Background / History
Nuoding Academy
Tang San spent six years at Nuoding City Junior Soul Master Academy, sharing the work-study dormitory with Xiao Wu and Lin Kong. His full innate Soul Power earned him opportunities unavailable to less talented students, including the headmaster’s personal assistance in obtaining his second hundred-year soul ring 1 3 18.
He disliked Lin Kong because Lin Kong could easily make Xiao Wu laugh. This jealousy accompanied open contempt for Lin Kong’s level-one innate Soul Power. By graduation, Tang San and Xiao Wu were level twenty-nine, while Lin Kong had only reached level ten 1 18.
Tang San left Nuoding with Xiao Wu to attend Shrek Academy. Their journey included a return to Holy Soul Village, while Tang Hao secretly followed to protect his son 1 7.
Reunion and Defeat at Shrek
Tang San expected graduation to separate his future permanently from Lin Kong’s. He was therefore shocked when Lin Kong appeared at Shrek with rank twenty-one Soul Power. When he began questioning the sudden increase, Flender interrupted and appointed him as Lin Kong’s opponent for an entrance-assessment duel 18.
Despite an eight-level advantage and an apparently superior soul-ring configuration, Tang San lost the initial martial-soul clash. Lin Kong’s acquired Blue Silver Emperor bloodline suppressed Tang San’s still-unawakened bloodline, while Dark Blue Silver Grass devoured his grass and drained his Soul Power. Both Blue Silver Entanglement and Parasite proved ineffective 19 20.
Flender stopped Tang San from introducing hidden weapons into the spar. Tang San instead activated his Tang Sect techniques and attempted a close-range assault, but Lin Kong countered with Growth and Netherworld Shriek. The match ended with Tang San kneeling in pain. When Xiao Wu praised Lin Kong while helping him, he threw off her hand and returned to the dormitories 20 21.
Great Soul Arena Dispute
After Lin Kong achieved forty consecutive victories, Tang San publicly questioned how he had avoided defeat against fire-attribute opponents. His apparent request for advice was intended to expose Lin Kong’s weakness and undermine his reputation. Flender recognized the hostility behind the questions 29.
Flender reprimanded Tang San and ordered him to lend Lin Kong a usable hidden weapon for his match against Shi Liyuan. Under pressure from both the dean and the other students, Tang San reluctantly handed over his Zhuge Repeating Crossbow. Lin Kong used it immediately; Majila had to intervene to prevent its bolts from killing Shi Liyuan 30.
Star Dou Great Forest Expedition
During the confrontation with Ye Zhiqiu, Tang San proposed using mobility and Ma Hongjun’s flames to exhaust the defensive Soul King. Lin Kong challenged the plan because it left Ning Rongrong vulnerable. The group instead accepted a strategy in which Tang San supplied Blue Silver Grass for Lin Kong to devour as a source of Soul Power 38.
Tang San sustained that supply until his own Soul Power was exhausted. Unbeknownst to him, the absorption also raised Lin Kong’s cultivation by an entire level 41.
He later volunteered to fight in Xiao Wu’s place when Chao Tianxiang proposed a duel over the Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent. After Oscar obtained his third ring, Tang San announced that he too had reached rank thirty, prompting the group to remain in the forest 43 48.
When the Titan Giant Ape carried Xiao Wu away, Tang San obtained a Mushroom Sausage from Oscar and flew after it alone. Lin Kong followed, secretly intending to secure the Eight Spider Lances from the encounter he expected Tang San to have. Tang San was bewildered that someone he regarded with such hostility would follow him into danger 50.
Appearance
- Ordinary appearance: Described as an otherwise ordinary boy, with dark eyes and loose hair falling over his forehead 18 19 21.
- Martial-soul manifestation: Surrounded by flourishing Blue Silver Grass and two yellow soul rings; releasing his martial soul gives him a steadier, more mature bearing 19.
- Technique effects: Purple Demon Eye gives his eyes a dim purple glow, while Mysterious Jade Hand turns his hands lustrous white 21.
Personality
Tang San is proud of his talent and strongly conscious of status. He considers his superiority over the poorly gifted Lin Kong natural, and struggles to accept their reversal at Shrek. During their duel, his pride prevents him from retreating even when withdrawal could relieve the pressure. Later, he regrets making his hostility obvious rather than regretting the hostility itself 18 20 30.
He can conceal resentment behind a calm expression or apparently sincere questions. His attempt to discredit Lin Kong’s winning streak illustrates this calculated side, though his jealousy becomes increasingly visible to Flender and the other students 18 29 30.
His attachment to Xiao Wu is intense and protective. He refuses to let her fight while she is in poor condition and pursues the Titan Giant Ape despite the danger. Her apparent abduction breaks his usual self-control, leaving him distraught and willing to separate from the team 43 50.
Abilities & Skills
Blue Silver Grass
Tang San uses Blue Silver Grass as a control-type martial soul, spreading its blades and roots across the battlefield to contest space and restrain opponents 19.
- Field control: Rapidly grows grass through the soil and directs it toward an opponent 19.
- Reinforcement: Channels additional Soul Power into the grass to improve its toughness and resist pressure 19.
- Bloodline: Possesses an unawakened Blue Silver Emperor bloodline, which is suppressed by Lin Kong’s acquired emperor bloodline 19.
- Weaknesses: Vulnerable to fire; destruction of his grass consumes Soul Power that he cannot recover through his own martial soul 29 38.
First Soul Skill: Blue Silver Entanglement
Transforms Blue Silver Grass into tough vines that shoot toward a target and bind them in layers 20.
- Launches restraints across several meters without first growing grass beside the target 20.
- Is recognized by Lin Kong as troublesome at lower levels 20.
- Fails against Lin Kong’s woven grass barrier, which traps the vines and devours the Soul Power fed into them 20.
Second Soul Skill: Parasite
Scatters tiny, difficult-to-see seeds that settle on an opponent. Once activated, they draw on the target’s Soul Power to grow into restraints 20.
- Designed for stealthy, unexpected immobilization 20.
- Its seeds are devoured before taking root during Tang San’s duel with Lin Kong 20.
Tang Sect Secret Arts
Tang San retains combat options independent of his martial soul, combining perception, strengthened hands, pulling force, and evasive movement 20 21.
- Purple Demon Eye: Detects minute movements, including slight changes in an opponent’s hair and footwork 21.
- Mysterious Jade Hand: Hardens his hands to an ironlike state capable of shattering stone 21.
- Controlling Crane Capturing Dragon: Gathers an invisible pulling force around his body 21.
- Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track: Provides elusive footwork and explosive short-distance movement; his acceleration impresses even Zhu Zhuqing 21.
- Hidden weapons: Offers a potential surprise attack when martial-soul techniques fail, but their use is prohibited in his assessment spar with Lin Kong 20.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Storage Soul Tool — Worn at his waist and used to store hidden weapons 20 30.
- Zhuge Repeating Crossbow — Lent unwillingly to Lin Kong under Flender’s orders. Fires dozens of bolts in a rapid volley and threatens Shi Liyuan with lethal injury before Majila intervenes 30.
- Other hidden weapons — Tang San states that some require specialized methods or techniques, making them unsuitable for untrained users 30.
Relationships
- Xiao Wu — Longtime classmate and his strongest emotional attachment. He is jealous of the attention she gives Lin Kong, but also risks his life to pursue her after the Titan Giant Ape takes her away 1 18 43 50.
- Lin Kong — Former dormmate, fellow Shrek student, and increasingly bitter rival. Tang San resents his rise, while Lin Kong retaliates against years of contempt and exploits their martial-soul compatibility 18 21 30 38 41.
- Tang Hao — Father, identified as Clear Sky Douluo. Secretly protects Tang San during his departure for Shrek 1 17 29.
- Ah Yin — Mother. Lin Kong obtains the Blue Silver Emperor right leg soul bone she left behind and acquires her bloodline, creating a hidden connection to Tang San’s defeat 11 14 19.
- Yu Xiaogang / Grandmaster — Personal teacher; provides knowledge that includes the existence of soul bones 29 47.
- Flender — Shrek’s dean. Arranges the duel with Lin Kong, forbids hidden weapons during the spar, and later reprimands Tang San for undermining a classmate 18 20 29 30.
- Dai Mubai — Dormmate and early supporter during the duel. Despite cheering for him, Dai Mubai also objects to using hidden weapons in an academy spar 19 20 35.
- Oscar — Teammate whose Mushroom Sausage enables Tang San’s solo pursuit of Xiao Wu 50.
