Background / History

Nagato was selected to bear a transplanted Rinnegan because of his unusually compatible Uzumaki and Senju ancestry. His chakra and vitality surpassed those of ordinary members of either clan, allowing him to survive the Rinnegan, summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, and potentially perform Rinne Rebirth. 111 120

He was trained by Jiraiya alongside Yahiko and Konan. After Yahiko’s death, Nagato preserved his friend’s role by operating Yahiko’s corpse as Deva Path Pain. Although the world identifies him as Akatsuki’s leader, Nagato insists that Pain—Yahiko—is the organization’s true leader and founder. 103 124

Before his recovery, the Demonic Statue had left Nagato physically emaciated and unable to access his full strength. Obito’s offer of Hashirama Cells and Tobi’s chakra restores him to his prime, giving him the strength to personally confront Otsutsuki Toneri rather than relying solely on the Six Paths of Pain. 111 120

Personality

Nagato is driven by Yahiko’s dream of ending war. He rejects the idea that peace can be created through an eternal dream, but accepts that overwhelming force may be necessary to deter nations from fighting. His intended solution is to leave the Demonic Statue’s power to every nation after his death, forcing them to restrain one another. 128

He is cautious toward Obito and Black Zetsu, increasingly suspecting that “Madara Uchiha” concealed the origins of the Rinnegan and the true purpose of the Demonic Statue. Despite these doubts, he keeps much of his concern hidden from Konan. 120 124
