Background / History

Life in Holy Soul Village

Tang Hao was a once-in-a-century genius of the Clear Sky Sect and the renowned Clear Sky Douluo. Yu Xiaogang remembered him as someone who had opposed Spirit Hall single-handedly. By the beginning of the story, however, he lived as a blacksmith at the eastern end of Holy Soul Village, where the villagers regarded him as a useless drunk. Old Jack occasionally helped support his household 1 6.

Shortly after Ah Yin sacrificed herself and Tang San was born, Tang Hao rescued an abandoned infant from the snow outside the village. He adopted the child as Chen Mo, raising him alongside Tang San. After discovering that Chen Mo’s blood nourished Ah Yin’s surviving seed, he repeatedly cut the infant’s palm. Once Chen Mo was older than two, Tang Hao instead required him to draw a small bowl of his own blood every three days to water her Blue Silver Grass form 1.

Attempts to Restore Ah Yin

When the boys reached six, Tang Hao sent them to awaken their Martial Souls. Chen Mo concealed his Divine Tree of Creation under the name “Green Wood Tree” and understated his innate Soul Power. Tang Hao’s attention centered on whether this plant-type Martial Soul could accelerate Ah Yin’s growth. A demonstration increased her age from slightly over 2,100 years to approximately 2,200 years, renewing his hope of resurrecting her 1 2 3.

Believing stronger Soul Rings would improve that ability, Tang Hao took Chen Mo to the Soul Hunting Forest. He initially refused to let a six-year-old absorb a thousand-year first ring, but relented after Chen Mo demonstrated unusual physical strength. Tang Hao severely wounded a Man-Eating Flower, guarded Chen Mo during absorption, and supervised his subsequent practice 3 4.

Journey to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well

Chen Mo falsely claimed that his Martial Soul could sense life magnetic fields and led Tang Hao to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. Tang Hao protected him from the surrounding poison and flew him into the valley. After witnessing the site’s exceptional growth-accelerating effects, he decided to retrieve Ah Yin 5.

Tang Hao deliberately left Chen Mo behind because the poisonous creatures and cliffs would prevent the boy from escaping. Although he promised to return within three days, he first visited Nuoding Academy and entrusted Tang San to Yu Xiaogang, leaving a Pope Token for protection 5 6.

At the academy, Tang Hao recognized Xiao Wu as a hundred-thousand-year soul beast. He considered killing her for her Soul Ring and Soul Bone, but stopped after observing her closeness to Tang San. Seeing a parallel with his own relationship with Ah Yin, he decided Xiao Wu could become his son’s protector and helper. He spent seven days secretly observing them before returning to the valley 6 7.

Defeat and Imprisonment

During Tang Hao’s absence, Chen Mo recruited Dugu Bo by alleviating his poison. Together, they prepared the valley with Soul-Sealing Powder, Muscle-Weakening Powder, poisoned herbs, and traps intended to obstruct escape. Tang Hao inhaled the concealed poison upon returning with Ah Yin 8 9.

Chen Mo then confronted him over his treatment as a tool. Tang Hao summoned his Clear Sky Hammer and nine Soul Rings, but the poisons disrupted his Soul Power and weakened his body. Dugu Bo’s Serpent Emperor Avatar bit his shoulder and injected venom that destroyed his meridians and Soul Power core. His cultivation fell below rank ten 10 11 12.

Chen Mo absorbed some of the energy escaping Tang Hao’s body, using much of it to strengthen his Martial Soul. He confiscated Ah Yin and Tang Hao’s Storage Soul Tools, while Dugu Bo confined Tang Hao in a secret chamber behind the valley 11.

Later, Chen Mo extracted Tang Hao’s four limb Soul Bones and amputated all four limbs, sustaining his life with Life Blessing. He left the skull and torso bones intact, fearing that killing Tang Hao might alert the Clear Sky Sect. This possible method of detecting his death was Chen Mo’s suspicion, not a confirmed sect ability 22 23 26.

Appearance

  • Age and build: A rugged-looking, middle-aged man 1.
  • Hair and clothing: Disheveled black hair and a gray robe 6.
  • Usual presentation: Slovenly and frequently intoxicated, often holding a wine gourd 1.
  • After capture: Pale-faced and vacant-eyed; later left without any of his four limbs 22 23.

Personality

Tang Hao’s devotion to Ah Yin drives much of his conduct. Her potential resurrection immediately draws him out of his drunken lethargy, but that devotion also leads him to exploit Chen Mo’s blood and abilities. His decision to confine the boy in a dangerous valley shows how readily he prioritizes control over his adopted son’s freedom 1 3 5.

He shows greater concern for Tang San’s future, arranging his schooling, securing Yu Xiaogang’s assistance, and assessing Xiao Wu as a potential protector. Nevertheless, he leaves despite being told how attached Tang San is to him. His confidence in his own strength and his dismissal of six-year-old Chen Mo’s ability to act independently help make the ambush possible 5 6 7 10.
