Background / History
Madara was one of the figures who ended the Warring States Period alongside Hashirama Senju and was remembered across the shinobi world as the “Shinobi World Asura,” a title earned through bloodshed rather than benevolence. He considered Hashirama his only true equal and regarded their era as greater than the present generation's conflicts 151 153.
In his old age, Madara awakened the Rinnegan and devised a plan to return in his prime. He transplanted his eyes into the young Nagato, intending to reclaim them after his resurrection 155. Black Zetsu and White Zetsu later revive him through Impure World Reincarnation when Nagato's Wood Clone can no longer sustain the war against the Human Puppet Corps 151.
After regaining a living body and the Rinnegan, Madara assumes control over Akatsuki. He places Cursed Seals on the members' brains and hearts and secretly implants spores to monitor them, ensuring their obedience before revealing the Ten-Tails, the Rinnegan, and his Infinite Tsukuyomi plan 154 155.
Personality
Madara is proud, contemptuous of weakness, and intensely self-assured. He dismisses most modern shinobi as inferior to himself and Hashirama, yet acknowledges exceptional strength, intelligence, and potential when he sees it 151 167.
His concept of peace initially centers on Infinite Tsukuyomi: a worldwide illusion where every person can live out their desired life without war, disease, aging, betrayal, or loss. He openly accepts that this is an escape from reality, but views it as a justified sacrifice for the happiness of the majority 155.
Learning that Infinite Tsukuyomi creates White Zetsu destabilizes his convictions. Rather than abandoning his ambition, he redirects it toward preventing the technique from ever being cast again and eliminating threats such as Black Zetsu, Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, Toneri Ōtsutsuki, and Isshiki Ōtsutsuki 162 173 187.
Madara holds a notably protective view of younger brothers. He despises Itachi's treatment of Sasuke, spares Itachi so Sasuke may inherit his eyes, and sees Sasuke's resemblance to Izuna as reason to take an interest in him 155.
Appearance
Upon his first revival, Madara wears a black tight-fitting combat suit beneath red layered armor. He has long black hair and the cracks characteristic of an Impure World Reincarnation body 151.
- Long black hair and red layered armor in his standard battle attire 151
- Purple Rinnegan after reclaiming his eyes 152 154
- In Six Paths Ten-Tails form, white skin, white hair, white robes, a Sage's Staff, and seven Truth-Seeking Balls 193
Abilities & Skills
Rinnegan
Madara's Rinnegan is described as an ultimate ocular technique, above red-ranked traits. It grants him access to Six Paths techniques, powerful genjutsu, chakra absorption, gravity manipulation, and the ability to summon and control the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path 153 155.
- Uses Rinnegan genjutsu to show others historical scenes and the proposed Infinite Tsukuyomi world 155 173
- Uses the Human Path's Mind Layer Dive to extract and inspect Itachi's soul and memories 155
- Uses the Preta Path to absorb chakra-based attacks and recover chakra 163
- Can summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path 152 179
- Its full potential requires both eyes; a single eye is substantially less effective 152
Susanoo
Madara can manifest a Perfect Susanoo even while inhabiting the Second Tsuchikage's body. Its katana can breach the Artificial Sun's Light Barrier, though chakra-absorption techniques can dissolve its constructs into chakra 162 163.
- Perfect Susanoo grants flight and immense cutting power 162
- Can form skeletal Susanoo defenses even while eyeless 152
- Its chakra-based weapons are vulnerable to Izayoi's absorption abilities 163
Wood Release
Madara possesses Hashirama Senju's cells and can create Wood Clones with enormous chakra reserves. He uses these clones for surveillance, negotiation, reconnaissance, and combat 152 167 190.
- Creates Wood Clones to investigate enemies and search for ruins 167 171
- A Wood Clone can use the Rinnegan and summon reanimated shinobi 161
- His Wood Release is greatly enhanced in Sage of Six Paths Mode 176
- His Yin Release exceeds his Yang Release; he cannot create a true will incarnation through Yin-Yang Release alone 173
Limbo: Border Jail
Limbo creates invisible shadow clones that operate on another plane. Madara considers it the Rinnegan's exclusive technique and a major advantage after regaining his living body and eyes 151.
- Shadows can block Truth-Seeking Ball attacks 175
- Can strike targets without being seen by ordinary shinobi 155
- Detectable by opponents with Six Paths-level Sage Mode and ultimate ocular techniques, including Izayoi 159 175
- Sasuke's black-hole eye technique cannot harm the Limbo Shadows 185
Sage of Six Paths Mode
Madara receives Sage of Six Paths Power through his Rinnegan after fusing Sage Chakra with Priestess Power 176.
- Perceives life fluctuations across the entire shinobi world, including ordinary people and animals 176
- Gains power sufficient to shatter his prior Perfect Susanoo or Hashirama's Wood Golem with a single punch 176
- Can replicate Hashirama's Sage Art Wood Release: True Several Thousand Hands 176
- Allows him to see the past, including the Ten-Tails' and Ōtsutsuki Clan's history 177
Ten-Tails Jinchuriki Form
Madara seals the Ten-Tails inside himself after gathering the Tailed Beasts. Unlike his original plan, he saves the Jinchuriki and sends them to the Kamui Dimension before extracting the beasts 193.
- Gains immense chakra, enhanced Eye Power, Truth-Seeking Balls, and a Sage's Staff 193
- Can wield Kekkei Mōra-class techniques 196
- Uses the Sword of Desires, a Yin-Yang Release weapon able to slice through Truth-Seeking Balls and erase mountains in its path 194
- Black Zetsu can seize control after attaching to his body, despite Madara's Ten-Tails Jinchuriki state 194 198
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Gunbai — Madara's war fan, temporarily carried and returned by Obito 152
- Sage's Staff — wielded in his Six Paths Ten-Tails form 193
- Sword of Desires — a weapon of pure will that can cut through Truth-Seeking Balls and reshape the landscape 194
Relationships
- Hashirama Senju — lifelong rival and the only shinobi Madara consistently treats as his equal; Madara carries Hashirama's cells and compares all eras to their own 151 176.
- Uchiha Obito — former pawn and recipient of Madara's teachings; Madara repeatedly criticizes Obito's weakness, later resurrecting him through Impure World Reincarnation 152 185 187.
- Nagato — recipient of Madara's transplanted Rinnegan and later ally; Nagato agrees to assist Madara after hearing the truth of the ancient era 155 167.
- Black Zetsu — initially treated as a subordinate and tool, but later suspected of manipulating him; Black Zetsu ultimately reveals Madara was its pawn 167 194.
- Itachi Uchiha — descendant whom Madara defeats effortlessly, reads through with the Human Path, and spares for Sasuke's sake 155.
- Sasuke Uchiha — descendant who reminds Madara of Izuna; Madara hopes Sasuke can be drawn to his side after learning the truth of the Uchiha massacre 155.
- Izayoi — rival whose Tenseigan-based power repeatedly challenges Madara; Madara alternates between recruiting him, investigating him, and fighting him across the Moon and space 163 174 178.
- Ōtsutsuki Toneri — believed by Madara to be the source of revelations about Black Zetsu and the ancient past; one of Madara's principal perceived threats 194.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Endgame Battle and Resurrection
Black Zetsu uses Nagato's possessed body to perform Impure World Reincarnation, bringing Madara back as the battle between the Human Puppet Corps and the Impure World Reincarnation Corps turns against Nagato 151. Madara is subsequently restored to life through the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and regains his Rinnegan 152.
Akatsuki Takeover
Madara summons the remaining Akatsuki members, binds them with Cursed Seals and White Zetsu spores, then explains the origins of chakra, the Ten-Tails, and his plan to cast Infinite Tsukuyomi 154 155. He defeats Itachi with overwhelming ease, strips his memories, and spares him only so Sasuke can inherit his eyes 155.
Moon Investigation and Revelation
Seeking the Space-Time Passage to the Moon, Madara sends the invisible Second Tsuchikage to scout ahead before personally investigating the lunar ruins 161 162. Izayoi, disguised as Toneri, exposes the possibility that Black Zetsu is Kaguya's third child and that Infinite Tsukuyomi is a White Zetsu-creation technique, leaving Madara unable to determine what is true 162.
Break with Infinite Tsukuyomi
Madara investigates the Sage of Six Paths' legacy and concludes that Black Zetsu manipulated him toward Kaguya's resurrection. He tells Obito that Infinite Tsukuyomi is fraudulent, shattering Obito's dream, and resolves to prevent its use instead 173.
Six Paths Rivalry
Madara receives complete Six Paths Power and confronts Izayoi on the Moon 176. Their battle continues for two days and two nights from the Moon into space, with Madara using Limbo, Storm Release Light Fang, and Planetary Devastation against Izayoi's Truth-Seeking Balls, Chakra Orbs, and Golden Wheel Reincarnation Explosion 178. Izayoi eventually overwhelms him with a rainbow light attack and sends him crashing onto a distant planet, though Madara survives by summoning the Demonic Statue 179.
Final Battlefield
Madara and Nagato begin capturing Tailed Beasts while Madara stalls Izayoi and Toneri 190. After eight beasts are captured, Madara reconstructs the Ten-Tails, saves the Jinchuriki, and seals the beast within himself to become the second Ten-Tails Jinchuriki after the Sage of Six Paths 193.
Black Zetsu's Betrayal
While Madara battles Izayoi, Black Zetsu confirms that Madara knows its true identity. It escapes Madara's surveillance Wood Clone and moves to exploit Madara's Ten-Tails Jinchuriki form, declaring that Madara was only ever its pawn 194. Madara later realizes that Black Zetsu's hidden threat was a reason Izayoi had avoided claiming the Demonic Statue himself 198.
Trivia
- Madara's concern for Sasuke is tied to Sasuke's resemblance to Madara's younger brother, Izuna 155.
- He describes himself and Black Zetsu as tools created by an original body, using this claim to conceal his growing suspicion of Black Zetsu 167.
- Madara's early plan for peace is repeatedly called “running away” by its opponents; Madara does not deny the accusation 155.
