immediately after the transformation 11.
- Rapid healing: Wounds heal extremely quickly 12.
- Disease resistance: Immune to the vast majority of diseases 47.
- Enhanced perception: Discerns distant engraved details, follows tracks, and detects magical resonance through his witcher senses 24 42.
- Limits: Still experiences discomfort at sea and struggles to cross a swaying gangplank; mutation does not eliminate every physical difficulty 46 47.
Witcher Signs
All five unlocked Signs are Level 1 in his documented Level 2 system display 12 31.
- Quen — protective shield: Forms a pale-yellow shield. It deflects a falling longsword and can stop arrows fired from a distance, but cannot be relied on against siege-ballista bolts 11 25 29.
- Yrden — slowing effect: Makes Wyman’s legs feel leaden and movement difficult when cast beneath his feet 29.
- Aard — forceful impact: Shatters a wooden weapon rack and scatters its contents 29.
- Igni — fire magic: Demonstrated to Wyman as proof that Clay possesses magic 28.
- Axii — confusion and influence: Subdues Hall Lyko for interrogation and instructions; also renders a frightened horse docile. Clay considers trained or strong-willed targets a potential limitation 15 16 25 29.
- Resource limit: His demonstration exhausts the magic stored in his Signs, requiring rest. He judges their current strength suitable for small conflicts, not decisive battlefield dominance 25 29.
Alchemy and Witcher Creation
The system provides recipes adapted to ingredients available in Westeros 2.
- Decoction of the Grasses: Synthesizes the potion needed to mutate ordinary humans. Its listed base success rate is 30%, with severe potential side effects 8.
- Magical stabilization: A Magic Pool of 100 provides a success rate above 80%; larger reserves improve protection against adverse effects. Clay must personally stabilize future subjects during mutation 2 30.
- Additional formulas: Unlocks Swallow, Cat, Thunderbolt, and Blizzard. The documented effects include total-darkness vision for Cat and improved combat reactions and agility for Blizzard 12 31.
- Toxicity limit: Drinking all four together would likely incapacitate him despite his witcher resistance. The formulas are unlocked, but the supplied chapters do not establish that he has brewed or used them 31.
- Training constraint: Future witchers must learn Signs, swordsmanship, and potion knowledge; Clay cannot directly grant them the system’s knowledge 30.
Magical Absorption and Blood Integration
Clay can use the Magic Pool to draw power from external sources 10 44.
- Absorbs substantial magic from Winterfell’s Heart Tree and severs the magical connection surrounding Bran 10 21.
- Finds White Harbor’s withered heart tree too depleted to increase his reserve 42.
- Absorbs Dragonlord blood and begins integrating it into his own magically altered blood 44 45.
- Faces serious risks from uncontrolled intake or rushed fusion; neither complete blood integration nor dragon hatching is documented 11 45.
Swordsmanship and Command
- School of the Wolf: Practices system-provided sword forms with a hand-and-a-half sword. Rodrik recognizes their close-combat potential, and Clay gains the advantage over a tiring Jon before Robb ends their bout 4 5 6.
- Small-unit planning: Designs his prospective witcher force around mobility, initiative, infiltration, and disproportionate impact rather than massed positional warfare 25 30 36.
- Intelligence management: Commands the White Sea Guard’s regional networks, sets surveillance priorities, and adjusts plans when experienced agents identify practical obstacles 40 41.
- Foreknowledge: Retains knowledge of the original story, but altered events, incomplete recollection, and hidden political capabilities repeatedly limit its reliability 3 17 22 24.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Steel sword: Trains with a hand-and-a-half sword and considers White Harbor’s standard steel weapons sufficient for his immediate needs. A Valyrian steel blade remains an aspiration, not a documented possession 4 31.
- Dragonbone bow: Purchased from a Pentoshi collector using all the gold he had brought from White Harbor; its dragonbone serves as a reusable decoction ingredient 2 8.
- Witcher System inventory: Stores ingredients, synthesized decoctions, and the dragon egg 8 45.
- White Sea Guard command ring: Gold ring bearing a trident, a blood-red gemstone, and the worn words “Our Reach Is Long!” Its presentation establishes his authority over the network’s officers 40.
- Dragon egg: Petrified egg delivered through the Three-Eyed Crow’s arrangement; kept secretly in his inventory and not yet hatched 43 45.
- Heraldic armor: Worn for his departure south, with a golden trident painted on the breastplate 46.
Relationships
- Wyman Manderly — Grandfather, head of the family, and principal patron. Secures Clay’s succession, funds the witcher project, and teaches him to use the house’s resources rather than act alone 1 30 34.
- Wendel Manderly — Father. His friendship with Rodrik and private gambling debt help Clay establish his identity at Winterfell 2 5.
- Wylis Manderly — Uncle. His lack of a male heir and poor health contribute to Clay’s importance in the succession and need to learn White Harbor’s administration 1 25.
- Wynafryd Manderly — Elder cousin, frequently addressed as his sister. Clay promises to refuse a Frey match on her behalf; protecting her is part of his growing commitment to the family 1 38 46.
- Wylla Manderly — Younger cousin and Winterfell traveling companion. Clay treats her affectionately while forbidding contact with the royal family 1 2 9.
- Ser Marlon Manderly — Senior relative who recalls him from Essos, introduces guard candidates, and supervises his security and practical education 1 26 36.
- Eddard Stark — Liege lord and protector during his imprisonment. Recognizes Clay’s concealed handling of the assassination attempt and asks him to support Robb 15 17.
- Robb Stark and Jon — Friends made at Winterfell through training, conversation, and shared wine. Clay warns Robb against openly displaying hostility to the Lannisters 5 9 18 20.
- Bran Stark — Subject of Clay’s magical investigation. Severing the threads around Bran brings Clay into direct conflict with the Three-Eyed Crow 18 21.
- Brynden Rivers / Three-Eyed Crow — Wary negotiating partner who mistakes Clay’s system for divine patronage. Supplies the dragon egg and blood while seeking noninterference with Bran and opposition to R’hllor’s expansion 21 22 43 44.
- Ser Bartimus — Predecessor and mentor in command of the White Sea Guard. Warns Clay against leniency and blindly trusting intelligence reports 38 42.
- Petyr Baelish — Political enemy behind the attempt to kill Clay and frame the Lannisters. Clay counters by sending the controlled assassin back with a false success report 15 16 28.
- Maester Theomore — Household maester whom Wyman identifies as a Lannister and advises Clay to keep at a distance 32.
