Geography and Locations
- Climate: The North remains bitterly cold even in summer. During his stay at Winterfell, Robert complains that it feels colder than King's Landing in winter 19.
- Landscape: Clay's summer journey passes through broad blue-green plains beside the White Knife River; the Wolfswood provides sentinel bark for his witcher preparations 3 6 7.
- Southern approach: The Neck is a natural defensive barrier on land. Eddard leaves Northern territory through this region while traveling south with the king 33 47.
- Coastal exposure: Ships can bypass the Neck entirely, making the North's coastline a separate defensive problem 47.
| Location | Significance |
|---|---|
| Winterfell | Northern capital and House Stark's military stronghold, enclosed by two immense walls. Its godswood contains the largest weirwood in the North 4 6. |
| White Harbor | The North's largest city and the fifth-largest in Westeros. Its wealth supports House Manderly's unusually well-equipped troops and fleet 3 46. |
| White Knife River | Route followed between White Harbor and Winterfell; its mouth opens into the Bite 3 23 48. |
| Wolfswood | Vast forest containing sentinel trees, whose bark Clay uses in the Decoction of the Grasses 6 7. |
| Cerwyn Castle | Landmark on Clay's planned route to Winterfell before joining the Kingsroad 3. |
| Dreadfort | Bolton seat and a principal target of House Manderly's Northern intelligence network 28 40. |
| Last Hearth and Hornwood | Other major concentrations of White Sea Guard agents within the North 40. |
| Wolf's Den | Ancient fortress in White Harbor, later used as a prison and the White Sea Guard's headquarters 39. |
Government and Noble Houses
Stark Rule
- Liege authority: Eddard oversees Northern vassals as Warden of the North. Wyman seeks his confirmation of Clay's identity so that the Northern nobility will recognize the Manderly heir 5 6.
- Delegated government: After Eddard accompanies Robert south, a formal letter announces that Robb will serve as Lord of Winterfell and exercise the Warden's authority 33.
- Feudal obligations: Clay considers himself bound to the Stark cause by his position as House Manderly's heir; he expects that a Northern march to war would also require his participation 3 7 20.
- Honor and hierarchy: Escaping from his own liege's prison would sever Clay's standing within the Northern noble order, even though an escape from enemy captivity could be celebrated 17.
Notable Houses
| House | Position and Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Stark | Ruling house based at Winterfell. Clay respects its leadership and honor but initially questions Eddard and Robb's political judgment 3. |
| Manderly | Powerful vassal house ruling White Harbor. Its trade connections make it a Northern gateway to the outside world 5 8. |
| Bolton | House based at the Dreadfort with its own spy force. Wyman initially suspects Roose Bolton when he learns that someone attempted to assassinate Clay 28 33. |
| Greystark | Historical Stark cadet branch that held the Wolf's Den for five centuries before siding with the Dreadfort's Red King against the Stark Wolf King 39. |
Economy and Military
Wealth and Trade
- Uneven resources: Most Northern soldiers wear mail because the region's poorer finances cannot support widespread full plate. House Manderly is a wealthy exception 3.
- White Harbor's importance: More than half of House Manderly's strength is sustained by wealth flowing through the city, making its protection essential during war 47.
- External connections: Wyman maintains correspondence with great houses in the Riverlands and Vale, unlike the more insular Northern nobility 8.
- Safer shipping: Wyman credits Stannis and the Manderly fleet with killing pirates and improving Narrow Sea trade routes 24.
Land Forces and Intelligence
| Resource | Documented Strength or Function |
|---|---|
| Manderly cavalry equipment | According to Clay, the family armory can equip more than 1,500 fully armored cavalry at short notice 3. |
| Wyman's Winterfell escort | 100 heavy cavalry and 100 auxiliary soldiers accompany him to retrieve his grandchildren 19. |
| White Sea Guard | Manderly intelligence organization headquartered in the Wolf's Den, compiling reports from 34 locations across several regions 39. |
| Northern surveillance | Agents concentrate on Winterfell, the Dreadfort, Last Hearth, and Hornwood; others cover castles and dependent villages 40. |
Naval Defense
- Historical decline: Brandon the Burner destroyed Brandon the Shipwright's remaining warships. The North subsequently went more than a century without an organized naval force, with House Manderly an exception 46.
- Manderly fleet: White Harbor supports 24 warships, chiefly large sailing ships and swift longships, though its fleet is far weaker than the Royal Fleet or Iron Fleet 46.
- Strategic weakness: Clay identifies naval access as a way around the Neck's defenses. His concern draws on his knowledge of Theon's attack through the western coastline in the original course of events, not an attack already occurring in this timeline 47.
Culture and Religion
- Honor: Family reputation and loyalty to one's liege carry serious political consequences. Clay's killing of a Lannister in defense of family honor wins admiration among Northern soldiers 17 18.
- Law and oaths: Eddard personally executes a Night's Watch deserter and brings the younger generation to witness the judgment as a lesson in law and honor 6.
- Old Gods: Their worship has been rooted in the lands north of the Neck for thousands of years. Northerners call weirwoods “heart trees” 7.
- Religious coexistence: House Manderly migrated from the Reach and retained the Faith of the Seven, but does not impose that faith on its subjects. Both religions coexist in White Harbor 42.
- Distrust of the Lannisters: Veterans remember Lannister atrocities during the sack of King's Landing. This hostility also contributes to the Manderlys' distrust of Maester Theomore's Lannister origins 18 20 32.
- Reluctance toward southern politics: Many nobles oppose Eddard's departure for King's Landing, remembering the deaths of his father and elder brother under Aerys II 24 33.
Weirwoods and Magic
Sources of Magic
- White Harbor's young heart tree gives Clay a small increase in his magic reserves when touched 7.
- Winterfell's heart tree releases a much greater surge, raising his Magic Pool from 75 to above 150. Clay must forcibly break contact to escape the flow 10.
- Wolfswood sentinel bark, together with weirwood-derived magic, helps make the North the setting for Clay's first successful witcher mutation 7 10 11.
The Three-Eyed Crow
- Influence at Winterfell: Clay discovers magical threads surrounding Bran and traces the interference to Brynden Rivers, the Three-Eyed Crow 18 21.
- Proposed independence: The Crow offers to help Clay gain the Iron Throne on condition that he later grant the North independence. This is a proposal, not an achieved political change 22.
- Weirwood agreement: Clay gains access to magic from Northern weirwoods while allowing Bran to remain under the Crow's influence. The Crow warns him against drawing too much and says that touching a weirwood can establish contact 23.
History
Northern Kings and the Wolf's Den
During the rule of the Kings in the North, Jon Stark built the Wolf's Den at the White Knife's mouth to defend against pirates. Stark relatives initially occupied it, and their descendants formed cadet branches. The Greystarks later held the fortress for five centuries before rebelling alongside the Dreadfort against House Stark 39.
War of the Usurper
Northern forces followed Eddard south during the war. Wyman and Wendel Manderly entered King's Landing after the Lannisters had taken it and witnessed looting and violence. Attempts by White Harbor soldiers to intervene were rebuffed, leaving lasting resentment among Northern veterans 18 20.
Events of 298 AC
Clay's return makes Winterfell and White Harbor the centers of his preparations for the coming conflict. At Winterfell, he secures recognition as the Manderly heir, befriends the Stark children, and becomes a witcher using the heart tree's magic 6 11 20.
Robert's visit brings Northern and royal tensions into direct contact. Clay's killing of a Lannister leads to imprisonment, an assassination attempt, and Wyman's armed arrival to retrieve him 15 19.
After Eddard leaves to become Hand, Robb assumes authority in the North. Clay takes command of the White Sea Guard and orders its Northern agents to concentrate on Winterfell, particularly Bran and Catelyn Stark 33 39 41.
