Background / History
Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent Dispute
Meng Yiran encounters the Shrek group in the Star Dou Great Forest while hunting with her grandmother, Chao Tianxiang. She claims the Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent because she wounded it first, but its Soul Ring also suits Oscar. Chao Tianxiang proposes settling ownership through a duel. After Oscar is ruled out as a food-type Soul Master and Xiao Wu is selected, Lin Kong volunteers to fight in her place 43.
Meng Yiran initially refuses because she considers fighting a substantially lower-ranked opponent beneath her dignity. Ordered to participate by her grandmother, she battles Lin Kong to a prolonged stalemate. He ultimately catches her Serpent Cane, distracts her with a wink, and uses Dark Blue Silver Grass to bind and disarm her. Chao Tianxiang declares her defeated. Meng Yiran protests that he cheated, and his insistence that the wink was merely a tactic further humiliates her. Oscar subsequently absorbs the serpent’s Soul Ring 44 45 46 47.
Man Faced Demon Spider and Rematch
Meng Yiran later arrives with both grandparents after Tang San kills a Man Faced Demon Spider they had been hunting. Furious at losing a second prospective Soul Ring, she blames Lin Kong after he steps forward to share responsibility. Meng Shu initially demands that the two boys join his clan as compensation, but retreats from the dispute after learning about the Shrek group’s powerful connections 52 53.
Unwilling to leave without satisfaction, Meng Yiran challenges Lin Kong to another duel, this time without Martial Souls. Their spar develops into improvised grappling, aerial reversals, and increasingly dangerous exchanges. After dodging her uncontrolled flying kick, Lin Kong uses Dark Blue Silver Grass to cushion her landing and concedes because he has broken their agreed restriction 53 54 55.
Meng Yiran stops a retaliatory punch just short of his face. When Oscar complains that she is behaving badly despite losing, she returns and frankly acknowledges her defeat. She then unexpectedly kisses Lin Kong on the cheek and runs into the forest, promising to settle matters with him later. Her grandparents follow her, ending the confrontation and allowing Tang San to proceed with absorbing the spider’s Soul Ring 55 56.
Appearance
- Eyes: Almond-shaped, repeatedly described as beautiful 43 46.
- Face: A pretty face with cherry lips; she visibly blushes during Lin Kong’s teasing and their close-quarters spar 45 46 55.
- Relative age: Dai Mubai describes her as two or three years older than Ning Rongrong and the other girls, with a more developed figure 47.
Personality
Meng Yiran is proud of her strength and initially regards a duel against the lower-ranked Lin Kong as bullying the weak. She trusts her superior Soul Power to overcome his tactics, but remains stubbornly competitive when the fight turns against her. Losing two intended Soul Beasts leaves her openly aggrieved, and she appeals to her grandparents rather than quietly accepting the losses 43 44 53.
Provocation and embarrassment can undermine her judgment. Ma Hongjun and Dai Mubai’s mockery disrupts her concentration, while the intimate positioning of her second duel drives her into increasingly reckless attacks. Nevertheless, she ultimately restrains her final punch and admits that she lost, despite Lin Kong’s willingness to concede 45 54 55.
Abilities & Skills
Serpent Cane Martial Soul
A rare tool Martial Soul used within the Agility Attack System 44.
- Takes the form of a two-meter cane topped with a serpent’s head, suitable for thrusts, sweeping strikes, and thrown attacks 44 45.
- Can be recalled after being thrown by rapidly withdrawing and resummoning the Martial Soul 45.
- Accounts for roughly seventy to eighty percent of her combat strength; being disarmed leaves her severely weakened 46.
- Her intended Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent ring would increase the cane’s attack speed, rather than directly increasing her own movement speed. She does not obtain that ring 44 47.
First Soul Skill: Snake Blade
Deploys a poisoned blade from the serpent’s head of her cane 44.
- Extends approximately two feet, abruptly increasing her striking reach 44.
- Easily cuts through Lin Kong’s Dark Blue Silver Grass; its venom blackens and withers severed vines 44 45.
- Makes Lin Kong reluctant to reclaim poisoned grass because he fears the toxin could enter his body during Soul Power recovery 44 45.
- Allows her to maintain a precise defense against vines attacking from multiple directions 45.
Second Soul Skill: Serpent Body
Greatly enhances bodily flexibility and agility 54.
- Enables a snake-like twist that reverses her falling position during the barehanded duel 54.
- She applies the flexibility associated with this skill to unarmed combat, surprising Lin Kong 54.
Barehanded Combat
Combines quick reactions, strength, and instinctive counters 46 54 55.
- Recognizes the danger of wrist locks and repeatedly counters by seizing Lin Kong’s wrists and arms 54.
- Has no formal grappling knowledge; her exchanges with Lin Kong rely on instinct rather than a trained locking system 54.
- Escapes a ground pin through an explosive movement of her waist and abdomen followed by a double kick 55.
- Her personal running speed can be hindered independently of her weapon: Lin Kong’s low-growing grass disrupts her footing and reduces her pursuit speed 44.
Relationships
- Meng Shu — Grandfather. The Dragon Duke protects her interests and seeks compensation for the lost Man Faced Demon Spider. Her distress helps prompt the second confrontation with Lin Kong 52 53.
- Chao Tianxiang — Grandmother. The Snake Granny arranges her first duel, enforces its result, and comforts her afterward while explaining that losing control of the cane had already decided the match 43 44 46.
- Lin Kong — Rival and recipient of her affection. Their two duels mix resentment, teasing, and embarrassment. She ultimately acknowledges defeat and kisses his cheek; no established romantic relationship is documented 46 53 54 55.
- Tang San — Soul Ring rival. His killing of the Man Faced Demon Spider costs her a second intended ring. She rejects his offer to duel, insisting on facing Lin Kong instead 52 53.
