Background / History
Origins and Imprisonment
Netherworld and Shen Xi are powers separated from Lu Ling’s Spirit Body because their original strength was too great. Netherworld embodies its life, while Shen Xi embodies its soul. Over countless ages of separation, both lost nearly all their power and memories 303.
Shen Xi later explains that the three originally awakened as unconscious forces of slaughter and destruction. Supported by the entire plane, their power was inexhaustible, and they could not truly die; sealing them was the means of restraining their destruction. Netherworld slept in the Dark Baleful Forest, Shen Xi in the Tianshan Rift, and Lu Ling in the Alps. Aurora’s removal and upbringing of Lu Ling ultimately enabled their release 473 479.
Release and Life with Lu Ling
Lu Ling first encounters Netherworld as a chained woman in an ancient castle within his mental world. She introduces herself as his power and explains that piercing his chest supplied the blood needed to reconnect with him. Their contract is already complete by the time he asks whether they can form one, with a red thread linking their hearts 29.
In the physical world, Lu Ling channels blood-red energy into her statue and breaks its stone shell. He catches her weakened body, dresses her in clothes supplied by Asharuiya, and takes her away. He initially describes their relationship to others simply as being bound together in life and death 29.
Netherworld joins his household and accompanies him on hunts and journeys. Her early battles include destroying the Giant Lizard Pseudo-Dragon in Jinlin City and delivering the killing blow against the Silver Ruler at West Ridge 35 50 62.
Sacrifice and Revival
During the Ancient Capital crisis, Netherworld takes the suffering of the Armor Robe’s sinister attack in Lu Ling’s place and destroys the attacking entity. The effort leaves her petrified before the Blood Throne in Sha Yuan. Before losing consciousness, she asks him not to tell Ling Ling and not to forget her 107 110.
Shen Xi initially describes revival as requiring Lu Ling’s life in exchange for Netherworld’s. The eventual method uses his heart’s blood and energy rather than killing him. Before the ritual, Netherworld briefly awakens through the portion of her soul residing in Ye Chang 215 301 302.
The ritual restores Netherworld’s original body approximately one year after her sacrifice. Lu Ling is warned that he will retain less than a tenth of his strength for over half a year. His Life and Death Soul Pacts distribute part of the burden to Long Zhanye and the Mysterious Dragon Emperor; the latter loses twenty percent of her overall strength. Shen Xi confirms that his foundations remain unharmed 302 303.
Return and Romance
After her revival, Netherworld reunites with Ling Ling in Venice and helps teach her to use her inherited powers. She later explicitly confesses her love to Lu Ling, prompting him to recognize feelings he had previously overlooked. Their first kiss causes red petals to appear throughout the Spirit Realm 305 317 323.
Their subsequent dual cultivation permanently strengthens Lu Ling’s body to Monarch Level and begins restoring the power he lost during her revival. Netherworld continues accompanying him afterward, including during his investigation of his birthplace in the Alps 324 412.
Appearance
Netherworld has a pale complexion, long gray-green hair, and gray-red eyes; her usual clothing and manifestations center on red spider lilies, also called Other Shore Flowers 29 49.
- Clothing: Favors red dresses and can alter their length and appearance herself. Her first outfit includes a red-and-white bandeau and flower-woven sleeves 29 88 305.
- Movement: Usually floats, often barefoot, with flowers blooming and fading beneath her steps 43 412.
- Petals: Red petals accompany her appearances, departures, and movements; she can suppress these effects when asked 305 316 432.
- Unsealed appearance: Golden patterns emerge on her clothing and within her eyes when greater power is released 107 303.
- Petrified form: Becomes a gray-white, lifelike statue retaining her final expression 107.
Personality
Netherworld generally speaks in a flat, economical manner and maintains an indifferent expression. This reserve is not an absence of understanding: Lu Ling eventually recognizes that she is mentally mature and understands emotions, despite being naturally airheaded and slow to express her own feelings 317 323.
She seeks physical closeness with Lu Ling, often floating into his arms or resting against his back. When neglected, she expresses her displeasure through blunt complaints and persistent demands for attention. Her loyalty is equally direct: she promises never to betray him and later bears a devastating attack for him 29 107 316 378.
Food is one of her strongest enthusiasms. Promises of a feast can immediately dispel her irritation, and she abandons her usual elegance when eating meat. Her dislike of the Contract Space contrasts sharply with this pleasure in ordinary life; Lu Ling connects that aversion to her prolonged imprisonment 34 63 318.
She also enjoys teasing others and making theatrical entrances. Her treatment of Ling Ling ranges from mischievous handling to genuine reassurance, while Lu Ling repeatedly notices her preference for spectacular displays before an audience 70 305 425 432.
Abilities & Skills
Life of the Spirit Body
Netherworld embodies the physical and life-energy aspect of Lu Ling’s Spirit Body rather than merely possessing an ordinary magic element 303.
- Blood-mediated connection: Uses Lu Ling’s blood to establish contact and their life-linked contract 29.
- Restoration: Converts his blood into pure life energy to restore her petrified body 303.
- Physical enhancement: Their dual cultivation permanently raises Lu Ling’s physique to Monarch Level, with further growth possible 324.
- Energy assimilation: Digests food completely into energy without leaving waste 305.
Other Shore Flowers
Her signature spider lilies can drain life, carry portions of her soul, and interact with other forms of energy 50 96 301 432.
- Life drain: A spreading field of flowers drains the Pseudo-Fear Demon’s vitality and kills it within seconds 50.
- Soul placement: Leaves three tenths of her soul within Ye Chang through her earlier intervention; this fragment later provides a means of awakening 96 301.
- Cultivation enhancement: Her flower raises Ye Chang’s Shadow Element to the third tier of the Super Level 96.
- Dark-energy nourishment: Combines gathered dark elements with a spider lily to produce food for Night Rakshasa, stating that it will enable a Monarch Level breakthrough 432.
- Life preservation: Ling Ling retains a red spider lily associated with Netherworld; Shen Xi returns it alongside a white rose and describes the flowers as preserving life 205.
Scarlet Energy and Blood Weapons
Netherworld shapes scarlet energy into direct attacks and remotely controlled weapons 50 62.
- Dissolving beam: Fires a fingertip beam into the Giant Lizard Pseudo-Dragon’s heart. Spiderweb-like markings spread over its body before it dissolves into red wisps 50.
- Blood blades and swords: Attacks the Silver Ruler with a rain of blades and seals its escape routes with blood swords 62.
- Blood crescent: Sends the finishing attack through Lu Ling’s Chaos Vortex to kill the Great Monarch-level Silver Ruler 62.
- Limits: Cannot access her stronger attacks during that battle and needs Lu Ling to breach the Silver Ruler’s Blade Domain. The finishing strike leaves her genuinely exhausted 62 63.
Protective Awakening
She can release power beyond her ordinarily available attacks, but doing so carries a severe cost 107.
- Bears the suffering caused by the Armor Robe’s attack on Lu Ling 107.
- Destroys the sinister entity within the Armor Robe 107.
- Loses her active body afterward and remains petrified until her restoration 107 303.
Movement and Communication
- Levitation: Floats freely and walks through the air on energy-formed flowers 43.
- Contract Space access: Enters and leaves Lu Ling’s Contract Space despite their bond not having been formed through his Summoning System 34.
- Petal manifestation: Appears from a single petal or disperses into many petals 316 432.
- Spatial passage: Opens a rift to transport Lu Ling’s group into the Spirit Realm 425.
- Telepathy: Speaks directly into Lu Ling’s mental world, including while outwardly occupied with other activities 47 473.
Perception and Knowledge
- Identifies Lu Ling as a Spirit Body—a furnace for the world’s powers—at their first meeting 29.
- Explains that his mental strength prevents Pang Lai from seeing through his cultivation 47.
- Recognizes the Blood Seed as a crude imitation bearing a resemblance to Lu Ling 53.
- Detects the familiar aura of Aurora’s power beneath the Alpine ice, recalling a flower Lu Ling once conjured while grieving his vanished home 67 412.
Path of Rebirth
- Uses Path of Rebirth to display a recording of Ling Ling acting affectionately toward Lu Ling, then dismisses it when he warns her not to reveal more 382.
Teaching and Shared Powers
- Teaches Ling Ling to control her red-spider-lily power alongside Shen Xi’s white-rose power 305 317.
- Ling Ling demonstrably uses Netherworld’s blood blades 262.
- Lu Ling identifies Ling Ling’s Red Lotus Purgatory as presumably one of Netherworld’s skills; its unenhanced destructive power is comparable to Super Level magic 427.
Relationships
- Lu Ling — Her Spirit Body counterpart, soul-contract partner, and lover. Their bond begins with shared life and death; their romantic relationship becomes explicit after her return 29 303 323.
- Shen Xi — Her counterpart as the Soul of the Spirit Body. Netherworld calls her “Little Xi,” can persuade her to cooperate, and introduces her to human food 303 304 305.
- Ling Ling — A close companion, frequent target of teasing, and later pupil. Ling Ling preserves Netherworld’s flower during her dormancy and tearfully embraces her upon her return 205 305 317.
- Ye Chang / Salang — Recipient of an Other Shore Flower containing three tenths of Netherworld’s soul. The fragment subtly influences Ye Chang and allows Netherworld to awaken through her 96 301.
- Long Zhanye — Fellow companion and enthusiastic dining partner. She helps guard the revival ritual and shares its cost through her pact with Lu Ling 302 303 304.
- Night Rakshasa — The normally touch-averse feline immediately welcomes Netherworld’s affection. Netherworld later prepares a dark-energy flower to support her growth 46 431 432.
- Aurora — Lu Ling’s master, whose removal of him from his seal enabled Netherworld and Shen Xi’s eventual rebirth. Aurora recognizes Netherworld and calls her a good child 473 479.
