Background / History
Life in White Harbor
Wylla grew up under House Manderly’s strict expectations for noble daughters. She complained that her grandfather expected girls to remain in the castle until marriage, and she wanted an opportunity to see more of the world 2.
When Clay returned after two years in the Free Cities, Wylla and Wynafryd led the family’s welcome at White Harbor. Wylla excitedly remarked on how much taller he had become and later laughed at Wyman’s enthusiastic discussion of Clay’s marriage prospects. Both sisters fell silent when their grandfather threatened to marry them off instead 1.
Visit to Winterfell
Wylla privately asked Clay to take her to Winterfell, then prompted him to raise the request at dinner by stamping on his foot. Despite Wylis’s opposition, Wyman agreed, making Clay responsible for watching her. Wylla argued that she could befriend Sansa Stark, whom Wynafryd already knew 2 3.
She traveled north with Clay and ten Manderly guards, riding a snow-white horse. Her frequent wandering extended the journey from an expected fifteen days to twenty 3.
Within three days of arriving, Wylla had become close friends with both Sansa and Arya Stark. Their whispered conversations drew complaints from their governess. Nearly two months into the visit, Wylla still named only the two girls when Clay asked whom she had spent time with. Clay interpreted Wyman’s permission for the trip as an attempt to encourage a match with Robb Stark—an intention Wylla apparently had not recognized 6 9.
During King Robert’s arrival, Wylla eagerly watched the royal knights. She had agreed to Clay’s instruction not to approach members of the royal family 9.
Lannister Incident and Return
While wandering around the town, Wylla became separated from her guards and was harassed by a minor Lannister noble. After the guards identified her, the man threw copper coins onto the ground rather than apologize. Wylla burst into tears when Clay arrived. Clay suspected a deliberate arrangement because of the unusually close protection she normally received, but the circumstances were not established at the scene 14.
Clay killed the noble after further insults and demands that Wylla be handed over. Robert ordered Clay imprisoned, while Eddard arranged for Wylla to stay safely in the main keep, sharing Sansa’s room at night 14 15 18.
Wylla informed Wyman by raven, prompting him to come to Winterfell with troops to retrieve his grandchildren. Before their departure, he ordered Hoster to bring her directly from the main keep to his own guards 19 20.
The incident damaged Wylla’s reputation. Clay believed marriage would be out of the question for another year or two, which suited her existing reluctance to marry. Although she was not blamed for the harassment, Wyman confined her to an ornate carriage for the return journey 20 24.
By a later family dinner, Wylla had recovered from her dejection and resumed chattering to Clay and Wynafryd, recounting sailors’ stories 37.
Appearance
Wylla is distinguished by her dyed hair, pale eyes, and visible pointed canine teeth 2.
- Hair: Dyed pale green; worn in a braid during the discussion about visiting Winterfell 2 3.
- Eyes: Pale purple 2.
- Teeth: Two pointed canines show when she giggles 2.
- Clothing: Wears a dark green gown when welcoming Clay home 1.
Personality
Wylla is exuberant, mischievous, and impatient with restrictions. Once outside the castle, she whoops and laughs from horseback, dismissing Clay’s safety reminders as fussing “like a septa.” Her forceful, unruly manner contrasts with Wynafryd’s gentleness; Wyman criticizes her neglect of ladylike accomplishments and her clumsiness at meals 3 24.
She is comfortable teasing Clay, including making bawdy guesses about his disappearance after he returns covered in mud. Her confidence does not eliminate her vulnerabilities: she is uneasy in Winterfell’s darkness and seeks comfort in Clay’s arms after the harassment. Clay considers her somewhat naive, but not stupid 4 12 14.
Relationships
- Clay Manderly — Older cousin and traveling companion. He supports her request to visit Winterfell, protects her after the Lannister incident, and later resolves to help keep both her and Wynafryd out of harmful marriages. Although frequently called his “younger sister,” their fathers are brothers 1 2 3 38.
- Wynafryd Manderly — Elder sister and confidante. Wylla initially hopes to follow her example by befriending Sansa; the sisters often whisper together at family gatherings 1 3 24.
- Wylis Manderly — Father. He initially refuses her request to accompany Clay, before Wyman overrules him 3.
- Wyman Manderly — Grandfather and head of the household. His restrictions frustrate Wylla, but her raven brings him to Winterfell to retrieve her and Clay 2 19.
- Sansa Stark — Close friend and roommate during the aftermath of Clay’s imprisonment 6 18.
- Arya Stark — Close friend and one of Wylla’s principal companions throughout her Winterfell stay 6 9.
