Background / History

Clan upbringing and awakening

Yu Xiaogang grew up as Yu Yuanzhen’s favored legitimate son and expected successor, receiving abundant cultivation resources and showing an early love of learning. His awakening overturned those expectations: his Martial Soul resembled a purple pig-dog, and his innate Soul Power measured only half a rank. Yu Yuanzhen considered directing him toward the family businesses instead of clan leadership 1.

During the same ceremony, Xiaogang persuaded his father to test his neglected elder brother, Long Qianming, then called Yu Qianming. His apparent fairness concealed the hope that Qianming would perform even worse and absorb the clan’s ridicule. After Qianming’s expulsion, Xiaogang offered him ten percent of his resources, intending to obtain a compliant subject for external Martial Soul research. Qianming refused both the offer and further clan assistance 1 2 3.

Thunder Academy

Despite his poor aptitude, Xiaogang retained his father’s financial support. After reaching rank 10, he obtained his first Soul Ring from a sedated Thunder Dragon Beast kept in the clan’s prison. Instead of producing the draconic transformation his father anticipated, the absorption released poisonous flatulence throughout nearby cages. The incident spread through the clan and intensified the ridicule surrounding him 11 12.

Xiaogang subsequently left for Thunder Academy, declaring that he would prove he was not worthless. He consistently placed first in theoretical examinations, but his Martial Soul and practical combat performances made him a target of mockery. He became increasingly isolated, living alone in a luxurious detached dormitory 13 24.

News that Yu Xiaolie had awakened the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon with rank-seven innate Soul Power devastated him. Believing his younger brother would replace him as heir, Xiaogang resolved to become a Soul Grandmaster and travel the continent to expand his knowledge 25.

Second Soul Ring

At rank 20, Xiaogang rejected Thunder Canyon in favor of Sunset Forest. He wanted a dark-attribute lesser dragon Soul Ring, reasoning partly from the black appearance of Qianming’s similar Martial Soul. Avoiding former clan disciples and their ridicule also influenced his choice 54.

Accompanied by Thunder Academy’s dean, his sixth uncle, he initially sought a Fire Shadow Earth Dragon Bear. After finding it defeated by a mutant purple snake, he chose the snake instead, citing its strength, coloration, and hallucinogenic venom. The absorption caused severe pain to both him and Luo Sanpao. Although he became a Soul Grandmaster, the resulting hypnosis skill disappointed him 54 55.

Plant Academy and tournament failure

Xiaogang traveled south to the Häagen-Dazs Duchy, seeking a teaching position through which he could refine his theories and achieve recognition in the Continental Advanced Elite Soul Master Tournament. Several academies rejected him because he was only a Soul Grandmaster. Plant Academy’s dean, Mu Chun, welcomed him after recognizing him from a Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan banquet 56.

He promised to produce a team capable of reaching the finals within three years. His guidance soon brought him into conflict with Ye Huang, whose Purple Bamboo Leaf Martial Soul he wanted to strengthen through animal-type Soul Rings. Ye Huang insisted on suitable bamboo Soul Beasts and resisted Xiaogang’s attempts to use him to verify Martial Soul Mimicry Theory 57 58 60.

Three years later, Ye Huang fought for Three Rivers Academy and helped defeat Plant Academy. Spectators publicly questioned Xiaogang’s qualifications as team leader. Plant Academy ultimately finished last, and Xiaogang was brought back to his clan under arrest to answer for misleading students. He subsequently left the clan amid renewed mockery 66 67 69 70 109.

Spirit Hall and publication

Xiaogang reached Spirit City hoping to advance his research. Qian Lingyun helped bring him into Spirit Hall and gave him access to its libraries. Her concealed intention was to use his resemblance to Long Qianming to make the grieving Bibi Dong fall for him—not to pursue Xiaogang herself 83 84 110.

His relationship with Bibi Dong instead deteriorated. She refused to adopt his Martial Soul Mimicry Theory and condemned his record at Plant Academy. By then, he had completed the manuscript of Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul. His time in Spirit Hall ended in expulsion 109 110.

Afterward, Flender attempted to extort him over spoiled milk cakes, then changed his approach upon noticing Xiaogang’s rare Storage Soul Tool. The two became friends, and Xiaogang sold his newly published theories through Flender’s shop. The books became popular among common-born Soul Masters who lacked access to academy and clan knowledge, earning him the title “Grandmaster Yu” 111 112.

Liu Erlong and the search for evolution

While accompanying Flender to obtain his fifth Soul Ring, Xiaogang met Liu Erlong, an admirer of his writings. Mutual attraction developed, and Martial Soul resonance suggested the possibility of a fusion skill. After Flender’s absorption, however, Xiaogang felt fear rather than the closeness experienced by his companions 113 114.

His pursuit of Martial Soul evolution also brought him into conflict with the Dugu Family. After repeated refusals to share their evolution secrets, he followed them and investigated their private affairs, provoking Dugu Xin. Liu Erlong later challenged Dugu Xin’s group on Xiaogang’s behalf 124.

Upon learning that Liu Erlong was his cousin, Xiaogang fled their relationship. He then sought Long Qianming’s help in evolving Luo Sanpao into the Golden Sacred Dragon. Qianming was absent, and the Dugu estate’s steward refused him entry. Xiaogang left Heaven Dou City, insisting that he could achieve the evolution himself 140 141.

Tang San’s teacher

After a period of bereavement and heavy drinking, Xiaogang accepted Tang San as his disciple. He recognized Tang San’s Twin Martial Souls and treated his exceptional aptitude as an opportunity to establish the value of his teachings. Following his earlier failures, he no longer emphasized having beast Martial Souls absorb plant-type Soul Rings 203.

He recommended a poison-focused path for Tang San’s Native Dog Martial Soul and accompanied him to obtain his first Soul Ring. During a Mandala Snake attack, Luo Sanpao’s gas proved ineffective, and Xiaogang was poisoned. Tang San later removed most of the poison. Upon regaining consciousness, Xiaogang immediately asked about his disciple’s Soul Power and new skill 203 204 205.

Privately, he also hoped to use Tang San’s future strength and Clear Sky Sect connections to take revenge on Long Qianming and uncover the secret of Luo Heipao’s evolution 204.

Appearance

  • Youthful appearance: Refined and noble-looking at his awakening ceremony 1.
  • Adult appearance: Handsome and distinguished; Bibi Dong notices similarities between his facial features and Long Qianming’s 83 110.
  • Clothing: Richly dressed when he encounters Flender, with a belt-shaped Storage Soul Tool at his waist 111 112.
  • Persistent odor: Luo Sanpao’s flatulence leaves a faint smell on him that daily bathing cannot fully conceal 25.

Personality

Xiaogang combines persistent ambition with a deep inferiority complex. He cultivates diligently despite his weak starting aptitude, pursues research across multiple institutions, and endures an exceptionally painful second Soul Ring absorption. His ambition centers on proving himself through theory and eventually possessing the world’s foremost dragon Martial Soul 11 53 55 56.

He is intensely sensitive to status and humiliation. He takes pride in being a legitimate clan leader’s son, resents more talented relatives, and repeatedly reassures himself by imagining Long Qianming as less successful. Criticism often prompts anger, withdrawal, or renewed claims that his theories cannot be wrong 3 12 25 60.

His desire for validation also shapes his treatment of others. He seeks Qianming as an experimental subject, pressures Ye Huang to follow his research proposals, and interprets disagreement as disrespect. Conversely, praise from Mu Kongkong strongly satisfies his vanity. At Thunder Academy, he avoids publicly calling the dean “Sixth Uncle,” fearing scrutiny of his family connections and reports of years of theory-exam cheating 3 54 57 60.

Abilities & Skills

External Martial Soul — Luo Sanpao

Luo Sanpao exists outside Xiaogang’s body as a purple, pig-and-dog-like creature with a fat head and large ears 1.

  • Independent movement: Can scout ahead and physically engage enemies 204.
  • Shared perception: Xiaogang perceives what Luo Sanpao sees through their connected consciousness 204.
  • Absorption support: Shares part of the strain when Xiaogang absorbs a Soul Ring 12.
  • Limited physical strength: A four-hundred-year-old Mandala Snake quickly overwhelms it, forcing it to dissolve into Soul Power and return to Xiaogang 204.
  • Latent bloodline: Long Qianming identifies a thin Golden Sacred Dragon bloodline that could evolve if properly developed. Xiaogang’s documented individual cultivation does not achieve that evolution 2 140 141.

First Soul Skill — Poisonous Flatulence

His Thunder Dragon Beast Soul Ring strengthens Luo Sanpao’s gas emissions into a poisonous attack 12.

  • During absorption, the gas spreads through nearby prison cages and renders several Soul Beasts unconscious; healing and wind-attribute Soul Masters prevent deaths 12.
  • Xiaogang later invokes the attack with “Fart like thunder, Earth-Shattering Luo Sanpao!” 204.
  • Its effectiveness depends on the target: the Mandala Snake’s poison resistance allows it to continue pursuing him unaffected 204.

Second Soul Skill — Hypnotic Purple Mist

His mutant snake Soul Ring grants a mist that hypnotizes enemies rather than the lethal hallucinogenic venom he sought 55.

  • Ineffective against opponents above Soul Grandmaster 55.
  • Also ineffective against same-realm opponents whose spiritual power exceeds his own 55.

Martial Soul Dietary Therapy

Xiaogang researches food as a means of improving Luo Sanpao’s performance 25.

  • White radishes reduce the Soul Power cost of keeping Luo Sanpao outside his body 25.
  • They promote gas accumulation and strengthen his first Soul Skill 25.
  • He also feeds Luo Sanpao Soul Beast meat, including lesser dragon meat 11.

Martial Soul Theory

Xiaogang’s research covers Martial Souls, Soul Beasts, ring selection, and cultivation methods 58 112 203.

Theory / Work Content and reception
Martial Soul Mimicry Theory Proposes that plant and tool Martial Souls can absorb animal-type Soul Rings, while beast Martial Souls can absorb plant-type rings. His attempts to apply it provoke conflict with Ye Huang; clan elders later regard the published theory as dangerously flawed 58 60 113.
Optimal Soul Ring Age Absorption Theory Guides his intended cultivation plan for Tang San, whose innate full Soul Power and Twin Martial Souls he believes provide greater room for error 203.
Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul A publicly sold compilation that becomes popular among common-born Soul Masters lacking systematic instruction. Influential families regard it far less highly 112 113.
Martial Soul evolution research Seeks a method to transform Luo Sanpao into the Golden Sacred Dragon. He attempts to learn from the Dugu Family and Long Qianming but does not obtain their secrets 109 124 140 141.

Equipment / Items

  • Belt-shaped Storage Soul Tool — Stores his belongings and money. Its rarity persuades Flender that robbing him could provoke a powerful family 111 112.
  • Specially made mask — Worn to cope with Luo Sanpao’s persistent flatulence in his dormitory 24.
  • Dagger — Used to kill the subdued beasts selected for his Soul Rings 11 55.
  • White radishes — Carried as food for Luo Sanpao and used to prepare its gas attack 25 204.

Relationships

  • Yu Yuanzhen — Father and principal patron. Continues funding Xiaogang despite his weak aptitude, but later condemns his conduct at Plant Academy 11 69.
  • Long Qianming / Yu Qianming — Elder half-brother, rival, and object of jealousy. Rejects Xiaogang’s proposed research arrangement; Xiaogang later seeks his evolution secrets while nurturing plans for revenge 1 3 140 204.
  • Yu Xiaolie — Younger brother whose talent and inheritance prospects deepen Xiaogang’s insecurity. Xiaogang had hoped he would also awaken Luo Sanpao 25 53 70.
  • Dean Yu — Sixth uncle and dean of Thunder Academy. Oversees his resources, assists his second Soul Ring hunt, and offers him a teaching-assistant position 54 55.
  • Mu Chun — Plant Academy’s dean and an early professional supporter. Welcomes Xiaogang and mediates his disputes with Ye Huang 56 57 60.
  • Ye Huang — Former student who resists his Soul Ring advice, leaves Plant Academy, and later helps defeat its tournament team 58 60 66 67.
  • Bibi Dong — Rejects his proposed research direction and condemns his teaching failures; Xiaogang interprets her refusal as arrogance 109.
  • Qian Lingyun — Facilitates his Spirit Hall research for her own matchmaking scheme. Xiaogang mistakenly interprets her assistance as romantic interest 110.
  • Flender — Friend, publishing partner, and sworn elder brother. Helps distribute his theories and supports him in disputes 112 113 124.
  • Liu Erlong — Companion and love interest who defends him. Xiaogang flees after discovering that she is his cousin 113 124 140.
  • Tang San — Disciple whose Twin Martial Souls renew Xiaogang’s hopes of proving his theories. Tang San respects his knowledge and saves him from poisoning 203 204 205.
